Nitrogen (N) is an important nutrient for melon (Cucumis melo L.) production. However there is scanty information about the amount necessary to maintain an appropriate balance between growth and yield. Melon vegetative organs must develop sufficiently to intercept light and accumulate water and nutrients but it is also important to obtain a large reproductive-vegetative dry weight ratio to maximize the fruit yield. We evaluated the influence of different N amounts on the growth, production of dry matter and fruit yield of a melon ‘Piel de sapo’ type. A three-year field experiment was carried out from May to September. Melons were subjected to an irrigation depth of 100% crop evapotranspiration and to 11 N fertilization rates, ranging 11 to 393 kg ha –1 in the three years. The dry matter production of leaves and stems increased as the N amount increased. The dry matter of the whole plant was affected similarly, while the fruit dry matter decreased as the N amount was increased above 112, 93 and 95 kg ha –1 , in 2005, 2006 and 2007, respectively. The maximum Leaf Area Index (LAI), 3.1, was obtained at 393 kg ha –1 of N. The lowest N supply reduced the fruit yield by 21%, while the highest increased the vegetative growth, LAI and Leaf Area Duration (LAD), but reduced yield by 24% relative to the N93 treatment. Excessive applications of N increase vegetative growth at the expense of reproductive growth. For this melon type, rates about 90-100 kg ha –1 of N are sufficient for adequate plant growth, development and maximum production. To obtain fruit yield close to the maximum, the leaf N concentration at the end of the crop cycle should be higher than 19.5 g kg –1

All crop models, whether site-specific or global-gridded and regardless of crop, simulate daily crop transpiration and soil evaporation during the crop life cycle, resulting in seasonal crop water use. Modelers use several methods for predicting daily potential evapotranspiration (ET), including FAO-56, Penman-Monteith, Priestley-Taylor, Hargreaves, full energy balance, and transpiration water efficiency. They use extinction equations to partition energy to soil evaporation or transpiration, depending on leaf area index. Most models simulate soil water balance and soil-root water supply for transpiration, and limit transpiration if water uptake is insufficient, and thereafter reduce dry matter production. Comparisons among multiple crop and global gridded models in the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) show surprisingly large differences in simulated ET and crop water use for the same climatic conditions. Model intercomparisons alone are not enough to know which approaches are correct. There is an urgent need to test these models against field-observed data on ET and crop water use. It is important to test various ET modules/equations in a model platform where other aspects such as soil water balance and rooting are held constant, to avoid compensation caused by other parts of models. The CSM-CROPGRO model in DSSAT already has ET equations for Priestley-Taylor, Penman-FAO-24, Penman-Monteith-FAO-56, and an hourly energy balance approach. In this work, we added transpiration-efficiency modules to DSSAT and AgMaize models and tested the various ET equations against available data on ET, soil water balance, and season-long crop water use of soybean, fababean, maize, and other crops where runoff and deep percolation were known or zero. The different ET modules created considerable differences in predicted ET, growth, and yield.

The use of residual biomass for energy purposes is of great interest in isolated areas like Majorca for waste reduction, energy sufficiency and renewable energies development. In addition, densification processes lead to easy-to-automate solid biofuels which additionally have higher energy density. The present study aims at (i) the estimation of the potential of residual biomass from woody crops as well as from agri-food and wood industries in Majorca, and (ii) the analysis of the optimal location of potential pellet plants by means of a GIS approach (location-allocation analysis) and a cost evaluation of the pellets production chain. The residual biomass potential from woody crops in Majorca Island was estimated at 35,874 metric tons dry matter (t DM) per year, while the wood and agri-food industries produced annually 21,494 t DM and 2717 t DM, respectively. Thus, there would be enough resource available for the installation of 10 pellet plants of 6400 t·year−1 capacity. These plants were optimally located throughout the island of Mallorca with a maximum threshold distance of 28 km for biomass transport from the production points. Values found for the biomass cost at the pellet plant ranged between 57.1 €·t−1 and 63.4 €·t−1 for biomass transport distance of 10 and 28 km. The cost of pelleting amounted to 56.7 €·t−1; adding the concepts of business fee, pellet transport and profit margin (15%), the total cost of pelleting was estimated at 116.6 €·t−1. The present study provides a proposal for pellet production from residual woody biomass that would supply up to 2.8% of the primary energy consumed by the domestic and services sector in the Balearic Islands.

