The aim of this work is to develop an automated tool for the optimization of turbomachinery blades founded on an evolutionary strategy. This optimization scheme will serve to deal with supersonic blades cascades for application to Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) turbines. The blade geometry is defined using parameterization techniques based on B-Splines curves, that allow to have a local control of the shape. The location in space of the control points of the B-Spline curve define the design variables of the optimization problem. In the present work, the performance of the blade shape is assessed by means of fully-turbulent flow simulations performed with a CFD package, in which a look-up table method is applied to ensure an accurate thermodynamic treatment. The solver is set along with the optimization tool to determine the optimal shape of the blade. As only blade-to-blade effects are of interest in this study, quasi-3D calculations are performed, and a single-objective evolutionary strategy is applied to the optimization. As a result, a non-intrusive tool, with no need for gradients definition, is developed. The computational cost is reduced by the use of surrogate models. A Gaussian interpolation scheme (Kriging model) is applied for the estimated n-dimensional function, and a surrogate-based local optimization strategy is proved to yield an accurate way for optimization. In particular, the present optimization scheme has been applied to the re-design of a supersonic stator cascade of an axial-flow turbine. In this design exercise very strong shock waves are generated in the rear blade suction side and shock-boundary layer interaction mechanisms occur. A significant efficiency improvement as a consequence of a more uniform flow at the blade outlet section of the stator is achieved. This is also expected to provide beneficial effects on the design of a subsequent downstream rotor. The method provides an improvement to gradient-based methods and an optimized blade geometry is easily achieved using the genetic algorithm.

This paper describes a practical activity, part of the renewable energy course where the students have to build their own complete wind generation system, including blades, PM-generator, power electronics and control. After connecting the system to the electric grid the system has been tested during real wind scenarios. The paper will describe the electric part of the work surface-mounted permanent magnet machine design criteria as well as the power electronics part for the power control and the grid connection. A Kalman filter is used for the voltage phase estimation and current commands obtained in order to control active and reactive power. The connection to the grid has been done and active and reactive power has been measured in the system.

The effect of mistuning on the vibration of bladed disks has been extensively studied in the past 30 years. Most of these analysis typically cover the case of small variations of the elastic characteristics (mass and stiffness) of the blades. In this work we study the not so common case of the forced response of a stable rotor with damping mistuning. The Asymptotic Mistuning Model (AMM) is used to analyze this problem. The AMM methodology provides a simplified model that describes the effect of blade to blade damping variation, and gives precise information on the underlying mechanisms involved in the action of damping mistuning.

The interest of this study is based on the observation that some manufacturing processes of various vehicles wings, such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or blades, such as wind turbine blades, or other devices that use aerodynamic profiles, produce imperfections in the leading edge or open trailing edge with bigger thickness than original airfoil, because, for example, they are manufactured in two parts, top surface and bottom surface and subsequently joined. In this last step might appear a sliding between the top surface and the bottom surface having a small step on the leading edge or a small thickness gain can occur on the trailing edge. Normally these imperfections are corrected through a refill and/or sanding processes using many hours of manual labor. Therefore the initial objective of this research is to determine the level of influence in the aerodynamic characteristics at low Reynolds numbers (Lissaman, 1981, Carmichael, 1981, Nagamatsu and Cuche, 1981, Schmitz, 1957, Cebeci, 1989, Mueller and Batill, 1982) of these imperfections in the manufacture, and determine whether there may be a value for which it would not be necessary to correct them

Separated transitional boundary layers appear on key aeronautical processes such as the flow around wings or turbomachinery blades. The aim of this thesis is the study of these flows in representative scenarios of technological applications, gaining knowledge about phenomenology and physical processes that occur there and, developing a simple model for scaling them. To achieve this goal, experimental measurements have been carried out in a low speed facility, ensuring the flow homogeneity and a low disturbances level such that unwanted transitional mechanisms are avoided. The studied boundary layers have been developed on a flat plate, by imposing a pressure gradient by means of contoured walls. They generate an initial acceleration region followed by a deceleration zone. The initial region is designed to obtain at the beginning of the deceleration the Blasius profile, characterized by its momentum thickness, and an edge boundary layer velocity, defining the problem characteristic velocity. The deceleration region is designed to obtain a linear evolution of the edge velocity, thereby defining the characteristic length of the problem. Several experimental techniques, both intrusive (hot wire anemometry, total pressure probes) as nonintrusive (PIV and LDV anemometry, high-speed filming), have been used in order to take advantage of each of them and allow cross-validation of the results. Once the boundary layer at the deceleration beginning has been characterized, ensuring the desired integral parameters and level of disturbance, the evolution of the laminar boundary layer up to the point of separation is studied. It has been compared with integral methods, and numerical simulations. In view of the results a new model for this evolution is proposed. Downstream from the separation, the flow near to the wall is configured as a shear layer that encloses low momentum recirculating fluid. The region where the shear layer remains laminar tends to be positioned to compensate the adverse pressure gradient associated with the imposed deceleration. Under these conditions, the momentum thickness remains almost constant. This laminar shear layer region extends up to where transitional phenomena appear, extension that scales with the momentum thickness at separation. These transitional phenomena are of inviscid type, similar to those found in free shear layers. The transitional region analysis begins with a study of the disturbances evolution in the linear growth region and the comparison of experimental results with a numerical model based on Linear Stability Theory for parallel flows and with data from other authors. The results’ coalescence for both the disturbances growth and the excited frequencies is stated. For the transition final stages the vorticity concentration into vortex blobs is found, analogously to what happens in free shear layers. Unlike these, the presence of the wall and the pressure gradient make the large scale structures to move towards the wall and quickly disappear under certain circumstances. In these cases, the recirculating flow is confined into a closed region saying the bubble is closed or the boundary layer reattaches. From the reattachment point, the fluid shows a configuration in the vicinity of the wall traditionally considered as turbulent. It has been observed that existing integral methods for turbulent boundary layers do not fit well to the experimental results, due to these methods being valid only for fully developed turbulent flow. Nevertheless, it has been found that downstream from the reattachment point the velocity profiles are self-similar, and a model has been proposed for the evolution of the integral parameters of the boundary layer in this region. Finally, the phenomenon known as bubble burst is analyzed. It has been checked the validity of existing models in literature and a new one is proposed. This phenomenon is blamed to the inability of the large scale structures formed after the transition to overcome with the adverse pressure gradient, move towards the wall and close the bubble.

