This article is intended to state that Technical Drawing is a multiple tool of expression and communication essential to develop inquiry processes, the scientifically basis and comprehension of drawings and technological designs that can be manufactured. We demonstrate graphically and analytically that spatial vision and graphic thinking allow us to identify graphically real life problems, develop proposals of solutions to be analysed from different points of view, plan and develop the project, provide information needed to make decisions on objects and technological processes. From the knowledge of Technical Drawing and CAD tools we have developed graphic analyses to improve and optimize our proposed modification of the geometry of the rectangular cells of conventional bricks by hexagonal cells, which is protected by a Spanish patent owned by the Polytechnic University of Madrid. This new internal geometry of the bricks will improve the efficiency and the acoustic damping of walls built with the ceramic bricks of horizontal hollow, maintaining the same size of the conventional bricks, without increasing costs either in the manufacture and the sale. A single brick will achieve the width equivalent to more than FOUR conventional bricks.

This paper presents the application of the Integral Masonry System (IMS) to the construction of earthquake resistant houses and its experimental study. To verify the security of this new type of building in seismic areas of the third world two prototypes have been tested, one with adobe and the other with hollow brick. In both cases it’s a two-story 6x6x6 m3 house built to scale 1/2. The tests are carried out at the Laboratory of Antiseismic Structures of the Department of Engineering, Pontifical Catholic University of Peru in Lima, in collaboration with the UPM (Technical University of Madrid). This article shows the design process of the prototypes to test, including the sizing of the reinforcements, the characteristics of the tests and the results obtained. These results show that the IMS with adobe or brick remains stable with no significant cracks faced with a severe earthquake, with an estimated acceleration of 1.8 g.

The Laboratory of Materials seminar is an optional course offered to students in the School of Architecture in Madrid. It is taught during 35 class hours in the laboratory of materials distributed in two hours and forty minutes weekly. One of the working lines is the preparation of traditional mortars made by students groups, each one of 4 or 5 members. It is basically a practical course, and students have to prepare a group of tests pieces in order to confirm the initial hypothesis, or when needed, make innovations. The test pieces are of 150mmx150mmx10mm and applied to big size hollow bricks, prismatic test pieces of 40mmx40mmx160mm to apply physical and mechanical tests and brick wallings of varied dimensions.

Abstract This thesis is centered on the availability to use polymerizable liquid crystals to develop non-display application LC devices. Liquid crystal properties make them useful for the development of security devices in applications of authentication and detection of fakes, and also to achieve polymer dispersed LC devices to be used for different applications that will be studied here. Induced orientation of liquid crystal molecules and birefringence are the two main properties used in these devices. A standard liquid crystal device is a sandwich consisting of two parallel glass substrates carrying a thin transparent ITO (Indium‐Tin‐Oxide) electrode on their inner surfaces with the liquid crystal in the middle. The first part of this thesis will describe the most important parameters describing a liquid crystal cell. This basis is necessary for the understanding of later chapters where models of the liquid crystal devices will be discussed and developed. In the case of security devices the standard structure of an LC device has been modified by eliminating the glass substrates in order to achieve plastic and flexible devices. The second part of the thesis includes a detailed description of the devices achieved and the manufacturing protocols that have been developed ad-hoc. The optical and electrooptical properties and the characterization equipment are described here as well. Employing nematic liquid crystal and dichroic colorants, we have developed devices that show, with the aid of a polarizer, multiple images on each side of the device. By different alignment techniques it is possible to create any kind of symbols, drawings or motifs with a grayscale; the more complex the created device is, the more difficult is to fake it. To identify the motifs it is necessary to use polarized light. Depending on whether the polarizer is located in front of the LC cell or behind it, different motifs from one or the other substrate are shown. The effect arises from the dopant color dye added to the liquid crystal, the induced orientation and the twist structure. In practice, a grazing reflection on a dielectric surface is polarized enough to see the effect. Any LC flat panel display (LCD TV, computer, mobile phone) can obviously be used as backlight as well. On the other hand, by using a mixture of polymerizable and non-polymerizable nematics liquid crystals it is also possible to achieve LCPC (Liquid Crystal Polymer Composite) devices that show really interesting electrooptical characteristics using low switching voltages. Polymerizable LC creates a hollow structure inside the sandwich glass cell that keep nematics liquid crystal confined creating microdomains. Homogeneous and homeotropic alignments have been used to develop inverse switching mode LCPCs. Due to the double LC oriented structure, the outgoing scattered light from these devices is already polarized. The polarization axis coincides with LC molecules director, the alignment direction promoted. The novelties derived from the investigation presented here, new ultrafast inverse LCPC with polarized outgoing scattered light based on oriented nematic LC mixture, and an internationally patented security and authentication device based on nematics (doped with dichroic dye) oriented polymerizable LC.