The effects of the inclusion of raw glycerin (GLYC) and lecithin in the diet on egg production, egg quality and total tract apparent retention (TTAR) of dietary components was studied inbrown egg-laying hens from 23 to 51 wk of age. The experimental design was completelyrandomized with six diets combined as a 2 × 3 factorial with two levels of GLYC (0 vs.70 g/kg) and three animal fat to lecithin ratios (40:0, 20:20 and 0:40 g/kg). Each treatmentwas replicated eight times and the experimental unit was a cage with ten hens. Productionwas recorded by replicate every 28-d period and cumulatively. For the entire experiment, the inclusion of GLYC in the diet hindered feed conversion ratio per kilogram of eggs (2.071vs. 2.039; P < 0.05) but did not affect any of the other production or egg quality traits studied. The replacement of animal fat by lecithin (40:0, 20:20 and 0:40 g/kg) increased egg weight(60.1, 60.7 and 61.8 g, respectively; P < 0.001) and egg mass production (56.8, 57.5 and58.8 g/d, respectively; P < 0.01) and improved yolk color as measured by the DSM colorfan (9.2, 9.2 and 9.5, respectively; P < 0.001) and feed conversion ratio per kilogram of eggs(2.072, 2.068 and 2.027, respectively; P < 0.05). Feed intake, egg production and body weightgain, however, were not affected. The inclusion of GLYC in the diet did not affect nutrientretention but lecithin inclusion improved TTAR of dry matter (P < 0.05), organic matter(P < 0.05), ether extract (P < 0.001) and gross energy (P < 0.001). In summary, the inclusionof 70 g glycerol/kg diet hindered feed conversion ratio per kilogram of eggs but did notaffect any other production or digestibility trait. The replacement of animal fat by lecithinimproved egg weight, egg yolk color and nutrient digestibility. Consequently, lecithin canbe used as a lipid source in laying hen diets with beneficial effects on egg production

The present work summarizes research related to the definition of nutrient recommendations for feeds used in the intensive production of rabbit's meat. Fibre is the main chemical constituent of rabbit diets that typically contain 320 to 360 and 50 to 90 g/kg of insoluble and soluble fibre, respectively. Instead, the dietary contents of cereal grains (∼120 to 160 g/kg), fat (15 to 25 g/kg) and protein concentrates (150 to 180 g/kg) are usually low with respect to other intensively reared monogastric animals. Cell wall constituents are not well digested in rabbits, but this effect is compensated by its stimulus of gut motility, which leads to an increasing rate of passage of digesta, and allows achieving an elevated dry matter intake. A high feed consumption and an adequate balance in essential nutrients are required to sustain the elevated needs of high-productive rabbits measured either as reproductive yield, milk production or growth rate in the fattening period. Around weaning, pathologies occur in a context of incomplete development of the digestive physiology of young rabbits. The supply of balanced diets has also been related to the prevention of disorders by means of three mechanisms: (i) promoting a lower retention time of the digesta in the digestive tract through feeding fibre sources with optimal chemical and physical characteristics, (ii) restricting feed intake after weaning or (iii) causing a lower flow of easily available substrates into the fermentative area by modifying feed composition (e.g. by lowering protein and starch contents, increasing its digestibility or partially substituting insoluble with soluble fibre), or by delaying age at weaning. The alteration in the gut microbiota composition has been postulated as the possible primary cause of these pathologies.

