A new formalism, called Hiord, for defining type-free higherorder logic programming languages with predicate abstraction is introduced. A model theory, based on partial combinatory algebras, is presented, with respect to which the formalism is shown sound. A programming language built on a subset of Hiord, and its implementation are discussed. A new proposal for defining modules in this framework is considered, along with several examples.

Computer programming is known to be one of the most difficult courses for students in the first year of engineering. They are faced with the challenge of abstract thinking and gaining programming skills for the first time. These skills are acquired by continuous practicing from the start of the course. In order to enhance the motivation and dynamism of the learning and assessment processes, we have proposed the use of three educational resources namely screencasts, self-assessment questionnaires and automated grading of assignments. These resources have been made available in Moodle which is a Learning Management System widely used in education environments and adopted by the Telecommunications Engineering School at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). Both teachers and students can enhance the learning and assessment processes through the use of new educational activities such as self-assessment questionnaires and automated grading of assignments. On the other hand, multimedia resources such as screencasts can guide students in complex topics. The resources proposed allow teachers to improve their tutorial actions since they provide immediate feedback and comments to students without the enormous effort of manual correction and evaluation by teachers specially taking into account the large number of students enrolled in the course. In this paper we present the case study where three proposed educational resources were applied. We describe the special features of the course and explain why the use of these resources can both enhance the students? motivation and improve the teaching and learning processes. Our research work was carried out on students attending the "Computer programming" course offered in the first year of a Telecommunications Engineering degree at UPM. This course is mandatory and has more than 450 enrolled students. Our purpose is to encourage the motivation and dynamism of the learning and assessment processes.

This paper describes a preprocessing module for improving the performance of a Spanish into Spanish Sign Language (Lengua de Signos Espanola: LSE) translation system when dealing with sparse training data. This preprocessing module replaces Spanish words with associated tags. The list with Spanish words (vocabulary) and associated tags used by this module is computed automatically considering those signs that show the highest probability of being the translation of every Spanish word. This automatic tag extraction has been compared to a manual strategy achieving almost the same improvement. In this analysis, several alternatives for dealing with non-relevant words have been studied. Non-relevant words are Spanish words not assigned to any sign. The preprocessing module has been incorporated into two well-known statistical translation architectures: a phrase-based system and a Statistical Finite State Transducer (SFST). This system has been developed for a specific application domain: the renewal of Identity Documents and Driver's License. In order to evaluate the system a parallel corpus made up of 4080 Spanish sentences and their LSE translation has been used. The evaluation results revealed a significant performance improvement when including this preprocessing module. In the phrase-based system, the proposed module has given rise to an increase in BLEU (Bilingual Evaluation Understudy) from 73.8% to 81.0% and an increase in the human evaluation score from 0.64 to 0.83. In the case of SFST, BLEU increased from 70.6% to 78.4% and the human evaluation score from 0.65 to 0.82.

El objetivo de este proyecto de investigación es analizar el conjunto de las diez series temporales, relativas a los precios de diez metales (plata, aluminio, oro, cobre, níquel, paladio, plomo, platino, estaño y zinc), comprendidos en el periodo de enero de 2008 a septiembre de 2013, con el objetivo de reducir la dimensionalidad del conjunto de datos y facilitar la comparación de los mismos y la predicción de valores futuros. Para ello pretendemos aplicar una metodología, que nos permitirá deducir, a partir de una serie resumen y de unos coeficientes multiplicativos, la evolución del comportamiento de cualquier otro metal. Pese a la escasísima documentación existente al respecto, se valorará e intentará aplicarse una reciente metodología denominada “Metodología del haz de rectas” Como herramienta de trabajo para los programas informáticos desarrollados y para representar las gráficas asociadas al proyecto, se utilizó Matlab®, habida cuenta de su enorme potencia y por disponer de un lenguaje de programación sencillo y lo suficientemente versátil para las tareas que necesitamos. El objetivo de esta Tesis ha sido la consecución de simulaciones en tiempo real de vehículos industriales modelizados como sistemas multicuerpo complejos formados por sólidos rígidos. Para el desarrollo de un programa de simulación deben considerarse cuatro aspectos fundamentales: la modelización del sistema multicuerpo (tipos de coordenadas, pares ideales o impuestos mediante fuerzas), la formulación a utilizar para plantear las ecuaciones diferenciales del movimiento (coordenadas dependientes o independientes, métodos globales o topológicos, forma de imponer las ecuaciones de restricción), el método de integración numérica para resolver estas ecuaciones en el tiempo (integradores explícitos o implícitos) y finalmente los detalles