In the present work a seismic retrofitting technique is proposed for masonry infilled reinforced concrete frames based on the replacement of infill panels by K-bracing with vertical shear link. The performance of this technique is evaluated through experimental tests. A simplified numerical model for structural damage evaluation is also formulated according to the notions and principles of continuum damage mechanics. The proposed model is calibrated with the experimental results. The experimental results have shown an excellent energy dissipation capacity with the proposed technique. Likewise, the numerical predictions with the proposed model are in good agreement with experimental results.

As part of the IRIS_2012 international benchmark, simulations were conducted to analyse impacts on reinforced concrete slabs by both rigid and deformable missiles. The analytical results were compared with physical tests conducted by the Technical Research Center VTT of Finland. In the impact discussed here, a rigid missile perforates the concrete slab. The missile is a thick steel tube filled with concrete with a total mass of 47.4 kg and strikes the target at 136 m/s. The target is a 250 mm thick, reinforced concrete slab that spans 2 m by 2 m and is held in a rigid supporting frame. Characterisation tests were provided for calibration of the parameters of the concrete models selected by the participants. Having reproduced those tests, the authors developed models for the slab and the missile. A damaged plasticity model was used for the concrete and the rebars were explicitly represented. The results obtained were very satisfactory in respect of the damage patterns caused in the concrete and the reinforcement; also, the calculated and measured values of the energy spent by the missile in perforating the slab differed by only 4%.

Cracking of reinforced concrete can occur in certain environments due to rebar corrosion. The oxide layer growing around the bars introduces a pressure which may be enough to lead to the fracture of concrete. To study such an effect, the results of accelerated corrosion tests and finite ele- ment simulations are combined in this work. In previous works, a numerical model for the expansive layer, called expansive joint element , was programmed by the authors to reproduce the effect of the oxide over the concrete. In that model, the expansion of the oxide layer in stress free conditions is simulated as an uniform expansion perpendicular to the steel surface. The cracking of concrete is simulated by means of finite elements with an embedded adaptable cohesive crack that follow the standard cohesive model. In the present work, further accelerated tests with imposed constant cur- rent have been carried out on the same type of specimens tested in previous works (with an embedded steel tube), while measuring, among other things, the main-crack mouth opening. Then, the tests have been numerically simulated using the expansive joint element and the tube as the corroding electrode (rather than a bar). As a result of the comparison of numerical and experimental results, both for the crack mouth opening and the crack pattern, new insight is gained into the behavior of the oxide layer. In particular, quantitative assessment of the oxide expansion relation is deduced from the ex- periments, and a narrower interval for the shear stiffness of the oxide layer is obtained, which could not be achieved using bars as the corroding element, because in that case the numerical results were insensitive to the shear stiffness of the oxide layer within many orders of magnitude

La corrosión del acero es una de las patologías más importantes que afectan a las estructuras de hormigón armado que están expuestas a ambientes marinos o al ataque de sales fundentes. Cuando se produce corrosión, se genera una capa de óxido alrededor de la superficie de las armaduras, que ocupa un volumen mayor que el acero inicial; como consecuencia, el óxido ejerce presiones internas en el hormigón circundante, que lleva a la fisuración y, ocasionalmente, al desprendimiento del recubrimiento de hormigón. Durante los últimos años, numerosos estudios han contribuido a ampliar el conocimiento sobre el proceso de fisuración; sin embargo, aún existen muchas incertidumbres respecto al comportamiento mecánico de la capa de óxido, que es fundamental para predecir la fisuración. Por ello, en esta tesis se ha desarrollado y aplicado una metodología, para mejorar el conocimiento respecto al comportamiento del sistema acero-óxido-hormigón, combinando experimentos y simulaciones numéricas. Se han realizado ensayos de corrosión acelerada en condiciones de laboratorio, utilizando la técnica de corriente impresa. Con el objetivo de obtener información cercana a la capa de acero, como muestras se seleccionaron prismas de hormigón con un tubo de acero liso como armadura, que se diseñaron para conseguir la formación de una única fisura principal en el recubrimiento. Durante los ensayos, las muestras se equiparon con instrumentos especialmente diseñados para medir la variación de diámetro y volumen interior de los tubos, y se midió la apertura de la fisura principal utilizando un extensómetro comercial, adaptado a la geometría de las muestras. Las condiciones de contorno se diseñaron cuidadosamente para que los campos de corriente y deformación fuesen planos durante los ensayos, resultando en corrosión uniforme a lo largo del tubo, para poder reproducir los ensayos en simulaciones numéricas. Se ensayaron series con varias densidades de corriente y varias profundidades de corrosión. De manera complementaria, el comportamiento en fractura del hormigón se caracterizó en ensayos independientes, y se midió la pérdida gravimétrica de los tubos siguiendo procedimientos estándar. En todos los ensayos, la fisura principal creció muy despacio durante las primeras micras de profundidad de corrosión, pero después de una cierta profundidad crítica, la fisura se desarrolló completamente, con un aumento rápido de su apertura; la densidad de corriente influye en la profundidad de corrosión crítica. Las variaciones de diámetro interior y de volumen interior de los tubos mostraron tendencias diferentes entre sí, lo que indica que la deformación del tubo no fue uniforme. Después de la corrosión acelerada, las muestras se