Global data-flow analysis of (constraint) logic programs, which is generally based on abstract interpretation [7], is reaching a comparatively high level of maturity. A natural question is whether it is time for its routine incorporation in standard compilers, something which, beyond a few experimental systems, has not happened to date. Such incorporation arguably makes good sense only if: the range of applications of global analysis is large enough to justify the additional complication in the compiler, and global analysis technology can deal with all the features of "practical" languages (e.g., the ISO-Prolog built-ins) and "scales up" for large programs. We present a tutorial overview of a number of concepts and techniques directly related to the issues above, with special emphasis on the first one. In particular, we concntrate on novel uses of global analysis during program development and debugging, rather than on the more traditional application rea of program optimization. The idea of using abstract interpretation for validation and diagnosis has been studied in the context of imperative programming [2] and also of logic programming. The latter work includes issues such as using approximations to reduce the burden posed on programmers by declarative debuggers [6, 3] and automatically generating and checking assertions [4, 5] (which includes the more traditional type checking of strongly typed languages, such as Gdel or Mercury [1, 8, 9]) We also review some solutions for scalability including modular analysis, incremental analysis, and widening. Finally, we discuss solutions for dealing with meta-predicates, side-effects, delay declarations, constraints, dynamic predicates, and other such features which may appear in practical languages. In the discussion we will draw both from the literature and from our experience and that of others in the development and use of the CIAO system analyzer. In order to emphasize the practical aspects of the solutions discussed, the presentation of several concepts will be illustrated by examples run on the CIAO system, which makes extensive use of global analysis and assertions.

