We study a climatologically important interaction of two of the main components of the geophysical system by adding an energy balance model for the averaged atmospheric temperature as dynamic boundary condition to a diagnostic ocean model having an additional spatial dimension. In this work, we give deeper insight than previous papers in the literature, mainly with respect to the 1990 pioneering model by Watts and Morantine. We are taking into consideration the latent heat for the two phase ocean as well as a possible delayed term. Non-uniqueness for the initial boundary value problem, uniqueness under a non-degeneracy condition and the existence of multiple stationary solutions are proved here. These multiplicity results suggest that an S-shaped bifurcation diagram should be expected to occur in this class of models generalizing previous energy balance models. The numerical method applied to the model is based on a finite volume scheme with nonlinear weighted essentially non-oscillatory reconstruction and Runge–Kutta total variation diminishing for time integration.

Pb17Li is today a reference breeder material in diverse fusion R&D programs worldwide. Extracting dynamic and structural properties of liquid LiPb mixtures via molecular dynamics simulations, represent a crucial step for multiscale modeling efforts in order to understand the suitability of this compound for future Nuclear Fusion technologies. At present a Li-Pb cross potential is not available in the literature. Here we present our first results on the validation of two semi-empirical potentials for Li and Pb in liquid phase. Our results represent the establishment of a solid base as a previous but crucial step to implement a LiPb cross potential. Structural and thermodynamical analyses confirm that the implemented potentials for Li and Pb are realistic to simulate both elements in the liquid phase.

BIOLOGY is a dynamic and fascinating science. The study of this subject is an amazing trip for all the students that have a first contact with this subject. Here, we present the development of the study and learning experience of this subject belonging to an area of knowledge that is different to the training curriculum of students who have studied Physics during their degree period. We have taken a real example, the “Elements of Biology” subject, which is taught as part of the Official Biomedical Physics Master, at the Physics Faculty, of the Complutense University of Madrid, since the course 2006/07. Its main objective is to give to the student an understanding how the Physics can have numerous applications in the Biomedical Sciences area, giving the basic training to develop a professional, academic or research career. The results obtained when we use new virtual tools combined with the classical learning show that there is a clear increase in the number of persons that take and pass the final exam. On the other hand, this new learning strategy is well received by the students and this is translated to a higher participation and a decrease of the giving the subject up

The fragmented condition of our everyday brings us closer to the risks of hyper-expression. Against it two positions unfold to help us face a world that escapes our capacities: familiarity and poetic recognition. In the latter it is crucial the role of the insignificant as dynamic and relational instigator of a conscious threading of reality through the actions of the Poeta Faber and his careful look onto the world. / The production of the common as the material and symbolic fabric of the city, unstable reality in a perpetual becoming, leads us to a new and much needed reconsideration of the public/private division born from the modern state. Immersed in the confusion between public and common, we have not perceived that through the expropriation of the first we have been prepared for the willing surrendering of the second. / From insignificance to rebellion as affirmative going into action related to the idea of minor architecture as common and intensely political production, born from the inside of a society that has no more outsides.

The challenge to properly feed a world population of 9.2 billion by 2050, that must be achieved on essentially currently cropped area, requires that food production be increased by 70%. This large increase can only be achieved by combinations of greater crop yields and more intensive cropping adapted to local conditions and availability of inputs. Farming systems are dynamic and continuously adapt to changing ecological, environmental and social conditions, while achieving greater production and resource-use efficiency by application of science and technology. This article argues that the solution to feed and green the world in 2050 is to support this evolution more strongly by providing farmers with necessary information, inputs, and recognition. There is no revolutionary alternative. Proposals to transform agriculture to low-input and organic systems would, because of low productiv- ity, exacerbate the challenge if applied in small part, and ensure failure if applied more widely. The challenge is, however, great. Irrigation, necessary to increase cropping intensity in many areas cannot be extended much more widely than at present, and it is uncertain if the current rate of crop yield increase can be maintained. Society needs greater recognition of the food-supply problem and must increase funding and support for agricultural research while it attends to issues of food waste and over consumption that can make valuable reductions to food demand from agriculture