cortaron en rebanadas, que se utilizaron en ensayos post-corrosión. El patrón de fisuración se estudió a lo largo del tubo, en rebanadas que se impregnaron en vacío con resina y fluoresceína para mejorar la visibilidad de las fisuras bajo luz ultravioleta, y se estudió la presencia de óxido dentro de las grietas. En todas las muestras, se formó una fisura principal en el recubrimiento, infiltrada con óxido, y varias fisuras secundarias finas alrededor del tubo; el número de fisuras varió con la profundidad de corrosión de las muestras. Para muestras con la misma corrosión, el número de fisuras y su posición fue diferente entre muestras y entre secciones de una misma muestra, debido a la heterogeneidad del hormigón. Finalmente, se investigó la adherencia entre el acero y el hormigón, utilizando un dispositivo diseñado para empujar el tubo en el hormigón. Las curvas de tensión frente a desplazamiento del tubo presentaron un pico marcado, seguido de un descenso constante; la profundidad de corrosión y la apertura de fisura de las muestras influyeron notablemente en la tensión residual del ensayo. Para simular la fisuración del hormigón causada por la corrosión de las armaduras, se programó un modelo numérico. Éste combina elementos finitos con fisura embebida adaptable que reproducen la fractura del hormigón conforme al modelo de fisura cohesiva estándar, y elementos de interfaz llamados elementos junta expansiva, que se programaron específicamente para reproducir la expansión volumétrica del óxido y que incorporan su comportamiento mecánico. En el elemento junta expansiva se implementó un fenómeno de despegue, concretamente de deslizamiento y separación, que resultó fundamental para obtener localización de fisuras adecuada, y que se consiguió con una fuerte reducción de la rigidez tangencial y la rigidez en tracción del óxido. Con este modelo, se realizaron simulaciones de los ensayos, utilizando modelos bidimensionales de las muestras con elementos finitos. Como datos para el comportamiento en fractura del hormigón, se utilizaron las propiedades determinadas en experimentos. Para el óxido, inicialmente se supuso un comportamiento fluido, con deslizamiento y separación casi perfectos. Después, se realizó un ajuste de los parámetros del elemento junta expansiva para reproducir los resultados experimentales. Se observó que variaciones en la rigidez normal del óxido apenas afectaban a los resultados, y que los demás parámetros apenas afectaban a la apertura de fisura; sin embargo, la deformación del tubo resultó ser muy sensible a variaciones en los parámetros del óxido, debido a la flexibilidad de la pared de los tubos, lo que resultó fundamental para determinar indirectamente los valores de los parámetros constitutivos del óxido. Finalmente, se realizaron simulaciones definitivas de los ensayos. El modelo reprodujo la profundidad de corrosión crítica y el comportamiento final de las curvas experimentales; se comprobó que la variación de diámetro interior de los tubos está fuertemente influenciada por su posición relativa respecto a la fisura principal, en concordancia con los resultados experimentales. De la comparación de los resultados experimentales y numéricos, se pudo extraer información sobre las propiedades del óxido que de otra manera no habría podido obtenerse. Corrosion of steel is one of the main pathologies affecting reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environments or to molten salt. When corrosion occurs, an oxide layer develops around the reinforcement surface, which occupies a greater volume than the initial steel; thus, it induces internal pressure on the surrounding concrete that leads to cracking and, eventually, to full-spalling of the concrete cover. During the last years much effort has been devoted to understand the process of cracking; however, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the mechanical behavior of the oxide layer, which is essential in the prediction of cracking. Thus, a methodology has been developed and applied in this thesis to gain further understanding of the behavior of the steel-oxide-concrete system, combining experiments and numerical simulations. Accelerated corrosion tests were carried out in laboratory conditions, using the impressed current technique. To get experimental information close to the oxide layer, concrete prisms with a smooth steel tube as reinforcement were selected as specimens, which were designed to get a single main crack across the cover. During the tests, the specimens were equipped with instruments that were specially designed to measure the variation of inner diameter and volume of the tubes, and the width of the main crack was recorded using a commercial extensometer that was adapted to the geometry of the specimens. The boundary conditions were carefully designed so that plane current and strain fields were expected during the tests, resulting in nearly uniform corrosion along the length of the tube, so that the tests could be reproduced in numerical simulations. Series of tests were carried out with various current densities and corrosion depths. Complementarily, the fracture behavior of concrete was characterized in independent tests, and the gravimetric loss of the steel tubes was determined by standard means. In all the tests, the main crack grew very slowly during the first microns of corrosion depth, but after a critical corrosion depth it fully developed and opened faster; the current density influenced the critical corrosion depth. The variation of inner diameter and inner volume of the tubes had different trends, which indicates that the deformation of the tube was not uniform. After accelerated corrosion, the specimens were cut into slices, which were used in post-corrosion tests. The pattern of cracking along the reinforcement was investigated in slices that were impregnated under vacuum with resin containing fluorescein to enhance the visibility of cracks under ultraviolet lightening and a study was carried out to assess the presence of oxide into the cracks. In all the specimens, a main crack developed through the concrete cover, which was infiltrated with oxide, and several thin secondary cracks around the reinforcement; the number of cracks diminished with the corrosion depth of the specimen. For specimens with the same corrosion, the number