The Darwin theory of evolution by natural selection is based on three principles: (a) variation; (b) inheritance; and (c) natural selection. Here, I take these principles as an excuse to review some topics related to the future research prospects in Animal Breeding. With respect to the first principle I describe two forms of variation different from mutation that are becoming increasingly important: variation in copy number and microRNAs. With respect to the second principle I comment on the possible relevance of non-mendelian inheritance, the so-called epigenetic effects, of which the genomic imprinting is the best characterized in domestic species. Regarding selection principle I emphasize the importance of selection for social traits and how this could contribute to both productivity and animal welfare. Finally, I analyse the impact of molecular biology in Animal Breeding, the achievements and limitations of quantitative trait locus and classical marker-assisted selection and the future of genomic selection

Summary 3 Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum ssp vulgare L., AABBDD, 2n=6x=42) flour has unique dough viscoelastic properties conferred by prolamins: glutenins and gliadins. Both types of proteins are cross-linked to form gluten polymers. On the basis of their mobility in SDS-PAGE, glutenins can be classified in two groups: high molecular weight glutenins (HMW-GS) and low molecular weight glutenins (LMW-GS). Genes encoding HMW-GS are located on group 1 chromosomes in three loci: Glu-A1, Glu-B1 and Glu-D1, each one encoding two polypeptides, named subunits. Allelic variation of HMW-GS is the most important determinant for bread making quality, and has been exhaustively studied at protein and DNA level. The knowledge of these proteins has substantially contributed to genetic improvement of bread quality in breeding programs. Compared to HMW-GS, LMW-GS are a much more complex family. Most genes encoded LMW-GS are located on group 1 chromosomes. Glu-A3, Glu-B3 and Glu-D3 loci are closely linked to the gliadin loci. The total gene copy number has been estimated to vary from 10–40 in hexaploid wheat. However, the exact copy number of LMW-GS genes is still unknown, mostly due to lack of efficient methods to distinguish members of this multigene family. Nomenclature of LMW-GS alleles is also unclear, and different authors can assign different alleles to the same variety increasing confusion in the study of this complex family. The use of molecular markers for the discrimination of LMW-GS genes might be very useful in breeding programs, but their wide application is not easy. The objective of this work is to gain insight into the relationship between glutenins and bread quality, and the developing of molecular markers that help in the allele classification of HMW-GS and LMW-GS. Two populations of advanced lines F4:6 were obtained from the cross ‘Tigre’ x ‘Gazul’ and ‘Fiel’ x ‘Taber’. Lines homogeneous for HMW-GS, LMW-GS and gliadins pattern were selected for quality analysis. The allele classification of HMW-GS was performed by SDS-PAGE, and then complemented by PCR analysis. A new PCR marker was developed to undoubtedly differentiate between two similar subunits from Glu-B1 locus, Bx7 and Bx7*. The allele classification of LMW-GS was initially performed by SDS-PAGE following different established nomenclatures and using standard varieties. The results were not completely concluding for Glu-B3 locus, so a molecular marker system was applied. DNA from parental lines and standard varieties was amplified using primers designed in conserved domains of LMW genes and analyzed by capillary electrophoresis. The pattern of amplification products obtained was compared among samples and related to the protein allele classification. It was possible to establish a correspondence between specific amplification products and almost all LMW alleles analyzed. With this method, the allele classification of the four parental lines was clarified. Flour quality of F4:6 advanced lines were tested by protein content, sedimentation test (SDSS) and alveograph (P, L, P/L and W). The values were analyzed in relation to the lines prolamin composition. In the ‘Fiel’ x ‘Taber’ population, Glu-A3 locus showed an influence in SDSS values. Lines carrying new allele Glu-A3b’, presented a significantly higher SDSS value than lines with Glu-A3f allele. In the ‘Tigre ’x ‘Gazul’ population, the Glu-B1 and Glu-B3 loci also showed an effect in quality parameters, in SDSS, and P and L values. Results indicated that: for SDSS and P, lines with Bx7OE+By8 were significantly better than lines with Bx17+By18; lines carrying Glu-B3ac allele had a significantly higher P values than Glu-B3ad allele values. lines with and lower L The analysis of quality parameters and amplified LMW fragments revealed a significant influence of two peaks (2-616 y 2-636) in P values. The presence of 2-636 peak gave higher P values than 2-616. These fragments had been cloned and sequenced and identified as Glu-B3 genes. The sequence analysis revealed that the molecular difference between them was some SNPs and a small deletion of 21 nucleotides that in the protein would produce an InDel of a heptapeptide in the repetitive region. In this work, the analysis of two crosses with differences in Glu-3 composition has made possible to study the influence of LMG-GS in quality parameters. Specifically, the influence of Glu-B3, the most interesting and less studied loci has been possible. The results have shown that Glu-B3 allele composition influences the alveograph parameter P (tenacity). The existence of different molecular variants of Glu-B3 alleles have been assessed by using a molecular marker method. This work supports the use of molecular approaches in the study of the very complex LMW-GS family, and validates their application in the analysis of advanced recombinant lines for quality studies.

