The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness is funding the SHERIF Research Project, which falls under the INNPACTO pr ogram. This project aims to increase the rate of the existing building refurbishment fro m the energy efficiency point of view by designing a facade system that must be an economica l, flexible and integrated solution 1 . Under this project has been performing several task s regarding the constructive characterization and energy evaluation of the therm al behaviour of facades on existing buildings . In order to perform the latter task, in which this article will focus, has been developing a survey of various buildings in the nei ghbourhood Ciudad de los Angeles, which has as main objective the comparison between the ac tual energy and light behaviour of different buildings, prior and posterior to any ref urbishment works have been undertaken. The evaluation of the actual performance of buildin gs before and after being refurbished is aimed to determine the impact of the work developed as well as learn from the work performed for future interventions.

Rotator cuff tears of the shoulder are a common cause of pain and disability. Although surgery is frequently beneficial, re-tearing of the tendons is likely to re-occur. In many cases even if the reparation is successful it will still generate discomfort, problems with mobility, as well as a sharp pain. This project is funded in the cooperation with the Hospital Clinico San Carlos de Madrid. The purpose of this work is to analyze the effect of the surgical repair and the application of different therapies, including mesenchymal stem cell therapy on the biomechanical properties (strength and stiffness) of the repaired tendon. An animal model of rotator cuff tendon reparations has been developed on laboratory rats.To obtain the mechanical response of the healthy and repaired tendons, it was necessary to develop an experimental set up to reproduce the in-vivo working conditions of the tendons (37 ºC, immersed in physiological serum), and especially the load transfer. The biomechanical properties (maximum load and stiffness) have been measured in healthy and repaired tendons. A total of 70 rats are used in this particular study. It has been found that the repaired tendon is stronger than the original on. However, the repaired tendons demonstrate less flexibility than the healthy (original) ones prior to the damage

SUMMARY Haiti is a clear priority country as a recipient of development cooperation. After the earthquake of January 12, 2010, an Inter-University Cooperation Project has been developed between the State University of Haiti and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development. The project consists of training and qualifying Haitian technicians to rebuild their country. We are currently working on the creation of a Haitian Macroseismic Scale, based on the European Macroseismic Scale 1998.For the accomplishment of this goal, a comprehensive (deep) analysis is being held, going through all the scientific and technical documentation to date, related to building types, kinds of vulnerability and degrees/ levels of damage depending on the type of building. As a case study, this has been applied to the city of Port-au-Prince.First of all, we have classified the housing typology of Port-au-Prince in different construction types, after carrying on field work in this area and keeping in mind the guidelines for self-construction and repairment of buildings published by the Ministry of Work, Transport and Communications of Haiti. (MTPTC).Regarding the study of vulnerability, besides the type of structure of the buildings, we take into account the basic habitability every human settlement should have, analyzing not only the building, but all the external environment of public spaces, infrastructures, amenities and services, which, as a whole, shape the core of each population and allow the efficient functioning of the settlement system on the inhabited territory. It is this territory, ultimately, the one that better narrows the risks when facing material vulnerability and that better ensures a healthy life for people. The studied parameters are: urban (lane width, block dimensions, layout, infrastructure...), geological (studies focusing on local effects and identification of the active faults in relation to the building) and topographical (implementation of the building on flat areas, slopes...)Finally, with all this data (information) and the registered damages related to the earthquake occurred in 2010, we create a Macroseismic Intensity Scale and a Management Plan of the vulnerability in Port-au-Prince. They will serve as a guideline for Haitians authorities in the urban planning and reconstruction, thus reducing seismic risk.

Due to the sensitive international situation caused by still-recent terrorist attacks, there is a common need to protect the safety of large spaces such as government buildings, airports and power stations. To address this problem, developments in several research fields, such as video and cognitive audio, decision support systems, human interface, computer architecture, communications networks and communications security, should be integrated with the goal of achieving advanced security systems capable of checking all of the specified requirements and spanning the gap that presently exists in the current market. This paper describes the implementation of a decision system for crisis management in infrastructural building security. Specifically, it describes the implementation of a decision system in the management of building intrusions. The positions of the unidentified persons are reported with the help of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The goal is to achieve an intelligent system capable of making the best decision in real time in order to quickly neutralise one or more intruders who threaten strategic installations. It is assumed that the intruders’ behaviour is inferred through sequences of sensors’ activations and their fusion. This article presents a general approach to selecting the optimum operation from the available neutralisation strategies based on a Minimax algorithm. The distances among different scenario elements will be used to measure the risk of the scene, so a path planning technique will be integrated in order to attain a good performance. Different actions to be executed over the elements of the scene such as moving a guard, blocking a door or turning on an alarm will be used to neutralise the crisis. This set of actions executed to stop the crisis is known as the neutralisation strategy. Finally, the system has been tested in simulations of real situations, and the results have been evaluated according to the final state of the intruders. In 86.5% of the cases, the system achieved the capture of the intruders, and in 59.25% of the cases, they were intercepted before they reached their objective.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this work is to study the photovoltaic potential in the South Campus of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. The work has been divided into three parts. The first one is focused on the calculus of the solar harvesting productivity of the South Campus. The second part is centered in the development of the complete photovoltaic system layout design, taking into account the available placement. In the third part, an economic study considering several different scenarios is carried out. In order to calculate the solar productivity, the MATLAB based software tool IESPRO together with a complementary application developed in MATLAB as well, have been used. These programs allow to obtain an accurate estimation of the generated annual energy. The land use is studied with the help of free software SketchUp. With this application, it is possible to rebuild the South Campus in 3D. This reconstruction includes: buildings and vegetation, facilitating the distribution of photovoltaic generators in all areas, to avoid shaded or unsuitable areas for the installation, and maximizing land use. All the above analysis allow determining the energy efficiency of the South Campus for two different configurations, i.e., installing solar photovoltaic arrays only on the roofs of the buildings, or installing solar photovoltaic arrays throughout the land available, including vacant lots and rooftops. The facilities final cost and the cost effectiveness are estimated by comparing the energy efficiency with the South Campus total consumption. This study is based on two different scenarios: the first one considers the solar arrays installation in the buildings roofs, and the second one includes in the layout the vacant lots and rooftops. These studies allow verifying the feasibility of the project, and provide specific information related to the advantages and drawbacks of each scenario.