de la implementación realizada (lenguaje de programación, librerías matemáticas, técnicas de paralelización). Estas cuatro etapas están interrelacionadas entre sí y todas han formado parte de este trabajo. Desde la generación de modelos de una furgoneta y de camión con semirremolque, el uso de tres formulaciones dinámicas diferentes, la integración de las ecuaciones diferenciales del movimiento mediante métodos explícitos e implícitos, hasta el uso de funciones BLAS, de técnicas de matrices sparse y la introducción de paralelización para utilizar los distintos núcleos del procesador. El trabajo presentado en esta Tesis ha sido organizado en 8 capítulos, dedicándose el primero de ellos a la Introducción. En el Capítulo 2 se presentan dos formulaciones semirrecursivas diferentes, de las cuales la primera está basada en una doble transformación de velocidades, obteniéndose las ecuaciones diferenciales del movimiento en función de las aceleraciones relativas independientes. La integración numérica de estas ecuaciones se ha realizado con el método de Runge-Kutta explícito de cuarto orden. La segunda formulación está basada en coordenadas relativas dependientes, imponiendo las restricciones por medio de penalizadores en posición y corrigiendo las velocidades y aceleraciones mediante métodos de proyección. En este segundo caso la integración de las ecuaciones del movimiento se ha llevado a cabo mediante el integrador implícito HHT (Hilber, Hughes and Taylor), perteneciente a la familia de integradores estructurales de Newmark. En el Capítulo 3 se introduce la tercera formulación utilizada en esta Tesis. En este caso las uniones entre los sólidos del sistema se ha realizado mediante uniones flexibles, lo que obliga a imponer los pares por medio de fuerzas. Este tipo de uniones impide trabajar con coordenadas relativas, por lo que la posición del sistema y el planteamiento de las ecuaciones del movimiento se ha realizado utilizando coordenadas Cartesianas y parámetros de Euler. En esta formulación global se introducen las restricciones mediante fuerzas (con un planteamiento similar al de los penalizadores) y la estabilización del proceso de integración numérica se realiza también mediante proyecciones de velocidades y aceleraciones. En el Capítulo 4 se presenta una revisión de las principales herramientas y estrategias utilizadas para aumentar la eficiencia de las implementaciones de los distintos algoritmos. En primer lugar se incluye una serie de consideraciones básicas para aumentar la eficiencia numérica de las implementaciones. A continuación se mencionan las principales características de los analizadores de códigos utilizados y también las librerías matemáticas utilizadas para resolver los problemas de álgebra lineal tanto con matrices densas como sparse. Por último se desarrolla con un cierto detalle el tema de la paralelización en los actuales procesadores de varios núcleos, describiendo para ello el patrón empleado y las características más importantes de las dos herramientas propuestas, OpenMP y las TBB de Intel. Hay que señalar que las características de los sistemas multicuerpo problemas de pequeño tamaño, frecuente uso de la recursividad, y repetición intensiva en el tiempo de los cálculos con fuerte dependencia de los resultados anteriores dificultan extraordinariamente el uso de técnicas de paralelización frente a otras áreas de la mecánica computacional, tales como por ejemplo el cálculo por elementos finitos. Basándose en los conceptos mencionados en el Capítulo 4, el Capítulo 5 está dividido en tres secciones, una para cada formulación propuesta en esta Tesis. En cada una de estas secciones se describen los detalles de cómo se han realizado las distintas implementaciones propuestas para cada algoritmo y qué herramientas se han utilizado para ello. En la primera sección se muestra el uso de librerías numéricas para matrices densas y sparse en la formulación topológica semirrecursiva basada en la doble transformación de velocidades. En la segunda se describe la utilización de paralelización mediante OpenMP y TBB en la formulación semirrecursiva con penalizadores y proyecciones. Por último, se describe el uso de técnicas de matrices sparse y paralelización en la formulación global con uniones flexibles y parámetros de Euler. El Capítulo 6 describe los resultados alcanzados mediante las formulaciones e implementaciones descritas previamente. Este capítulo comienza con una descripción de la modelización y topología de los dos vehículos estudiados. El primer modelo es un vehículo de dos ejes del tipo chasis-cabina o furgoneta, perteneciente a la gama de vehículos de carga medianos. El segundo es un vehículo de cinco ejes que responde al modelo de un camión o cabina con semirremolque, perteneciente a la categoría de vehículos industriales pesados. En este capítulo además se realiza un estudio comparativo entre las simulaciones de estos vehículos con cada una de las formulaciones utilizadas y se presentan de modo cuantitativo los efectos de las mejoras alcanzadas con las distintas estrategias propuestas en esta Tesis. Con objeto de extraer conclusiones más fácilmente y para evaluar de un modo más objetivo las mejoras introducidas en la Tesis, todos los resultados de este capítulo se han obtenido con el mismo computador, que era el top de la gama Intel Xeon en 2007, pero que hoy día está ya algo obsoleto. Por último los Capítulos 7 y 8 están dedicados a las conclusiones finales y las futuras líneas de investigación que pueden derivar del trabajo realizado en esta Tesis. Los objetivos de realizar simulaciones en tiempo real de vehículos industriales de gran complejidad han sido alcanzados con varias de las formulaciones e implementaciones desarrolladas. ABSTRACT The objective of this Dissertation has been the achievement of real time simulations of