Developing countries are experiencing unprecedented levels of economic growth. As a result, they will be responsible for most of the future growth in energy demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Curbing GHG emissions in developing countries has become one of the cornerstones of a future international agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC). However, setting caps for developing countries GHG emissions has encountered strong resistance in the current round of negotiations. Continued economic growth that allows poverty eradication is still the main priority for most developing countries, and caps are perceived as a constraint to future growth prospects. The development, transfer and use of low-carbon technologies have more positive connotations, and are seen as the potential path towards low-carbon development. So far, the success of the UNFCCC process in improving the levels of technology transfer (TT) to developing countries has been limited. This thesis analyses the causes for such limited success and seeks to improve on the understanding about what constitutes TT in the field of climate change, establish the factors that enable them in developing countries and determine which policies could be implemented to reinforce these factors. Despite the wide recognition of the importance of technology and knowledge transfer to developing countries in the climate change mitigation policy agenda, this issue has not received sufficient attention in academic research. Current definitions of climate change TT barely take into account the perspective of actors involved in actual climate change TT activities, while respective measurements do not bear in mind the diversity of channels through which these happen and the outputs and effects that they convey. Furthermore, the enabling factors for TT in non-BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) developing countries have been seldom investigated, and policy recommendations to improve the level and quality of TTs to developing countries have not been adapted to the specific needs of highly heterogeneous countries, commonly denominated as developing countries. This thesis contributes to enriching the climate change TT debate from the perspective of a smaller emerging economy (Chile) and by undertaking a quantitative analysis of enabling factors for TT in a large sample of developing countries. Two methodological approaches are used to study climate change TT: comparative case study analysis and quantitative analysis. Comparative case studies analyse TT processes in ten cases based in Chile, all of which share the same economic, technological and policy frameworks, thus enabling us to draw conclusions on the enabling factors and obstacles operating in TT processes. The quantitative analysis uses three methodologies principal component analysis, multiple regression analysis and cluster analysis to assess the performance of developing countries in a number of enabling factors and the relationship between these factors and indicators of TT, as well as to create groups of developing countries with similar performances. The findings of this thesis are structured to provide responses to four main research questions: What constitutes technology transfer and how does it happen? Is it possible to measure technology transfer, and what are the main challenges in doing so? Which factors enable climate change technology transfer to developing countries? And how do different developing countries perform in these enabling factors, and how can differentiated policy priorities be defined accordingly? vi Resumen Los paises en desarrollo estan experimentando niveles de crecimiento economico sin precedentes. Como consecuencia, se espera que sean responsables de la mayor parte del futuro crecimiento global en demanda energetica y emisiones de Gases de Efecto de Invernadero (GEI). Reducir las emisiones de GEI en los paises en desarrollo es por tanto uno de los pilares de un futuro acuerdo internacional en el marco de la Convencion Marco de las Naciones Unidas para el Cambio Climatico (UNFCCC). La posibilidad de compromisos vinculantes de reduccion de emisiones de GEI ha sido rechazada por los paises en desarrollo, que perciben estos limites como frenos a su desarrollo economico y a su prioridad principal de erradicacion de la pobreza. El desarrollo, transferencia y uso de tecnologias bajas en carbono tiene connotaciones mas positivas y se percibe como la via hacia un crecimiento bajo en carbono. Hasta el momento, la UNFCCC ha tenido un exito limitado en la promocion de transferencias de tecnologia (TT) a paises en desarrollo. Esta tesis analiza las causas de este resultado y busca mejorar la comprension sobre que constituye transferencia de tecnologia en el area de cambio climatico, cuales son los factores que la facilitan en paises en desarrollo y que politicas podrian implementarse para reforzar dichos factores. A pesar del extendido reconocimiento sobre la importancia de la transferencia de tecnologia a paises en desarrollo en la agenda politica de cambio climatico, esta cuestion no ha sido suficientemente atendida por la investigacion existente. Las definiciones actuales de transferencia de tecnologia relacionada con la mitigacion del cambio climatico no tienen en cuenta la diversidad de canales por las que se manifiestan o los efectos que consiguen. Los factores facilitadores de TT en paises en desarrollo no BRIC (Brasil, Rusia, India y China) apenas han sido investigados, y las recomendaciones politicas para aumentar el nivel y la calidad de la TT no se han adaptado a las necesidades especificas de paises muy heterogeneos aglutinados bajo el denominado grupo de "paises en desarrollo". Esta tesis contribuye a enriquecer el debate sobre la TT de cambio climatico con la perspectiva de una economia emergente de pequeno tamano (Chile) y el analisis cuantitativo de factores que facilitan la TT en una amplia muestra de paises en desarrollo. Se utilizan dos metodologias para el estudio de la TT a paises en desarrollo: analisis comparativo de casos de estudio y analisis cuantitativo basado en metodos multivariantes. Los casos de estudio analizan procesos de TT en diez casos basados en Chile, para derivar conclusiones sobre los factores que facilitan u obstaculizan el proceso de transferencia. El analisis cuantitativo multivariante utiliza tres metodologias: regresion multiple, analisis de componentes principales y analisis cluster. Con dichas metodologias se busca analizar el posicionamiento de diversos paises en cuanto a factores que facilitan la TT; las relaciones entre dichos factores e indicadores de transferencia tecnologica; y crear grupos de paises con caracteristicas similares que podrian beneficiarse de politicas similares para la promocion de la transferencia de tecnologia. Los resultados de la tesis se estructuran en torno a cuatro preguntas de investigacion: .Que es la transferencia de tecnologia y como ocurre?; .Es posible medir la transferencia de tecnologias de bajo carbono?; .Que factores facilitan la transferencia de tecnologias de bajo carbono a paises en desarrollo? y .Como se puede agrupar a los paises en desarrollo en funcion de sus necesidades politicas para la promocion de la transferencia de tecnologias de bajo carbono?

An important step to assess water availability is to have monthly time series representative of the current situation. In this context, a simple methodology is presented for application in large-scale studies in regions where a properly calibrated hydrologic model is not available, using the output variables simulated by regional climate models (RCMs) of the European project PRUDENCE under current climate conditions (period 19611990). The methodology compares different interpolation methods and alternatives to generate annual times series that minimise the bias with respect to observed values. The objective is to identify the best alternative to obtain bias-corrected, monthly runoff time series from the output of RCM simulations. This study uses information from 338 basins in Spain that cover the entire mainland territory and whose observed values of natural runoff have been estimated by the distributed hydrological model SIMPA. Four interpolation methods for downscaling runoff to the basin scale from 10 RCMs are compared with emphasis on the ability of each method to reproduce the observed behaviour of this variable. The alternatives consider the use of the direct runoff of the RCMs and the mean annual runoff calculated using ve functional forms of the aridity index, dened as the ratio between potential evapotranspiration and precipitation. In addition, the comparison with respect to the global runoff reference of the UNH/GRDC dataset is evaluated, as a contrast of the best estimator of current runoff on a large scale. Results show that the bias is minimised using the direct original interpolation method and the best alternative for bias correction of the monthly direct runoff time series of RCMs is the UNH/GRDC dataset, although the formula proposed by Schreiber (1904) also gives good results

