ABSTRACT. In this research work, the presence of Fencing as an educational subject within different formal educational Institutions in Madrid, over a period of 225 years (1725-1950), has been analysed. In order to carry out this research, a work schedule was drawn up, based on the methods of the historical research, historiography. The search for the information was primarily carried out in the Archivo Historico Nacional, the Archivo General de la Administración, the Archivo Regional of Madrid, the Archivo General de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Archivo del Real Conservatorio Superior de Música of Madrid, the Archivo General de Palacio, the Archivo de la Villa and the Biblioteca Nacional. The research presented covers five educational Institutions, where the presence of Fencing as a formal education is studied. These Institutions are: the Real Seminario de Nobles de Madrid, the Escuela Central de Profesores y Profesoras de Gimnástica, the Real Conservatorio de Música y Declamación and the Cardenal Cisneros and the San Isidro Secondary Schools. The different Academic formation, Syllabuses, Temporary working Regulations, founding Law, books, subject Plans and all the documents, official or internal, of each of the Centres dealt with, were analysed. Moreover, the roles of the Masters in charge of teaching Fencing as a formal subject in different Institutions were studied, and Mr. Manuel Antonio de Brea, Mr. Francisco de la Macorra y Guijeño, Mr. Ángel Lancho Martín de la Fuente, Mr. Afrodisio Aparicio Aparicio and Mr. José Carbonell were the most prominent. The conclusion of the research carried out, is that the presence of Fencing is a subject perfectly organised in each one of the Institutions analysed, as well as the importance that the role of the Fencing Master reached in every Institution, in some cases being “Maestro Mayor del Reyno” and in others becoming Fencing Professors, while all of them had a qualification that enabled them to practice their profession. Similarly, we can find the presence of women in one of the Institutions, the Real Conservatorio de Música y Declamación, where they had the same rights as her male classmates to enrol and study Fencing. The Fencing Masters who were studied, principally Mr. Ángel Lancho, Mr. Afrodisio Aparicio and Mr. José Carbonell, all contributed to making Fencing popular and also towards its development as a sport, by organising tournaments for their students and by competing themselves in a number of assaults. Over the 225 years which the research covers, Fencing evolved from Skill to Ability and later on to a Sport, without, at any moment, losing its importance, spreading to parts of society that it would never have reached if it were not for the work of the Fencing Masters in charge of teaching it.

ABSTRACT Corporal Expression as an educational subject has it origin s in Spain, linked to physical education and its development at University context, during the second half of the twentieth century. But his academic corpus has not been definitively settled, leading to different interpretations and considerations about what should be considered as proper contents of subject and how they should be structured. This thesis aims to study precisely the contents of the Corporal Expression as a subject belonging to Sciences of Physical Activity and Sport, trying to give a reasoned response to the previous approach. Taking this objective into consideration, main reference works were selected and analyzed to set a content structure and associated categories. The training offer of Spanish public universities in the Science of Physical Activity and Sport degree was analyzed, checking on the one hand the heterogeneity in the treatment and on the other their suitability to the structure generated. Thirdly, normative related to the treatment of Corporal Expression in the Ley Orgánica de Educación was examined paying special attention to the Secondary School stage. The process of triangulation which was performed using the most influential documentary sources suggested an apparent lack of structure and approach in the selection of contents to be developed in the subject of Physical Education. Based on these investigations, on the own teaching experience of the candidate and on the contribution of various experts in the field, a structured proposal of Corporal Expression contents is offered. This proposal has been implemented in the bachelor's degree in Sports Science offered by the Technical University of Madrid. Level of importance of the implemented contents perceived by students was analyzed and results suggested the presence of meaningful learning among graduates. Research was split into five phases. In the first three phases content analysis of the main documentary sources (reference books, university programs and educational standards), which was supported by other tools like the discussion group was the principal methodology. The fourth phase consisted in the development of a proposal structured content, involving the assessment of a group of experts in the field. In the implementation and evaluation phase collective interview using self-completed questionnaire was conducted The main contribution of this work is therefore presenting a proposal for structuring content in Corporal Expression, as a part of the basic manifestations of human motorskill and framed in the field of Sciences of Physical Activity and Sport; which draws on the support of reference works, initial training of graduates in Science of Physical Activity and Sport and the development of the normative of the Ley Orgánica de Educación; and has been implemented in the current Degree in Sports Science of the Technical University of Madrid with satisfactory results.

The adaptation to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) is becoming a great challenge for the University Community, especially for its teaching and research staff, which is involved actively in the teaching-learning process. It is also inducing a paradigm change for lecturers and students. Among the methodologies used for processes of teaching innovation, system thinking plays an important role when working mainly with mind maps, and is focused to highlighting the essence of the knowledge, allowing its visual representation. In this paper, a method for using these mind maps for organizing a particular subject is explained. This organization is completed with the definition of duration, precedence relationships and resources for each of these activities, as well as with their corresponding monitoring. Mind maps are generated by means of the MINDMANAGER package whilst Ms-PROJECT is used for establishing tasks relationships, durations, resources, and monitoring. Summarizing, a procedure and the necessary set of applications for self organizing and managing (timed) scheduled teaching tasks has been described in this paper.

This paper describes the design and evaluation of a new platform created in order to improve the learning experience of bilateral control algorithms in teleoperation. This experimental platform, developed at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, is used by the students of the Master on Automation and Robotics in the practices of the subject called “Telerobotics and Teleoperation”. The main objective is to easily implement different control architectures in the developed platform and evaluate them under different conditions to better understand the main advantages and drawbacks of each control scheme. So, the student’s tasks are focused on adjusting the control parameters of the predefined controllers and designing new ones to analyze the changes in the behavior of the whole system. A description of the subject, main topics and the platform constructed are detailed in the paper. Furthermore, the methodology followed in the practices and the bilateral control algorithms are presented. Finally, the results obtained in the experiments with students are also shown.

Electric vehicles constitute a multidisciplinary subject that involves disciplines such as automotive, mechanical, electrical and control engineering. Due to this multidisciplinary technical nature, practical teaching methodologies are of special relevance. Paradoxically, in the past, the training of engineers specializing in this area has lacked the practical component represented by field tests, due to the difficulty of accessing real systems. This paper presents an educational project specifically designed for the teaching and training of engineering students with different backgrounds and experience. The teaching methodology focuses on the topology of electric traction drives and their control. It includes two stages, a simulation computer model and a scaled laboratory workbench that comprises a traction electrical drive coupled to a vehicle emulator. With this equipment, the effectiveness of different traction control strategies can be analyzed from the point of view of energy efficiency, robustness, easiness of implementation and acoustic noise.