industrial vehicles modeled as complex multibody systems made up by rigid bodies. For the development of a simulation program, four main aspects must be considered: the modeling of the multibody system (types of coordinates, ideal joints or imposed by means of forces), the formulation to be used to set the differential equations of motion (dependent or independent coordinates, global or topological methods, ways to impose constraints equations), the method of numerical integration to solve these equations in time (explicit or implicit integrators) and the details of the implementation carried out (programming language, mathematical libraries, parallelization techniques). These four stages are interrelated and all of them are part of this work. They involve the generation of models for a van and a semitrailer truck, the use of three different dynamic formulations, the integration of differential equations of motion through explicit and implicit methods, the use of BLAS functions and sparse matrix techniques, and the introduction of parallelization to use the different processor cores. The work presented in this Dissertation has been structured in eight chapters, the first of them being the Introduction. In Chapter 2, two different semi-recursive formulations are shown, of which the first one is based on a double velocity transformation, thus getting the differential equations of motion as a function of the independent relative accelerations. The numerical integration of these equations has been made with the Runge-Kutta explicit method of fourth order. The second formulation is based on dependent relative coordinates, imposing the constraints by means of position penalty coefficients and correcting the velocities and accelerations by projection methods. In this second case, the integration of the motion equations has been carried out by means of the HHT implicit integrator (Hilber, Hughes and Taylor), which belongs to the Newmark structural integrators family. In Chapter 3, the third formulation used in this Dissertation is presented. In this case, the joints between the bodies of the system have been considered as flexible joints, with forces used to impose the joint conditions. This kind of union hinders to work with relative coordinates, so the position of the system bodies and the setting of the equations of motion have been carried out using Cartesian coordinates and Euler parameters. In this global formulation, constraints are introduced through forces (with a similar approach to the penalty coefficients) are presented. The stabilization of the numerical integration is carried out also by velocity and accelerations projections. In Chapter 4, a revision of the main computer tools and strategies used to increase the efficiency of the implementations of the algorithms is presented. First of all, some basic considerations to increase the numerical efficiency of the implementations are included. Then the main characteristics of the code’ analyzers used and also the mathematical libraries used to solve linear algebra problems (both with dense and sparse matrices) are mentioned. Finally, the topic of parallelization in current multicore processors is developed thoroughly. For that, the pattern used and the most important characteristics of the tools proposed, OpenMP and Intel TBB, are described. It needs to be highlighted that the characteristics of multibody systems small size problems, frequent recursion use and intensive repetition along the time of the calculation with high dependencies of the previous results complicate extraordinarily the use of parallelization techniques against other computational mechanics areas, as the finite elements computation. Based on the concepts mentioned in Chapter 4, Chapter 5 is divided into three sections, one for each formulation proposed in this Dissertation. In each one of these sections, the details of how these different proposed implementations have been made for each algorithm and which tools have been used are described. In the first section, it is shown the use of numerical libraries for dense and sparse matrices in the semirecursive topological formulation based in the double velocity transformation. In the second one, the use of parallelization by means OpenMP and TBB is depicted in the semi-recursive formulation with penalization and projections. Lastly, the use of sparse matrices and parallelization techniques is described in the global formulation with flexible joints and Euler parameters. Chapter 6 depicts the achieved results through the formulations and implementations previously described. This chapter starts with a description of the modeling and topology of the two vehicles studied. The first model is a two-axle chassis-cabin or van like vehicle, which belongs to the range of medium charge vehicles. The second one is a five-axle vehicle belonging to the truck or cabin semi-trailer model, belonging to the heavy industrial vehicles category. In this chapter, a comparative study is done between the simulations of these vehicles with each one of the formulations used and the improvements achieved are presented in a quantitative way with the different strategies proposed in this Dissertation. With the aim of deducing the conclusions more easily and to evaluate in a more objective way the improvements introduced in the Dissertation, all the results of this chapter have been obtained with the same computer, which was the top one among the Intel Xeon range in 2007, but which is rather obsolete today. Finally, Chapters 7 and 8 are dedicated to the final conclusions and the future research projects that can be derived from the work presented in this Dissertation. The objectives of doing real time simulations in high complex industrial vehicles have been achieved with the formulations and implementations developed.