ABSTRACT The present work deals with the potential of prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica (L) Mill.) biomass as a feedstock for bioethanol and biogas. In order to reach this objective different procedures aiming at the production of non-cellulosic bioethanol from cladodes were carried out; yields from156 to 221 litres of bioethanol per ton of dry matter were found. Mesophilic anaerobic digestion of cladodes was also studied and yields around 198 m3 of methane per ton of dry matter were reached. From these results, processes on an industrial scale were designed for both pathways of energy conversion of prickly-pear biomass and the respective energy balances were calculated. They resulted to be self-sufficient from an energetic point of view; the bioethanol pathway generated a thermal energy surplus of 1,235 kcal per litre of ethanol, while around 140 kep of total energy (heat + electricity) were obtained from the anaerobic digestion of one ton of dry cladodes. Finally, the potential production of both biofuels from prickly pear biomass was estimated for a specific area. The province of Almeria was chosen because of its climate conditions and the previous existence of prickly pear plantations. The area suitable for prickly pear cultivation in the province was estimated at a maximum of 100.616 ha, with an average yield of about 5 t DM ha-1 year-1. If prickly pear biomass were cropped for bioethanol in Almeria, the potential production of bioethanol could reach 82,158 m3 year-1, in either two macrodistilleries (100,000 L day-1) or 49 microdestilleries (5,000 L day-1). If the biogas pathway were preferred, 99. 4 Mm3 of methane could be reached and this would represent 79 CHP plants (500 kW each one).

ABSTRACT The global aim of this thesis has been to study the effect of dietary carbohydrates on growth, performance, digestion and intestinal barrier in 25-d weaned rabbits. In addition there has also been studied which is the best period to determine the fecal digestibility after weaning. The first experiment focused on the effect of Neutral Detergent Soluble Fibre (NDSF) on gut barrier function, digestion, intestinal microbiota and growth performance n rabbits in the post-weaning period. Three isonutritive diets which only varied in the levels of soluble fiber were formulated such as it described as follows: a control diet (AH) containing 103 g of neutral detergent soluble fiber, including alfalfa as main source of fiber, was replaced by a mixture of beet and apple pulp (75-25) in the B-AP diet and, by a mix of oat hulls and soybean protein concentrate (88:12) in the OH diet, resulting 131 and 79 g of NDFS/kg of dry matter, respectively. Rabbits, weaned at 25 days of age, were fed the experimental diets up to 35 days of age, moment in which they were slaughtered for apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and starch, mucosa morphology, sucrose activity, characterization of lamina propria lymphocytes and intestinal microbiota. To assess mucosal morphology, 19 suckling 35-d-old rabbits were also used. For mortality study, besides these animals, 118 additional rabbits per treatment were fed the experimental diets for two weeks period and thereafter received a commercial diet until 60 days of age. Rabbits were water medicated during the whole experimental period (100 ppm de apramicine sulphate and 120 ppm of tylosine tartrate). Level of soluble fiber improved all the parameters used for the characterization of the intestinal barrier condition. Villous height of the jejunal mucosa increased with dietary soluble fiber (P=0.001). Villous height of jejunal mucosa increased with dietary soluble fiber (P = 0.001). Rabbits fed the highest level of soluble fiber (BA-P diet) showed the highest villous height/crypth depth ratio (8.14; P = 0.001), sucrase specific activity (8671 μmol glucose/ g protein; P = 0.019), and the greatest ileal starch digestibility (96.8%; P = 0.002). The opposite effects were observed in rabbits fed decreased levels of soluble fiber (AH and OH diets; 4.70, 5,848 μmol of glucose/g of protein, as average, respectively). The lowest ileal starch digestibility was detected for animal fed OH diet (93.2%). Suckling rabbits of the same age showed a lower villous height/crypt depth ratio (6.70) compared with the B-AP diet group, but this ration was higher that the AH or OH diet groups. Lower levels of soluble fiber tended (P = 0.074) to increase the cellular immune response (CD8+ lymphocytes). Diet affected IL-2 production (CD25+, P = 0.029; CD5+CD25+, P = 0.057), with no clear relationship between soluble fiber and IL-2. The intestinal microbiota biodiversity was not affected