Crossed-arch domes are a singular type of ribbed vaults. Their characteristic feature is that the ribs that form the vault are intertwined, forming polygons or stars, leaving an empty space in the centre. The earliest known vaults of this type are found in the Great Mosque of Córdoba, built ca. 960 a.C. The type spread through Spain, and the north of Africa in the 10th to the 16th Centuries, and was used by Guarini and Vittone in the 17th and 18th Centuries in Italy. However, it was used only in a few buildings. Though the literature about the structural behaviour of ribbed Gothic vaults is extensive, so far no structural analysis of crossed arch domes has been made. The purpose of this work is, first to show the way to attack such an analysis within the frame of Modern Limit Analysis of Masonry Structures (Heyman 1995), and then to apply the approach to study the stability of the dome of the Capilla de Villaviciosa. The work may give some clues to art and architectural historians to understand better the origin and development of Islamic dome architecture.

Remote sensing (RS) with aerial robots is becoming more usual in every day time in Precision Agriculture (PA) practices, do to their advantages over conventional methods. Usually, available commercial platforms providing off-the-shelf waypoint navigation are adopted to perform visual surveys over crop fields, with the purpose to acquire specific image samples. The way in which a waypoint list is computed and dispatched to the aerial robot when mapping non empty agricultural workspaces has not been yet discussed. In this paper we propose an offline mission planner approach that computes an efficient coverage path subject to some constraints by decomposing the environment approximately into cells. Therefore, the aim of this work is contributing with a feasible waypoints-based tool to support PA practices

The image by Computed Tomography is a non-invasive alternative for observing soil structures, mainly pore space. The pore space correspond in soil data to empty or free space in the sense that no material is present there but only fluids, the fluid transport depend of pore spaces in soil, for this reason is important identify the regions that correspond to pore zones. In this paper we present a methodology in order to detect pore space and solid soil based on the synergy of the image processing, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. The mathematical morphology is an image processing technique used for the purpose of image enhancement. In order to find pixels groups with a similar gray level intensity, or more or less homogeneous groups, a novel image sub-segmentation based on a Possibilistic Fuzzy c-Means (PFCM) clustering algorithm was used. The Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are very efficient for demanding large scale and generic pattern recognition applications for this reason finally a classifier based on artificial neural network is applied in order to classify soil images in two classes, pore space and solid soil respectively.

Este proyecto desarrolla una metodología de toma de datos y análisis para la optimización de la producción de la fase de avance de construcción del túnel de Seiró. Este túnel forma parte de las obras de construcción de la línea ferroviaria de alta velocidad corredor norte-noroeste a su paso por la provincia de Ourense. Mediante el análisis de diversos parámetros del diseño de la voladura, en la construcción de un túnel de 73 m2 de sección, en roca granítica, se pretende optimizar el tiempo de ciclo de excavación. Se estudia la variación de la fragmentación, el contorno y el avance obtenido y la influencia sobre estos parámetros del esquema de tiro y el tipo de cuele empleados y sus repercusiones en el tiempo de ciclo. El resultado del análisis concluye que el esquema de tiro óptimo, entre los usados, está formado por 112 barrenos de 51 mm de diámetro, con un cuele de 4 barrenos vacíos, que da lugar a mejores resultados de avance, contorno y fragmentación sin afectar negativamente al tiempo de ciclo. ABSTRACT This project develops a methodology for excavation cycle optimization by collecting and analyzing operational data for Seiró Tunnel construction site. This tunnel is included in construction project of high speed railway, located in N-NW direction, in Ourense province. Analyzing several blasting design parameters from the construction of a 73 m2 tunnel, in granitic rock, allows the optimization of cycle time. Variations in fragmentation, contour and advance length and influence about those parameters from blasting design und cut type used and its impact in the cycle time. Analysis results show up the best blasting design, among used, is formed of 112 holes 51 mm diameter, and a parallel cut with 4 empty holes. This configuration achieves the best fragmentation, contour and advance length without negative effects in time cycle