Predicting statically the running time of programs has many applications ranging from task scheduling in parallel execution to proving the ability of a program to meet strict time constraints. A starting point in order to attack this problem is to infer the computational complexity of such programs (or fragments thereof). This is one of the reasons why the development of static analysis techniques for inferring cost-related properties of programs (usually upper and/or lower bounds of actual costs) has received considerable attention.

This paper presents a study of the effectiveness of global analysis in the parallelization of logic programs using strict independence. A number of well-known approximation domains are selected and tlieir usefulness for the application in hand is explained. Also, methods for using the information provided by such domains to improve parallelization are proposed. Local and global analyses are built using these domains and such analyses are embedded in a complete parallelizing compiler. Then, the performance of the domains (and the system in general) is assessed for this application through a number of experiments. We arge that the results offer significant insight into the characteristics of these domains, the demands of the application, and the tradeoffs involved.

We present a tutorial overview of Ciaopp, the Ciao system preprocessor. Ciao is a public-domain, next-generation logic programming system, which subsumes ISO-Prolog and is specifically designed to a) be highly extensible via librarles and b) support modular program analysis, debugging, and optimization. The latter tasks are performed in an integrated fashion by Ciaopp. Ciaopp uses modular, incremental abstract interpretation to infer properties of program predicates and literals, including types, variable instantiation properties (including modes), non-failure, determinacy, bounds on computational cost, bounds on sizes of terms in the program, etc. Using such analysis information, Ciaopp can find errors at compile-time in programs and/or perform partial verification. Ciaopp checks how programs cali system librarles and also any assertions present in the program or in other modules used by the program. These assertions are also used to genrate documentation automatically. Ciaopp also uses analysis information to perform program transformations and optimizations such as mltiple abstract specialization, parallelization (including granularity control), and optimization of run-time tests for properties which cannot be checked completely at compile-time. We illustrate "hands-on" the use of Ciaopp in all these tasks. By design, Ciaopp is a generic tool, which can be easily tailored to perform these and other tasks for different LP and CLP dialects.

Program validation and detection of errors is first performed statically by comparing (partial) specifications written in terms of assertions against information obtained from (global) static analysis of the program. The results of this process are expressed in the user assertion language. Assertions (or parts of assertions) which cannot be checked statically are translated into run-time tests. The framework allows the use of assertions to be optional. It also allows using very general properties in assertions, beyond the predefined set understandable by the static analyzer and including properties defined by user programs. We also report briefly on an implementation of the framework. The resulting tool generates and checks assertions for Prolog, CLP(R), and CHIP/CLP(fd) programs, and integrates compile-time and run-time checking in a uniform way. The tool allows using properties such as types, modes, non-failure, determinacy, and computational cost, and can treat modules separately, performing incremental analysis.

Finding useful sharing information between instances in object- oriented programs has been recently the focus of much research. The applications of such static analysis are multiple: by knowing which variables share in memory we can apply conventional compiler optimizations, find coarse-grained parallelism opportunities, or, more importantly,erify certain correctness aspects of programs even in the absence of annotations In this paper we introduce a framework for deriving precise sharing information based on abstract interpretation for a Java-like language. Our analysis achieves precision in various ways. The analysis is multivariant, which allows separating different contexts. We propose a combined Set Sharing + Nullity + Classes domain which captures which instances share and which ones do not or are definitively null, and which uses the classes to refine the static information when inheritance is present. Carrying the domains in a combined way facilitates the interaction among the domains in the presence of mutivariance in the analysis. We show that both the set sharing part of the domain as well as the combined domain provide more accurate information than previous work based on pair sharing domains, at reasonable cost.