by diets (P ≥ 0.38). Animals fed B-AP and AH diets had a reduced cecal frequency of detection compatible with Campylobacter spp. (20.3 vs. 37.8, P = 0.074), and Clostridium perfringens (4.3 vs. 17.6%, P = 0.047), compared with the OH diet group. Moreover, the mortality rates decreased from 14.4 (OH diet) to 5.1% (B-AP diet) with the increased presence of soluble fiber in the diet. Between 32 and 35 days of age, faecal apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and starch was determined (14/diet). This group, plus another nine rabbits/diet were used to determine weight of stomach and caecum and their contents, cecal fermentation traits and similarity rate (SR) of intestinal microbiota. Besides, growth performance parameters (35 rabbits/diet) were studied during the whole fattening period, in animals consuming the experimental feed after the weaning up to 35 days of age and later on a commercial diet up animals reached 60 days of age. Increasing levels of Neutral Detergent Soluble Fiber improved faecal dry matter and energy digestibility (P<0.001). NDSF inclusion improved linearly weight of the caecal content (P=0.001) and the total gastrointestinal tract (P=0.008), and in the previous days to slaughter a linear decrease of daily feed intake in diet with highest level of soluble fiber was also observed. Stomach pH decreased linearly with increasing levels of NDFS (P≤0.041). No relation between NDSF level on pH, concentration and molar proportion of VFA was found. Treatments appeared to influence the similarity rate of microbiota, even higher to mother effect. These effects were higher in ileum than in caecum. A linear positive effect of feed efficiency was observed, which increased around 12% in the two weeks post-weaning (25-39d) and 3% in the whole fattening period between extreme diets with highest levels of soluble fiber. Average daily feed intake during the two weeks after weaning and in the whole fattening period, tended (P≤0.079) to increase with highest levels of NDSF; although there were no effect on daily weight gain (≥0.15). In conclusion, an increase of soluble fiber in the feed seems to be beneficial for animal health, due to improve mucose integrity and reduce detection frequency of those poten tial pathogens like C. perfringens and Campylobacter spp. According to these results, level of soluble fiber should be taking care in feed rabbit formulation in the post-weaning period. The objective of the second experiment was to determine the effect of source of starch on digestion, intestinal microbiota and growth performance in twenty-five-day old weaned rabbits. To accomplish with this aim three iso-nutritive diets were formulated with different source of starch: raw wheat, boiled wheat and a combination of boiled wheat and boiled rice. Two groups of 99 and 193 rabbits were weaned at 25 days of age. The first group was used for growth performance determination following the same protocol than in previous experiment. The second group was used to determine faecal digestibility from 32 to 35 d, apparent ileal digestibility (AID) at 35 d, jejunal mucosa morphology, caecal fermentation traits and characterization of intestinal microbiota. For mortality, two additional groups of 384 (medicated) and 177 (not medicated) were used in order to study the effect of antibiotic water supply supplementation. Heat processing of starch slightly improved ileal digestibility of starch (P=0.020) but did not modify the flow of starch to the caecum. An increase in frequency of detection of Campylobacter spp. y Ruminococcus spp. was observed in the caecum (P≤0.023), with no changes at ileal level. Heat processing of wheat did not modify growth performance, mortality, ileal or faecal digestibility and mucosa morphology. Partial substitution of boiled wheat for boiled rice in the diet impaired ileal starch digestibility (P=0.020) and increased the ileal flow of this nutrient to the caecum (P=0.007). However, it did not affect mortality rate, although changes in the ileal and caecal intestinal microbiota were detected, decreasing the frequency of detection of Campylobacter spp. (both ileum and caecum), Helicobacter spp. (at ileum) and Ruminococcus spp (at caecum) and increasing the Bacteroides spp. (at caecum) (P≤0.046). The effect of boiled rice supplementation did not alter growth performance, mortality, ileal or faecal digestibility of other nutrients than starch, and mucosa morphology. Medication of rabbits reduced the ileal frequency of detection of most bacteria studied (P≤0.048), especially for Campylobacter spp., Clostridium perfringens y Propionibacterium spp. (P≤0.048), resulting the effect higher at