A novel compression scheme is proposed, in which hollow targets with specifically curved structures initially filled with uniform matter, are driven by converging shock waves. The self-similar dynamics is analyzed for converging and diverging shock waves. The shock-compressed densities and pressures are much higher than those achieved using spherical shocks due to the geometric accumulation. Dynamic behavior is demonstrated using two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. The linear stability analysis for the spherical geometry reveals a new dispersion relation with cut-off mode numbers as a function of the specific heat ratio, above which eigenmode perturbations are smeared out in the converging phase.

We present the possibility of a low work-function material, calcium aluminate electride, being used for a coating on a bare electrodynamic tether system. Analyses suggest that the coating would eliminate the need for an active cathodic device like a hollow cathode and, consequently, eliminate the need for an expellant to the hollow cathode, thus resulting in an electrodynamic tether system that requires no consumables. Applications include on-orbit power generation and deorbiting debris from low Earth orbit in a simple and trouble-free manner.

New Electrodynarnic Tether Technology (NETT) is an experiment we proposed to ESA as part of the Columbus Precursor Flights. It was designed to fly as an exposed payload in the Spacelab carrier. Its primary objective is performance testing for the innovative bare tether concept. The experiment also includes two scientific objectives, specific for uninsulated tethers: i) detection of artificial auroral effects produced by secondary electron emission, and ii) detection of VLF wave emission. Additional objectives of the project are space performance of an electron-emitting hollow cathode and engineering verification of an open-loop deployment strategy.

ED bare theters are best systems to deorbit S/C at end of service. For near polar orbits, usual tethers kept vertical by the gravity gradient, yield too weak magnetic drag. Here we propose keeping tethers perpendicular to the orbital plane. they mus be rigid and short for structural reasons, requiring power supply like Ion thrusters. terher tube-booms that can be rolled up on a drum would lie on each side of the S/C. One boom, carying in idle Hollow Cathode, collects electrons; the opposite boom's HC ejects electrons.

A 3-year Project started on November 1 2010, financed by the European Commision within the FP-7 Space Program, and aimed at developing an efficient de-orbit system that could be carried on board by future spacecraft launched into LEO, will be presented. The operational system will deploy a thin uninsulated tape-tether to collect electrons as a giant Langmuir probe, using no propellant/no power supply, and generating power on board. This project will involve free-fall tests, and laboratory hypervelocity-impact and tether-current tests, and design/Manufacturing of subsystems: interface elements, electric control and driving module, electron-ejecting plasma contactor, tether-deployment mechanism/end-mass, and tape samples. Preliminary results to be presented involve: i) devising criteria for sizing the three disparate tape dimensions, affecting mass, resistance, current-collection, magnetic self-field, and survivability against debris itself; ii) assessing the dynamical relevance of tether parameters in implementing control laws to limit oscillations in /off the orbital plane, where passive stability may be marginal; iii) deriving a law for bare-tape current from numerical simulations and chamber tests, taking into account ambient magnetic field, ion ram motion, and adiabatic electron trapping; iv) determining requirements on a year-dormant hollow cathode under long times/broad emission-range operation, and trading-off against use of electron thermal emission; v) determining requirements on magnetic components and power semiconductors for a control module that faces high voltage/power operation under mass/volume limitations; vi) assessing strategies to passively deploy a wide conductive tape that needs no retrieval, while avoiding jamming and ending at minimum libration; vii) evaluating the tape structure as regards conductive and dielectric materials, both lengthwise and in its cross-section, in particular to prevent arcing in triple-point junctions.

Hollow heart is a problem quite specific to seedless watermelon, affecting to all varieties. Percentage of fruits affected range from nil to up to more than 50% of the fruits. The acoustic impulse response of 158 watermelons was measured using a prepolarized free-field microphone. After carrying out a fast Fourier transformation on the time signal of the generated sound several acoustic parameters were evaluated. Values of spectral density were significantly different between 'good watermelons' and 'hollow heart watermelons'.

This paper describes a fully automatic simultaneous lung vessel and airway enhancement filter. The approach consists of a Frangi-based multiscale vessel enhancement filtering specifically designed for lung vessel and airway detection, where arteries and veins have high contrast with respect to the lung parenchyma, and airway walls are hollow tubular structures with a non negative response using the classical Frangi's filter. The features extracted from the Hessian matrix are used to detect centerlines and approximate walls of airways, decreasing the filter response in those areas by applying a penalty function to the vesselness measure. We validate the segmentation method in 20 CT scans with different pathological states within the VESSEL12 challenge framework. Results indicate that our approach obtains good results, decreasing the number of false positives in airway walls.