El objetivo de este proyecto de investigación es comparar dos técnicas matemáticas de aproximación polinómica, las aproximaciones según el criterio de mínimos cuadrados y las aproximaciones uniformes (“minimax”). Se describen tanto el mercado actual del cobre, con sus fluctuaciones a lo largo del tiempo, como los distintos modelos matemáticos y programas informáticos disponibles. Como herramienta informática se ha seleccionado Matlab®, cuya biblioteca matemática es muy amplia y de uso muy extendido y cuyo lenguaje de programación es suficientemente potente para desarrollar los programas que se necesiten. Se han obtenido diferentes polinomios de aproximación sobre una muestra (serie histórica) que recoge la variación del precio del cobre en los últimos años. Se ha analizado la serie histórica completa y dos tramos significativos de ella. Los resultados obtenidos incluyen valores de interés para otros proyectos. Abstract The aim of this research project is to compare two mathematical models for estimating polynomial approximation, the approximations according to the criterion of least squares approximations uniform (“Minimax”). Describes both the copper current market, fluctuating over time as different computer programs and mathematical models available. As a modeling tool is selected main Matlab® which math library is the largest and most widely used programming language and which is powerful enough to allow you to develop programs that are needed. We have obtained different approximating polynomials, applying mathematical methods chosen, a sample (historical series) which indicates the fluctuation in copper prices in last years. We analyzed the complete historical series and two significant sections of it. The results include values that we consider relevant to other projects

The main purpose of this work is to describe the case of an online Java Programming course for engineering students to learn computer programming and to practice other non-technicalabilities: online training, self-assessment, teamwork and use of foreign languages. It is important that students develop confidence and competence in these skills, which will be required later in their professional tasks and/or in other engineering courses (life-long learning). Furthermore, this paper presents the pedagogical methodology, the results drawn from this experience and an objective performance comparison with another conventional (face-to-face) Java course.

This paper presents a novel tablet based end-user interface for industrial robot programming (called Hammer). This application makes easier to program tasks for industrial robots like polishing, milling or grinding. It is based on the Scratch programming language, but specifically design and created for Android OS. It is a visual programming concept that allows non-skilled programmer operators to create programs. The application also allows to monitor the tasks while it is being executed by overlapping real time information through augmented reality. The application includes a teach pendant screen that can be customized according to the operator needs at every moment.

Este proyecto consiste en el diseño e implementación de un procesador digital de efectos de audio en tiempo real orientado a instrumentos eléctricos tales como guitarras, bajos, teclados, etc. El procesador está basado en la tarjeta Raspberry Pi B+, ordenador de placa reducida de bajo coste, desarrollado en Reino unido y cuyo lanzamiento tuvo lugar en el año 2012. En primer lugar, ha sido necesario lograr que la tarjeta asuma la funcionalidad de un procesador de audio en tiempo real. Para ello se ha instalado un sistema operativo Linux orientado a Raspberry (Raspbian) y se ha hecho uso de Pure Data (Pd): lenguaje de programación gráfico que fue desarrollado en los años 90 por Miller Puckette con intención de ser enfocado a la creación de eventos multimedia y de música por computador. El papel que desempeña Pd es de capa intermedia entre el hardware y el software ya que se encarga de tomar bloques de N muestras del convertidor analógico/digital y encaminarlas a través del flujo de señal diseñado gráficamente. En segundo lugar, se han implementado diferentes efectos de audio de distintas características. Así pues, se encuentran efectos basados en retardos, filtros digitales y procesadores de dinámica. Concretamente, los efectos implementados son los siguientes: delay, flanger, vibrato, reverberador de Schroeder, filtros (paso bajo, paso alto y paso banda), ecualizador paramétrico y compresor y expansor de dinámica. Estos efectos han sido implementados en lenguaje C de acuerdo con la API de Pd. Con esto se ha conseguido obtener un objeto por cada efecto, el cual es “instanciado” en Pd pudiendo ejecutarlo en tiempo real. En este proyecto se expone la problemática que supone cada paso del diseño proponiendo soluciones válidas. Además se incluye una guía paso a paso para configurar la tarjeta y lograr realizar un bypass de señal y un efecto simple partiendo desde cero. ABSTRACT. This project involves the design and implementation of a digital real-time audio processor for electrical instruments (guitars, basses, keyboards, etc.). The processor is based on the Raspberry Pi B + card: low cost computer, developed in UK in 2012. First, it was necessary to make the cards assume the functionality of a real time audio processor. A Linux operating system called Raspberry (Raspbian) was installed. In this Project is used Pure Data (Pd): a graphical programming language developed in the 90s by Miller Puckette intending to be focused on creating multimedia and computer music events. The role of Pd is an intermediate layer between the hardware and the software. It is responsible for taking blocks of N samples of the analog/digital converter and route it through the signal flow. Secondly, it is necessary to implemented the different audio effects. There are delays based effects, digital filter and dynamics effects. Specifically, the implemented effects are: delay, flanger, vibrato, Schroeder reverb, filters (lowpass, highpass and bandpass), parametric equalizer and compressor and expander dynamics. These effects have been implemented in C language according to the Pd API. As a result, it has been obtained an object for each effect, which is instantiated in Pd. In this Project, the problems of every step are exposed with his corresponding solution. It is inlcuded a step-by-step guide to configure the card and achieve perform a bypass signal process and a simple effect.