ileal than caecal level and relating it with a strong reduction of mortality rate (P<0.001). In conclusion, the results of this experiment make think that the source of starch affects the intestinal microbiota but they do not seem to influence animal health. In relation to the effect of heat processed the use of cooked wheat or cooked rice it does not seem to im prove the results obtained with hard wheat, but there would be necessary more experiments that were confirming this point. The last experiment focused on a methodological aspect. Considering that, weaned rabbits have a different digestive pattern than older animals due to their digestive immaturity; the fixed objective was to determine the best procedure for faecal digestibility determination in young rabbits in the post-weaning period. Fifteen rabbits from 5 different litters were weaned at 25 days of age and fed with a commercial feed. Feed intake and faeces excretion were recorded daily from 25 to 40 days of age for dry matter digestibility (DMd) determination. Litter affected daily DM intake and excretion (P=0.013 y 0.014, respectively) and tended to affect DMd (P=0.061). Age affected all these factors (P<0.001), but ingestion increased slowly than dry matter excretion during the first week buth they evolved similarly in the second week. The correlation between daily feed intakes was higher with the faeces excretion of the day than with faeces excretion of the next day, and the first values were used to determine daily DMd. The DMd decreased linearly from weaning to 32 d of age (2.17±0.25 percentage units per day), whereas from 32 to 40 d remained constant (69.4±0.47%). On the other hand, average standard deviation of DMd decreased by 54% when the length of collection period increased from 2 to 6d. Consequently to the obtained results, it could be concluded that it would not be advisable to start digestibility trials before the 32 days of age and that the number of animals required to detect a significant difference among means would depend on the collection period.

The aim of this work was to assess the effects of four doses of three commercial fibrolytic enzymes on ruminal fermentation of rice straw, maize stover and Pennisetum purpureum clon Cuba CT115 hay in batch cultures of ruminal micro-organisms from sheep. One enzyme was produced by Penicillium funiculosum (PEN) and two were from Trichoderma longibrachiatum (TL1 and TL2). Each liquid enzyme was diluted 200 (D1), 100 (D2), 50 (D3) and 10 (D4) - fold and applied to each substrate in quadruplicate over time and incubated for 120 h in rumen fluid. The D4 dose of each enzyme increased (P<0.05) the fractional rate of gas production and organic matter effective degradability for all substrates, and TL2 had similar effects when applied at D3. In 9 h incubations, PEN at D4, TL1 at all tested doses, and TL2 at D2, D3 and D4 increased (P<0.05) volatile fatty acid production and dry matter degradability for all substrates. The commercial enzymes tested were effective at increasing in vitro ruminal fermentation of low-quality forages, although effective doses varied with the enzyme.

An in vitro experiment was carried out using the Hohenheim gas production technique to evaluate 24-h gas production, apparently and truly degraded dry matter (DM), partitioning factor (PF), short chain fatty acids, crude protein (CP) and carbohydrate (CHO) fractionation of grass and multipurpose tree species (MPTS) foliage diets. Four grasses and three MPTS were used to formulate 12 diets of equal mixtures (0.5:0.5 on DM basis) of each grass with each MPTS. In vitro gas production was terminated after 24 h for each diet. True DM degradability was measured from incubated samples and combined with gas volume to estimate PF. Diets had greater (P<0.001) CP (102–183 g/kg DM) content than sole grasses (66–131 g/kg DM) and lower (P<0.001) concentrations of fibre fractions. Contrary to in vitro apparently degraded DM, in vitro truly degraded DM coefficient was greater (P<0.001) in diets (0.63–0.77) than in sole grasses (0.48–0.68). The PF was on average higher in diets than in sole grasses. The proportion of potentially degradable CP fractions (A1, B1, B2 and B3, based on the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System) in the diets ranged from 971 to 989 g/kg CP. Crude protein fractions, A and B2 were greater in diets but B1 and B3 fractions were less in diets than in sole grasses. A similar trend was also observed in the CHO fractions. Results showed that the nutritive value of the four grasses was improved when MPTS leaves were incorporated into the diet and this could ensure higher productivity of the animals.