Polymer/inorganic nanoparticle nanocomposites have garnered considerable academic and industrial interest over recent decades in the development of advanced materials for a wide range of applications. In this respect, the dispersion of so-called inorganic fullerene-like (IF) nanoparticles, e.g., tungsten disulfide (IF-WS2) or molybdenum disulfide (IF-MoS2), into polymeric matrices is emerging as a new strategy. The surprising properties of these layered metal dichalcogenides such as high impact resistance and superior tribological behavior, attributed to their nanoscale size and hollow quasi-spherical shape, open up a wide variety of opportunities for applications of these inorganic compounds. The present work presents a detailed overview on research in the area of IF-based polymer nanocomposites, with special emphasis on the use of IF-WS2 nanoparticles as environmentally friendly reinforcing fillers. The incorporation of IF particles has been shown to be efficient for improving thermal, mechanical and tribological properties of various thermoplastic polymers, such as polypropylene, nylon-6, poly(phenylene sulfide), poly(ether ether ketone), where nanocomposites were fabricated by simple melt-processing routes without the need for modifiers or surfactants. This new family of nanocomposites exhibits similar or enhanced performance when compared with nanocomposites that incorporate carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers or nanoclays, but are substantially more cost-effective, efficient and environmentally satisfactory. Most recently, innovative approaches have been described that exploit synergistic effects to produce new materials with enhanced properties, including the combined use of micro- and nanoparticles such as IF-WS2/nucleating agent or IF-WS2/carbon fiber, as well as dual nanoparticle systems such as SWCNT/IF-WS2 where each nanoparticle has different characteristics. The structure–property relationships of these nanocomposites are discussed and potential applications proposed ranging from medicine to the aerospace, automotive and electronics industries.

ABSTRACT Over the years the concrete structures have been increasing their market share, replacing the masonry structures of stone or brick and subtracting as well the participation of the metallic structures. One of the first problems encountered in the implementing of the reinforced concrete structures was connecting a phase structure of this type at a later stage or a subsequent amendment. Until the 80s and 90s the connections of one phase of a reinforced concrete structure with a subsequent first phase were done by leaving the steel plates embedded in the fresh concrete using hooks or bent bars coated with expanded polystyrene. Once the concrete had hardened new bars could be connected to the next stage by welding them to the surface plate or by straightening the bent bars to embed them in the fresh concrete of the next phase. These systems required a previous knowledge of the existence and scope of the subsequent phase before concreting the previous one. They also required a very precise and complex rethinking of the connecting elements. Another existing problem in the concrete structures was the adhesion of a fresh concrete to a previously hardened concrete, since the contact surface of both concretes leaded to a weak point with low adherence. Since the 80s, the chemicals construction industry experienced a breakthrough in the development of products that generate a good grip on the concrete. This technological advance had its application both in the grip on one hardened fresh concrete and in the adhesion of bar post-installed in holes of hardened concrete. This system was termed as adherent anchors of steel bars in hardened concrete. The generic way of executing this system is by firstly drilling a cylindrical hole in the concrete support using a specific tool such as a drill. Then, cleaning the bore and filling it with bonding material to lastly, introduce the steel bar. These adherent anchors are divided into cement and chemical anchors, the latter being the most common, reliable, durable and easy to run. The use of adhesive anchor of steel bars in hardened concrete has spread across the production spectrum turning itself into a very common solution in both construction of reinforced concrete civil engineering and construction, and industrial works, installations and fixing elements as well. The execution of an anchor of a steel bar in hardened concrete depends on numerous variables which together or as a single solution may significantly affect the strength of the anchor. We are referring to variables of anchors which are often not considered, such as the diameter difference between the rod and the bore, the drilling system, cleansing of the drill, type of anchor material, the moisture of the substrate, the direction of the drill, the drill’s height, etc. During recent years, the emergence of self-compacting concrete adds an additional variable which has hardly been studied so far. According to mentioned this thesis aims to study the main performance conditions in the resistance of conventional and self-compacting concrete anchors. This research is primarily focused on the evaluation of the influence of several variables on the strength of the anchoring, both in conventional concrete and self-compacting concrete. In order to complete this study it has been required the manufacture of two concrete supports on which to develop the tests. One of the blocks has been manufactured with conventional concrete and the other with self-compacting concrete. A total of 174 steel bar anchors have been made in each one of the concrete pieces varying the studied parameters in order to obtain results for all variables considered. The tests to be performed on both blocks are exactly the same in order to compare the difference between an anchor on a stand with vibrated concrete (HVC) and a self-compacting concrete (SCC). Each type of test required two repetitions in the same piece. The pulling test of the bars was made with a hollow jack and with an instrumentation system for reading and recording data in real time. The use of a powerful statistical tool in the analysis of the results allowed to numerically determine and evaluate the influence of the variables considered in the resistance of the anchors made. It has likewise enabled to differentiate the results obtained in the self-compacting and conventional concretes, from both the outlook of the mechanical strength and the deformations undergone by uprooting. The mechanical strength of an anchor is defined as the strength undergone in a direction of the bar to uproot it from the support. Likewise, the movement is defined as the separation between a fixed point of the bar and a fixed point from the support considering the direction of the bar. These points are only determined once the anchor is finished, with the bar, at the intersection in the flat surface of the support. The conclusions obtained have established which variables affect the execution of the anchors and in what quantity. They have also permitted to determine the difference between the anchors in vibrated concrete and selfcompacting concrete with very interesting results that also allow to assess the influence of these mentioned variables. Three groups are highlighted among the conclusions called high influence, low influence and no influence. In every case is necessary to perform the study in terms of loading and movement. In terms of loading, there are considered as high influence two variables: drilling machinery and anchorage material. In terms of movement, there are considered as high influence the drilling diameter and the cleaning and moisture of the support, besides the drilling machinery and the anchorage material. Variables such as type of concrete, drilling direction and cleaning and moisture of the support are considered of low influence in terms of load. In terms of movement, the type of concrete and the direction of the drilling are considered variables of low influence. Within the no influence section in terms of loading, there are included the diameter of the drilling and the height of the drill. In terms of loading, the height of the drill is considered as a no influence variable. We can affirm that the differences among the loading values increase significantly in terms of movement.