The expected changes on rainfall in the next decades may cause significant changes of the hydroperiod of temporary wetlands and, consequently, shifts on plant community distributions. Predicting plant community responses to changes in the hydroperiod is a key issue for conservation and management of temporary wetlands. We present a predictive distribution model for Arthrocnemum macrostachyum communities in the Doñana wetland (Southern Spain). Logistic regression was used to fit the model using the number of days of inundation and the mean water height as predictors. The internal validation of the model yielded good performance measures. The model was applied to a set of expected scenarios of changes in the hydroperiod to anticipate the most likely shifts in the distribution of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum communities.

Hippocampal sclerosis is the most frequent pathology encountered in resected mesial temporal structures from patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Here, we have used stereological methods to compare the overall density of synapses and neurons between non-sclerotic and sclerotic hippocampal tissue obtained by surgical resection from patients with TLE. Specifically, we examined the possible changes in the subiculum and CA1, regions that seem to be critical for the development and/or maintenance of seizures in these patients. We found a remarkable decrease in synaptic and neuronal density in the sclerotic CA1, and while the subiculum from the sclerotic hippocampus did not display changes in synaptic density, the neuronal density was higher. Since the subiculum from the sclerotic hippocampus displays a significant increase in neuronal density, as well as a various other neurochemical changes, we propose that the apparently normal subiculum from the sclerotic hippocampus suffers profound alterations in neuronal circuits at both the molecular and synaptic level that are likely to be critical for the development or maintenance of seizure activity

The engineering careers models were diverse in Europe, and are adopting now in Spain the Bolonia process for European Universities. Separated from older Universities, that are in part technically active, Civil Engineering (Caminos, Canales y Puertos) started at end of 18th century in Spain adopting the French models of Upper Schools for state civil servants with exam at entry. After 1800 intense wars, to conserve forest regions Ingenieros de Montes appeared as Upper School, and in 1855 also the Ingenieros Agrónomos to push up related techniques and practices. Other Engineers appeared as Upper Schools but more towards private factories. These ES got all adapted Lower Schools of Ingeniero Tecnico. Recently both grew much in number and evolved, linked also to recognized Professions. Spanish society, into European Community, evolved across year 2000, in part highly well, but with severe discordances, that caused severe youth unemployment with 2008-2011 crisis. With Bolonia process high formal changes step in from 2010-11, accepted with intense adaptation. The Lower Schools are changing towards the Upper Schools, and both that have shifted since 2010-11 various 4-years careers (Grado), some included into the precedent Professions, and diverse Masters. Acceptation of them to get students has started relatively well, and will evolve, and acceptation of new grades for employment in Spain, Europe or outside will be essential. Each Grado has now quite rigid curricula and programs, MOODLE was introduced to connect pupils, some specific uses of Personal Computers are taught in each subject. Escuela de Agronomos centre, reorganized with its old name in its precedent buildings at entrance of Campus Moncloa, offers Grados of Agronomic Engineering and Science for various public and private activities for agriculture, Alimentary Engineering for alimentary activities and control, Agro-Environmental Engineering more related to environment activities, and in part Biotechnology also in laboratories in Campus Monte-Gancedo for Biotechnology of Plants and Computational Biotechnology. Curricula include Basics, Engineering, Practices, Visits, English, ?project of end of career?, Stays. Some masters will conduce to specific professional diploma, list includes now Agro-Engineering, Agro-Forestal Biotechnology, Agro and Natural Resources Economy, Complex Physical Systems, Gardening and Landscaping, Rural Genie, Phytogenetic Resources, Plant Genetic Resources, Environmental Technology for Sustainable Agriculture, Technology for Human Development and Cooperation.