Cover crops in Mediterranean vineyards are scarcely used due to water competition between the cover crop and the grapevine; however, bare soil management through tillage or herbicides tends to have negative effects on the soil over time (organic matter decrease, soil structure and soil fertility degradation, compaction, etc). The objective of this study was to understand how soil management affects soil fertility, compaction and infiltration over time. To this end, two bare soil techniques were compared, tillage (TT) and total herbicide (HT) with two cover crops; annual cereal (CT) and annual grass (AGT), established for 8 years. CT treatment showed the highest organic matter content, having the biggest amount of biomass incorporated into the soil. The annual adventitious vegetation in TT treatment (568 kg dry matter ha-1) that was incorporated into the soil, kept the organic matter content higher than HT levels and close to AGT level, in spite of the greater aboveground annual biomass production of this treatment (3632 kg dry matter ha-1) whereas only its roots were incorporated into the soil. TT presented the highest bulk density under the tractor track lines and a greatest resistance to penetration (at 0.2 m depth). AGT presented bulk density values (upper 0.4 m) lower than TT and penetration resistance in CT lower (at 0.20 m depth) than TT too. ABSTRACT The main objective of this thesis project was to increase the protein efficiency in ruminant diets by using protected protein (sunflower meal and spring pea), and improving the prediction of microbial protein supply. Commercial sunflower meal (SFM) and spring pea (SP) were treated with 4 N solutions (200 mL/kg) of malic acid (268.2 g/L) or orthophosphoric acid (130.6 g/L). Daily, two fractions of 12.5 kg of one of these meals were successively sprayed with the tested acid solution in a concrete mixer using a sprayer. Both fractions were then mixed and allowed to rest for 1 h at room temperature. The blend was then dried in a forced air oven at 120 ºC for 1 h. Then the oven was turned off and the treated material was left in the oven overnight. During the drying process, the material was stirred every 30 min during the first 2 h and then every 60 min for the subsequent 5 h. This process was repeated until the amounts of treated flour needed for the different trials performed. In the first experiment (chapter 3), ruminal and intestinal digestion trials were conducted to study the effects of the application of these acid solutions and heat to protect proteins of SFM and SP against ruminal degradation using three wethers fitted with rumen and duodenum cannulae. The ruminal digestion study was carried out in three experimental periods in which the wethers were successively fed three isoproteic diets including SFM and SP, untreated or treated with malic or orthophosphoric acids. The experimental periods of 21 days included successively: 10 days of diet adaptation, SFM and SP particle ruminal transit study (days 11–14) and ruminal nylon-bag incubations (days 15–21). The meals incubated in each experimental period were those corresponding to the associated diet. Rumen bacteria were labelled from days 11 to 21 by continuous intra-ruminal infusion of a 15N source and the rumen was emptied at the end of in situ incubations in each period to isolate solid adherent bacteria and liquid associate bacteria. The intestinal digestion trial was conducted twenty days after the end of the ruminal studies to eliminate the 15N enrichment in the digesta. The tested samples were composite samples obtained pooling the different ruminally undegraded residues to be representative of the chemical composition of the ruminally undegraded fraction (RU). Wethers were fed the untreated diet to determine the intestinal digestibility of untreated and treated meals using the mobile nylon bag technique. In addition, protein in untreated and treated meals and their 0 h, composite and intestinally undigested samples were extracted and subjected to electrophoresis to determine the digestion site of the different protein fractions. Estimates of the RU and its intestinal digestibility of dry matter, organic matter (only for RU), crude protein (CP) and starch (only in SP) were obtained considering