In recent decades, full electric and hybrid electric vehicles have emerged as an alternative to conventional cars due to a range of factors, including environmental and economic aspects. These vehicles are the result of considerable efforts to seek ways of reducing the use of fossil fuel for vehicle propulsion. Sophisticated technologies such as hybrid and electric powertrains require careful study and optimization. Mathematical models play a key role at this point. Currently, many advanced mathematical analysis tools, as well as computer applications have been built for vehicle simulation purposes. Given the great interest of hybrid and electric powertrains, along with the increasing importance of reliable computer-based models, the author decided to integrate both aspects in the research purpose of this work. Furthermore, this is one of the first final degree projects held at the ETSII (Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers) that covers the study of hybrid and electric propulsion systems. The present project is based on MBS3D 2.0, a specialized software for the dynamic simulation of multibody systems developed at the UPM Institute of Automobile Research (INSIA). Automobiles are a clear example of complex multibody systems, which are present in nearly every field of engineering. The work presented here benefits from the availability of MBS3D software. This program has proven to be a very efficient tool, with a highly developed underlying mathematical formulation. On this basis, the focus of this project is the extension of MBS3D features in order to be able to perform dynamic simulations of hybrid and electric vehicle models. This requires the joint simulation of the mechanical model of the vehicle, together with the model of the hybrid or electric powertrain. These sub-models belong to completely different physical domains. In fact the powertrain consists of energy storage systems, electrical machines and power electronics, connected to purely mechanical components (wheels, suspension, transmission, clutch…). The challenge today is to create a global vehicle model that is valid for computer simulation. Therefore, the main goal of this project is to apply co-simulation methodologies to a comprehensive model of an electric vehicle, where sub-models from different areas of engineering are coupled. The created electric vehicle (EV) model consists of a separately excited DC electric motor, a Li-ion battery pack, a DC/DC chopper converter and a multibody vehicle model. Co-simulation techniques allow car designers to simulate complex vehicle architectures and behaviors, which are usually difficult to implement in a real environment due to safety and/or economic reasons. In addition, multi-domain computational models help to detect the effects of different driving patterns and parameters and improve the models in a fast and effective way. Automotive designers can greatly benefit from a multidisciplinary approach of new hybrid and electric vehicles. In this case, the global electric vehicle model includes an electrical subsystem and a mechanical subsystem. The electrical subsystem consists of three basic components: electric motor, battery pack and power converter. A modular representation is used for building the dynamic model of the vehicle drivetrain. This means that every component of the drivetrain (submodule) is modeled separately and has its own general dynamic model, with clearly defined inputs and outputs. Then, all the particular submodules are assembled according to the drivetrain configuration and, in this way, the power flow across the components is completely determined. Dynamic models of electrical components are often based on equivalent circuits, where Kirchhoff’s voltage and current laws are applied to draw the algebraic and differential equations. Here, Randles circuit is used for dynamic modeling of the battery and the electric motor is modeled through the analysis of the equivalent circuit of a separately excited DC motor, where the power converter is included. The mechanical subsystem is defined by MBS3D equations. These equations consider the position, velocity and acceleration of all the bodies comprising the vehicle multibody system. MBS3D 2.0 is entirely written in MATLAB and the structure of the program has been thoroughly studied and understood by the author. MBS3D software is adapted according to the requirements of the applied co-simulation method. Some of the core functions are modified, such as integrator and graphics, and several auxiliary functions are added in order to compute the mathematical model of the electrical components. By coupling and co-simulating both subsystems, it is possible to evaluate the dynamic interaction among all the components of the drivetrain. ‘Tight-coupling’ method is used to cosimulate the sub-models. This approach integrates all subsystems simultaneously and the results of the integration are exchanged by function-call. This means that the integration is done jointly for the mechanical and the electrical subsystem, under a single integrator and then, the speed of integration is determined by the slower subsystem. Simulations are then used to show the performance of the developed EV model. However, this project focuses more on the validation of the computational and mathematical tool for electric and hybrid vehicle simulation. For this purpose, a detailed study