In pressure irrigation-water distribution networks, pressure regulating devices for controlling the discharged flow rate by irrigation units are needed due to the variability of flow rate. In addition, applied water volume is used controlled operating the valve during a calculated time interval, and assuming constant flow rate. In general, a pressure regulating valve PRV is the commonly used pressure regulating device in a hydrant, which, also, executes the open and close function. A hydrant feeds several irrigation units, requiring a wide range in flow rate. In addition, some flow meters are also available, one as a component of the hydrant and the rest are placed downstream. Every land owner has one flow meter for each group of field plots downstream the hydrant. Its lecture could be used for refining the water balance but its accuracy must be taken into account. Ideal PRV performance would maintain a constant downstream pressure. However, the true performance depends on both upstream pressure and the discharged flow rate. The objective of this work is to asses the influence of the performance on the applied volume during the whole irrigation events in a year. The results of the study have been obtained introducing the flow rate into a PRV model. Variations on flow rate are simulated by taking into account the consequences of variations on climate conditions and also decisions in irrigation operation, such us duration and frequency application. The model comprises continuity, dynamic and energy equations of the components of the PRV.

The presented work aims to contribute towards the standardization and the interoperability off the Future Internet through an open and scalable architecture design. We present S³OiA as a syntactic/semantic Service-Oriented Architecture that allows the integration of any type of object or device, not mattering their nature, on the Internet of Things. Moreover, the architecture makes possible the use of underlying heterogeneous resources as a substrate for the automatic composition of complex applications through a semantic Triple Space paradigm. Created applications are dynamic and adaptive since they are able to evolve depending on the context where they are executed. The validation scenario of this architecture encompasses areas which are prone to involve human beings in order to promote personal autonomy, such as home-care automation environments and Ambient Assisted Living.

Sustainability is an adjective used to characterize agriculture according to the degree of fulfillment of goals. Those goals are related to agro-ecological, environmental and socio-economic dimensions. Sustainability is a dynamic and temporal character. In absolute terms there is not an ending value because it changes as its dimensions make it. Spain is one of the main agricultural countries of the European Union both in terms of crop land and value of productions. The object of this study is to present a methodology of sustainability account to be incorporated into national statistical and to assess their performance in the course of the years. For that reason the data sources used have been the statistics of the Department of Agriculture and from others database. We presented a set of indicators of sustainability and its evaluation in a time series of at least 30 years. The trend analysis offers the evolution of the numerical values of the indicators in terms of efficiency, physical units used for a unit of product or its value in euros. The analyzed crops have been: wheat, barley, maize, sunflower, sugar beet, wine grape, olive oil, citrus, melon and tomato. Physical indicators were: land, water, energy, erosion, soil organic matter, and carbon balance; socio-economic indicators were: agricultural final production, prices, income, employment and use of fertilizers. In general, all crops increased their productive efficiency, higher in irrigated than on dry land. Spanish agricultural carbon sequestration capacity has multiplied by five in the last seventy years, as a result of the increase in the productivity of crops, in terms of total biomass and the modification of the soil management techniques. Livestock sector presents data of pork, broilers and laying hen. Those showed an improvement in efficiency and economic indicators. Overall we can say that Spanish agriculture and livestock subsector have a tendency towards sustainability, being its main threats extreme meteorological factors and the instability of todays markets.

As embedded systems evolve, problems inherent to technology become important limitations. In less than ten years, chips will exceed the maximum allowed power consumption affecting performance, since, even though the resources available per chip are increasing, frequency of operation has stalled. Besides, as the level of integration is increased, it is difficult to keep defect density under control, so new fault tolerant techniques are required. In this demo work, a new dynamically adaptable virtual architecture (ARTICo3) to allow dynamic and context-aware use of resources is implemented in a high performance Wireless Sensor node (HiReCookie) to perform an image processing application.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) nanocomposites containing environmentally-friendly tungsten disulphide inorganic nanotubes (INTeWS2) have been successfully prepared by a simple solution blending method. The dynamic and isothermal crystallization studies by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that the INTeWS2 exhibits much more prominent nucleation activity on the crystallization of PHB than specific nucleating agents or other nanoscale fillers. Both crystallization rate and crystallinity significantly increase in the nanocomposites compared to neat PHB. These changes occur without modifying the crystalline structure of PHB in the nanocomposites, as shown by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXS) and infrared/Raman spectroscopy. Other parameters such as the Avrami exponent, the equilibrium melting temperature, global rate constant and the fold surface free energy of PHB chains in the nanocomposites were obtained from the calorimetric data in order to determine the influence of the INTeWS2 filler. The addition of INTeWS2 remarkably influences the energetics and kinetics of nucleation and growth of PHB, reducing the fold surface free energy by up to 20%. Furthermore, these nanocomposites also show an improvement in both tribological and mechanical (hardness and modulus) properties with respect to pure PHB evidenced by friction and nanoindentation tests, which is of important potential interest for industrial and medical applications.