This paper focuses on the railway rolling stock circulation problem in rapid transit networks, in which frequencies are high and distances are relatively short. Although the distances are not very large, service times are high due to the large number of intermediate stops required to allow proper passenger flow. The main complicating issue is the fact that the available capacity at depot stations is very low, and both capacity and rolling stock are shared between different train lines. This forces the introduction of empty train movements and rotation maneuvers, to ensure sufficient station capacity and rolling stock availability. However, these shunting operations may sometimes be difficult to perform and can easily malfunction, causing localized incidents that could propagate throughout the entire network due to cascading effects. This type of operation will be penalized with the goal of selectively avoiding them and ameliorating their high malfunction probabilities. Critic trains, defined as train services that come through stations that have a large number of passengers arriving at the platform during rush hours, are also introduced. We illustrate our model using computational experiments drawn from RENFE (the main Spanish operator of suburban passenger trains) in Madrid, Spain. The results of the model, achieved in approximately 1 min, have been received positively by RENFE planners

The Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) semiconductor is a potential photovoltaic material due to its optoelectronic properties. These optoelectronic properties can be potentially improved by the insertion of intermediate states into the energy bandgap. We explore this possibility using Cr as an impurity. We carried out first-principles calculations within the density functional theory analyzing three substitutions: Cu, Sn, or Zn by Cr. In all cases, the Cr introduces a deeper band into the host energy bandgap. Depending on the substitution, this band is full, empty, or partially full. The absorption coefficients in the independent-particle approximation have also been obtained. Comparison between the pure and doped host's absorption coefficients shows that this deeper band opens more photon absorption channels and could therefo:e increase the solar-light absorption with respect to the host.

This paper presents a new hazard-consistent ground motion characterization of the Itoiz dam site, located in Northern Spain. Firstly, we propose a methodology with different approximation levels to the expected ground motion at the dam site. Secondly, we apply this methodology taking into account the particular characteristics of the site and of the dam. Hazard calculations were performed following the Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment method using a logic tree, which accounts for different seismic source zonings and different ground-motion attenuation relationships. The study was done in terms of peak ground acceleration and several spectral accelerations of periods coinciding with the fundamental vibration periods of the dam. In order to estimate these ground motions we consider two different dam conditions: when the dam is empty (T = 0.1 s) and when it is filled with water to its maximum capacity (T = 0.22 s). Additionally, seismic hazard analysis is done for two return periods: 975 years, related to the project earthquake, and 4,975 years, identified with an extreme event. Soil conditions were also taken into account at the site of the dam. Through the proposed methodology we deal with different forms of characterizing ground motion at the study site. In a first step, we obtain the uniform hazard response spectra for the two return periods. In a second step, a disaggregation analysis is done in order to obtain the controlling earthquakes that can affect the dam. Subsequently, we characterize the ground motion at the dam site in terms of specific response spectra for target motions defined by the expected values SA (T) of T = 0.1 and 0.22 s for the return periods of 975 and 4,975 years, respectively. Finally, synthetic acceleration time histories for earthquake events matching the controlling parameters are generated using the discrete wave-number method and subsequently analyzed. Because of the short relative distances between the controlling earthquakes and the dam site we considered finite sources in these computations. We conclude that directivity effects should be taken into account as an important variable in this kind of studies for ground motion characteristics.

We consider here uniform distributed pushdown automata systems (UDPAS), namely distributed pushdown automata systems having all components identical pushdown automata. We consider here just a single protocol for activating/deactivating components, namely a component stays active as long as it can perform moves, as well as two ways of accepting the input word: by empty stacks (all components have empty stacks) or by final states (all components are in final states), when the input word is completely read. We mainly investigate the computational power of UDPAS accepting by empty stacks and a few decidability and closure properties of the families of languages they define. Some directions for further work and open problems are also discussed.