The estimation of a (mono)fractal dimension corresponds to the special case where the moment order is q = 0.

The analysis of modes and natural frequencies is of primary interest in the computation of the response of bridges. In this article the transfer matrix method is applied to this problem to provide a computer code to calculate the natural frequencies and modes of bridge-like structures. The Fortran computer code is suitable for running on small computers and results are presented for a railway bridge.

The great developments that have occurred during the last few years in the finite element method and its applications has kept hidden other options for computation. The boundary integral element method now appears as a valid alternative and, in certain cases, has significant advantages. This method deals only with the boundary of the domain, while the F.E.M. analyses the whole domain. This has the following advantages: the dimensions of the problem to be studied are reduced by one, consequently simplifying the system of equations and preparation of input data. It is also possible to analyse infinite domains without discretization errors. These simplifications have the drawbacks of having to solve a full and non-symmetric matrix and some difficulties are incurred in the imposition of boundary conditions when complicated variations of the function over the boundary are assumed. In this paper a practical treatment of these problems, in particular boundary conditions imposition, has been carried out using the computer program shown below. Program SERBA solves general elastostatics problems in 2-dimensional continua using the boundary integral equation method. The boundary of the domain is discretized by line or elements over which the functions are assumed to vary linearly. Data (stresses and/or displacements) are introduced in the local co-ordinate system (element co-ordinates). Resulting stresses are obtained in local co-ordinates and displacements in a general system. The program has been written in Fortran ASCII and implemented on a 1108 Univac Computer. For 100 elements the core requirements are about 40 Kwords. Also available is a Fortran IV version (3 segments)implemented on a 21 MX Hewlett-Packard computer,using 15 Kwords.

The plant cuticle has traditionally been conceived as an independent hydrophobic layer that covers the external epidermal cell wall. Due to its complexity, the existing relationship between cuticle chemical composition and ultra-structure remains unclear to date. This study aimed to examine the link between chemical composition and structure of isolated, adaxial leaf cuticles of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and E. globulus by the gradual extraction and identification of lipid constituents (cutin and soluble lipids), coupled to spectroscopic and microscopic analyses. The soluble compounds and cutin monomers identified could not be assigned to a concrete internal cuticle ultra-structure. After cutin depolymerization, a cellulose network resembling the cell wall was observed, with different structural patterns in the regions ascribed to the cuticle proper and cuticular layer, respectively. Our results suggest that the current cuticle model should be revised, stressing the presence and major role of cell wall polysaccharides. It is concluded that the cuticle may be interpreted as a modified cell wall region which contains additional lipids. The major heterogeneity of the plant cuticle makes it difficult to establish a direct link between cuticle chemistry and structure with the existing methodologies.

Climate Change, Water Scarcity in Agriculture and the Country-Level Economic Impacts. A Multimarket Analysis. Abstract: Agriculture could be one of the most vulnerable economic sectors to the impacts of climate change in the coming decades. Considering the critical role that water plays for agricultural production, any shock in water availability will have great implications for agricultural production, land allocation, and agricultural prices. In this paper, an Agricultural Multimarket model is developed to analyze climate change impacts in developing countries, accounting for the uncertainty associated with the impacts of climate change. The model has a structure flexible enough to represent local conditions, resource availability, and market conditions. The results suggest different economic consequences of climate change depending on the specific activity, with many distributional effects across regions