ruminal microbial contamination and particle comminution and outflow rates. When corrected for the microbial contamination taking place in the rumen, estimates of RU and intestinal digestibility decreased in all tested fractions for both feeds. All RU estimates increased with the protective treatments, whereas intestinal digestibility-dry matter also increased in SFM. Low intestinal digestibility-CP values in untreated and treated samples suggested the presence of non-heat labile antitrypsin factors in SP. Protective treatments of both feeds led to consistent increases in the intestinal digested fraction of dry matter and CP, being only numerically different for SP-starch (60.5% as average). However, treatments also reduced the organic matter fermentation, which may decrease ruminal microbial protein synthesis. Electrophoretic studies showed albumin disappearance in both SFM and SP, whereas changes in other RU proteins were more pronounced in SP than SFM. The chemical composition of bacteria associated with solid (SAB) and liquid (LAB) rumen-digesta phases was studied to examine the accuracy of a previous regression system determining the underevaluation of SAB-nutrient supply using 15N as marker and LAB as microbial reference (chapter 4). Compared with SAB, LAB showed lower contents of organic matter, polysaccharide-glucose and total lipids and the opposite for the CP content and the 15N enrichment. Present data fitted well to the previous relationship predicting the 15N enrichment of SAB from the same value in LAB. This new equation allows establishing an underevaluation in the supply of CP from the synthesized SAB in 22.0% if LAB is used as reference. Another relationship calculated using mean diet values from the literature confirmed the magnitude of this error. This underevaluation was higher for the supply of glucose (43.1%) and still higher for the lipid supply (59.9%) as a consequence of the lower contents of these both fractions in LAB than in SAB. These errors should be considered to obtain more accurate estimates of the microbial nutrient supply and to improve ruminant nutrition. A production study was performed in experiment 2 (chapter 5) to examine the effects of treating SFM and SP meals with orthophosphoric or malic acid solutions on growth performance, concentrate intake, and carcass yield and fatness of growing-fattening lambs. Ninety "Entrefino" cross male lambs from three commercial farms (average initial body weights (BW) = 14.6, 15.3 and 13.3 kg) were randomly assigned to five diets with different acid treatment and protein levels, and fattened to an average slaughter weight of 25 kg. Protein sources in the control concentrate (C; CP=18%) were soybean meal and untreated SFM and SP. In three of the experimental concentrates, orthophosphoric acid-treated meals substituted untreated SFM and SP (Orthophosphoric Control, PC; CP=18% dry matter basis), and soybean meal was partially (Medium Substitution Orthophosphoric, MSP; CP=16.7%) or totally removed (Total Substitution Orthophosphoric, TSP; CP=15.6%). In addition, in one concentrate orthophosphoric acid was replaced by malic acid to protect these meals (Medium Substitution Malic, MSM; CP= 16.7%). Wheat straw (roughage source) and concentrate were offered ad libitum. Eighteen lambs were allocated to six pens of three animals on each diet. Data were analyzed using a factorial analysis with initial body weight BW as covariate and farm of origin as block. Data on concentrate intake and feed conversion efficiency were analyzed using pen as experimental unit, while data on average daily gain, carcass yield, dorsal fat, and kidney-pelvic-fat were analyzed with lamb as experimental unit. No effect associated with the CP level was observed on any parameter. This suggests that with protected proteins it is possible to feed concentrates with 15.6% CP (dry matter basis) reducing the quantity of vegetable protein meals to include in the concentrate as well as the quality of the protein concentrates. Lambs feed MSM had higher average daily gains (15.2%; P= 0.042), and better hot carcass yields (1.3 percentage points; P= 0.037) than lambs feed MSP. This probably can be explained by ruminal malate actions and by greater protection effects obtained with malic acid.