Technology has changed the world, but the consequences of these changes in society have not always been well predicted. The Information Technology transformed the industrial production method. The new industry produces ideas and concepts, not objects. This change has resulted in a society dualized, most of the middle class has disappeared and the differences between high and low class have increased. The educational requirements of new innovative jobs are higher than the ones of the traditional industry, but lower in production jobs. Moreover, the number of available jobs of this type is lower than in the traditional industry, it takes less manpower, processes can be automated, mechanical tasks are learned in a short time and jobs are temporary, whose number depends on global demand. For the innovation process works, companies meet in the business districts of large cities, like New York or London, which were the first with access to telecommunications networks. This will produce synergies that improve the overall innovation process. These ideas and concepts that change the world need this production environment, which cannot be replicated, and are so important that their access is restricted to most of the world by different control mechanisms. The deploy of wireless telecommunications networks has been enormous in recent years. The client seeks to call from anywhere and to bring Internet access in his mobile phone. To achieve this, mobile operators need to put cell towers in cities, but the installation near buildings is not being easy. Just a few want to have an antenna closely because of the health problems suffered by people who already live or work near one. The effects of electromagnetism in humans are unclear and cause distrust of antennas. The digitization of content, which has been necessary to transmit Internet content, allows anyone with a computer and an Internet connection to be able to publish an album, a movie or a book. But that person can also copy the originals and send them anywhere in the world without the author's permission. In order to control the unauthorized copying, copyright is being used to change laws and include Internet censorship systems. These systems allow authors to eliminate illegal content, but may also be used to censor any information. The control of knowledge is power and using it in one way or another affects the whole planet. The problem is not technology, which is just a tool, but the way that governments and large corporations use it.

