As a result of the variscan collision, several allochtonous complexes were emplaced on the Iberian margin in Devonian times, among them the Cabo Ortegal Complex comprising the Moeche ophiolitic sequence. Copper has been won from several mines (Piquitos I & II, Barqueira, Maruxa) from disseminated ores and thin massive sulphide layers in the Moeche Unit, a strongly deformed meta-volcanic sequence comprising mainly quartz-chlorite schists and mylonites, which defines the top of the ophiolite. The ores were metamorphosed and strongly deformed under brittle conditions (for pyrite), but their textures are often apparently post-deformational, due to very common solution-transfer processes; they are composed mostly of pyrite and chalcopyrite, with minor sphalerite, pyrrhotite, etc., and with traces of native gold and PGE. The geology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of the orebodies relate closely to VMS of the Cu-Zn (Cyprus) type. Fluid inclusion studies allowed an estimation of metamorphic conditions at pressures of 2/2’5 kb and T 325/350ºC. New determinations using the chlorite geothermometer yield temperatures around 320 ºC, corresponding to pressures near 2 kb according to the isochores deduced from the fluid inclusion study, although in the Barqueira mine higher temperatures, up to 350 ºC, are found, corresponding to presssures up to 2’5 kb. Pb isotopic compositions of pyrite point to a double source of Pb, i.e. a main mantle and a subordinate crustal source. The values for 87SR/86Sr in pyrite support this interpretation, but some results suggest later mobilization in an open system, corresponding to solution-transfer. Age determinations of pyrite deduced from the Pb isotope uranogenic graph, ≈ 480 Ma, do not fit with the metamorphic ages published for the Moeche Unit, and might point to the age of Pb extraction from the mantle.

In this research the mechanical behaviour of pure tungsten (W) and its alloys (2 wt.% Ti–0.47 wt.% Y2O3 and 4 wt.% Ti–0.5 wt.% Y2O3) is compared. These tungsten alloys, have been obtained by powder metallurgy. The yield strength, fracture toughness and elastic modulus have been studied in the temperature interval of 25 °C to 1000 °C. The results have shown that the addition of Ti substantially improves the bending strength and toughness of W, but it also dramatically increases the DBTT. On the other hand, the addition of 0.5% Y2O3, is enough to improve noticeably the oxidation behaviour at the higher temperatures. The grain size, fractography and microstructure are studied in these materials. Titanium is a good grain growth inhibitor and effective precursor of liquid phase in HIP. The simultaneous presence of Y2O3 and Ti permits to obtain materials with low pores presence

SUMMARY Pre-slaughter handling in fish is important because it affects both physiological reactions and post mortem biochemical processes, and thus welfare and product quality. Pre-slaughter fasting is regularly carried out in aquaculture, as it empties the viscera of food and faeces, thus reducing the intestinal bacteria load and the spread of gut enzymes and potential pathogens to the flesh. However, it is unclear how long rainbow trout can be fasted before suffering unnecessary stress. In addition, very little is known about the best time of the day to slaughter fish, which may in turn be dictated by diurnal rhythms in physiological stress parameters. Water temperature is also known to play a very important role in stress physiology in fish but the combined effect with fasting is unclear. Current recommendations regarding the optimal duration of pre-slaughter fasting do not normally consider water temperature and are only based on days, not degree days (ºC d). The effects of short-term fasting prior to slaughter (1, 2 and 3 days, between 11.1 and 68.0 ºC days) and hour of slaughter (08h00, 14h00 and 20h00) were determined in commercial-sized rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) over four trials at different water temperatures (TRIAL 1, 11.8 ºC; TRIAL 2, 19.2 ºC; TRIAL 3, 11.1 ºC; and TRIAL 4, 22.7 ºC). We measured biometric, haematological, metabolic and product quality indicators. In each trial, the values of fasted fish (n=90) were compared with 90 control fish kept under similar conditions but not fasted. Results show that fasting affected biometric indicators. The coefficient of condition in fasted trout was lower than controls 2 days after food deprivation. Gut emptying occurred within the first 24 h after the cessation of feeding, with small traces of digesta after 48 h. Gut emptying was faster at higher water temperatures. Liver weight decreased in food deprived fish and differences between fasted and fed trout were more evident when gut clearance was faster. The overall effect of fasting for up to three days on haematological indicators was small. Plasma cortisol levels were high in both fasted and fed fish in all trials. Plasma glucose response to fasting varied among trials, but it tended to be lower in fasted fish as the days of fasting increased. In any case, it seems that water temperature played a more important role, with higher concentrations at lower temperatures on days 2 and 3 after the cessation of feeding. Plasma lactate levels indicate moments of high muscular activity and were also high, but no variation related to fasting could be found. Haematocrit did not show any significant effect of fasting, but leucocytes tended to be higher when trout were less stressed and when their body condition was higher. Finally, the loss of liver weight was not accompanied by a decrease in liver glycogen (only measured in TRIAL 3), suggesting that a different strategy to maintain plasma glucose levels was used. Regarding the hour of slaughter, lower cortisol levels were found at 20h00, suggesting that trout were less stressed later in the day and that pre-slaughter handling may be less stressful at night. Haematocrit levels were also lower at 20h00 but only at lower temperatures, indicating that higher temperatures increase metabolism. Neither fasting nor the hour of slaughter had a significant effect on the evolution of meat quality during 3 days of storage. In contrast, storage time seemed to have a more important effect on meat quality parameters. The lowest pH was reached 24-48 h post mortem, with a higher variability among fasting durations at 20h00, although no clear pattern could be discerned. Maximum stiffening from rigor mortis occurred after 24 h. The water holding capacity was very stable throughout storage and seemed to be independent of pH changes. Meat lightness (L*) slightly increased during storage and a* and b*-values were relatively stable. In conclusion, based on the haematological results, slaughtering at night may have less of a negative effect on welfare than at other times of the day. Overall, our results suggest that rainbow trout can cope well with fasting up to three days or 68 ºC d prior to slaughter and that their welfare is therefore not seriously compromised. At low water temperatures, trout could probably be fasted for longer periods without negative effects on welfare but more research is needed to determine the relationship between water temperature and days of fasting in terms of loss of live weight and the decrease in plasma glucose and other metabolic indicators.