ZnTe doped with high concentrations of oxygen has been proposed in previous works as intermediate band (IB) material for photovoltaic applications. The existence of extra optical transitions related to the presence of an IB has already been demonstrated in this material and it has been possible to measure the absorption coefficient of the transitions from the valence band (VB) to the IB. In this work we present the first measurement of the absorption coefficient associated to transitions from the IB to the conduction band (CB) in ZnTe:O. The samples used are 4 ?m thick ZnTe layers with or without O in a concentration ~ 1019 cm-3, which have been grown on semi-insulating GaAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The IB-CB absorption coefficient peaks for photon energies ~ 0.4 eV. It is extracted from reflectance and transmittance spectra measured using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Under typical FTIR measurement conditions (low light intensity, broadband spectrum) the absorption coefficient in IB-to-CB transitions reaches 700 cm-1. This is much weaker than the one observed for VB-IB absorption. This result is consistent with the fact that the IB is expected to be nearly empty of electrons under equilibrium conditions in ZnTe(:O). The absorption for VB to IB transitions is also observed in the same samples through reflectance measurements performed in the visible range using a monochromator. These measurements are compared with the quantum efficiency (QE) from solar cells fabricated under similar conditions.

Nowadays patients admitted to critical care units have most of their physiological parameters measured automatically by sophisticated commercial monitoring devices. More often than not, these devices supervise whether the values of the parameters they measure lie within a pre-established range, and issue warning of deviations from this range by triggering alarms. The automation of measuring and supervising tasks not only discharges the healthcare staff of a considerable workload but also avoids human errors in these repetitive and monotonous tasks. Arguably, the most relevant physiological parameter that is still measured and supervised manually by critical care unit staff is urine output (UO). In this paper we present a patent-pending device that provides continuous and accurate measurements of patient’s UO. The device uses capacitive sensors to take continuous measurements of the height of the column of liquid accumulated in two chambers that make up a plastic container. The first chamber, where the urine inputs, has a small volume. Once it has been filled it overflows into a second bigger chamber. The first chamber provides accurate UO measures of patients whose UO has to be closely supervised, while the second one avoids the need for frequent interventions by the nursing staff to empty the container

This paper focuses on the railway rolling stock circulation problem in rapid transit networks where the known demand and train schedule must be met by a given fleet. In rapid transit networks the frequencies are high and distances are relatively short. Although the distances are not very large, service times are high due to the large number of intermediate stops required to allow proper passenger flow. The previous circumstances and the reduced capacity of the depot stations and that the rolling stock is shared between the different lines, force the introduction of empty trains and a careful control on shunting operation. In practice the future demand is generally unknown and the decisions must be based on uncertain forecast. We have developed a stochastic rolling stock formulation of the problem. The computational experiments were developed using a commercial line of the Madrid suburban rail network operated by RENFE (The main Spanish operator of suburban trains of passengers). Comparing the results obtained by deterministic scenarios and stochastic approach some useful conclusions may be obtained.

