CPV receivers are made of materials with very different lineal expansion coefficients. Strong variations in DNI due to the passage of clouds can cause sudden temperature changes that creates mechanical stress. For common solder and metal filled polymers the plastic limit could be reached causing substantial fatigue. The best forecast of receiver reliability is therefore achieved by applying an intermittent light source with nominal irradiance level and a number of cycles equal to the expected cloud passages for a given site. The UPM has developed specialized equipment, dubbed the LYSS (Light cYcling Stressing Source), for carrying out such experiments. The small thermal capacity of receivers allows simulating more than 25000 cycles per week. The number of deep transients expected for Madrid in 30 years operation, based on available data, is about 45000. We are currently using the system to cycle a ?Ge/Ag Epoxy/aluminum? receiver, which shows no degradation after 20000 cycles. The equipment can cast up to 200 and 70 W/cm2 on 0.1 and 1 cm2 cells, respectively.

The evapotranspiration (ETc) of sprinkler-irrigated rice was determined for the semiarid conditions of NE Spain during 2001, 2002 and 2003. The surface renewal method, after calibration against the eddy covariance method, was used to obtain values of sensible heat flux (H) from high-frequency temperature readings. Latent heat flux values were obtained by solving the energy balance equation. Finally, lysimeter measurements were used to validate the evapotranspiration values obtained with the surface renewal method. Seasonal rice evapotranspiration was about 750–800 mm. Average daily ETc for mid-season (from 90 to 130 days after sowing) was 5.1, 4.5 and 6.1 mm day−1 for 2001, 2002 and 2003, respectively. The experimental weekly crop coefficients fluctuated in the range of 0.83–1.20 for 2001, 0.81–1.03 for 2002 and 0.84–1.15 for 2003. The total growing season was about 150–160 days. In average, the crop coefficients for the initial (Kcini), mid-season (Kcmid) and late-season stages (Kcend) were 0.92, 1.06 and 1.03, respectively, the length of these stages being about 55, 45 and 25 days, respectively.

Among the Agrobacterium T-DNA genes, rolB, rolC, orf13, orf8, lso, 6b and several other genes encode weakly homologous proteins with remarkable effects on plant growth. The 6b oncogene induces tumors and enations. In order to study its properties we have used transgenic tobacco plants that carry a dexamethasone-inducible 6b gene, dex-T-6b. Upon induction, dex-T-6b plants develop a large array of morphological modifications, some of which involve abnormal cell expansion. In the present investigation, dex-T-6b-induced expansion was studied in intact leaves and an in vitro leaf disc system. Although T-6b and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) both induced expansion and were non-additive, T-6b expression did not increase IAA levels, nor did it induce an IAA-responsive gene. Fusicoccin (FC) is known to stimulate expansion by increasing cell wall plasticity. T-6b- and FC-induced expansion were additive at saturating FC concentrations, indicating that T-6b does not act by a similar mechanism to FC. T-6b expression led to higher leaf osmolality values, in contrast to FC, suggesting that the T-6b gene induces expansion by increasing osmolyte concentrations. Metabolite profiling showed that glucose and fructose played a major role in this increase. We infer that T-6b disrupts the osmoregulatory controls that govern cell expansion during development and wound healing.

In the case of large burnup, a control rod (CR) guide tube in the pressurized water reactor of a commercial nuclear power plant might bend. As a consequence, a CR drop experiment may indicate an event of a CR partially inserted and whether the CR should be deemed inoperable. Early prevention of such an event can be achieved by measuring two friction coefficients: the hydraulic coefficient and the sliding coefficient. The hydraulic coefficient hardly changes, so that the curvature of the guide tube can only be detected thanks to a variation of the sliding coefficient. A simple model for the CR drop is established and validated with CR drop experiments. If tmx denotes the instant of CR maximum velocity, a linear relationship between (tmx)_2 and the sliding coefficient is found.