and comparison of different integrators within the MATLAB environment is done. Consequently, the main efforts are directed towards the implementation of co-simulation techniques in MBS3D software. In this regard, it is not intended to create an extremely precise EV model in terms of real vehicle performance, although an acceptable level of accuracy is achieved. The gap between the EV model and the real system is filled, in a way, by introducing the gas and brake pedals input, which reflects the actual driver behavior. This input is included directly in the differential equations of the model, and determines the amount of current provided to the electric motor. For a separately excited DC motor, the rotor current is proportional to the traction torque delivered to the car wheels. Therefore, as it occurs in the case of real vehicle models, the propulsion torque in the mathematical model is controlled through acceleration and brake pedal commands. The designed transmission system also includes a reduction gear that adapts the torque coming for the motor drive and transfers it. The main contribution of this project is, therefore, the implementation of a new calculation path for the wheel torques, based on performance characteristics and outputs of the electric powertrain model. Originally, the wheel traction and braking torques were input to MBS3D through a vector directly computed by the user in a MATLAB script. Now, they are calculated as a function of the motor current which, in turn, depends on the current provided by the battery pack across the DC/DC chopper converter. The motor and battery currents and voltages are the solutions of the electrical ODE (Ordinary Differential Equation) system coupled to the multibody system. Simultaneously, the outputs of MBS3D model are the position, velocity and acceleration of the vehicle at all times. The motor shaft speed is computed from the output vehicle speed considering the wheel radius, the gear reduction ratio and the transmission efficiency. This motor shaft speed, somehow available from MBS3D model, is then introduced in the differential equations corresponding to the electrical subsystem. In this way, MBS3D and the electrical powertrain model are interconnected and both subsystems exchange values resulting as expected with tight-coupling approach.When programming mathematical models of complex systems, code optimization is a key step in the process. A way to improve the overall performance of the integration, making use of C/C++ as an alternative programming language, is described and implemented. Although this entails a higher computational burden, it leads to important advantages regarding cosimulation speed and stability. In order to do this, it is necessary to integrate MATLAB with another integrated development environment (IDE), where C/C++ code can be generated and executed. In this project, C/C++ files are programmed in Microsoft Visual Studio and the interface between both IDEs is created by building C/C++ MEX file functions. These programs contain functions or subroutines that can be dynamically linked and executed from MATLAB. This process achieves reductions in simulation time up to two orders of magnitude. The tests performed with different integrators, also reveal the stiff character of the differential equations corresponding to the electrical subsystem, and allow the improvement of the cosimulation process. When varying the parameters of the integration and/or the initial conditions of the problem, the solutions of the system of equations show better dynamic response and stability, depending on the integrator used. Several integrators, with variable and non-variable step-size, and for stiff and non-stiff problems are applied to the coupled ODE system. Then, the results are analyzed, compared and discussed. From all the above, the project can be divided into four main parts: 1. Creation of the equation-based electric vehicle model; 2. Programming, simulation and adjustment of the electric vehicle model; 3. Application of co-simulation methodologies to MBS3D and the electric powertrain subsystem; and 4. Code optimization and study of different integrators. Additionally, in order to deeply understand the context of the project, the first chapters include an introduction to basic vehicle dynamics, current classification of hybrid and electric vehicles and an explanation of the involved technologies such as brake energy regeneration, electric and non-electric propulsion systems for EVs and HEVs (hybrid electric vehicles) and their control strategies. Later, the problem of dynamic modeling of hybrid and electric vehicles is discussed. The integrated development environment and the simulation tool are also briefly described. The core chapters include an explanation of the major co-simulation methodologies and how they have been programmed and applied to the electric powertrain model together with the multibody system dynamic model. Finally, the last chapters summarize the main results and conclusions of the project and propose further research topics. In conclusion, co-simulation methodologies are applicable within the integrated development environments MATLAB and Visual Studio, and the simulation tool MBS3D 2.0, where equation-based models of multidisciplinary subsystems, consisting of mechanical and electrical components, are coupled and integrated in a very efficient way.