The colony shape of four yeast species growing on agar medium wasmeasured for 116 days by image analysis. Initially, all the colonies are circular, with regular edges. The loss of circularity can be quantitatively estimated by the eccentricity index, Ei, calculated as the ratio between their orthogonal vertical and horizontal diameters. Ei can increase from 1 (complete circularity) to a maximum of 1.17–1.30, depending on the species. One colony inhibits its neighbour only when it has reached a threshold area. Then, Ei of the inhibited colony increases proportionally to the area of the inhibitory colony. The initial distance between colonies affects those threshold values but not the proportionality, Ei/area; this inhibition affects the shape but not the total surface of the colony. The appearance of irregularities in the edges is associated, in all the species, not with age but with nutrient exhaustion. The edge irregularity can be quantified by the Fourier index, Fi, calculated by the minimum number of Fourier coefficients that are needed to describe the colony contour with 99% fitness. An ad hoc function has been developed in Matlab v. 7.0 to automate the computation of the Fourier coefficients. In young colonies, Fi has a value between 2 (circumference) and 3 (ellipse). These values are maintained in mature colonies of Debaryomyces, but can reach values up to 14 in Saccharomyces. All the species studied showed the inhibition of growth in facing colony edges, but only three species showed edge irregularities associated with substrate exhaustion. In this chapter, the differences between the essential ancient Asian ideology and the philosophical contemporary thought of the East are discussed, and at the same time the transcendental thought coming from the West is analysed and compared to both of them. In Chapter 2 these concepts are analysed specifically in the field of “inhabiting the domestic space” and the text fathoms the common points between Eastern and Western thought relating to the house and the garden. Chapter 3 describes the oriental landscape and garden of China as a prologue to that of Japan. This chapter starts with a brief description of the history of the garden in the East and the West and introduces the reader into the geography and changes that have taken place in China since the birth of its culture. Chapter 4 entails a brief assimilation of what has been deduced from chapters 1, 2 and 3. In this chapter the compositive and design aspects of the Chinese garden are described, aspects such as centre, limit, the element of the mountain, emptiness, water, and vision or the theatre. Chapter 5 is an introduction to the history of landscape and architecture in Japan that starts with a geographical insight into the country and with a short summary about the language, the primitive “Jomon” culture, the “Yayoi” era , the three Shogunates.and the Meiji Revolution. In the second part of chapter 5, the text describes Japanese gardens throughout history, for example the Karesansui garden, the history of Kyoto and its gardens, the garden in relationship with art and with Japanese literature or the art of Tatebana. Chapter 6 starts with a copy of the medieval text “HOJOKI” and discusses issues such as the meaning of “the hut in the nature” for Japanese culture and its relationship with the domestic space and the garden. Chapter 7 discusses the development of cities in the landscape in Chinese culture in parallel with an observation of the evolution of cities in Japanese culture and landscape. Chapter 8 is the crux of the Ph.D. research as it explains the mutual influences of landscape, urban planning, construction and architecture between Japan in China. Chapter 9 describes the Japanese urban planning since the very first urban developments and develops a study on the evolution of the Japanese cities and roads (like the Tokai-do) in the landscape. Also, it describes the reconstruction of the cities of Japan after the Second World War, the cultural vanguard movements, the economical circumstances that led to the Japan´ s economic crisis of the 90´s and the slow recovery of its economy. Also, at the end of this chapter, the text analyses the event of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 211. Chapter 10 of this Ph.D. research is composed of a number of interviews with architects and professors about architecture, nature in the domestic space, the role of the architect nowadays in addition to facts about energy and about the Great East Japan Earthquake . Finally, chapter 11 consists of a deep study concerning the current situation in the city of Tokyo and the relationship between its domestic spaces (dwellings) and gardens based on the philosophical values studied in chapters 1 and 2, aswell as the landscape values of the garden studied in chapters 3,4,5, and 6 plus the information about the cities in the landscape studied in chapters 7,8, 9 and 10. In this chapter the main goal is to study the human being, the refuge, the garden, the urban planning actions of Machizukuri, the park and the morphology and evolution of the central quarters of Tokyo and of its domestic spaces and parks seen through the statistical data provided by the Japanese government in the last decades. Also, the text provides a study on 21 cases selected and analysed through the comparison of around 800 domestic spaces designed in between 1991 and 2011 and published in “Shinkenchiku Jutakutokushu” and “GA Houses” magazines. After these study cases, a number of conclusions are developed and also a classification of the domestic garden in the center of Tokyo. The last three chapters of this Ph.D. work are divided in: the translation to English of the summary and main conclusions of chapter 11 of the research in Chapter 12, the translation to Japanese of the summary and main conclusions of chapter 11 of the research in Chapter 13, and a collection of hand-drawings done by the author about the botanical species found in the gardens of the domestic realms of Tokyo in Chapter 14.

The aim of this study is to explain the changes in the real estate prices as well as in the real estate stock market prices, using some macro-economic explanatory variables, such as the gross domestic product (GDP), the real interest rate and the unemployment rate. Several regressions have been carried out in order to express some types of incremental and absolute deflated real estate lock market indexes in terms of the macro-economic variables. The analyses are applied to the Swedish economy. The period under study is 1984-1994. Time series on monthly data are used. i.e. the number of data-points is 132. If time leads/lags are introduced in the e regressions, significant improvements in the already high correlations are achieved. The signs of the coefficients for IR, UE and GDP are all what one would expect to see from an economic point of view: those for GDP are all positive, those for both IR and UE are negative. All the regressions have high R2 values. Both markets anticipate change in the unemployment rate by 6 to 9 months, which seems reasonable because such change can be forecast quite reliably. But, on the contrary, there is no reason why they should anticipate by 3-6 months changes in the interest rate that can hardly be reliably forecast so far in advance.
