The soils factorial equation approach was used for the analisis and description of the factors of soil formation throughout a soil catena. Relief was characterized through aerial photographs, satellite images and systematic checks of transects drawn in the sense of surface runoff and also taking into account geomorphological features. Vegetation cover and land use were described and vegetation components were indified by its local names to defined vegetations indicators (VI) for the local conditions. Soils were described and classified according to soil taxonomy and valued by means of a parametric model proposed by Riquier et al, (1970) for determining the productivity index (PI). Two geomorphological landscapes were defined: Hilly and Valley with six positions within the landscapes: hilltop (round or elongated), preserved tableland summit, slopes of high, medium and low tableland and valleys between hills. Representative soils of each position were studied showing a highly advanced degree of edaphogenesis with PI values below 8% in all positions except the valleys with a PI of 13%. Land use type is based on semi intensive pasturing of introduced forage species, with a vegetation of brushwood and scattered shrubs, with some trees relicts of woods affected by timber extraction and turn to grassland Eight VI were identified, highly associated to local physical and hidrological soil conditions. The enormous impact of human activity on soils and vegetation as shown by active erosion processes and absence of wooded areas and the low productivity of livestock systems reported for the area, indicates the necessity of a reorientation of the present land use introducing alternatives like the incorporation of protective woods and agrosilvopastoral management systems.

Issues related to the transport of high level radioactive wastes (HLW) to the new centralised temporary storage facility to be built in Villar de Cañas (Cuenca) are attracting renewed attention due to the mobility expected in the near future for these materials, the commitment to the environment, the protection of persons and the legal regulatory standards. This study assesses the radiological impacts associated with this type of transport by means of a new dataprocessing tool, which may be of use and serve as documentation complementary to that included in the legal framework covering transport. Furthermore, it may facilitate analysis from a more scientific perspective for researchers, public servants and technicians in general, who may use the tool to simulate different radioactive transport scenarios based only on input materials data and the routes selected. Thus, by knowing the radiation level at a distance of one metre from the transport and selecting a route, it is possible to obtain the associated impacts, such as the affected populations, the dose received by the most exposed individual, the overall radiological impact and the doses to the public en route and the possible detriment to their health. In Spain a long “radioactive route” of more than 2,000 kilometres is expected, along which spent nuclear fuels will be transported – foreseeably by road – from the nuclear power plants to the CTS facility. The route will also be used for the vitrified wastes from fuel reprocessing of the fuel from Vandellós I nuclear power plant, which are currently in France. In conclusion, it may be observed that the emission of ionising radiations from transport of high level radioactive wastes in Spain is insignificant, in normal operations, as regards the generation of adverse effects for human health, and that the radiological impact may be considered negligible. In the event of an accident, the possibility of which is remote, the emissions will not be also a very determining factor as regards adverse effects for human health.

The determination of the Stark broadening parameters of Sn ions is useful for astrophysicists interested in the determination of the density of electrons in stellar atmospheres. In this paper, we report on the calculated values of the Stark broadening parameters for 171 lines of Sn iii arising from 4d105sns (n= 6–9), 4d105snp (n= 5, 6), 4d105p2, 4d105snd (n= 5–7), 4d105s4f and 4d105s5g. Stark linewidths and line shifts are presented for an electron density of 1023 m−3 and temperatures T= 11 000–75 000 K. These have been calculated using a semi-empirical approach, with a set of wavefunctions obtained from Hartree–Fock relativistic calculations, including core polarization effects. The results obtained have been compared with available experimental data. These can be used to consider the influence of Stark broadening effects in A-type stellar atmospheres

Transitionprobabilities and oscillatorstrengths of 176 spectral lines with astrophysical interest arising from 5d10ns (n = 7,8), 5d10np (n = 6,7), 5d10nd (n = 6,7), 5d105f, 5d105g, 5d10nh (n = 6,7,8), 5d96s2, and 5d96s6p configurations, and radiativelifetimes for 43 levels of PbIV, have been calculated. These values were obtained in intermediate coupling (IC) and using relativistic Hartree–Fock calculations including core-polarization effects. For the IC calculations, we use the standard method of least-square fitting from experimental energy levels by means of the Cowan computer code. The inclusion in these calculations of the 5d107p and 5d105f configurations has facilitated a complete assignment of the energy levels in the PbIV. Transitionprobabilities, oscillatorstrengths, and radiativelifetimes obtained are generally in good agreement with the experimental data.