The technique of Abstract Interpretation has allowed the development of very sophisticated global program analyses which are at the same time provably correct and practical. We present in a tutorial fashion a novel program development framework which uses abstract interpretation as a fundamental tool. The framework uses modular, incremental abstract interpretation to obtain information about the program. This information is used to validate programs, to detect bugs with respect to partial specifications written using assertions (in the program itself and/or in system libraries), to generate and simplify run-time tests, and to perform high-level program transformations such as multiple abstract specialization, parallelization, and resource usage control, all in a provably correct way. In the case of validation and debugging, the assertions can refer to a variety of program points such as procedure entry, procedure exit, points within procedures, or global computations. The system can reason with much richer information than, for example, traditional types. This includes data structure shape (including pointer sharing), bounds on data structure sizes, and other operational variable instantiation properties, as well as procedure-level properties such as determinacy, termination, nonfailure, and bounds on resource consumption (time or space cost). CiaoPP, the preprocessor of the Ciao multi-paradigm programming system, which implements the described functionality, will be used to illustrate the fundamental ideas.

“Teamwork” is one of the abilities most valued by employers. In [16] we describe the process of adapting to the ECTS methodologies (for ongoing assessment), a course in computer programming for students in a technical degree (Marine Engineering, UPM) not specifically dedicated to computing. As a further step in this process we have emphasized cooperative learning. For this, the students were paired and the work of each pair was evaluated via surprise tests taken and graded jointly, and constituting a substantial part of the final grade. Here we document this experience, discussing methodological aspects, describing indicators for measuring the impact of these methodologies on the educational experience, and reporting on the students’ opinion of it.

Desde los inicios de la codificación de vídeo digital hasta hoy, tanto la señal de video sin comprimir de entrada al codificador como la señal de salida descomprimida del decodificador, independientemente de su resolución, uso de submuestreo en los planos de diferencia de color, etc. han tenido siempre la característica común de utilizar 8 bits para representar cada una de las muestras. De la misma manera, los estándares de codificación de vídeo imponen trabajar internamente con estos 8 bits de precisión interna al realizar operaciones con las muestras cuando aún no se han transformado al dominio de la frecuencia. Sin embargo, el estándar H.264, en gran auge hoy en día, permite en algunos de sus perfiles orientados al mundo profesional codificar vídeo con más de 8 bits por muestra. Cuando se utilizan estos perfiles, las operaciones efectuadas sobre las muestras todavía sin transformar se realizan con la misma precisión que el número de bits del vídeo de entrada al codificador. Este aumento de precisión interna tiene el potencial de permitir unas predicciones más precisas, reduciendo el residuo a codificar y aumentando la eficiencia de codificación para una tasa binaria dada. El objetivo de este Proyecto Fin de Carrera es estudiar, utilizando las medidas de calidad visual objetiva PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio, relación señal ruido de pico) y SSIM (Structural Similarity, similaridad estructural), el efecto sobre la eficiencia de codificación y el rendimiento al trabajar con una cadena de codificación/descodificación H.264 de 10 bits en comparación con una cadena tradicional de 8 bits. Para ello se utiliza el codificador de código abierto x264, capaz de codificar video de 8 y 10 bits por muestra utilizando los perfiles High, High 10, High 4:2:2 y High 4:4:4 Predictive del estándar H.264. Debido a la ausencia de herramientas adecuadas para calcular las medidas PSNR y SSIM de vídeo con más de 8 bits por muestra y un tipo de submuestreo de planos de diferencia de color distinto al 4:2:0, como parte de este proyecto se desarrolla también una aplicación de análisis en lenguaje de programación C capaz de calcular dichas medidas a partir de dos archivos de vídeo sin comprimir en formato YUV o Y4M. ABSTRACT Since the beginning of digital video compression, the uncompressed video source used as input stream to the encoder and the uncompressed decoded output stream have both used 8 bits for representing each sample, independent of resolution, chroma subsampling scheme used, etc. In the same way, video coding standards force encoders to work internally with 8 bits of internal precision when working with samples before being transformed to the frequency domain. However, the H.264 standard allows coding video with more than 8 bits per sample in some of its professionally oriented profiles. When using these profiles, all work on samples still in the spatial domain is done with the same precision the input video has. This increase in internal precision has the potential of allowing more precise predictions, reducing the residual to be encoded, and thus increasing coding efficiency for a given bitrate. The goal of this Project is to study, using PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) and SSIM (Structural Similarity) objective video quality metrics, the effects on coding efficiency and performance caused by using an H.264 10 bit coding/decoding chain compared to a traditional 8 bit chain. In order to achieve this goal the open source x264 encoder is used, which allows encoding video with 8 and 10 bits per sample using the H.264 High, High 10, High 4:2:2 and High 4:4:4 Predictive profiles. Given that no proper tools exist for computing PSNR and SSIM values of video with more than 8 bits per sample and chroma subsampling schemes other than 4:2:0, an analysis application written in the C programming language is developed as part of this Project. This application is able to compute both metrics from two uncompressed video files in the YUV or Y4M format.