ABSTRACT The last decade has witnessed major advances in speech recognition technology. Today’s commercial systems are able to recognize continuous speech from numerous speakers, with acceptable levels of error and without the need for an explicit adaptation procedure. Despite this progress, speech recognition is far from being a solved problem. Most of these systems are adjusted to a particular domain and their efficacy depends significantly, among many other aspects, on the similarity between the language model used and the task that is being addressed. This dependence is even more important in scenarios where the statistical properties of the language fluctuates throughout the time, for example, in application domains involving spontaneous and multitopic speech. Over the last years there has been an increasing effort in enhancing the speech recognition systems for such domains. This has been done, among other approaches, by means of techniques of automatic adaptation. These techniques are applied to the existing systems, specially since exporting the system to a new task or domain may be both time-consuming and expensive. Adaptation techniques require additional sources of information, and the spoken language could provide some of them. It must be considered that speech not only conveys a message, it also provides information on the context in which the spoken communication takes place (e.g. on the subject on which it is being talked about). Therefore, when we communicate through speech, it could be feasible to identify the elements of the language that characterize the context, and at the same time, to track the changes that occur in those elements over time. This information can be extracted and exploited through techniques of information retrieval and machine learning. This allows us, within the development of more robust speech recognition systems, to enhance the adaptation of language models to the conditions of the context, thus strengthening the recognition system for domains under changing conditions (such as potential variations in vocabulary, style and topic). In this sense, the main contribution of this Thesis is the proposal and evaluation of a framework of topic-motivated contextualization based on the dynamic and non-supervised adaptation of language models for the enhancement of an automatic speech recognition system. This adaptation is based on an combined approach (from the perspective of both information retrieval and machine learning fields) whereby we identify the topics that are being discussed in an audio recording. The topic identification, therefore, enables the system to perform an adaptation of the language model according to the contextual conditions. The proposed framework can be divided in two major systems: a topic identification system and a dynamic language model adaptation system. This Thesis can be outlined from the perspective of the particular contributions made in each of the fields that composes the proposed framework: _ Regarding the topic identification system, we have focused on the enhancement of the document preprocessing techniques in addition to contributing in the definition of more robust criteria for the selection of index-terms. – Within both information retrieval and machine learning based approaches, the efficiency of topic identification systems, depends, to a large extent, on the mechanisms of preprocessing applied to the documents. Among the many operations that encloses the preprocessing procedures, an adequate selection of index-terms is critical to establish conceptual and semantic relationships between terms and documents. This process might also be weakened by a poor choice of stopwords or lack of precision in defining stemming rules. In this regard we compare and evaluate different criteria for preprocessing the documents, as well as for improving the selection of the index-terms. This allows us to not only reduce the size of the indexing structure but also to strengthen the topic identification process. – One of the most crucial aspects, in relation to the performance of topic identification systems, is to assign different weights to different terms depending on their contribution to the content of the document. In this sense we evaluate and propose alternative approaches to traditional weighting schemes (such as tf-idf ) that allow us to improve the specificity of terms, and to better identify the topics that are related to documents. _ Regarding the dynamic language model adaptation, we divide the contextualization process into different steps. – We propose supervised and unsupervised approaches for the generation of topic-based language models. The first of them is intended to generate topic-based language models by grouping the documents, in the training set, according to the original topic labels of the corpus. Nevertheless, a goal of this Thesis is to evaluate whether or not the use of these labels to generate language models is optimal in terms of recognition accuracy. For this reason, we propose a second approach, an unsupervised one, in which the objective is to group the data in the training set into automatic topic clusters based on the semantic similarity between the documents. By means of clustering approaches we expect to obtain a more cohesive association of the documents that are related by similar concepts, thus improving the coverage of the topic-based language models and enhancing the performance of the recognition system. – We develop various strategies in order to create a context-dependent language model. Our aim is that this model reflects the semantic context of the current utterance, i.e. the most relevant topics that are being discussed. This model is generated by means of a linear interpolation between the topic-based language models related to the most relevant topics. The estimation of the interpolation weights is based mainly on the outcome of the topic identification process. – Finally, we propose a methodology for the dynamic adaptation of a background language model. The adaptation process takes into account the context-dependent model as well as the information provided by the topic identification process. The scheme used for the adaptation is a linear interpolation between the background model and the context-dependent one. We also study different approaches to determine the interpolation weights used in this adaptation scheme. Once we defined the basis of our topic-motivated contextualization framework, we propose its application into an automatic speech recognition system. We focus on two aspects: the contextualization of the language models used by the system, and the incorporation of semantic-related information into a topic-based adaptation process. To achieve this, we propose an experimental framework based in ‘a two stages’ recognition architecture. In the first stage of the architecture, Information Retrieval and Machine Learning techniques are used to identify the topics in a transcription of an audio segment. This transcription is generated by the recognition system using a background language model. According to the confidence on the topics that have been identified, the dynamic language model adaptation is carried out. In the second stage of the recognition architecture, an adapted language model is used to re-decode the utterance. To test the benefits of the proposed framework, we carry out the evaluation of each of the major systems aforementioned. The evaluation is conducted on speeches of political domain using the EPPS (European Parliamentary Plenary Sessions) database from the European TC-STAR project. We analyse several performance metrics that allow us to compare the improvements of the proposed systems against the baseline ones.