of cracks and their position varied from one specimen to another and between cross-sections of a given specimen, due to the heterogeneity of concrete. Finally, the bond between the steel and the concrete was investigated, using a device designed to push the tubes of steel in the concrete. The curves of stress versus displacement of the tube presented a marked peak, followed by a steady descent, with notably influence of the corrosion depth and the crack width on the residual stress. To simulate cracking of concrete due to corrosion of the reinforcement, a numerical model was implemented. It combines finite elements with an embedded adaptable crack that reproduces cracking of concrete according to the basic cohesive model, and interface elements so-called expansive joint elements, which were specially designed to reproduce the volumetric expansion of oxide and incorporate its mechanical behavior. In the expansive joint element, a debonding effect was implemented consisting of sliding and separation, which was proved to be essential to achieve proper localization of cracks, and was achieved by strongly reducing the shear and the tensile stiffnesses of the oxide. With that model, simulations of the accelerated corrosion tests were carried out on 2- dimensional finite element models of the specimens. For the fracture behavior of concrete, the properties experimentally determined were used as input. For the oxide, initially a fluidlike behavior was assumed with nearly perfect sliding and separation; then the parameters of the expansive joint element were modified to fit the experimental results. Changes in the bulk modulus of the oxide barely affected the results and changes in the remaining parameters had a moderate effect on the predicted crack width; however, the deformation of the tube was very sensitive to variations in the parameters of oxide, due to the flexibility of the tube wall, which was crucial for indirect determination of the constitutive parameters of oxide. Finally, definitive simulations of the tests were carried out. The model reproduced the critical corrosion depth and the final behavior of the experimental curves; it was assessed that the variation of inner diameter of the tubes is highly influenced by its relative position with respect to the main crack, in accordance with the experimental observations. From the comparison of the experimental and numerical results, some properties of the mechanical behavior of the oxide were disclosed that otherwise could not have been measured.

The paper reports on a collaborative effort between the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) and their consultants Principia and Stangenberg. As part of the IMPACT III project, reduced scale impact tests of reinforced concrete structures were carried out. The simulation of test X3 is presented here and the numerical results are compared with those obtained in the test, carried out in August 2013. The general object is to improve the safety of nuclear facilities and, more specifically, to demonstrate the capabilities of current simulation techniques to reproduce the behaviour of a reinforced concrete structure impacted by a soft missile. The missile is a steel tube with a mass of 50 kg and travelling at 140 m/s. The target is a 250 mm thick, 2,1 m by 2,1 m reinforced concrete wall, held in a stiff supporting frame. The reinforcement includes both longitudinal and transverse rebars. Calculations were carried out before and after the test with Abaqus (Principia) and SOFiSTiK (Stangenberg). In the Abaqus simulation the concrete is modelled using solid elements and a damaged plasticity formulation, the rebars with embedded beam elements, and the missile with shell elements. In SOFiSTiK the target is modelled with non-linear, layered shell elements for the reinforcement on both sides; non-linear shear deformations of shell/plate elements are approximately included. The results generally indicate a good agreement between calculations and measurements.

Laser Welding (LW) is more often used in manufacturing due to its advantages, such as accurate control, good repeatability, less heat input, opportunities for joining of special materials, high speed, capability to join small dimension parts etc. LW is dedicated to robotized manufacturing, and the fabrication cells are using various level of flexibility, from specialized robots to very flexible setups. This paper features several LW applications using two industrially-scaled manufacturing cells at UPM Laser Centre (CLUPM) of Polytechnical University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid). The one dedicated to Remote Laser Welding (RLW) of thin sheets for automotive and other sectors uses a CO2 laser of 3500 W. The second has a high flexibility, is based on a 6-axis ABB robot and a Nd:YAG laser of 3300 W, and is meant for various laser processing methods, including welding. After a short description of each cell, several LW applications experimented at CLUPM and recently implemented in industry are briefly presented: RLW of automotive coated sheets, LW of high strength automotive sheets, LW vs. laser hybrid welding (LHW) of Double Phase steel thin sheets, and LHW of thin sheets of stainless steel and carbon steel (dissimilar joints). The main technological issues overcame and the critical process parameters are pointed out. Conclusions about achievements and trends are provided.

This work shows a numerical procedure for bond between indented wires and concrete, and the coupled splitting of the concrete. The bond model is an interface, non-associative, plasticity model. It is coupled with a cohesive fracture model for concrete to take into account the splitting of such concrete. The radial component of the prestressing force, increased by Poisson’s effect, may split the surrounding concrete, decreasing the wire confinement and diminishing the bonding. The combined action of the bond and the splitting is studied with the proposed model. The results of the numerical model are compared with the results of a series of tests, such as those which showed splitting induced by the bond between wire and concrete. Tests with different steel indentation depths were performed. The numerical procedure accurately reproduces the experimental records and improves knowledge of this complex process.