Esta tesis doctoral pretende profundizar en el conocimiento de la ecología de Ulmus laevis Pallas, especie autóctona en peligro de extinción en la Península Ibérica, con el fin de proponer medidas adecuadas para su conservación. Se ha estudiado la distribución natural de la especie atendiendo a aspectos edáficos. Los resultados muestran que U. laevis presenta menor capacidad de acidificación de la rizosfera, menor actividad de la reductasa férrica y menor homeostasis que U. minor Mill. cuando crecen en sustratos con una disponibilidad de hierro limitada. Estas diferencias ayudan a comprender la distribución de ambas especies en la Península Ibérica: U. laevis se ve restringido a suelos ácidos o moderadamente ácidos, mientras que U. minor es capaz de habitar tanto suelos ácidos como básicos. Se han analizado las propiedades hidráulicas y anatómicas de U. laevis, constatando que sus características son favorables en ambientes con gran disponibilidad hídrica y que se trata del olmo ibérico más vulnerable a la cavitación por estrés hídrico, por lo que la aridificación del clima y la pérdida de los freáticos supone un riesgo para sus poblaciones. Para evaluar la capacidad de recuperación de la especie se han estudiado la diversidad y estructura genética espacial de las dos mayores poblaciones españolas. Los resultados evidencian que estas poblaciones mantienen niveles de diversidad equiparables o ligeramente superiores a los europeos, pese a haber sufrido un cuello de botella prolongado durante las glaciaciones y a las reducciones poblacionales recientes. En la actualidad la endogamia no representa un riesgo para estas poblaciones. También se ha analizado la producción, dispersión y predación de semillas en Valdelatas (Madrid). Los resultados han mostrado que el viento dispersa las sámaras a corta distancia (<30 m) y que los años no veceros las probabilidades de establecimiento de regenerado son bajas. Además, la producción de sámaras vanas puede tratarse de un carácter adaptativo que aumenta la eficiencia biológica de la especie, ya que favorece la supervivencia de las semillas embrionadas disminuyendo sus tasas de predación pre- y post-dispersión. La modificación del hábitat de esta especie como consecuencia de las actividades humanas afecta de manera negativa al establecimiento del regenerado. La conservación de esta especie a largo plazo requiere la recuperación de los niveles freáticos y de regímenes hidrológicos que permitan avenidas, ya que estas crean las condiciones adecuadas para el establecimiento de regenerado al eliminar la vegetación preexistente y depositar barro. ABSTRACT Ulmus laevis Pallas is an endangered species in the Iberian Peninsula. Therefore, in order to be able to propose adequate management guidelines for its conservation, this PhD Thesis intends to advance the knowledge on the species ecology in the region. Firstly, the species natural distribution was studied in relation to soil nature. Results show that U. minor Mill. had a higher root ferric reductase activity and proton extrusion capability than U. laevis, and maintained a better nutrient homeostasis when grown under iron limiting conditions. These differences in root Fe acquisition efficiencies proved helpful to understand the distribution of these species in the Iberian Peninsula, where U. laevis is restricted to acid or moderately acid soils, whereas U. minor can grow both in acid and basic soils. Secondly, we studied Ulmus laevis’ xylem anatomy and hydraulic traits. These proved favourable for growing under high water availability, but highly susceptible to drought-stress cavitation. Therefore, this species is vulnerable to the Iberian Peninsula’s aridification. Spatial genetic structure and diversity were evaluated in two of the biggest U. laevis populations in Spain in order to evaluate their recovery capabilities. These populations maintain similar or slightly higher diversity levels than European populations, despite having undergone an ancestral genetic bottleneck and having suffered recent population size reductions. No inbreeding problems have been detected in these populations. Seed production, dispersal and predation were assessed in Valdelatas’ elm grove (Madrid). Despite U. laevis samaras being winged nuts, wind dispersed them short distances from the mother tree (<30 m). The seed shadow models show that non-mast years provide very few chances for the stand to regenerate due to their low full seed flux. Empty samaras deceive pre- and post-dispersal predators increasing full seed survival probabilities. Therefore, empty fruit production might be an adaptive trait that increases plant fitness. Finally, human-induced changes in water-table levels and river regulation may affect U. laevis seed dispersal and regeneration establishment negatively. The long-term conservation and expansion of this species in the Iberian Peninsula requires the recovery of water-tables and of natural hydrological regimes, as flooding eliminates vegetation, creating open microhabitats and deposits mud, creating the ideal conditions for seedling establishment.

This paper presents a description of our system for the Albayzin 2012 LRE competition. One of the main characteristics of this evaluation was the reduced number of available files for training the system, especially for the empty condition where no training data set was provided but only a development set. In addition, the whole database was created from online videos and around one third of the training data was labeled as noisy files. Our primary system was the fusion of three different i-vector based systems: one acoustic system based on MFCCs, a phonotactic system using trigrams of phone-posteriorgram counts, and another acoustic system based on RPLPs that improved robustness against noise. A contrastive system that included new features based on the glottal source was also presented. Official and postevaluation results for all the conditions using the proposed metrics for the evaluation and the Cavg metric are presented in the paper.