El concepto tradicional de reglas de ensamblaje refleja la idea de que las especies no co-ocurren al azar sino que estn restringidos en su co-ocurrencia por la competencia interespecfica o por un filtrado ambiental. En est tesis abord la importancia de los procesos que determinan el ensamble de la comunidad en la estructuracin de los Bosques Secos en el Sur del Ecuador. Este estudio se realiz en la regin biogeogrfica Tumbesina, donde se encuentra la mayor concentracin de bosques secos tropicales bien conservados del sur de Ecuador, y que constituyen una de las reas de endemismo ms importantes del mundo. El clima se caracteriza por una estacin seca que va desde mayo a diciembre y una estacin lluviosa de enero a abril, su temperatura anual vara entre 20C y 26C y una precipitacin promedio anual entre 300 y 700 mm. Mi primer tema fue orientado a evaluar si la distribucin de los rasgos funcionales a nivel comunitario es compatible con la existencia de un filtro ambiental (filtrado del hbitat) o con la existencia de un proceso de limitacin de la semejanza funcional impuesta por la competencia inter-especfica entre 58 especies de plantas leosas repartidas en 109 parcelas (10x50m). Para ello, se analiz la distribucin de los valores de cinco rasgos funcionales (altura mxima, densidad de la madera, rea foliar especfica, tamao de la hoja y de masa de la semilla), resumida mediante varios estadsticos (rango, varianza, kurtosis y la desviacin estndar de la distribucin de distancias funcionales a la especies ms prxima) y se compar con la distribucin esperada bajo un modelo nulo con ausencia de competencia. Los resultados obtenidos apoyan que tanto el filtrado ambiental como la limitacin a la semejanza afectan el ensamble de las comunidades vegetales de los bosques secos Tumbesinos. Un segundo tema fue identificar si la diversidad funcional est condicionada por los gradientes ambientales, y en concreto si disminuye en los ambientes ms estresantes a causa del filtrado ambiental, y si por el contrario aumenta en los ambientes ms benignos donde la competencia se vuelve ms importante, teniendo en cuenta las posibles modificaciones a este patrn general a causa de las interacciones de facilitacin. Para abordar este estudio analizamos tanto las variaciones en la diversidad funcional (respecto a los de los cinco rasgos funcionales empleados en el primer captulo de la tesis) como las variaciones de diversidad filogentica a lo largo de un gradiente de estrs climtico en los bosques tumbesinos, y se contrastaron frente a las diversidades esperadas bajo un modelo de ensamblaje completamente aleatorio de la comunidad. Los anlisis mostraron que tan slo la diversidad de tamaos foliares sigui el patrn de variacin esperado, disminuyendo a medida que aument el estrs abitico mientras que ni el resto de rasgos funcionales ni la diversidad funcional multivariada ni la diversidad filogentica mostraron una variacin significativa a lo largo del gradiente ambiental. Un tercer tema fue evaluar si los procesos que organizan la estructura funcional de la comunidad operan a diferentes escalas espaciales. Para ello cartografi todos los rboles y arbustos de ms de 5 cm de dimetro en una parcela de 9 Ha de bosque seco y caracteric funcionalmente todas las especies. Dicha parcela fue dividida en subparcelas de diferente tamao, obtenindose subparcelas a seis escalas espaciales distintas. Los resultados muestran agregacin de estrategias funcionales semejantes a escalas pequeas, lo que sugiere la existencia bien de filtros ambientales actuando a escala fina o bien de procesos competitivos que igualan la estrategia ptima a dichas escalas. Finalmente con la misma informacin de la parcela permanente de 9 Ha. Nos propusimos evaluar el efecto y comportamiento de las especies respecto a la organizacin de la diversidad taxonmica, funcional y filogentica. Para ello utilic tres funciones sumario espaciales: ISAR- para el nivel taxonmico, IFDAR para el nivel funcional y IPSVAR para el nivel filogentica y las contrastamos frente a modelos nulos que describen la distribucin espacial de las especies individuales. Los resultados mostraron que en todas las escalas espaciales consideradas para ISAR, IFDAR y IPSVAR, la mayora de las especies se comportaron como neutras, es decir, que estn rodeados por la riqueza de diversidad semejante a la esperada. Sin embargo, algunas especies aparecieron como acumuladoras de diversidad funcional y filogentica, lo que sugiere su implicacin en procesos competitivos de limitacin de la semejanza. Una pequea proporcin de las especies apareci como repelente de la diversidad funcional y filogentica, lo que sugiere su implicacin en un proceso de filtrado de hbitat. En este estudio pone de relieve cmo el anlisis de las dimensiones alternativas de la biodiversidad, como la diversidad funcional y filogentica, puede ayudarnos a entender la co-ocurrencia de especies en diversos ensambles de comunidad. Todos los resultados de este estudio aportan nuevas evidencias de los procesos de ensamblaje de la comunidad de los Bosques Estacionalmente secos y como las