Esta tesis ha estudiado los morteros celulares, centrándose en la experimentación con pastas de cemento aireadas (PCA) con polvo de aluminio como agente expansor. El objetivo es el desarrollo de un material cementicio con una baja conductividad térmica que sirva como aislamiento térmico. La naturaleza inorgánica del material lo hace incombustible, en contraste con las espumas poliméricas existentes en el mercado, cuya aplicación en cámaras ventiladas ha sido prohibida por normativas de construcción tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. Las posibles aplicaciones son con proyección neumática o en paneles prefabricados. Se han ensayado dos series de pastas de cemento con polvo de aluminio: - Serie WPC/CAC/CH. Mezcla de referencia con cemento blanco (WPC), cemento de aluminato cálcico (CAC) y cal aérea (CH) en proporción 5:1:4. - Serie OPC/CH. Mezcla de referencia con cemento portland con cenizas volantes (OPC) y cal aérea (CH) en proporción OPC/CH de 4:1 A las mezclas de referencia se le han añadido adiciones de metacaolín (MK) (10 y 20%) o sepiolita (SP) (1 y 2%) para observar el efecto que producen tanto en el mortero fresco como en el mortero endurecido. Se ha estudiado la reología de las pastas en estado fresco, analizando el proceso de expansión de las pastas, registrando los valores de tensión de fluencia, aire ocluido y temperatura durante la expansión. Con los valores obtenidos se ha discutido la influencia de las adiciones utilizadas en la cinética de corrosión del polvo de aluminio que genera la expansión, concluyendo que las adiciones puzolánicas (CV y MK) y la SP reducen mucho el periodo de inducción, lo que provoca poros más grandes y mayor cantidad de aire ocluido. Asimismo se ha analizado la relación entre la tensión de fluencia y el contenido de aire ocluido, deduciendo que a mayor tensión de fluencia en el momento de iniciarse la expansión, menor tamaño de poros y contenido de aire ocluido. Finalmente, se han obtenido las densidades y capacidades de retención de agua de los morteros frescos. Para caracterizar la red porosa de las pastas aireadas endurecidas, se obtuvieron tanto las densidades reales, netas, aparentes y relativas como las porosidades abiertas, cerradas y totales con ensayos hídricos. Finalmente se obtuvieron imágenes de los poros con tomografía axial computerizada para obtener las porosimetrías de las muestras. La caracterización de la red porosa ha servido para terminar de analizar lo observado en la evolución de la expansión del mortero fresco. Se ha analizado la influencia de la red porosa en la conductividad térmica, obtenida con caja caliente, comparándola con la existente en la literatura existente tanto de morteros celulares como de espumas poliméricas. Se concluye que los valores de conductividad térmica conseguida están en el mínimo posible para un material celular de base cementicia. La microestructura se ha estudiado con microscopía electrónica de barrido, difracción de rayos X y ensayos térmicos TG/ATD, observando que los productos de hidratación encontrados coinciden con los que se producen en morteros sin airear. Las imágenes SEM y los resultados de ultrasonidos han servido para analizar la presencia de microfisuras de retracción en las pastas aireadas, observando que en las muestras con adiciones de MK y SP, se reduce la presencia de microfisuras. ABSTRACT This thesis has studied cellular mortars, focusing in testing aerated cement pastes with aluminum powder as expansive agent. The purpose is the development of a cementitious material with low thermal conductivity that can be used as thermal isolation. Inorganic nature of this material makes it non-combustible, in contrast with polymeric foams in market, whose application in ventilated double skin façade systems has been banned by building standards, both domestically and internationally. Possible uses for this material are pneumatically sprayed applications and precast panels. Two series of batches with aluminum powder have been tested: - WPC/CAC/CH series. Reference paste with white portland cement (WPC), calcium aluminate cement (CAC) and lime (CH) with 5:1:4 ratio. - OPC/CH series. Reference paste with portland cement with fly ash (OPC) and lime (CH) with 4:1 ratio. Metakaolin (MK) (10 and 20%) or sepiolite (SP) (1 and 2%) additions were used in reference pastes to characterize the effect in fresh and hardened mortar. Rheology in fresh pastes was studied, expansion process of pastes was analyzed, recording yield stress, entrained air and temperature values during expansion. Recorded values were used to discuss influence of additions on reaction kinetics of aluminum powder corrosion, that produces expansion.. Conclusion is that pozzolanic additions (FA and MK) and SP greatly reduce induction period, producing bigger pores and more entrained air. Relation between yield stress and entrained air has been also analyzed, observing that the bigger yield stress at beginning of expansion, the smaller pores size and the lower entrained air values. Finally density and water retention of fresh mortars were obtained. Pore network in hardened aerated cement pastes was characterized by imbibition methods providing true, bulk and relative density, and providing also open, closed and total porosity. Finally, pore system imaging were obtained with computerized axial tomography to study porosimetry of specimens. Pore network characterization was useful to complete facts analysis observed in expansion of fresh mortars. Influence of pore network in thermal conductivity, checked in hot box, was analyzed comparing with those existing values in cellular mortar and polymeric foams researches. It was concluded that thermal conductivity values achieved are close to minimum possible in a cementitious cellular material. Microstructure was studied with Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffractometry and TG-DTA analysis, observing that hydration phases found, are those produced in non aerated mortar. SEM imaging and ultrasound results were useful to analyze shrinkage microcracks in aerated cement pastes, concluding that microcrack presence in specimens with MK and SP additions were reduced.