El término imaginario, nombra el principio y el tema central de una investigación del mundo arquitectónico, necesaria para entender las condiciones alrededor de un proceso proyectual íntimo, cargado de significaciones ideológicas y simbólicas. En diferentes interpretaciones, el inconsciente colectivo y personal, científico o social, aparece en el origen de cada pensamiento y comportamiento humano, constituyendo un universo cerrado y caótico, donde todas las ideas están en constante tensión y contradicción. Por esta razón existen nociones y construcciones lógicas y coherentes que estructuran el marco de la verisimilitud y por tanto el régimen de la realidad, mediante la verdad y la verificación. Para el proyecto arquitectónico estas configuraciones se expresan en la situación del espacio, el tiempo y el cuerpo, como elementos básicos de jerarquización de la habitabilidad y de la cohabitabilidad humana. Esta tesis pretende acotar y definir un ámbito de procesos verosímiles instalados dentro del imaginario mediante el patrimonio intangible del pensamiento mítico o utópico, donde no solamente se crean envolventes del pensamiento, de iconografía o de sociedades, sino de donde también se derivan modelos rígidos y excluyentes, desde teorías basadas en la heteronormatividad y la segregación según el sexo, el género, la clase y la capacidad dentro de la diversidad funcional. La experiencia del espacio arquitectónico ha sido tradicionalmente descrita mediante palabras e imágenes: el lógos y el símbolo han sido los grandes intermediadores entre los sujetos y el habitar. Los ámbitos cotidiano y urbano se han regido por modelos y normas absolutas aplicadas universalmente y el mundo arquitectónico se ha visto estancado en la polaridad dual, entre lo público y lo privado, el dentro y el fuera, el movimiento y el reposo, el hombre y la mujer. Si el espacio-tiempo, el cuerpo y sus interpretaciones son la base para los modelos absolutistas, universalistas y perfeccionistas que han dominado el pensamiento occidental y elaborado la noción de lo “normal” en su totalidad, restando complejidad y diversidad, en la era hipermoderna ya no tiene sentido hablar en términos que no contemplen la superposición y la contradicción de la multiplicidad caótica en igualdad y en equilibrio instable. La realidad se ha visto reinventada a través de situaciones intermedias, los lugares inbetween en los espacios, tiempos, identidades y nociones presupuestas, donde se ha tergiversado el orden establecido, afectando al imaginario. La cotidianidad ha superado la arquitectura y el tiempo ha aniquilado el espacio. La conectividad, las redes y el libre acceso a la información – allá donde los haya – componen el marco que ha permitido a los sujetos subalternos emerger y empezar a consolidarse en el discurso teórico y práctico. Nuevos referentes están apareciendo en el hiper-espacio/tiempo aumentado, infringiendo todas aquellas leyes e interpretaciones impuestas para controlar los hábitos, las conductas y las personas. La casa, la ciudad y la metrópolis al vaciarse de contenidos, han dejado de cumplir funciones morales y simbólicas. Los no-lugares, los no-space, los no-time (Amann, 2011) son las condiciones radicalmente fenoménicas que reemplazan la realidad de lo vivido y activan de forma directa a los sentidos; son lugares que excitan el cuerpo como termótopos (Sloterdijk, 2002), que impulsan el crecimiento de la economía y en gran medida la multinormatividad. Sin duda alguna, aquí y ahora se requiere un nuevo modo de emplear la palabra, la imagen y la tecnología, dentro de una temporalidad efímera y eterna simultáneamente. ABSTRACT The term imaginary marks the beginning and the main topic of this research into the architectural world, presented as the necessary condition to understand the design process in its intimate layers, loaded with ideological and symbolic meanings. Through different interpretations, the unconscious, personal and collective, scientific or social, is found in the origin of every human thought and behaviour, constituting a closed chaotic universe, where all ideas are in constant tension and contradiction. This is why there are logical and coherent notions or discursive constructions which organise the context of verisimilitude and therefore the regime of reality through truth and its verification. For the architectural project, these specific configurations are associated with space, time and body as basic elements of management and hierarchization of human habitability and co-habitability. This thesis aims to demarcate and define a field of verisimilar processes installed in the