Gasification is a technology that can replace traditional management alternatives used up to date to deal with this waste (landfilling, composting and incineration) and which fulfils the social, environmental and legislative requirements. The main products of sewage sludge gasification are permanent gases (useful to generate energy or to be used as raw material in chemical synthesis processes), liquids (tars) and char. One of the main problems to be solved in gasification is tar production. Tars are organic impurities which can condense at relatively high temperatures making impossible to use the produced gases for most applications. This work deals with the effect of some primary tar removal processes (performed inside the gasifier) on sewage sludge gasification products. For this purpose, analysis of the gas composition, tar production, cold gas efficiency and carbon conversion were carried out. The tests were performed with air in a laboratory scale plant consisting mainly of a bubbling bed gasifier. No catalyzed and catalyzed (10% wt of dolomite in the bed and in the feeding) tests were carried out at different temperatures (750ºC, 800ºC and 850ºC) in order to know the effect of these parameters in the gasification products. As far as tars were concerned, qualitative and quantitative tar composition was determined. In all tests the Equivalence Ratio (ER) was kept at 0.3. Temperature is one of the most influential variables in sewage sludge gasification. Higher temperatures favoured hydrogen and CO production while CO2 content decreased, which might be partially explained by the effect of the cracking, Boudouard and CO2 reforming reactions. At 850ºC, cold gas efficiency and carbon conversion reached 49% and 76%, respectively. The presence of dolomite as catalyst increased the production of H2 reaching contents of 15.5% by volume at 850 °C. Similar behaviour was found for CO whereas CO2 and CnHm (light hydrocarbons) production decreased. In the presence of dolomite, a tar reduction of up to 51% was reached in comparison with no catalyzed tests, as well as improvements on cold gas efficiency and carbon conversion. Several assays were developed in order to test catalyst performance under more rough gasification conditions. For this purpose, the throughput value (TR), defined as kg sludge “as received” fed to the gasifier per hour and per m2 of cross sectional area of the gasifier, was modified. Specifically, the TR values used were 110 (reference value), 215 and 322 kg/h·m2. When TR increased, the H2, CO and CH4 production decreased while the CO2 and the CnHm production increased. Tar production increased drastically with TR during no catalysed tests what is related to the lower residence time of the gas inside the reactor. Nevertheless, even at TR=322 kg/h·m2, tar production decreased by nearly 50% with in-bed use of dolomite in comparison with no catalyzed assays under the same operating conditions. Regarding relative tar composition, there was an increase in benzene and naphthalene content when temperature increased while the content of the rest of compounds decreased. The dolomite seemed to be effective all over the range of molecular weight studied showing tar removal efficiencies between 35-55% in most cases. High values of the TR caused a significant increase in tar production but a slight effect on tar composition.