Entre los requisitos que deben cumplir las estructuras se debe garantizar que estas posean la durabilidad necesaria para permanecer en servicio a lo largo de todo el periodo de vida útil para el que han sido proyectadas. Para conseguir este objetivo las normativas han ido incorporando prescripciones para el diseño del hormigón, en base a distintas clases de exposición dependiendo del origen y magnitud de la agresividad exterior. En ambientes con una elevada agresividad, una de las comprobaciones que debe cumplir el hormigón es que tenga una permeabilidad inferior a los valores máximos fijados según la clase de exposición, y que en caso de considerar como ensayo de referencia el de penetración de agua, analiza el frente de penetración limitando las profundidades de penetración media y máxima. Adicionalmente a las condiciones de diseño según el tipo de ambiente, principalmente basadas en la dosificación del hormigón en términos de la relación agua/cemento y el mínimo contenido de cemento y el recubrimiento de las armaduras, durante la vida en servicio las estructuras pueden están solicitadas por distintas acciones imprevistas que pueden provocar cambios en la microestructura interna del hormigón que modifican su permeabilidad y resistencia, y por tanto pueden alterar la durabilidad inicialmente prevista. Es conocido el efecto de cansancio del hormigón cuando está solicitado por cargas de compresión mantenidas en el tiempo, provocando bajas en su resistencia debido al incremento de la microfisuración. Dada la relación entre la permeabilidad y la microfisuración del hormigón, es previsible el aumento de la permeabilidad en hormigones que han sido precomprimidos durante un periodo largo de tiempo. Los estudios de la permeabilidad en hormigones previamente comprimidos se han realizado analizando periodos de tiempo de compresión cortos que no permiten evaluar el efecto del cansancio sobre la permeabilidad. La presente tesis doctoral investiga la permeabilidad y resistencia a tracción en hormigones que previamente han sido comprimidos en carga mantenida durante distintos plazos de tiempo, al objeto de conocer su evolución en base al tiempo de precompresión. La investigación se apoya en el estudio de otras dos variables como son el tipo de hormigón de acuerdo a su dosificación según el tipo de ambiente considerando una agresividad baja, media o alta, y el grado de compresión aplicado respecto de su carga última de rotura. En los resultados del plan experimental desarrollado se ha obtenido que la permeabilidad presenta un incremento significante con el tiempo de precompresión, que dependiendo del valor inicial de la permeabilidad que tiene el hormigón puede provocar que hormigones que previamente satisfacen las limitaciones de permeabilidad pasen a incumplirlas, pudiendo afectar a su durabilidad. También se confirma la influencia del tiempo de precompresión sobre la resistencia a tracción obteniendo bajas de resistencia importantes en los casos pésimos ensayados, que deben ser tenidas en consideración en tanto afectan a la capacidad resistente del hormigón como a otros aspectos fundamentales como el anclaje de las armaduras en el hormigón armado y pretensado. One of the requirements that structures must meet is to guarantee their durability to remain in service throughout all the working life period for which they have been designed. To achieve this goal, building standards and codes have included specifications for the design of concrete structures, based on different exposure classes depending on the environmental conditions and their origin and magnitude. In severe aggressive environments, one of the specifications the concrete must meet is to have a permeability lower than the maximum values set for a certain exposure class. If this parameter is referenced to water penetration on specimens, then the average and maximum depths of front penetration are analyzed. In addition to the design conditions depending on the exposure class, which regulate the dosage of concrete in terms of the water/cement ratio, minimum samples that have been pre-compressed for a long period of time. Previous studies on permeability have been carried on pre-compressed concrete elements analyzing short periods of time. However, they have not studied the effects of compression forces on concrete in the long term. This Thesis investigates permeability and tensile strength of concrete samples that have been previously compressed under loads applied for different periods of time. The goal is to understand its evolution based on the time exposed to compression. The research variables also include the type of concrete according to the dosage used - depending on the environmental exposure it will have low, medium or high aggressiveness-, and the amount of compression applied in relation to its failure load. Results of the experimental tests showed that permeability increases significantly over the time of pre-compression. Depending on the initial value of permeability, this change could make the concrete not meet the original permeability restrictions and therefore affect its durability. These investigations also confirmed the influence of time of pre-compression in tensile strength, where some cases showed a significant decrease of resistance. La verificación de la seguridad estructural, tanto de estructuras que permitan un cierto grado de deterioro en su dimensionado como de estructuras existentes deterioradas, necesita disponer de modelos de resistencia que tengan en cuenta los efectos del deterioro. En el caso de la corrosión de las armaduras en las estructuras de hormigón armado, la resistencia depende de múltiples factores tales como la sección del acero corroído, el diagrama tensión-deformación del acero corroído, la adherencia hormigón-acero corroído, la fisuración o desprendimiento del hormigón debido a la expansión de los productos de corrosión. En este sentido, la transferencia de las fuerzas a través de la superficie de contacto entre el hormigón y el acero, la adherencia, es uno de los aspectos más importantes a considerar y es la base del comportamiento del hormigón armado como elemento estructural. La adherencia debe asegurar el anclaje de las armaduras y transmitir