The Chinchón Saint Claire Convent is a Count Foundation of 1653. Some repair works were made around 1965, but some important cracks were remained. This paper describes the soil study made to know, its properties, the reason of these movements and its consequences to the convent and the repair works done. A high swelling phenomenon has been detected. The convent is on a high plasticity clayey soil with soil sandy insertions. The soil water has a high content of sulphates. In addition, some sewer system piping was broken around the convent and frequently flooded the convent crypt. A micropiles underpinning was made and the water leaked has lead to the sewer system to avoid the crypt flooding, also a drainage system has been made and the ground around the church has been paved.

The authors are from UPM and are relatively grouped, and all have intervened in different academic or real cases on the subject, at different times as being of different age. With precedent from E. Torroja and A. Páez in Madrid Spain Safety Probabilistic models for concrete about 1957, now in ICOSSAR conferences, author J.M. Antón involved since autumn 1967 for euro-steel construction in CECM produced a math model for independent load superposition reductions, and using it a load coefficient pattern for codes in Rome Feb. 1969, practically adopted for European constructions, giving in JCSS Lisbon Feb. 1974 suggestion of union for concrete-steel-al.. That model uses model for loads like Gumbel type I, for 50 years for one type of load, reduced to 1 year to be added to other independent loads, the sum set in Gumbel theories to 50 years return period, there are parallel models. A complete reliability system was produced, including non linear effects as from buckling, phenomena considered somehow in actual Construction Eurocodes produced from Model Codes. The system was considered by author in CEB in presence of Hydraulic effects from rivers, floods, sea, in reference with actual practice. When redacting a Road Drainage Norm in MOPU Spain an optimization model was realized by authors giving a way to determine the figure of Return Period, 10 to 50 years, for the cases of hydraulic flows to be considered in road drainage. Satisfactory examples were a stream in SE of Spain with Gumbel Type I model and a paper of Ven Te Chow with Mississippi in Keokuk using Gumbel type II, and the model can be modernized with more varied extreme laws. In fact in the MOPU drainage norm the redacting commission acted also as expert to set a table of return periods for elements of road drainage, in fact as a multi-criteria complex decision system. These precedent ideas were used e.g. in wide Codes, indicated in symposia or meetings, but not published in journals in English, and a condensate of contributions of authors is presented. The authors are somehow involved in optimization for hydraulic and agro planning, and give modest hints of intended applications in presence of agro and environment planning as a selection of the criteria and utility functions involved in bayesian, multi-criteria or mixed decision systems. Modest consideration is made of changing in climate, and on the production and commercial systems, and on others as social and financial.

This paper proposes a method of landscape characterisation and assessment of public works associated with fluvial landscapes, which is validated in the middle section of the Tajo River. In this method, a set of criteria is identified that unifies various characteristics of the landscape associated to the infrastructures. A specific weight is then assigned to each criterion in such a way as to produce a semi-quantitative value ranging from a minimum value of 0 to a maximum value of 10. Taken together, these criteria enable us to describe and assess the value of the public works selected for study, in this case helping us to evaluate the sections of the River Tajo analysed in our study area. Accordingly, the value of all the infrastructures associated to a stretch of the river covering several hundred kilometres was determined and after dividing this stretch into sections, they were compared under equivalent conditions to provide a hierarchal ranking.

ABSTRACT From last century, digital image processing and analysis was converted in a powerful tool to investigate soil properties at multiple resolutions, however, the best final procedure in these works not yet exist. The main problem to study vertical drainage from the moisture distribution, on a vertisol profile, is searching for suitable methods using these procedures. Our aim was to design a digital image processing methodology and its analysis to characterize the moisture content distribution of a vertisol profile. In this research, twelve soil pits were excavated on a bare Mazic Pellic Vertisol, six of them in May 13/2011 and the rest in May 19/2011 after a moderate rainfall event. Digital RGB images were taken from each vertisol pit using a Kodak™ camera selecting a size of 1600x945 pixels. Each soil image was processed to homogenized brightness and then a spatial filter with several window sizes was applied to select the optimum one. The RGB image obtained were divided in each matrix color selecting the best thresholds for each one, maximum and minimum, to be applied and get a digital binary pattern. This one was analyzed by estimating two fractal scaling exponents: box counting dimension (DBC