The mechanical behavior of three tungsten (W) alloys with vanadium (V) and lanthana (La2O3) additions (W–4%V, W–1%La2O3, W–4%V–1%La2O3) processed by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) have been compared with pure-W to analyze the influence of the dopants. Mechanical characterization was performed by three point bending (TPB) tests in an oxidizing air atmosphere and temperature range between 77 (immersion tests in liquid nitrogen) and 1273 K, through which the fracture toughness, flexural strength, and yield strength as function of temperature were obtained. Results show that the V and La2O3 additions improve the mechanical properties and oxidation behavior, respectively. Furthermore, a synergistic effect of both dopants results in an extraordinary increase of the flexure strength, fracture toughness and resistance to oxidation compared to pure-W, especially at higher temperatures. In addition, a new experimental method was developed to obtain a very small notch tip radius (around 5–7 μm) and much more similar to a crack through the use of a new machined notch. The fracture toughness results were lower than those obtained with traditional machining of the notch, which can be explained with electron microscopy, observations of deformation in the rear part of the notch tip. Finally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination of the microstructure and fracture surfaces was used to determine and analyze the relationship between the macroscopic mechanical properties and the micromechanisms of failure involved, depending on the temperature and the dispersion of the alloy.

In coffee processing the fermentation stage is considered one of the critical operations by its impact on the final quality of the product. However, the level of control of the fermentation process on each farm is often not adequate; the use of sensorics for controlling coffee fermentation is not common. The objective of this work is to characterize the fermentation temperature in a fermentation tank by applying spatial interpolation and a new methodology of data analysis based on phase space diagrams of temperature data, collected by means of multi-distributed, low cost and autonomous wireless sensors. A real coffee fermentation was supervised in the Cauca region (Colombia) with a network of 24 semi-passive TurboTag RFID temperature loggers with vacuum plastic cover, submerged directly in the fermenting mass. Temporal evolution and spatial distribution of temperature is described in terms of the phase diagram areas which characterizes the cyclic behaviour of temperature and highlights the significant heterogeneity of thermal conditions at different locations in the tank where the average temperature of the fermentation was 21.2 °C, although there were temperature ranges of 4.6°C, and average spatial standard deviation of ±1.21ºC. In the upper part of the tank we found high heterogeneity of temperatures, the higher temperatures and therefore the higher fermentation rates. While at the bottom, it has been computed an area in the phase diagram practically half of the area occupied by the sensors of the upper tank, therefore this location showed higher temperature homogeneity