imaginary, through the intangible heritage of mythical or utopian thinking, where not only enclosures of thought, iconography or utopian ideals are created, but from where rigid and exclusive models are derived as well, from theories based on heteronormativity and segregation by sex, gender, class and functional diversity. The experience of the architectural space has been described traditionally through words and images: the language and the symbol have been intermediating between the user and his habitat. Everyday life and urban interactions have been governed by absolute, universally applied, models or standards, therefore the architectural world has been stalled in a constant dual polarity between the public and the private, the inside and the outside, the movement and the repose, the man and the woman. Certainly, if the space-time notion, along with the theorization of the body, are the basis for absolutist, universalist and perfectionist models that have dominated western thought and developed the concept of “normal” in its totality, deducting all complexity and diversity, in the hypermodern era it makes no longer sense to speak in terms that ignore the overlap and contradiction of the chaotic multiplicity that characterises equality and unstable balance. Reality has been reinvented through intermediate situations, the in-between spaces, time, identities, or other presupposed notions. The order of truth has been distorted, affecting and transforming the contemporary imaginary. Everyday practices have surpassed the architectural design and time has annihilated space. Connectivity, networks, free access to information -wherever it exists-, compose the framework that has allowed subaltern subjectivity to emerge and begin to consolidate into main theoretical and practical discourses. New models are appearing in the augmented hyper-space/ time, transgressing any rule and interpretation imposed to control habits, behaviours and people. The house, the city and the metropolis are empty of content; they no longer fulfil moral and symbolic functions. The non-places, non-space, non-time (Amann, 2011) are radically phenomenal conditions that replace the reality of the lived experience and activate the senses as places that excite the body, thermotopos (Sloterdijk, 2002), which boost economic growth and to a considerable extent the multinormativity. Undoubtedly, what is required here and now is a new way of employing the word, the image and the technology within an ephemeral yet eternal temporality.

El principal objetivo de este trabajo es aportar conocimiento para contestar la pregunta: ¿hasta que punto los ensayos en túnel aerodinámico pueden contribuir a determinar las características que afectan la respuesta dinámica de los aerogeneradores operando en terreno complejo?. Esta pregunta no es nueva, de hecho, el debate en la comunidad científica comenzó en el primer tercio del siglo pasado y aún está intensamente vivo. El método generalmente aceptado para enfrentar el mencionado problema consiste en analizar un caso de estudio determinado en el cual se aplican tanto ensayos a escala real como análisis computacionales y ensayos en túnel aerodinámico. Esto no es ni fácil ni barato. Esta es la razón por la cual desde el experimento de Askervein en 1988, los modelizadores del flujo atmosférico tuvieron que esperar hasta 2007 a que el experimento de Bolund fuese puesto en marcha con un despliegue de medios técnicos equivalentes (teniendo en cuenta la evolución de las tecnologías de sensores y computación). El problema contempla tantos aspectos que ambas experiencias fueron restringidas a condiciones de atmósfera neutra con efectos de Coriolis despreciables con objeto de reducir la complejidad. Este es el contexto en el que se ha desarrollado la presente tesis doctoral. La topología del flujo sobre la isla de Bolund ha sido estudiada mediante la reproducción del experimento de Bolund en los túneles aerodinámicos A9 y ACLA16 del IDR. Dos modelos de la isla de Bolund fueron fabricados a dos escalas, 1:230 y 1:115. El flujo de entrada en el túnel aerodinámico simulando la capa límite sin perturbar correspondía a régimen de transición (transitionally rough regime) y fue usado como situación de referencia. El modelo a escala 1:230 fue ensayado en el túnel A9 para determinar la presión sobre su superficie. La distribución del coeficiente de presión sobre la isla proporcionó una visualización y estimación de una región de desprendimiento sobre el pequeño acantilado situado al frente de la misma. Las medidas de presión instantánea con suficiente grado de resolución temporal