la tensión tangencial que aparece en las mismas como consecuencia de la variación de las solicitaciones a lo largo de un elemento estructural. Como consecuencia de la corrosión de las armaduras, el desarrollo de la adherencia se altera y, por tanto, la transferencia de la tensión longitudinal. Esta Tesis Doctoral aborda el comportamiento en estado límite último de la adherencia en el hormigón estructural con armaduras corroídas. El objetivo principal es la obtención de un modelo suficientemente realista y fiable para la evaluación de la adherencia con armaduras corroídas en el marco de la verificación de la seguridad estructural de elementos de hormigón armado con armaduras corroídas. Para ello se ha llevado a cabo un programa experimental de ensayos tipo pull-out excéntricos, con diferentes probetas, unas sin corrosión y otras sometidas tanto a procesos de corrosión natural como a procesos de corrosión acelerada, con diferentes grados de deterioro. Este tipo de ensayo de adherencia representa de forma realista y fiable realista los esfuerzos de adherencia en la zona de anclaje. Por otra parte, para la realización de estos ensayos se ha puesto a punto, además del procedimiento de ensayo, un sistema de adquisición de datos entre los que se incluye el empleo de sensores de tipo fibra óptica con redes de Bragg embebidos en la armadura para determinar los parámetros representativos de la adherencia en el hormigón estructural con armaduras corroídas. Por otra parte, la recopilación de los datos de los estudios de adherencia con armaduras corroídas procedentes de la literatura científica, además de los resultados de la presente investigación, junto con la identificación de las variables relevantes en el comportamiento de la adherencia con armaduras sanas y corroídas ha servido para la obtención de una formulación realista y fiable para la evaluación conjunta de la adherencia con armaduras sanas y corroídas a partir de modelos de regresión múltiple. La formulación propuesta ha sido validada mediante criterios estadísticos y comparada con otras formulaciones propuestas en la literatura científica. Además se ha realizado un análisis de las variables influyentes de la formulación propuesta. También se ha obtenido un modelo numérico simple y eficiente, validado con alguno de los ensayos realizados en esta tesis, para simular la adherencia con armaduras sanas y corroídas. Finalmente, se presenta un procedimiento para realizar la evaluación de vigas deterioradas por corrosión mediante el método de los campos de tensiones que incluye la evaluación de la adherencia mediante la formulación sugerida en esta Tesis Doctoral. Las conclusiones alcanzadas en este trabajo han permitido evaluar la adherencia con armaduras corroídas de forma realista y fiable. Asimismo, se ha podido incluir la evaluación de la adherencia en el marco de la verificación de la seguridad estructural en elementos de hormigón armado deteriorados por corrosión. ABSTRACT Structural safety verification of both structures allowing a certain degree of deterioration in design and deteriorated existing structures needs strength models that factor in the effects of deterioration. In case of corrosion of steel bars in reinforced concrete structures, the resistance depends on many things such as the remaining cross-section of the corroded reinforcement bars, the stress-strain diagrams of steel, the concrete-reinforcement bond and corrosion-induced concrete cracking or spalling. Accordingly, the force transfer through the contact surface between concrete and reinforcement, bond, is one of the most important aspects to consider and it is the basis of the structural performance of reinforced concrete. Bond must assure anchorage of reinforcement and transmit shear stresses as a consequence of the different stresses along a structural element As a consequence of corrosion, the bond development may be affected and hence the transfer of longitudinal stresses. This PhD Thesis deals with ultimate limit state bond behaviour in structural concrete with corrode steel bars. The main objective is to obtain a realistic and reliable model for the assessment of bond within the context of structural safety verifications of reinforced concrete members with corroded steel bars. In that context, an experimental programme of eccentric pull-out tests were conducted, with different specimens, ones without corrosion and others subjected to accelerated or natural corrosion with different corrosion degrees. This type of bond test reproduces in a realistic and reliable way bond stresses in the anchorage zone. Moreover, for conducting these tests it was necessary to develop both a test procedure and also a data acquisition system including the use of an embedded fibre-optic sensing system with fibre Bragg grating sensors to obtain the representative parameters of bond strength in structural concrete with corroded steel bars. Furthermore, the compilation of data from bond studies with corroded steel bars from scientific literature, including tests conducted in the present study, along with the identification of the relevant variables influencing bond behaviour for both corroded and non-corroded steel bars was used to obtain a realistic and reliable formulation for bond assessment in corroded and non-corroded steel bars by multiple linear regression analysis. The proposed formulation was validated with a number of statistical criteria and compared to other models from scientific literature. Moreover, an analysis of the influencing variables of the proposed formulation has been performed. Also, a simplified and efficient numerical model has been obtained and validated with several tests performed in this PhD Thesis for simulating the bond in corroded and non-corroded steel bars. Finally, a proposal for the assessment of corrosion-damaged beams with stress field models including bond assessment with the proposed formulation is presented. The conclusions raised in this work have allowed a realistic and reliable bond assessment in corroded steel bars. Furthermore, bond assessment has been included within the context of structural safety verifications in corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete elements.