ABSTRACT This PhD theis presents a study using di_erent growth techniques (RPEMOCVD and spray pyrolysis) and structures (nanowires, quantum dots and wells and layers) in order to develop devices that extend from the visible to the ultraviolet range. For this reason ZnO based materials have been choosen, because they o_er the possibility to tunne the bandgap in this energy range. Proof of this is that this study has managed to cover a spectral range from 1.86 to 4.11 eV, also being studied physical phenomena such as di_usion and incorporation of alloy or adsorption of gases on the surface, allowing the develop di_erent highly sensitive photodetectors. Therefore, the results obtained in this thesis are a great contribution two large blockso the knowledge of the physical properties of alloys Zn(Cd)O and Zn(Mg)O for potential applications in devices that operate in the visible and ultraviolet range, respectively. In the _rst chapter, the general properties of ZnO-based materials are presented, showing the facilities that these kind of materials o_er to obtain di_erent nanoestructures. In Chapter 3, optical theoretical concepts are given to understand the optical properties of these materials, also showing the most signi_cant results of ZnO. In the chapters related with the results, two blocks could be distinguish. In the _rst one, Zn(Cd)O nanowires and quantum wells grown by RPE-MOCVD have been analyzed (Chapters 4 and 5). The second block of results shows the study performed in Zn(Mg)O _lms and quantum dots grown by spray pyrolysis. Zn(Cd)O nanowires and quantum wells grown by RPE-MOCVD In summary, the results of the PhD thesis are a great contribution to the knowledge of the physical properties of Zn(Cd)O and Zn(Mg)O alloys and their application for high performance devices operating in the visible and UV ranges, respectively. The performance of the device is still limited due to alloy solubility and p-doping stability, which opens a door for future research in this _eld. Theoretically, annealing ZnO with CdO allows to reduce the bandgap from 3.37 to 0.95 eV, covering the whole visible spectrum. The development of ZnCdO alloys allows the fabrication of heterostructures and quantum wells, necessary for the development of high performance optoelectronic devices. However, the di_erent crystal structures between CdO and ZnO and the low solubility of Cd and its high vapor pressure, hinders the growth of ZnCdO alloys with high Cd contents. In this PhD thesis Zn(Cd)O nanowires have been optically and structurally characterized, obtaining a maximum Cd content of 54% while maintaining their wurtzite structure. This Cd content, which allows lowering the bandgap down to 1.86 eV, is the highest concentration ever reported in nanostructures based on ZnO. The combination of optical and structural characterization techniques used during this thesis has allowed the demonstration of the presence of a single wurtzite structure, without observing any indication of phase separation or Cd accumulation along the nanowire. Annealing processes are essential in the fabrication of optoelectronic devices. For this reason, a complete study of the annealing e_ects in the optical and electrical properties of Zn(Cd)O nanowires has been performed. In the _rst place, annealing nanowires at higher temperatures than their growth temperature (300 oC) allows a signi_cant improvement of their emission properties. However, in the samples that contain Cd a shift in the emission towards higher energies has been observed due to a homogeneous reduction of the Cd content in the nanowires. Time resolved photoluminescence measurements show the impact of the exciton localization in the potential _uctuations due to a statistical alloy disorder. An increase in the carrier lifetime has been obtained for the annealed nanowires. This increase is mainly due to the reduction of non-radiative recombination centers associated with the defects present in the material. Furthermore, temperature dependent time resolved photoluminescence measurements suggest a reduction of the alloy disorder in the annealed samples. In this thesis, single nanowire photodetectors with a high responsivity in the UV range have been demonstrated. Due to the high surface/volume ratio, these structures are very sensitive to gas adsorption at the surface, which largely de_nes the optical and electrical properties of the material and, therefore, of the device. With the aim of obtaining time stable devices, the dynamic adsorption-desorption processes have been studied, developing di_erent approaches that allow a higher control over them. Finally, ZnCdO/ZnO quantum wells have been grown with a nominal Cd concentration of 54% inside the well. The performed optical measurements show that increasing the well width from 0.7 to 10 nm, shifts the emission related with the well from 3.30 to 1.97 eV. This result represents the highest shift reported in the literature. However, a detailed structural characterization shows the presence of di_usion phenomena which substantially reduce the concentration of Cd in the well, while increasing it in the barrier. This type of phenomena should be considered when ac curately interpretating the quantum con_nement e_ects in Zn(Cd)O/ZnO quantum wells. Theoretically, annealing ZnO with CdO allows to decrease the bandgap from 3.37 to 0.95 eV, covering the whole visible spectrum. Zn(Mg)O _lms and quantum dots grown by spray pyrolysis Due to its simplicity, low-cost and capacity to grow over large areas conserving a high crystal quality, spray pyrolysis technique presents a great interest in the scienti_c community for developing comercial devices. In this thesis, a complete study of the optical and structural properties of Zn(Mg)O _lms and quantum dots grown by spray pyrolysis has been performed. Contrary to Zn(Cd)O alloys, when introducing Mg in the ZnO wurtzite structure an increase in the bandgap in obtained. Once again, the di_erence in the crystal structure of ZnO and MgO limits the amount of Mg that can be introduced before phase separation appears. In this PhD thesis, a maximum Mg content of 35% has been incorporated in the wurtzite structure using spray pyrolysis. This variation in the Mg content translates into an increase of the absorption edge from 3.30 to 4.11 eV. Up to this date, this result represents the highest Mg content introduced by spray pyrolysis in a ZnO wurzite structure reported in the literature. The comparison of the emission and absorption spectra shows the presence of an increasing Stokes shift with Mg content. This phenomenon is partialy related with the presence of potential _uctuations due to an statistic alloy disorder. MSM photodetectors have been processed on previously characterized Zn(Mg)O _lms. These devices have shown a shift in the absorption edge from 3.32 to 4.02 eV with the increase in Mg content, high responsivity values (10-103 A/W) and high contrast ratios between illuminated and dark responsivities (10-107). These values are explained by the presence of a gain mechanism and a reduction of dark current in the ZnMgO samples. Zn(Mg)O quantum dots have also been grown using spray pyrolysis with Mg concentrations between 0 and 100% and with average widths ranging 4 to 6 nm. Structural measurements show that at a Mg concentration of 45% the cubic phase appears, coexisting with the hexagonal phase up to an 85% concentration of Mg content. From 85% onwards the quantum dots show only the cubic phase. Absorption measurements performed in these structures reveal a shift in the absorption edge from 3.33 to 3.55 eV when the Mg content increases up to 40 %.