pusieron de manifiesto la no estacionariedad en la región de desprendimiento. El modelo a escala 1:115 fue ensayado utilizando hilo caliente de tres componentes y un sistema de velocimetría por imágenes de partículas de dos componentes. El flujo fue caracterizado por el ratio de aceleración, el incremento normalizado de energía cinética turbulenta y los ángulos de inclinación y desviación horizontal. Los resultados a lo largo de la dirección 270°y alturas de 2 m y 5 m presentaron una gran similitud con los resultados a escala real del experimento de Bolund. Los perfiles verticales en las localizaciones de las torres meteorológicas mostraron un acuerdo significativo con los resultados a escala real. El análisis de los esfuerzos de Reynolds y el análisis espectral en las localizaciones de los mástiles meteorológicos presentaron niveles de acuerdo variados en ciertas posiciones, mientras que en otras presentaron claras diferencias. El mapeo horizontal del flujo, para una dirección de viento de 270°, permitió caracterizar el comportamiento de la burbuja intermitente de recirculación sobre el pequeño acantilado existente al frente de la isla así como de la región de relajación y de la capa de cortadura en la región corriente abajo de Bolund. Se realizaron medidas de velocidad con alta resolución espacial en planos perpendiculares a la dirección del flujo sin perturbar. Estas medidas permitieron detectar y caracterizar una estructura de flujo similar a un torbellino longitudinal con regiones con altos gradientes de velocidad y alta intensidad de turbulencia. Esta estructura de flujo es, sin duda, un reto para los modelos computacionales y puede considerarse un factor de riesgo para la operación de los aerogeneradores. Se obtuvieron y analizaron distribuciones espaciales de los esfuerzos de Reynolds mediante 3CHW y PIV. Este tipo de parámetros no constituyen parte de los resultados habituales en los ensayos en túnel sobre topografías y son muy útiles para los modelizadores que utilizan simulación de grades torbellinos (LES). Se proporciona una interpretación de los resultados obtenidos en el túnel aerodinámico en términos de utilidad para los diseñadores de parques eólicos. La evolución y variación de los parámetros del flujo a lo largo de líneas, planos y superficies han permitido identificar como estas propiedades del flujo podrían afectar la localización de los aerogeneradores y a la clasificación de emplazamientos. Los resultados presentados sugieren, bajo ciertas condiciones, la robustez de los ensayos en túnel para estudiar la topología sobre terreno complejo y su comparabilidad con otras técnicas de simulación, especialmente considerando el nivel de acuerdo del conjunto de resultados presentados con los resultados a escala real. De forma adicional, algunos de los parámetros del flujo obtenidos de las medidas en túnel son difícilmente determinables en ensayos a escala real o por medios computacionales, considerado el estado del arte. Este trabajo fue realizado como parte de las actividades subvencionadas por la Comisión Europea como dentro del proyecto FP7-PEOPLE-ITN-2008WAUDIT (Wind Resource Assessment Audit and Standardization) dentro de la FP7 Marie-Curie Initial Training Network y por el Ministerio Español de Economía y Competitividad dentro del proyecto ENE2012-36473, TURCO (Determinación en túnel aerodinámico de la distribución espacial de parámetros estadísticos de la turbulencia atmosférica sobre topografías complejas) del Plan Nacional de Investigación (Subprograma de investigación fundamental no orientada 2012). El informe se ha organizado en siete capítulos y un conjunto de anexos. En el primer capítulo se introduce el problema. En el capítulo dos se describen los medios experimentales utilizados. Seguidamente, en el capítulo tres, se analizan en detalle las condiciones de referencia del principal túnel aerodinámico utilizado en esta investigación. En el capítulo tres se presentan resultados de ensayos de presión superficial sobre un modelo de la isla. Los principales resultados del experimento de Bolund se reproducen en el capítulo cinco. En el capítulo seis se identifican diferentes estructuras del flujo sobre la isla y, finalmente, en el capitulo siete, se recogen las conclusiones y una propuesta de lineas de trabajo futuras. ABSTRACT The main objective of this work is to contribute to answer the question: to which extend can the wind tunnel testing contribute to determine the flow characteristics that affect the dynamic response of wind turbines operating in highly complex terrains?. This question is not new, indeed, the debate in the scientific