ABSTRACT Currently and for over 25 years now, the Method of "Prediction of Subsurface Drainage Main Directions in Anisotropic Massifs" has been successfully used in various karstic terrains such as: limestone, gypsum, quartzite, slate, granite and criokarst (karst in the glacier ice). However, until now, it had never been validated in volcanic terrains where is focused this thesis entitled Validation of such Method in the Anaga Massif Volcanic Terrains, in Tenerife. This mathematical method is essentially "predict and quantify" the main directions of groundwater turbulent drainage in anisotropic massifs. This is based on field study of tectoglifes or permanent deformation of the massif, printed on the rocks as a result of previous tectonic stresses. Therefore it is possible to use in anisotropic rock mathematical model instead of the isotropic laminar flow mathematical models defined by Darcy (1856). The Anaga Massif have been chosen to validate the method, because it presents the greatest anisotropy in Tenerife Island, shaped by a large and extensive network of dikes of various shapes and sizes that belong to the family of NE structural axis dikes of the island. An exhaustive field work was carried out in such massif, with 331 collected data (basaltic dikes) and the method was applied, in order to define the preferred direction of the underground drainage in the Anaga massif. This obtained prediction was contrasted to the reality of the drainage in the area, known thanks to the existence of five galleries located in the work area, from which information about their springs was available. In all cases it was possible to demonstrate the fitness of the prediction obtained by the method. It had been demonstrated that a greater geological or geotectonic chaos enhances a better prediction of the method, that predicted very satisfactory results for those water galleries which directions were perpendicular to that predicted by the Method as a drainage preferential direction, for the zone where was located each gallery. No doubt that the validation of the use of the Method in the volcanic terrain of Tenerife, means a considerable change in the world of hydrogeology in this type of terrain. It is the only mathematical tool available to predict a successful drilling direction in advancing water galleries, what also leads to major savings in execution of the drilling works. Furthermore, the method leaves an important legacy to the Canary Islands society, because it opens many lines of work and research to generate a significant development in the world of volcanic hydrogeology.

The proximity between Europe and Africa and the fact that the Strait of Gibraltar has historically acted as a link between races, cultures and religions have made absolutely necessary to establish a relationship between the Northern African coast and the Southern European equivalent. From the Nineteenth Century the possibility of building a permanent link between both continents through the Strait of Gibraltar has been taken into account. In order to establish that relationship it is necessary to have coastal zones completely geo-referenced, under the same geodetic system and with a unique projection system. The paper describes the work carried out in the Strait of Gibraltar for this purpose.

This work studies the most beneficial way of allocating water in an irrigation community in water shortage situations. Therefore, it proposes that the irrigation surface area be divided into homogeneous zones, each with a beneficial relationship with respect to the water applied. The mathematical formula that enables one to obtain the optimal quota for the users or irrigation community as a whole has been found for individual relations of a quadratic or power type, and these have yielded different and complementary characteristics. Dimensionless variables have been used to display the results, and to compare with other alternative allocation rules such as the proportional rule, referencing the situation without water restrictions. As a result, for each water shortage situation, the water that is allocated to each user is obtained, together with the losses in individual income and the losses for the community as a whole. Furthermore, a proposal is put forth for establishing the marginal benefit from the water available, which could be of interest in enabling each community to analyze whether it is in its best interest to invest in increasing the resource, or to sell the resource to other users. Finally, an example is given to demonstrate how the method works and to show that, when the differences between the production schemes are considered, the differences in benefit reduction between the proportional allocation and the optimal allocation are also sizeable. The movement of water through the landscape can be investigated at different scales. This study dealt with the interrelation between bedrock lithology and the geometry of the overlying drainage systems. Parameters of fractal analysis, such as fractal dimension and lacunarity, were used to measure and quantify this relationship. The interrelation between bedrock lithology and the geometry of the drainage systems has been widely studied in the last decades. The quantification of this linkage has not yet been clearly established. Several studies have selected river basins or regularly shaped areas as study units, assuming them to be lithologically homogeneous. This study considered irregular distributions of rock types, establishing areas of the soil map (1:25,000) with the same lithologic information as study units. The tectonic stability and the low climatic variability of the study region allowed effective investigation of the lithologic controls on the drainage networks developed on the plutonic rocks, the metamorphic rocks, and the sedimentary materials existing in the study area. To exclude the effect of multiple in- and outflows in the lithologically homogeneous units, we focused this study on the first-order streams of the drainage networks. The geometry of the hydrologic features was quantified through traditional metrics of fluvial geomorphology and scaling parameters of fractal analysis, such as the fractal dimension, the reference density, and the lacunarity. The results demonstrate the scale invariance of both the drainage networks and the set of first-order streams at the study scale and a relationship between scaling in the lithology and the drainage network.

The design of collective protections of construction works is a topic that is integrated within one of the MBTI subjects. This paper presents an experience for teaching the design of collective protection in building works. Teaching has been done in a bended way. This subject is taught as part of the content of a wider subject included in the Master "Building Technological Innovation" (MBTI) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). This Master's degree is a postgraduate of research nature. Graduating in MBTI implies that students are in a position to begin their PhD thesis. At this stage, often students are not able to follow the rigour established by the schedule of classes. For this reason it is interesting that part of the teaching is developed in a non-classroom based way.