variables ambientales y la competencia juegan un papel importante en la estructuracin de la comunidad. ABSTRACT The traditional concept of the rules assembly for species communities reflects the idea that species do not co-occur at random but are restricted in their co-occurrence by interspecific competition or an environmental filter. In this thesis, I addressed the importance of the se processes in the assembly of plant communities in the dry forests of southern Ecuador. This study was conducted in the biogeographic region of Tumbesina has the largest concentration of well-conserved tropical dry forests of southern Ecuador, and is recognized as one of the most important areas of endemism in the world. The climate is characterized by a dry season from May to December and a rainy season from January to April. The annual temperature varies between 20 C and 26 C and an average annual rainfall between 300 and 700 mm. I first assessed whether the distribution of functional traits at the level of the community is compatible with the existence of an environmental filter (imposed by habitat) or the existence of a limitation on functional similarity imposed by interspecific competition. This analysis was conducted for 58 species of woody plants spread over 109 plots of 10 x 50 m. Specifically, I compared the distribution of values of five functional traits (maximum height, wood density, specific leaf area, leaf size and mass of the seed), via selected statistical properties (range, variance, kurtosis and analyzed the standard deviation of the distribution of the closest functional species) distances and compared with a expected distribution under a null model of no competition. The results support that both environmental filtering and a limitation on trait similarity affect the assembly of plant communities in dry forests Tumbesina. My second chapter evaluated whether variation in functional diversity is conditioned by environmental gradients. In particular, I tested whether it decreases in the most stressful environments because of environmental filters, or if, on the contrary, functional diversity is greater in more benign environments where competition becomes more important (notwithstanding possible changes to this general pattern due to facilitation). To address this theme I analyzed changes in both the functional diversity (maximum height, wood density, specific leaf area, leaf size and mass of the seed) and the phylogenetic diversity, along a gradient of climatic stress in Tumbes forests. The observed patterns of variation were contrasted against the diversity expected under a completely random null model of community assembly. Only the diversity of leaf sizes followed the hypothesis decreasing in as trait variation abiotic stress increased, while the other functional traits multivariate functional diversity and phylogenetic diversity no showed significant variation along the environmental gradient. The third theme assess whether the processes that organize the functional structure of the community operate at different spatial scales. To do this I mapped all the trees and shrubs of more than 5 cm in diameter within a plot of 9 hectares of dry forest and functionally classified each species. The plot was divided into subplots of different sizes, obtaining subplots of six different spatial scales. I found aggregation of similar functional strategies at small scales, which may indicate the existence of environmental filters or competitive processes that correspond to the optimal strategy for these fine scales. Finally, with the same information from the permanent plot of 9 ha, I evaluated the effect and behavior of individual species on the organization of the taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity. The analysis comprised three spatial summary functions: ISAR- for taxonomic level analysis, IFDAR for functional level analysis, and IPSVAR for phylogenetic level analysis, in each case the pattern of diversity was contrasted against null models that randomly reallocate describe the spatial distribution of individual species and their traits. For all spatial scales considering ISAR, IFDAR and IPSVAR, most species behaved as neutral, i.e. they are surrounded by the diversity of other traits similar to that expected under a null model. However, some species appeared as accumulator of functional and phylogenetic diversity, suggesting that they may play a role in competitive processes that limiting similarity. A small proportion of the species appeared as repellent of functional and phylogenetic diversity, suggesting their involvement in a process of habitat filtering. These analysis highlights that the analysis of alternative dimensions of biodiversity, such as functional and phylogenetic diversity, can help us understand the co-occurrence of species in the assembly of biotic communities. All results of this study provide further evidence of the processes of assembly of the community of the seasonally dry forests as environmental variables and competition play an important role in structuring the community.