ABSTRACT Future missions for air to air endo-atmospheric missiles require the interception of targets with higher speeds and more maneuverable, including forthcoming unmanned supersonic combat vehicles. The interception will need to be achieved from any angle and off-boresight launch conditions. One of the most significant discussions in missile technology today is how to satisfy these new operational requirements by increasing missile maneuvering capabilities and in parallel, through the development of more advanced guidance and control methods. This Thesis addresses these two objectives by proposing a novel optimal integrated guidance and autopilot design scheme, applicable to more maneuverable missiles with forward and rearward aerodynamic controls. A first insight of these results have been recently published in the Journal of Aerospace Engineering in April 2015, [Ibarrondo and Sanz-Aránguez, 2015]. The value of this integrated solution is that it allows the missile to comply with the aforementioned requirements only by applying aerodynamic control. The proposed design is compared against more traditional guidance and control approaches with positive results, achieving reduced control efforts and lower miss distances with the integrated logic even in the presence of noises. In this Thesis it will be demonstrated how the dual control missile, where canard and tail fins are both movable, can enhance the capabilities of an existing missile airframe. Compared to a tail missile, dual control only requires two additional servos to actuate the canards in pitch and yaw. The tail section will be responsible to maintain the missile stabilized in roll, like in a classic tail missile. The additional complexity is that the vortices shed from the canard propagate downstream where they interact with the tail surfaces, altering the tail expected control characteristics. These aerodynamic phenomena must be properly described, as a preliminary step, with high enough precision for advanced guidance and control studies. As a first contribution we have developed a full analytical model of the nonlinear aerodynamics of a missile with dual control, including the characterization of this cross-control coupling effect. This development has been produced from a theoretical model validated with reliable practical data obtained from wind tunnel experiments available in the scientific literature, complement with computer fluid dynamics and semi-experimental methods. There are two modes of operating a missile with forward and rear controls, ”divert” and ”opposite” modes. In divert mode, controls are deflected in the same direction, generating an increment in direct lift and missile translation. Response is fast, but in this mode, dual control missiles may have difficulties in achieving large angles of attack and high level of lateral accelerations. When controls are deflected in opposite directions (opposite mode) the missile airframe rotates and the body angle of attack is increased to generate greater accelerations in steady-state, although the response time is larger. With the aero-model, a state dependent parametrization of the dual control missile short term dynamics can be obtained. Due to the cross-coupling effect, the open loop dynamics for the dual control missile is not linearly dependent of the fin positions. The short term missile dynamics are blended with the servo system to obtain an extended autopilot model, where the response is linear with the control fins turning rates, that will be the control variables. The flight control loop is optimized to achieve the maneuver required by the guidance law without exceeding any of the missile aerodynamic or mechanical limitations. The specific aero-limitations and relevant performance indicators for the dual control are set as part of the analysis. A second contribution of this Thesis is the development of a step-tracking multi-input autopilot that integrates non-linear aerodynamics. The designed dual control missile autopilot is a full three dimensional autopilot, where roll, pitch and yaw are integrated, calculating command inputs simultaneously. The autopilot control gains are state dependent, and calculated at each integration step solving a matrix Riccati equation of order 21x21. The resulting gains are sub-optimal as a full solution for the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation cannot be resolved in practical terms and some simplifications are taken. Acceleration mechanisms with an λ-shift is incorporated in the design. As part of the autopilot, a strategy is defined for proper allocation of control effort between canard and tail channels. This is achieved with an augmented feed forward controller that minimizes the total control effort of the missile to maneuver. The feedforward law also maintains the missile near trim conditions, obtaining a well manner response of the missile. The nonlinear controller proves to eliminate the non-minimum phase effect of the tail. Two guidance and control designs have been considered in this Thesis: the Two- Loop and the Integrated approaches. In the Two-Loop approach, the autopilot is placed in an inner loop and designed separately from an outer guidance loop. This structure assumes that spectral