The price formation of the Iberian Energy Derivatives Market-the power futures market-starting in July 2006, is assessed until November 2011, through the evolution of the difference between forward and spot prices in the delivery period (“ex-post forward risk premium”) and the comparison with the forward generation costs from natural gas (“clean spark spread”). The premium tends to be positive in all existing mechanisms (futures, Over-the-Counter and auctions for catering part of the last resort supplies). Since year 2011, the values are smaller due to regulatorily recognized prices for coal power plants. The power futures are strongly correlated with European gas prices. The spreads built with prompt contracts tend also to be positive. The biggest ones are for the month contract, followed by the quarter contract and then by the year contract. Therefore, gas fired generation companies can maximize profits trading with contracts of shorter maturity.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this project is to carry out the simulation of a 700 MW supercritical coal thermal power plant with CO₂ capture to produce electricity and send it to the grid. The project describes the equipment, the installations and defines technical balances of the power plant. It shows that a CO₂ capture plant in a coal power plant is technically possible, in spite of the low power plant efficiency. In addition, it includes the economic analysis that shows the economic viability of the project, with a low profitability. This project looks into the future due to the need of reducing the pollutant emissions, which are almost as important as the generation of electricity, and demonstrates that a green energy in coal power plants is possible.

ABSTRACT The aim of this project is the economic-environmental dispatch of thermal coal power plants to minimize the hourly costs of generation or the nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions as appropriate. It have been studied both generation cost curves as nitrogen oxides emissions curves for five examples of coal power plants to carry out the project. Nitrogen oxides emissions curves were modeled for the five coal power plants simulating the coal combustion in the boiler with ASPEN PLUS® software, and generation cost curves with data provided in the publication “Las centrales termoeléctricas: Consumos marginales, Consumos medios y costes de arranque de grupos de carbón” and other publications, to be used later in the dispatch, developed in Excel, using the VBA code, to write a code that automatize the correct election between all the generation possibilities. Analizing three possible cases of thermal generation with coal, economic-environmental dispatch for the five implied power plants has been done, with all the possible combinations (generating or no generating), obtaining, in each case, the most economically or environmentally way, as appropriate, to generate the demanded power in each moment.

Climate change conference was hold in Copenhagen in 2009, global warming became the worldwide focus once again. China as a developing country has paid more attention for this environmental problem. In China, a large part of carbon dioxide is emitted to the atmosphere from combustion of fossil fuels in power plants. How to control emission of the greenhouse gas into atmosphere is becoming an urgent concern. Among numerous methods, CO2 capture is the hope to limit the amount of CO2 emitted into the air. The well-established method for CO2 capture is to remove CO2 by absorption into solutions in conventional equipment. Absorbents used for CO2 and H2S capture are important choice for CO2 capture technology. It is related to the cost and efficiency of plant directly and is essential to investigate the proposed CO2 and H2S absorbents.

The study addresses the need to manage the risk of the purchase price of coal in a power company by changing the management model of the purchasing department. It eliminates the risk of price reduces the cost of buying coal and optimizing the performance of all electricity generation plants belonging to the company. You get more flexibility and optionallity to gain additional benefits both economic and efficiency in the supply to our generation fleet. The tools to achieve the above purpose will be financial derivatives that will be used as elements of management and not as mere speculation in the markets.

In the C02 capture from power generation, the energy penalties for the capture are one of the main challenges. Nowadays, the post-combustion methods have energy penalties 10wer than the oxy combustion and pre-combustion technologies. One of the main disadvantages of the post combustion method is the fact that the capture ofC02at atmospheric pressure requires quite big equipment for the high flow rates of flue gas, and the 10w partial pressure of the CO2generates an important 10ss of energy. The A1lam cyc1e presented for NETPOWER gives high efficiencies in the power production and 10w energy penalties. A simulation of this cyc1e is made together with a simulation of power plants with pre-combustion and post-combustion capture and without capture for natural gas and forcoa1. The simulations give 10wer efficiencies than the proposed for NETPOWER For natural gas the efficiency is 52% instead of the 59% presented, and 33% instead of51% in the case of using coal as fuel. Are brought to light problems in the CO2compressor due the high flow ofC02that is compressed unti1300 bar to be recyc1ed into the combustor.

The self-ignition of all kind of powdery substances is a topic studied over the years, especially if the dusty substance is coal or substances related with coal because it may be a cause of energetic materials and human losses. But it is important to note that this is not the only risk in industrial plants that generate or store solid substances. Every combustible powders are potentially explosive and they may cause serious consequences if all the necessary factors are developed. Due to this potentially risk, it is essential a good characterization and knowledge of all the parameters involved in those processes.