The effects of solutions of malic or orthophosphoric acids (0.752 Eqg/kg of feed) and heat to protect proteins of sunflower meal (SFM) and spring pea (SP) against ruminal degradation were studied using particle transit, 15N infusion, in situ and electrophoretic techniques. Three wethers fitted with rumen and duodenum cannulae were successively fed three isoproteic diets including SFM and SP, untreated or treated with malic or orthophosphoric acids. Incubations of tested meals were only performed while feeding the respective diet. Estimates of the ruminally undegraded fraction (RU) and its intestinal digestibility of dry matter, organic matter (only for RU), crude protein and starch (only in SP) were obtained considering ruminal microbial contamination and particle comminution and outflow rates. Low intestinal digestibility-crude protein values suggested the presence of antitrypsin factors in SP. Protective treatments of both feeds led to consistent increases in the intestinal digested fraction of dry matter and crude protein, being only numerically different for SP-starch (60.5% as average). However, treatments also reduced the organic matter fermentation, which may decrease ruminal microbial protein synthesis. Two in vitro experiments were conducted to analyse the effects of replacing dietary barley grain with wastes of tomato and cucumber fruits and a 1 : 1 tomato : cucumber mixture on rumen fermentation characteristics and microbial abundance. The control (CON) substrate contained 250 g/kg of barley grain on a dry matter (DM) basis, and another 15 substrates were formulated by replacing 50, 100, 150, 200 or 250 g of barley grain/kg with the same amount (DM basis) of tomato or cucumber fruits or 1 : 1 tomato : cucumber mixture. In Expt 1, all substrates were incubated in batch cultures with rumen micro-organisms from goats for 24 h. Increasing amounts of tomato, cucumber and the mixture of both fruits in the substrate increased final pH and gas production, without changes in final ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) concentrations, substrate degradability and total volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, indicating that there were no detrimental effects of any waste fruits on rumen fermentation. Therefore, in Expt 2 the substrates including 250 g of waste fruits (T250, C250 and M250 for tomato, cucumber and the mixture of both fruits, respectively) and the CON substrate were incubated in single-flow continuous-culture fermenters for 8 days. Total VFA production did not differ among substrates, but there were differences in VFA profile. Molar proportions of propionate, isobutyrate and isovalerate were lower and acetate : propionate ratio was greater for T250 compared with CON substrate. Fermentation of substrates containing cucumber (C250 and M250) resulted in lower proportions of acetate, isobutyrate and isovalerate and acetate : propionate ratio, but greater butyrate proportions than the CON substrate. Carbohydrate degradability and microbial N synthesis tended to be lower for substrates containing cucumber than for the CON substrate, but there were no differences between CON and T250 substrates. Abundance of total bacteria, Fibrobacter succinogenes and Ruminococcus flavefaciens, fungi, methanogenic archaea and protozoa were similar in fermenters fed T250 and CON substrates, but fermenters fed C250 and M250 substrates had lower abundances of R. flavefaciens, fungi and protozoa than those fed the CON substrate. Results indicated that tomato fruits could replace dietary barley grain up to 250 g/kg of substrate DM without noticeable effects on rumen fermentation and microbial populations, but the inclusion of cucumber fruits at 250 g/kg of substrate DM negatively affected some microbial populations as it tended to reduce microbial N synthesis and changed the VFA profile. More studies are needed to identify the dietary inclusion level of cucumber which produces no detrimental effects on rumen fermentation and microbial growth.

Pig slurry is a valuable fertilizer for crop production but at the same time its management may pose environmental risks. Slurry samples were collected from 77 commercial farms of four animal categories (gestating and lactating sows, nursery piglets and growing pigs) and analyzed for macronutrients, micronutrients, heavy metals and volatile fatty acids. Emissions of ammonia (NH3) and biochemical methane potential (BMP) were quantified. Slurry electrical conductivity, pH, dry matter content and ash content were also determined. Data analysis included an analysis of correlations among variables, the development of prediction models for gaseous emissions and the analysis of nutritional content of slurries for crop production. Descriptive information is provided in this work and shows a wide range of variability in all studied variables. Animal category affected some physicochemical parameters, probably as a consequence of different slurry management and use of cleaning water. Slurries from gestating sows and growing pigs tended to be more concentrated in nutrients, whereas the slurry from lactating sows and nursery piglets tended to be more diluted. Relevant relationships were found among slurry characteristics expressed in fresh basis and gas emissions. Predictive models using on-farm measurable parameters were obtained for NH3 (R2 = 0.51) and CH4