separation holds, meaning that the autopilot response times are much higher than the guidance command updates. The developed nonlinear autopilot is linked in the study to an optimal guidance law. Simulations are carried on launching close to collision course against supersonic and highly maneuver targets. Results demonstrate a large boost in performance provided by the dual control versus more traditional canard and tail missiles, where interception with the dual control close to collision course is achieved form 365deg all around the target. It is shown that for the dual control missile the optimal flight strategy results in using opposite control in its approach to target and quick corrections with divert just before impact. However the Two-Loop logic fails to achieve target interception when there are large deviations initially from collision course. One of the reasons is that part of the guidance command is not followed, because the missile is not able to control its axial acceleration without a throttleable engine. Also the separation hypothesis may not be applicable for a high dynamic vehicle like a dual control missile approaching a maneuvering target. If the guidance and autopilot are combined into a single loop, the guidance law will have information of the missile states and could calculate the most optimal approach to the target considering the actual capabilities and attitude of the missile. A third contribution of this Thesis is the resolution of the mentioned second design, the non-linear integrated guidance and autopilot (IGA) problem for the dual control missile. Previous approaches in the literature have posed the problem in body axes, resulting in high unstable behavior due to the low damping of the missile, and have also caused the missile to slide around the target and not actually hitting it. The IGA system is posed here in inertial axes and quaternion dynamics, eliminating these inconveniences. It is not restricted to the missile short term dynamic, and we have explicitly included the missile speed as a state variable. The IGA formulation is also independent of the target maneuver model that is explicitly included in the Two-loop optimal guidance law model. A typical problem of the integrated systems with a proportional control law is the problem of scales. The guidance errors are larger than missile state errors during most of the flight and result in high gains, control saturation and loss of control. It has been addressed here with an integrated feedforward controller that defines a local equilibrium state at each flight point and the controller acts as a regulator to minimize the IGA states excursions versus the defined feedforward state. The performance criteria for the IGA are the same as in the Two-Loop case. However the resulting optimization problem is mathematically very complex. The optimal problem in a finite-time horizon results in an irresoluble state dependent differential Riccati equation with terminal conditions. With a change of variable and the introduction of a transition matrix, the equation is transformed into a time differential Lyapunov equation that can be solved with known numerical methods in real time. This solution results range limited, and applicable when the missile is in a close neighborhood of the target. For larger ranges, an approximate solution is used, obtained from solution of an algebraic matrix Riccati equation at each integration step. The results obtained show, by mean of several comparative numerical tests in diverse homing scenarios, than the integrated approach is a better solution that the Two- Loop scheme. Trajectories obtained are very different in the two cases. The IGA fully preserves the guidance command and it is able to maximize the utilization of the missile propulsion system, achieving interception with lower miss distances and in lower flight times. The IGA can achieve interception against off-boresight targets where the Two- Loop was not able to success. As an additional advantage, the IGA also requires one order of magnitude less calculations than the Two-Loop solution. The effects of radar noises, discrete radar data and radome errors are investigated. IGA solution is robust, and less affected by radar than the Two-Loop, especially because the target maneuvers are not part of the IGA core optimization loop. Estimation of target acceleration is always imprecise and noisy and degrade the performance of the two-Loop solution. The IGA trajectories are such that minimize the impact of radome errors in the guidance loop. Finally, as a fourth contribution, it is demonstrated that the missile with IGA guidance is capable of performing a defense against attacks from its rear hemisphere, as a tail attack, only with aerodynamic control. The studied trajectories have a preprogrammed high rate turn maneuver, maintaining the missile within its controllable envelope. This solution does not recur to more complex features in service today, like vector control of the missile thrust or side thrusters. In all the mathematical treatments and demonstrations, the Kronecker product has been introduced as a practical tool to handle the state dependent parametrizations that have resulted in very high order matrix equations.