A new version of the TomoRebuild data reduction software package is presented, for the reconstruction of scanning transmission ion microscopy tomography (STIMT) and particle induced X-ray emission tomography (PIXET) images. First, we present a state of the art of the reconstruction codes available for ion beam microtomography. The algorithm proposed here brings several advantages. It is a portable, multi-platform code, designed in C++ with well-separated classes for easier use and evolution. Data reduction is separated in different steps and the intermediate results may be checked if necessary. Although no additional graphic library or numerical tool is required to run the program as a command line, a user friendly interface was designed in Java, as an ImageJ plugin. All experimental and reconstruction parameters may be entered either through this plugin or directly in text format files. A simple standard format is proposed for the input of experimental data. Optional graphic applications using the ROOT interface may be used separately to display and fit energy spectra. Regarding the reconstruction process, the filtered backprojection (FBP) algorithm, already present in the previous version of the code, was optimized so that it is about 10 times as fast. In addition, Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization (MLEM) and its accelerated version Ordered Subsets Expectation Maximization (OSEM) algorithms were implemented. A detailed user guide in English is available. A reconstruction example of experimental data from a biological sample is given. It shows the capability of the code to reduce noise in the sinograms and to deal with incomplete data, which puts a new perspective on tomography using low number of projections or limited angle.

ABSTRACT Due to the state of ruin in mid-nineteenth century, the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Regla of León was subjected to a series of interventions on conservation, restoration and reconstruction that transformed it significantly. There have been several studies on the architects who took part in the restoration during the mentioned century and despite abundant documentation and research on this monument, it is surprising to note the lack of deep analysis in some of the periods. In particular, the interventions accomplished by Juan Bautista Lázaro, as chief architect of the works of the Cathedral of León, have not been documented and analysed in adequate depth, despite the outstanding recognition of his work nationally and internationally. Furthermore, up to date, only the director of this research had conducted a general research of all his architectural work. For these reasons, we felt it was appropriate to elaborate on the life and work of one of the most important architects of the restoration in Spain during that period, not only for his work itself, but also for his significant contribution to the debate on architectural interventions on heritage. He is notable for his respect to historical additions, his preference for not isolating the monuments, his interest in building systems and his continuous desire to re-cover the traditional crafts that were completely lost in the nineteenth century in Spain. The main aim of this thesis is therefore the descriptive and architectural analysis of Lázaro’s projects and interventions developed and executed for the Cathedral of León. The thesis identifies the principles and ideas that guided his work in this temple and establish the criteria for intervention in the historical and artistic heritage architecture he applied after studying its various print publications, projects and restoration works undertaken in other buildings. Accordingly, the thesis is structured in three parts: the first part where it deals Lázaro’s architectural thinking in his interventions on heritage constructions; the second one, in which analyses the projects and interventions carried out by Lazaro in the “pulchra leonina”, but this analysis is preceded by the description of Lázaro’s relationship with the Cathedral of León before taking charge of its restoration in 1892; and the third and final section, in which the study of major restoration interventions implemented by Lázaro in other buildings of Spanish architectural heritage is made. This research has used available documentation (in written or graphic form, plans or photographs) scattered in a diverse range of archives de-pendent on various civil and ecclesiastical institutions. Moreover, we could access the conservation and restoration works, currently being carried out in areas where Lázaro intervened (stained glass windows, forged iron en-closures, gates, doors, masonry, covers, etc.). It has been possible to ex-change views and opinions with the person currently in charge of the referred restoration works which has facilitated and complemented the development of this thesis. It further, it has allowed contrasting and obtaining data directly from the monument under study. Consultation of various architectural journals published in those years has also been taken into account, as well as a diversity of books and articles which concerned the buildings assessed in this work, or related to them. Also, although not with the results expected, it has been obtained the testimony of some of Lázaro’s descendants as well as descendants of the workers who operated under him. As a general conclusion, the thesis defines the general criteria that guided his professional work in the heritage for the first time. Furthermore, Juan Bautista Lázaro’s projects and interventions in the Cathedral of León are analysed in detail. Also, it has been studying in detail the Lazaro’s work in the architectural heritage. To achieve this goal, the thesis has studied not only the information from the official projects and technical reports of them, but also it has been tried to verify if the information contained in the different documents of the same project and in the drafts were related and consistent with each other. In addition, it has been attempted to per-form a comparative analysis of the execution of Lázaro’s projects and the entire projected content. This comparative study had not been done to date and this will be, therefore, one of the main contributions of this re-search. Finally, this thesis opens up three lines of investigation (that have already been discussed and partially advanced, but which fall beyond the scope of this research). These refer to the study of the evolution of the graphical representation of the plans of Leon Cathedral catalogued in this thesis, public activity of Lazaro and his concern for the defence of heritage as deputy in Parliament, municipal architect of Avila, and as diocesan architect Ávila and Toledo, and even more how its restoration actions in architectural heritage influenced his projects of new construction.