A previous axisymmetric model of the supersonic expansion of a collisionless, hot plasma in a divergent magnetic nozzle is extended here in order to include electron-inertia effects. Up to dominant order on all components of the electron velocity, electron momentum equations still reduce to three conservation laws. Electron inertia leads to outward electron separation from the magnetic streamtubes. The progressive plasma filling of the adjacent vacuum region is consistent with electron-inertia being part of finite electron Larmor radius effects, which increase downstream and eventually demagnetize the plasma. Current ambipolarity is not fulfilled and ion separation can be either outwards or inwards of magnetic streamtubes, depending on their magnetization. Electron separation penalizes slightly the plume efficiency and is larger for plasma beams injected with large pressure gradients. An alternative nonzero electron-inertia model [E. Hooper, J. Propul. Power 9, 757 (1993)] based on cold plasmas and current ambipolarity, which predicts inwards electron separation, is discussed critically. A possible competition of the gyroviscous force with electron-inertia effects is commented briefly.

The transition that the expansion flow of laser-produced plasmas experiences when one moves from long, low intensity pulses (temperature vanishing at the isentropic plasma-vacuum front, lying at finite distance) to short, intense ones (non-zero, uniform temperature at the plasma-vacuum front, lying at infinity) is studied. For plznar geometry and lqge ion number Z, the transition occurs for dq5/dt=0.14(27/8)k712Z’1zn$/m4f, 12nK,,; mi, and K are laser intensity, critical density, ion mass, and Spitzer’s heat conduction coefficient. This result remains valid for finite Zit,h ough the numerical factor in d$/dt is different. Shorter wavelength lasers and higher 4 plasmas allow faster rising pulses below transition.

A previous hydrodynamic model of the expansion of a laser-produced plasma, using classical (Spitzer) heat flux, is reconsidered with a nonlocal heat flux model. The nonlocal law is shown to be valid beyond the range of validity of the classical law, breaking down ultimately, however, in agreement with recent predictions.

The assessment of the uncertainty levels on the design and safety parameters for the innovative European Sodium Fast Reactor (ESFR) is mandatory. Some of these relevant safety quantities are the Doppler and void reactivity coefficients, whose uncertainties are quantified. Besides, the nuclear reaction data where an improvement will certainly benefit the design accuracy are identified. This work has been performed with the SCALE 6.1 codes suite and its multigroups cross sections library based on ENDF/B-VII.0 evaluation.

This paper is focused on the chloride-induced corrosion of the rebar in RC. A comprehensive model for the chloride ingress into concrete is presented, with special attention to non-linear diffusion coefficients, chloride binding isotherms and convection phenomena. Based on the results of chloride diffusion, subsequent active corrosion is assumed and the radial expansion of the corroded reinforcement reproduced. For cracking simulation, the Strong Discontinuity Approach is applied. Both models (initiation and propagation corrosion stages) are incorporated in the same finite element program and chained. Comparisons with experimental results are carried out, with reasonably good agreements being obtained, especially for cracking patterns. Major limitations refer to difficulties to establish precise levels of basic data such as the chloride ion content at concrete surface, the chloride threshold concentration that triggers active corrosion, the rate of oxide production or the rust mechanical properties.

Como conclusión, se plantea la generalización de la clásica ecuación que Skempton formuló hace casi 60 años y que permite interpretar la generación de presión intersticial para el aparato de ensayo triaxial. ncrease in pore pressure depending on the nature of the excitation, the type of soil and the drainage conditions of the ground are generated by loads acting on a saturated soil. It has approached the study of the generation of the pore pressure from usually consolidated soft soil samples from the basement of the Port of Barcelona. Data from an adequate experimental campaign using simple shear machine have been used, and the aspects that are considered key to the process of generation of pore pressure in the soil under different loading conditions acting have been identified. In conclusion, the generalization of Skempton's classical equation (formulated almost 60 years ago) and the interpretation of the pore pressure generation for triaxial test apparatus have been proposed.