A mission on board a sounding rocket to carry out two bare-tether experiments is proposed: a test of orbital-motion-limited (OML) collection and the proof-of-flight of a technique to determine the (neutral) density vertical profile in the critical E-layer. Since full bias from the motional field will be small (~ 20V), corresponding to a tape 1 km long and V rocket <8 km/s, a power source with a range of supply voltages of few kV would be used. First, the negative terminal of the supply would be connected to the tape, and the positive terminal to a round, conductive boom of length 10 - 20 m; electrons collected by the boom cross the supply into the tape, where they leak out at the rate of ion impact plus secondary emission. Determination of the density profile from measurements of auroral emissions observed from the rocket, as secondaries racing down the magnetic field reach an E-layer footprint, are discussed. Next the positive terminal of the voltage supply is connected to the tape, and the negative terminal to a Hollow Cathode (HC); electrons now collected by the tape cross the supply, and are ejected at the HC. The opposite connections, with current collection operated by tape and boom, and operating on electrons and ions, and through partial switching in the supply, allow testing OML collection in almost all respects it depends on.

A quasi-cylindrical approximation is used to analyse the axisymmetric swirling flow of a liquid with a hollow air core in the chamber of a pressure swirl atomizer. The liquid is injected into the chamber with an azimuthal velocity component through a number of slots at the periphery of one end of the chamber, and flows out as an anular sheet through a central orifice at the other end, following a conical convergence of the chamber wall. An effective inlet condition is used to model the effects of the slots and the boundary layer that develops at the nearby endwall of the chamber. An analysis is presented of the structure of the liquid sheet at the end of the exit orifice, where the flow becomes critical in the sense that upstream propagation of long-wave perturbations ceases to be possible. This nalysis leads to a boundary condition at the end of the orifice that is an extension of the condition of maximum flux used with irrotational models of the flow. As is well known, the radial pressure gradient induced by the swirling flow in the bulk of the chamber causes the overpressure that drives the liquid towards the exit orifice, and also leads to Ekman pumping in the boundary layers of reduced azimuthal velocity at the convergent wall of the chamber and at the wall opposite to the exit orifice. The numerical results confirm the important role played by the boundary layers. They make the thickness of the liquid sheet at the end of the orifice larger than predicted by rrotational models, and at the same time tend to decrease the overpressure required to pass a given flow rate through the chamber, because the large axial velocity in the boundary layers takes care of part of the flow rate. The thickness of the boundary layers increases when the atomizer constant (the inverse of a swirl number, proportional to the flow rate scaled with the radius of the exit orifice and the circulation around the air core) decreases. A minimum value of this parameter is found below which the layer of reduced azimuthal velocity around the air core prevents the pressure from increasing and steadily driving the flow through the exit orifice. The effects of other parameters not accounted for by irrotational models are also analysed in terms of their influence on the boundary layers.
