Let π : FM ! M be the bundle of linear frames of a manifold M. A basis Lijk , j < k, of diffeomorphism invariant Lagrangians on J1 (FM) was determined in [J. Muñoz Masqué, M. E. Rosado, Invariant variational problems on linear frame bundles, J. Phys. A35 (2002) 2013-2036]. The notion of a characteristic hypersurface for an arbitrary first-order PDE system on an ar- bitrary bred manifold π : P → M, is introduced and for the systems dened by the Euler-Lagrange equations of Lijk every hypersurface is shown to be characteristic. The Euler-Lagrange equations of the natural basis of Lagrangian densities Lijk on the bundle of linear frames of a manifold M which are invariant under diffeomorphisms, are shown to be an underdetermined PDEs systems such that every hypersurface of M is characteristic for such equations. This explains why these systems cannot be written in the Cauchy-Kowaleska form, although they are known to be formally integrable by using the tools of geometric theory of partial differential equations, see [J. This paper concerns the characterization as frames of some sequences in U-invariant spaces of a separable Hilbert space H where U denotes an unitary operator defined on H ; besides, the dual frames having the same form are also found. This general setting includes, in particular, shift-invariant or modulation-invariant subspaces in L2 (R), where these frames are intimately related to the generalized sampling problem. We also deal with some related perturbation problems. In so doing, we need that the unitary operator U belongs to a continuous group of unitary operators.

Although the delivery of 3D video services to households is nowadays a reality thanks to frame-compatible formats, many efforts are being made to obtain efficient methods to transmit 3D content offering a high quality of experience to the end users. In this paper, a stereoscopic video streaming scenario is considered and the perceptual impact of various strategies applicable to adaptive streaming situations are compared. Specifically, the mechanisms are based on switching between copies of the content with different coding qualities, on discarding frames of the sequence, on switching from 3D to 2D and on using asymmetric coding of the stereo views. In addition, when video freezes happen, the possibility of keeping the end-to-end latency or maintaining the continuity of the video are considered. These aspects were evaluated carrying out a subjective assessment test considering also visual discomfort issues using a methodology designed to keep as far as possible domestic viewing conditions.

According to cognitive linguistics, language has an experiential origin based on perception, sensory motor activities and our knowledge of the world. Our thought operates by establishing similarities, links and associations that enable us to talk about one thing in terms of another as shown in the example of love as a journey (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980). Metaphor and metonymy are conceptual and linguistic tools that make possible most of these cognitive operations. Since metaphor is an essential element of human communication, the discourse of specialised disciplines includes metaphorical mappings and numerous examples of metaphorical expressions, for example in economics, where business is mapped in terms of war (White, 2004; Herrera & White, 2000), electrotechnics with electrical components understood as couples (Roldán- Riejos in preparation) or in civil engineering where a bridge is conceptualized as a person (Roldán-Riejos, 2013). In this paper, the metaphors: WORKING WITH METALS IS COOKING/ TRABAJAR CON METALES ES COCINAR and METALS ARE CULINARY OBJECTS/ LOS METALES SON OBJETOS CULINARIOS are explored. The main aim is to show that the cooking metaphor is widely spread in the metallurgical domain in English and Spanish, although with different nuances in each language due to socio-cultural factors. The method adopted consists of analysing examples taken from the: Bilingual Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Metaphors and Metonymies Spanish- English/English-Spanish, a forthcoming and rigorously documented bilingual dictionary that sums up research on conceptual, linguistic and visual metaphor and metonymy in different areas of engineering (Roldán-Riejos and Molina, 2013). The present paper studies in detail English and Spanish cross-linguistic correspondences related to types of metals and processes. It is suggested that they reflect synesthetic metaphoric mappings. The exploitation of cognitive conceptual metaphor in the ESP classroom is lastly recommended.