La señalización digital o digital signage es una tecnología de comunicaciones digital que se está usando en los últimos años para reemplazar a la antigua publicidad impresa. Esta tecnología mejora la presentación y promoción de los productos anunciados, así como facilita el intercambio de información gracias a su colocación en lugares públicos o al aire libre. Las aplicaciones con las que cuenta este nuevo método de publicidad son muy variadas, ya que pueden variar desde ambientes privados en empresas, hasta lugares públicos como centros comerciales. Aunque la primera y principal utilidad de la señalización digital es la publicidad para que el usuario sienta una necesidad de adquirir productos, también la posibilidad de ofrecer más información sobre determinados artículos a través de las nuevas tecnologías es muy importante en este campo. La aplicación realizada en este proyecto es el desarrollo de un programa en Adobe Flash a través de lenguaje de programación XML. A través de una pantalla táctil, el usuario de un museo puede interactivamente acceder a un menú en el que aparecen los diferentes estilos de arte en un determinado tiempo de la historia. A través de una línea de tiempo se puede acceder a información sobre cada objeto que esté expuesto en la exhibición. Además se pueden observar imágenes de los detalles más importantes del objeto que no pueden ser vistos a simple vista, ya que no está permitido manipularlos. El empleo de la pantalla interactiva sirve para el usuario de la exhibición como una herramienta extra para recabar información sobre lo que está viendo, a través de una tecnología nueva y fácil de usar para todo el mundo, ya que solo se necesita usar las propias manos. La facilidad de manejo en aplicaciones como estas es muy importante, ya que el usuario final puede no tener conocimientos tecnológicos por lo que la información debe darse claramente. Como conclusión, se puede decir que digital signage es un mercado que está en expansión y que las empresas deben invertir en el desarrollo de contenidos, ya que las tecnologías avanzan aunque el digital signage no lo haga, y este sector podría ser muy útil en un futuro no muy lejano, ya que la información que es capaz de transmitir al espectador en todos los lugares es mucho más válida y útil que la proporcionada por un simple póster impreso en una valla publicitaria. Abstract The Digital signage is a digital communications technology being used in recent years to replace the old advertising printed. This technology improves the presentation and promotion of the advertised products, and makes easy the exchange of information with its placement in public places or outdoors. The applications that account this new method of advertising are several; they can range from private rooms in companies, to public places like malls. Although the first major utility of Digital signage is the advertising that makes the user feel and need of purchasing products. In addition, the chance of providing more information about certain items through new technologies is very important in this field. The application made in this project is the development of a program in Adobe Flash via XML programming language. Through a touch-screen, a museum user can interactively access a menu in which different styles of art in a particular time in history appears. Through a timeline you can access to information about each object that is exposed on display. Also you can see pictures of the most important details of the object that can not be seen with the naked eye, since it is not allowed to manipulate it. The use of the interactive screen serves to the user exhibition as an extra tool to gather information about what is seeing through a new technology and easy to use for everyone, since only need to use one’s own hands. The ease of handling in applications such as this is very important as the end user may not have expertise technology so the information should be clearly. As conclusion, one can say digital signage is an expansion market and companies must invest in content development, as although digital technologies advance digital signage does not, and this sector could be very useful in a near future, because information that is able of transmitting the everywhere viewer is much more valid and useful than that provided by a simple printed poster on a billboard.

We present two concurrent semantics (i.e. semantics where concurrency is explicitely represented) for CC programs with atomic tells. One is based on simple partial orders of computation steps, while the other one is based on contextual nets and it is an extensión of a previous one for eventual CC programs. Both such semantics allow us to derive concurrency, dependency, and nondeterminism information for the considered languages. We prove some properties about the relation between the two semantics, and also about the relation between them and the operational semantics. Moreover, we discuss how to use the contextual net semantics in the context of CLP programs. More precisely, by interpreting concurrency as possible parallelism, our semantics can be useful for a safe parallelization of some CLP computation steps. Dually, the dependency information may also be interpreted as necessary sequentialization, thus possibly exploiting it for the task of scheduling CC programs. Moreover, our semantics is also suitable for CC programs with a new kind of atomic tell (called locally atomic tell), which checks for consistency only the constraints it depends on. Such a tell achieves a reasonable trade-off between efficiency and atomicity, since the checked constraints can be stored in a local memory and are thus easily accessible even in a distributed implementation.