This study explored the utility of the impact response surface (IRS) approach for investigating model ensemble crop yield responses under a large range of changes in climate. IRSs of spring and winter wheat Triticum aestivum yields were constructed from a 26-member ensemble of process-based crop simulation models for sites in Finland, Germany and Spain across a latitudinal transect. The sensitivity of modelled yield to systematic increments of changes in temperature (-2 to +9°C) and precipitation (-50 to +50%) was tested by modifying values of baseline (1981 to 2010) daily weather, with CO2 concentration fixed at 360 ppm. The IRS approach offers an effective method of portraying model behaviour under changing climate as well as advantages for analysing, comparing and presenting results from multi-model ensemble simulations. Though individual model behaviour occasionally departed markedly from the average, ensemble median responses across sites and crop varieties indicated that yields decline with higher temperatures and decreased precipitation and increase with higher precipitation. Across the uncertainty ranges defined for the IRSs, yields were more sensitive to temperature than precipitation changes at the Finnish site while sensitivities were mixed at the German and Spanish sites. Precipitation effects diminished under higher temperature changes. While the bivariate and multi-model characteristics of the analysis impose some limits to interpretation, the IRS approach nonetheless provides additional insights into sensitivities to inter-model and inter-annual variability. Taken together, these sensitivities may help to pinpoint processes such as heat stress, vernalisation or drought effects requiring refinement in future model development.

Vertical diodes of epitaxial graphene on n 4H-SiC were investigated. The graphene Raman spectraexhibited a higher intensity in the G-line than the 2D-line, indicative of a few-layer graphene film.Rectifying properties improved at low temperatures as the reverse leakage decreased over six ordersof magnitude without freeze-out in either material. Carrier concentration of 10 16 cm 3in the SiCremained stable down to 15 K, while accumulation charge decreased and depletion width increasedin forward bias. The low barrier height of 0.08 eV and absence of recombination-induced emissionindicated majority carrier field emission as the dominant conduction mechanism.

`Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus´ is the most prevalent Liberibacter sp. associated with huanglongbing (HLB) in Brazil. Within São Paulo state (SP), HLB has spread more rapidly to and reached higher incidence in regions with relatively mild (cooler) summer temperatures. This suggests that climate can influence disease spread and severity. ?Ca. L. asiaticus? titers on soft, immature leaves from infected ?Valencia? sweet orange plants exposed to different temperature regimes and adult Diaphorina citri fed for 48 h on these plants for ?Ca. L. asiaticus? acquisition were determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction in two experiments. The first experiment included plants with three levels of infection, three incubation periods (IPs), and air temperatures favorable (14.6 to 28°C) and unfavorable (24 to 38°C) to ?Ca. L. asiaticus?. The second included plants with severe late-stage infections, 10 IPs (based on 3-day intervals over 27 days), and three air temperature regimes (12 to 24, 18 to 30, and 24 to 38°C). Overall, ?Ca. L. asiaticus? titers and the percentages of ?Ca. L. asiaticus?-positive psyllids were lower in plants maintained at the warmer temperature regime (24 to 38°C) than in plants maintained in the cooler regimes. The results suggest that the lower incidence and slower spread of ?Ca. L. asiaticus? to warmer regions of SP are related to the influence of ambient temperatures on titers of ?Ca. L. asiaticus? in leaves.

Climate projections indicate that rising temperatures will affect summer crops in the southern Iberian Peninsula. The aim of this study was to obtain projections of the impacts of rising temperatures, and of higher frequency of extreme events on irrigated maize, and to evaluate some adaptation strategies. The study was conducted at several locations in Andalusia using the CERES-Maize crop model, previously calibrated/validated with local experimental datasets. The simulated climate consisted of projections from regional climate models from the ENSEMBLES project; these were corrected for daily temperature and precipitation with regard to the E-OBS observational dataset. These bias-corrected projections were used with the CERES-Maize model to generate future impacts. Crop model results showed a decrease in maize yield by the end of the 21st century from 6 to 20%, a decrease of up to 25% in irrigation water requirements, and an increase in irrigation water productivity of up to 22%, due to earlier maturity dates and stomatal closure caused by CO2 increase. When adaptation strategies combining earlier sowing dates and cultivar changes were considered, impacts were compensated, and maize yield increased up to 14%, compared with the baseline period (1981-2010), with similar reductions in crop irrigation water requirements. Effects of extreme maximum temperatures rose to 40% at the end of the 21st century, compared with the baseline. Adaptation resulted in an overall reduction in extreme Tmax damages in all locations, with the exception of Granada, where losses were limited to 8%.