community was opened in the first third of the past century and it is still intensely alive. The accepted approach to face this problem consists in analysing a given case study where full-scale tests, computational modelling and wind tunnel testing are applied to the same topography. This is neither easy nor cheap. This is is the reason why since the Askervein experience in 1988, the atmospheric flow modellers community had to wait till 2007 when the Bolund experiment was setup with a deployment of technical means equivalent (considering the evolution of the sensor and computing techniques). The problem is so manifold that both experiences were restricted to neutral conditions without Coriolis effects in order to reduce the complexity. This is the framework in which this PhD has been carried out. The flow topology over the Bolund Island has been studied by replicating the Bolund experiment in the IDR A9 and ACLA16 wind tunnels. Two mock-ups of the Bolund island were manufactured at two scales of 1:230 and 1:115. The in-flow in the empty wind tunnel simulating the incoming atmospheric boundary layer was in the transitionally rough regime and used as a reference case. The 1:230 model was tested in the A9 wind tunnel to measure surface pressure. The mapping of the pressure coefficient across the island gave a visualisation and estimation of a detachment region on the top of the escarpment in front of the island. Time resolved instantaneous pressure measurements illustrated the non-steadiness in the detachment region. The 1:115 model was tested using 3C hot-wires(HW) and 2C Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). Measurements at met masts M3, M6, M7 and M8 and along Line 270°were taken to replicate the result of the Bolund experiment. The flow was characterised by the speed-up ratio, normalised increment of the turbulent kinetic energy, inclination angle and turning angle. Results along line 270°at heights of 2 m and 5 m compared very well with the full-scale results of the Bolund experiment. Vertical profiles at the met masts showed a significant agreement with the full-scale results. The analysis of the Reynolds stresses and the spectral analysis at the met mast locations gave a varied level of agreement at some locations while clear mismatch at others. The horizontal mapping of the flow field, for a 270°wind direction, allowed to characterise the behaviour of the intermittent recirculation bubble on top of the front escarpment followed by a relaxation region and the presence of a shear layer in the lee side of the island. Further detailed velocity measurements were taken at cross-flow planes over the island to study the flow structures on the island. A longitudinal vortex-like structure with high mean velocity gradients and high turbulent kinetic energy was characterised on the escarpment and evolving downstream. This flow structure is a challenge to the numerical models while posing a threat to wind farm designers when siting wind turbines. Spatial distribution of Reynold stresses were presented from 3C HW and PIV measurements. These values are not common results from usual wind tunnel measurements and very useful for modellers using large eddy simulation (LES). An interpretation of the wind tunnel results in terms of usefulness to wind farm designers is given. Evolution and variation of the flow parameters along measurement lines, planes and surfaces indicated how the flow field could affect wind turbine siting. Different flow properties were presented so compare the level of agreement to full-scale results and how this affected when characterising the site wind classes. The results presented suggest, under certain conditions, the robustness of the wind tunnel testing for studying flow topology over complex terrain and its capability to compare to other modelling techniques especially from the level of agreement between the different data sets presented. Additionally, some flow parameters obtained from wind tunnel measurements would have been quite difficult to be measured at full-scale or by computational means considering the state of the art. Following, in chapter three, the inflow conditions of the main wind tunnel used in this piece of research are analysed in detail. In chapter three, preliminary pressure tests results on a model of the island are presented. The main results from the Bolund experiment are replicated in chapter five. In chapter six, an identification of specific flow strutures over the island is presented and, finally, in chapter seven, conclusions and lines for future works related to the presented one are included.