El siglo XIX fue un siglo dedicado a los grandes edificios públicos. Los teatros, las academias, los museos. Sin embargo la arquitectura durante el siglo XX se dedicará al estudio de la casa. Todos los usos y tipologías se verán fuertemente revisados pero el núcleo de todos los esfuerzos y verdadero inicio de la arquitectura moderna será la vivienda. A partir de ella todos los preceptos modernos se irán aplicando a los distintos programas. Nikolaus Pevsner señala a William Morris como el primer arquitecto moderno porque precisamente entendió que un arte verdaderamente social, en consonancia con su tiempo y la sociedad a la que sirve, ha de ocuparse de aquello que preocupe a la gente. Con la nueva situación de la vivienda en el centro de las motivaciones disciplinares el mueble adopta un nuevo protagonismo. En un momento avanzado de su carrera Marcel Breuer observa entre curioso e irónico cómo el mueble moderno había sido promocionado paradójicamente no por los diseñadores de muebles sino por los arquitectos1. La respuesta la da Le Corbusier en una de sus conferencias de 1931 recogida en Precisiones 2 cuando señala la reformulación del mobiliario como el "nudo gordiano" de cuya resolución pendía la renovación de la planta moderna. El Movimiento Moderno se había visto obligado a atacar este tema para poder avanzar en sus propuestas domésticas. El Movimiento Moderno se propuso solucionar los problemas de la vivienda y de una Europa en reconstrucción pero se exigía además ser capaz de aportar una visión propositiva de la vida moderna. No se trataba únicamente de resolver los problemas ya existentes sino que además había la necesidad autoimpuesta de anticipar la domesticidad del futuro. Para ello sus viviendas al completo, mueble e inmueble, debían de presentarse bajo esa nueva imagen. El manifiesto fundacional de la Deustcher Werkbund extendía el radio de acción del nuevo arquitecto desde la construcción de las ciudades a los cojines del sofá. Este mobiliario tenía la compleja misión de condensar sintéticamente todos esos ideales que la modernidad había traído consigo: abstracción, higiene, fascinación maquínica, confianza positivista en la ciencia o la expresión material optimizada. Objetos de la vida moderna, en palabras de Le Corbusier, susceptibles de suscitar un estado de vida moderno. Pocas sillas en la historia del diseño habrán acarreado tanta polémica y tanta disputa por su autoría como la sillas voladas de tubo de acero en sus diferentes versiones. Para entenderlo situémonos en el año 1927 a las puertas de la exposición "Die Wohnung" ("La vivienda") organizada por los maestros de la Bauhaus y dirigida por Mies van der Rohe en la ladera Weissenhof de Stuttgart. Muchos nombres célebres de la arquitectura mostraron en esa ocasión su personal propuesta para la vivienda moderna y los objetos que la habitan. Entre ellos los muebles con tubo de acero fueron una presencia constante en la exposición pero hubo una pieza que destacó sobre todas las demás por su novedad y audacia. La pieza en cuestión era el modelo de silla volada, esto es, sin apoyos posteriores y cuya rigidez estaba conferida al esfuerzo solidario de la estructura continua de tubo de acero y que terminaría por convertirse en el cruce de caminos de tres figuras de la disciplina arquitectónica: Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe y Mart Stam. Cada uno de ellos desarrolló su propio modelo de silla volada en sus versiones MR por parte de Mies, L&C Arnold de Stam y el posterior modelo BR 33 de Marcel Breuer. Los tres, en algún momento de su vida reclamaron de uno u otro modo su autoría como objetos que les pertenecían intelectualmente. Estas sillas se convirtieron en la expresión máxima de uno de los ansiados anhelos de la modernidad, la propia materialidad del acero, en su versión optimizada, era la que había derivado en una forma completamente nueva de un objeto cotidiano y cuyo tipo estaba ya totalmente asumido. Los nuevos materiales y las nuevas formas de hacer habían irrumpido hasta en los utensilios domésticos, y habían sido capaces de reformularlos. El punto de partida para esta investigación es precisamente esa coincidencia de tres figuras de la arquitectura moderna, los tres de formación artesanal, en un mismo modelo de silla y en una misma fecha. Tres arquitectos que se habían encargado de asegurar que el movimiento moderno no reconocía problemas formales sino solamente de construcción, iban a coincidir en el mismo tiempo y lugar, precisamente en una misma forma, como si tal coincidencia hubiera sido producto de una voluntad de época. Sin embargo el interés de este estudio no radica en una indagación sobre la autoría sino sobre cómo un mismo objeto resulta ser propositivo e interesante en campos muy diversos y la forma en que cada uno lo hace suyo incorporándolo a su propia investigación proyectual. La silla, más allá de ser un objeto de diseño exclusivamente, trasciende su propia escala para situarse inmersa en un proceso de búsqueda y exploración a nivel conceptual, formal, constructivo y estructural en la arquitectura cada uno de ellos. En un momento en que el oficio del arquitecto está siendo intensamente redefinido considero especialmente pertinente esta investigación, que en definitiva versa sobre la forma distintiva en que el pensamiento arquitectónico es capaz de proyectarse sobre cualquier disciplina para reformularla. ABSTRACT The nineteenth century was a century dedicated to the great public buildings; theaters, schools or museums. However the architecture in the twentieth century was devoted to the study of housing. All uses and typologies were heavily revised but the focus of all efforts and true beginning of modern architecture was housing. From these beginnings all modern precepts were applied to the various programs. Nikolaus Pevsner points to William Morris as the first modern architect precisely because he understood that a truly social art in line with its time and the society it serves must deal with social concerns at that time. With the new housing situation at the center of disciplinary concerns furniture took on a new prominence. At an advanced stage of his career Marcel Breuer observed partly with curiosity, partly with irony how modern furniture had been promoted not by furniture designers but by architects. The answer is given by Le Corbusier in one of his lectures of 1931 collected in Precisions when he pointed the reformulation of furniture as the "Gordian knot" for the renewal of modern plan resolution. Modernism had been forced to confront this issue in order to advance their domestic approaches. Modernism not only put forward a solution to the problems of housing and a Europe under reconstruction but is also needed to be able to contribute to an exciting vision of modern life. Not only did solve existing problems but also it had the self-imposed necessity of anticipating future domesticity and to do their houses full, movable and immovable, they should be submitted under this new image. The founding manifesto of the Deutsche Werkbund extended the scope of the new architect from building cities to the couch cushions. This furniture had the complex mission of synthetically