The Partido Stream is a small torrential course that flows into the marsh of the Doñana National Park, an area that was declared a World Heritage Site in 1994. Before 1981, floods occurred, and the stream overflowed onto a floodplain. As an old alluvial fan, the floodplain has its singular orography and functionality. Fromthe floodplain, several drainage channels, locally called caño, discharged into themarsh. The Partido Streamhad themorphology of a caño and covered approximately 8 km from the old fan to the marsh. The stream was straightened and channelised in 1981 to cultivate the old fan. This resulted in floods that were concentrated between the banks in the following years, which caused the depth of water and the shear stress to increase, thus, scouring the river bed and river banks. In this case, the eroded materials were carried towards the marsh where a new alluvial fan evolved. Control measures on the old fan were implemented in 2006 to stop the development of the new alluvial fan downstream over the marsh. Thus, the stream would partially recover its original behaviour that it had before channelisation, moving forwards in a new, balanced state. The present study describes the geomorphological evolution that channelisation has caused since 1981 and the later slow process of recovery of the original hydraulic-sedimentation regime since 2006. Additionally, it deepens the understanding of the original hydraulic behaviour of the stream, combining field data and 2D simulations.

The difficulty of dealing with construction and demolition waste (CDW) on construction sites is not new and continues to be a significant environmental problem. Currently the CDW collection system in Spain is done in a decentralized manner by each sub-contracted company, being necessary to implement effective waste management measures ensuring a correct management and minimization. During the last years several measures have been launched in order to improve and encourage the reuse and recycling of CDW. A widespread solution for CDW recovery is using them as a landscaping aggregate or for road bases and sub-bases. However, measures encouraging onsite prevention still need to be enhanced. This paper studies the major work stage generating CDW and analyses the categories of CDW produced during its execution. For this, several real building sites have been analysed in order to quantify the estimation of CDW generated. Results of this study show that a significant contributor to the CDW generation on building construction sites in Spain are the masonry works. Finally, a Best Practices Manual (BPM) is proposed containing several strategies on masonry works aimed not only at CDW prevention, but also at improving their management and minimization. The use of this BPM together with the Study and Plan of CDW management --required by law--, promotes the environmental management of the company, favouring the cohesion of the construction process organization at all stages giving rise to establishing responsibilities in the field of waste and providing a greater control over the process. Keywords: construction and demolition waste, management, masonry works, good practice measures, prevention.

ABSTRACT The present Thesis establish a methodology in first approach with scientist and technical criteria to assess the protection of persons provided by the water and forest restoration before natural risks in the mountain watersheds. The research has been planned into three sections where it is analysed: 1) the protection provided by the forest cover itself, either it comes from natural regeneration or reforestation; 2) the protection provided by the works executed within the watersheds and in the drainage channels, which it is bound together with the reforestations of water and forest restorations, assessing both effects at a time; and 3) the protection provided by the synergy that arises along the consolidation of the reforestations and the woks executed in the watersheds as the water and forest restoration project considered. This is estimated according the degree of accomplishment of its specific objectives. The impact of the forest covers in the control of natural risks in the mountain has been assessed: a) having into account the experience in the research about the topic developed in the last decades in the alpine area, and b) analysing the dasocratic characteristics of the forest covers and identifying the more representative parameters that take part in the control of the main natural risks in the mountain (torrential rises, avalanches, landslides and rock falls). The protection supplied by the correction works has been assessed considering the watershed as the specific correction unit, as well as analysing their behaviour before the largest number of torrential events possible. Those were defined from the precipitation recorded in the meteorological stations placed within or the closest to the watershed with long historic data. Then the incidents presented in the watershed and the state of the works are verified. The grade of accomplishment of the main objectives has been specified with the evaluation of the synergies raised along the restoration project. It has to be taken into account that the project has its own dynamics and its results show in mid and long term during a period with events unexpected. In any case, the restoration of the mountain basins doesn't imply the disappearance of all risk, but a control of them and the reduction of their effects. Then, it is necessary maintenance of the reforestations and of the works executed to conserve the protection conditions originally designed. The methodology has been applied into five scenes in the Aragonese Pyrenees; three in which works and water and forest restorations were executed in the past (watershed of Arratiecho and Aras torrents, and the Arañones location), and other two without any intervention that make contrast (the right hill-slope of Canal Roya and the south hill-slope of the headwaters of Pineta valley).

Nowadays, translating information about hydrologic and soil properties and processes across scales has emerged as a major theme in soil science and hydrology, and suitable theories for upscaling or downscaling hydrologic and soil information are being looked forward. The recognition of low-order catchments as self-organized systems suggests the existence of a great amount of links at different scales between their elements. The objective of this work was to research in areas of homogeneous bedrock material, the relationship between the hierarchical structure of the drainage networks at hillslope scale and the heterogeneity of the particle-size distribution at pedon scale. One of the most innovative elements in this work is the choice of the parameters to quantify the organization level of the studied features. The fractal dimension has been selected to measure the hierarchical structure of the drainage networks, while the Balanced Entropy Index (BEI) has been the chosen parameter to quantify the heterogeneity of the particle-size distribution from textural data. These parameters have made it possible to establish quantifiable relationships between two features attached to different steps in the scale range. Results suggest that the bedrock lithology of the landscape constrains the architecture of the drainage networks developed on it and the particle soil distribution resulting in the fragmentation processes.