Transports of radioactive wastes in Spain are becoming issues of renewed interest, due to the increased mobility of these materials which can be expected after the building and operation of the planned central repository for this country in a near future. Such types of residues will be mainly of the medium and high activity classes and have raised concerns on the safety of the operations, the radiological protection of the individuals, the compliance with the legal regulations and their environmental consequences of all kind. In this study, relevant information for the assessment of radiological risk of road transport were taken into account, as the sources and destination of the radioactive transports, the amount of traveling to be done, the preferred routes and populations affected, the characterization of the residues and containers, their corresponding testing, etc. These data were supplied by different organizations fully related with these activities, like the nuclear power stations, the companies in charge of radioactive transports, the enterprises for inspection and control of the activities, etc., as well as the government institutions which are responsible for the selection and location of the storage facility and other decisions on the nuclear policies of the country. Thus, we have developed a program for computing the data in such a form that by entering the radiation levels at one meter of the transport loads and by choosing a particular displacement, the computer application is capable to calculate the corresponding radiological effects, like the global estimated impact, its relevance to the population in general or on those people living and driving near the main road routes, the doses received by the most exposed individuals (e.g. the workers for loading or driving the vehicle), or the probability of detrimental on the human health. The results of this work could be of help for a better understanding and management of these activities and their related impacts; at the same time that the generated reports of the computer application are considered of particular interest as innovative and complementary information to the current legal documentation, which is basically required for transporting radioactive wastes in the country, according with the international safety rules (like IAEA and ADR).Though main studies are still in progress, as the definite location for the Spanish storage facility has not been decided yet, preliminary results with the existing transports of residues of medium activity indicate that the radiological impact is very low in conventional operations. Nevertheless, the management of these transports is complex and laborious, making it convenient to progress further in the analysis and quantification of this kind of events, which constitutes one of the main objectives of the present study for the radioactive road mobility in Spain.

This paper presents the 2006 Miracle team’s approaches to the Ad-Hoc and Geographical Information Retrieval tasks. A first set of runs was obtained using a set of basic components. Then, by putting together special combinations of these runs, an extended set was obtained. With respect to previous campaigns some improvements have been introduced in our system: an entity recognition prototype is integrated in our tokenization scheme, and the performance of our indexing and retrieval engine has been improved. For GeoCLEF, we tested retrieving using geo-entity and textual references separately, and then combining them with different approaches.

This paper presents the 2005 MIRACLE team’s approach to Cross-Language Geographical Retrieval (GeoCLEF). The main goal of the GeoCLEF participation of the MIRACLE team was to test the effect that geographical information retrieval techniques have on information retrieval. The baseline approach is based on the development of named entity recognition and geospatial information retrieval tools and on its combination with linguistic techniques to carry out indexing and retrieval tasks.

This paper presents the 2005 Miracle’s team approach to the Ad-Hoc Information Retrieval tasks. The goal for the experiments this year was twofold: to continue testing the effect of combination approaches on information retrieval tasks, and improving our basic processing and indexing tools, adapting them to new languages with strange encoding schemes. The starting point was a set of basic components: stemming, transforming, filtering, proper nouns extraction, paragraph extraction, and pseudo-relevance feedback. Some of these basic components were used in different combinations and order of application for document indexing and for query processing. Second-order combinations were also tested, by averaging or selective combination of the documents retrieved by different approaches for a particular query. In the multilingual track, we concentrated our work on the merging process of the results of monolingual runs to get the overall multilingual result, relying on available translations. In both cross-lingual tracks, we have used available translation resources, and in some cases we have used a combination approach.