condensing all the ideals of modernity had brought with it: abstraction, hygiene, mechanization, positivist confidence in science or material expression. Objects of modern life, in words of Le Corbusier, were likely to give rise a state of modern life. Few chairs in design history have resulted in so much controversy and so much dispute over their invention as the various versions of cantilevered tubular steel chairs. To understand this let us place ourselves in 1927 at the gates of the exhibition "Die Wohnung" ("Housing") organized by the teachers of the Bauhaus and directed by Mies van der Rohe in Stuttgart Weissenhoflung. Many famous names in architecture at that time showed their personal proposals for modern housing and the objects that inhabit them. Amongst these objects, the steel tube furniture was a constant presence at the exhibition but there was a piece so audacious that it stood out from all the others. This piece in question was the cantilever model chair, that is, which had no further rear support and whose rigidity was attributed to the solidity of its continues structure of steel tube. This piece would eventually become the crossroads of three very different personalities: Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe. Each of them developed their own model of cantilevered chair in different versions; The MR model developed by Mies van der Rohe, the L&C by Arnold Stam and a later model BR 33 by Marcel Breuer, and the three, at some point in their lives demanded the authorship of its invention as objects that belonged to them intellectually. These chairs epitomized one of the coveted objects of modernity, steel material in its optimized version, was what had led to a completely new form of an everyday object whose this type was fully adopted on board in design. New materials and production methods had burst into world of household objects, and had been able to reformulate their design. The bold design then became a dark object of controversy. The starting point for this doctoral thesis is the concurrent invention of the same model of chair by three different figures of modern architecture. These three architects, who were responsible for ensuring that the modern movement considered construction rather than form as the main design consideration, were working in the same place and at the same point in time. It was almost as if these three architects were shaped by the culture of the time (Zeitgeist). However the focus of this study lies not in an investigation of responsibility of ownership but in the investigation fo how the same object can turn out to be purposeful and interesting in many different fields and the way in which each researcher makes it his own by developing his own project research. 1927, the year of their meeting, was a initiatory year in the career of our players. The chair, beyond being only a design object transcended its own scale and became immersed in a process of research and development on a conceptual, formal, structural and constructive level in the architectural approach of each of the architects. At a time when the role of the architect is being redefined intensely I consider this research, which ultimately concerns the distinctive way the architectural thought can be projected onto and reformulate any discipline, to be particularly relevant.

Upwardpropagation of a premixed flame in averticaltubefilled with a very leanmixture is simulated numerically using a single irreversible Arrhenius reaction model with infinitely high activation energy. In the absence of heat losses and preferential diffusion effects, a curved flame with stationary shape and velocity close to those of an open bubble ascending in the same tube is found for values of the fuel mass fraction above a certain minimum that increases with the radius of the tube, while the numerical computations cease to converge to a stationary solution below this minimum mass fraction. The vortical flow of the gas behind the flame and in its transport region is described for tubes of different radii. It is argued that this flow may become unstable when the fuel mass fraction is decreased, and that this instability, together with the flame stretch due to the strong curvature of the flame tip in narrow tubes, may be responsible for the minimum fuel mass fraction. Radiation losses and a Lewis number of the fuel slightly above unity decrease the final combustion temperature at the flame tip and increase the minimum fuel mass fraction, while a Lewis number slightly below unity has the opposite effect.

En este trabajo se presentan los diagramas tensióndeformación de un nuevo acero inoxidable con bajo contenido en níquel, un inoxidable convencional AISI 304 y un acero al carbono de uso común en estructuras de hormigón armado. Dicha ductilidad se ha estudiado determinando la tensión máxima (fmax), la tensión en el límite elástico (fy) y la deformación bajo carga máxima (εmax). Los tres materiales se han evaluado utilizando criterios aceptados internacionalmente, como son el índice p (capacidad de rotación plástica), el índice A* (área plástica de endurecimiento) y el índice de tenacidad Id (energía total absorbida en el punto de alargamiento bajo carga máxima), los resultados obtenidos se han comparado con los aceros convencionales de armaduras 500SD, 500N y 500H (EC-2).

The use of reinforcing stainless steels (SS) in concrete have proved to be one of the most effective methods to guarantee the passivity of reinforced concrete structures exposed to chloride contaminated environment. The present research studies the corrosion behaviour of a new duplex SS reinforcements with low nickel content (LND) (more economicaly compatible) is compared with the conventional austenitic AISI 304 SS and duplex AISI 2304 SS. Corrosion behaviour of ribbed SS reinforcements was studied in mortars with chloride content (0, 0.4, 2 and 4% Cl ⎯ ) using linear polarization resistance and potentiostatic pulses technique, Ecorr and Rp values were monitored over the exposure time. The obtained icorr data for the new duplex stainless steel LND no afforded passivity breakdown after one year exposure

Se describe el problema del hinchamiento del hormigón en las presas de doble curvatura. Several chemical reactions are able to produce swelling of concrete for decades after its initial curing, a problem that affects a considerable number of concrete dams around the world. The object of the work reported is to simulate the underlying mechanisms with sufficient accuracy to reproduce the past history and to predict the future evolution reliably. Having studied the available formulations, that considered to be more promising was adopted and introduced via user routines in a commercial finite element code. It is a non isotropic swelling model,compatible with the cracking and other non-linearities displayed by the concrete. The paper concentrates on the work conducted for a double-curvature arch dam. The model parameters were determined on the basis of some parts of the dam’s monitored histories, reliability was then verified using other parts and, finally, predictions were made about the future evolution of the dam and its safety margin.