ABSTRACT The traditional architectural design and construction procedures have proven to be deficient where process optimization is concerned, particularly when compared to other common industrial activities. The ever‐growing strife to achieve effective industrialization, both in favor of reaching greater quality levels as well as sustainable management of resources, has a better chance today than ever through a mean out of the realm of information technology, the Building Information Modelling o BIM. What may initially seem to be merely another computer program, in reality turns out to be a “process” concept that subverts many of today’s routines in architectural design and construction. Including and working with project data from the very beginning to the end of its full life cycle allows for creating a dynamic and updatable virtual reality, enabling data testing and optimizing throughout: before and during execution, all the way to the end of its lifespan. In addition, there is an opportunity to transmit complete project data efficiently, with hardly any loss or redeveloping of the manufacture chain required, which facilitates attaining a truly significant industrialization within the construction industry. In the presence of a world‐wide call for optimizing resources, along with an undeniable interest in increasing economic benefits through reducing uncertainty factors in its processes, BIM undoubtedly offers a chance for improvement as acknowledged by its imminent and mandatory implementation on the part of governments (for example United Kingdom in 2016 and Spain in 2018). The changes involved in professional roles and procedures upon incorporating BIM are highly significant and will set the course for future graduates of Architecture, Engineering and Construction disciplines (AEC) within their professions. Higher Education must respond to such needs with swiftness by incorporating this methodology into their educational standards and providing a synergetic vision that focuses on the underlying educational benefits inherent in the BIM framework. In this respect, BIM, in gathering data set under one single virtual model, offers a uniquely interesting potential. The three‐dimensional reality of the model, under continuous development and updating, provides students with a radically different graphic environment, in which partial views of elevation, section or plan that tend characteristically to be difficult to assimilate at the beginning of their studies, become mere post hoc requests to be ordered when needed directly out the virtual model. The design is always carried out on the sole model itself, independently of the working view chosen at any particular moment, with all data and data relations within construction permanently updated and fully coherent. This condensed description of the features of BIM begin to shape an important part of the educational benefits posed by BIM processes, particularly in reference to integrated design development and information management (including ITC). At the same time, it highlights the ease with which visual understanding is achieved regarding architectural elements, technology systems, their intrinsic relationships, and construction processes. In addition to this, there is the experimental development the BIM platform grants through its collaborative software: simulation of structural, energetic, and economic behavior, among others, of the virtual model according to the data inherent to the project. This doctoral dissertation presents a broad study including a wide array of research methods and issues in order to specify both the virtues and possible reservations in the use of BIM processes within the framework of a specific discipline: teaching Architecture. To do so, a literature review on BIM has been carried out, specifically concerning teaching in the discipline of Architecture, as well as an analysis of the experience of different groups of interest delimited to Universidad Europea de Madrid. The analysis of the benefits and/or limitations of using BIM has been approached through student surveys and interviews with professionals from the AEC sector, associated or not, with BIM. Various diverse educational experiences are described and academic management for experimental implementation has been analyzed. The conclusions of this study offer a synthesis for a Framework of Implementation of BIM methodology, which in order to reach greater clarity, communication ease and user‐friendliness, have been posed in an eminently graphic manner. The proposed framework proffers guidance on teaching methods conducive to the development of specific skills, taking advantage of the conceptual flexibility of the European Higher Education Area guidelines based on competencies, which naturally facilitate for the incorporation of this new teaching tool to achieve the educational objectives established by law. The global approach of the Implementation Framework put forth in this study facilitates the planning of educational actions within a common perspective: combining exceptional or vehicular BIM formats, establishing cross‐disciplinary synergies, and sharing resources, so as to purport a methodology that contributes to the assimilation of knowledge and pre‐defined competencies within the degree program, and to the flow of learning itself. At the same time, it reserves, even visually, those areas of knowledge in which the use of BIM processes is not considered necessarily an advantage over other methodologies, or even inadequate for the learning outcomes established, at least where current planning is concerned. It is this last category which characterizes the research conclusions as a whole, centering on: 1. The unquestionable need for teaching BIM concepts and processes in Architecture very early on, in the initial stages of higher education; 2. The additional educational benefits that BIM offers in a varied array of competency development within the academic curriculum; and 3. The specific nature of the professional role of the Architect, which demands a careful and balanced implementation of BIM that respects the traditional teaching methodologies that have proven effective and creative, and adds value by a symbiotic reorientation merged with parametric design and digital manufacturing so to enable for a finally generative design.