The numerical analysis of certain safety related problems presents serious difficulties, since the large number of components present leads to huge finite elementmodels that can only be solved by using large and expensive computers or by making rough approaches to the problem. Tangling, or clashing, in the turbine of a jet engine airplane is an example of such problems. This is caused by the crash and friction between rotor and stator blades in the turbine after an eventual shaft failure. When facing the study of an event through numerical modelling, the accurate simulation of this problem would require the engineer to model all the rotor and stator blades existing in the turbine stage, using a small element size in all pieces. Given that the number of stator and rotor blades is usually around 200, such simulations would require millions of elements. This work presents a new numerical methodology, specifically developed for the accurate modelling of the tangling problem that, depending on the turbine configuration, is able to reduce the number of nodes up to an order of magnitude without losing accuracy. The methodology, which benefits from the cyclic configuration of turbines, is successfully applied to the numerical analysis of a hypothetical tangling event in a turbine, providing valuable data such as the rotating velocity decrease of the turbine, the braking torque and the damage suffered by the blades. The methodology is somewhat general and can be applied to any problem in which damage caused by the interaction between a rotating and static piece is to be analysed.

ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to analyze the effects of airfoil trailing edges thickness when this is thicker than the airfoil nominal. Several factors may lead to an airfoil trailing edge being thicker than the nominal airfoil, and this may affect various aerodynamic parameters. This study has focus on its influence on the airfoil’s aerodynamic lift, drag and, particularly on the aerodynamic efficiency of the airfoil, that is, the relationship between the aerodynamic lift and drag. It has also been studied how this fact may alter some other aerodynamic aspects of airfoils, such as stall, angle of attack of maximum lift, angle of maximum efficiency, aerodynamic moment coefficient and aerodynamic center position. These imperfections in the trailing edge may appear in some manufacturing processes of certain aerodynamic elements, such as unmanned aircraft wings or wind turbine blades. This phenomenon has not been deeply analyzed in the literature, although several authors have discussed its influence on airfoil with truncated trailing edge, or airfoils with thickened end, used in other applications. Various types of airfoils have been analyzed, laminar and non-laminar, symmetric and curved airfoils, and airfoils with different thickness, in order to compare the degree of influence of the phenomenon studied on each airfoil type and thus, to estimate the degree of sensitivity to the anomaly geometry. The study was carried out experimentally using a test chamber designed specifically for this purpose, as well as an electronic balance to measure the forces and moments on the airfoil, and a pressure scanner to measure distribution of pressures in certain cases. It has also been investigated the behavior of airfoils with trailing edge thicker than the nominal, but rounded instead of blunt, in order to analyze the effectiveness of the trailing edge rounding, which is one of the methods that can be used to mitigate this phenomenon. Moreover, as the behavior of the airfoil is highly dependent on the Reynolds number, the study has been focused on the analysis of the behavior at low Reynolds numbers due to recent use of low Reynolds numbers airfoils in a wide range of applications, from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to low power wind turbine blades, or even due to their potential use in aircraft designed to fly in low density atmospheres as the one existing in Mars. The main purpose of this research is to establish a set of criteria for quantifying the influence that a thicker-than–nominal-trailing edge has in the degradation of maximum aerodynamic efficiency, aiming at establishing the acceptance limits for these pieces when they are manufactured, according to the type of airfoil used. Based on the results obtained from the analysis of the cases under study it can be concluded that increasing the thickness of the trailing edge, within the range of study, increases aerodynamic lift, as well as maximum lift, but the aerodynamic drag increases in a higher proportion, and consequently there is a reduction of aerodynamic efficiency, particularly, of its maximum value. On the other hand, rounding the trailing edge of the airfoil slightly helps to reduce this effect.

However, in some cases, for small defects opposite effect occurs. The maximum lift increases significantly with little loss of maximum aerodynamic efficiency.

A relation between Cost Of Energy, COE, maximum allowed tip speed, and rated wind speed, is obtained for wind turbines with a given goal rated power. The wind regime is characterised by the corresponding parameters of the probability density function of wind speed. The non-dimensional characteristics of the rotor: number of blades, the blade radial distributions of local solidity, twist angle, and airfoil type, play the role of parameters in the mentioned relation. The COE is estimated using a cost model commonly used by the designers. This cost model requires basic design data such as the rotor radius and the ratio between the hub height and the rotor radius. Certain design options, DO, related to the technology of the power plant, tower and blades are also required as inputs. The function obtained for the COE can be explored to nd those values of rotor radius that give rise to minimum cost of energy for a given wind regime as the tip speed limitation changes. The analysis reveals that iso-COE lines evolve parallel to iso-radius lines for large values of limit tip speed but that this is not the case for small values of the tip speed limits. It is concluded that, as the tip speed limit decreases, the optimum decision for keeping minimum COE values can be: a) reducing the rotor radius for places with high weibull scale parameter or b) increasing the rotor radius for places with low weibull scale parameter

Abstract Given that it’s difficult to imagine any modern society in the future where energy does not play a crucial role, and as many studies have shown that the actual rate of fuel consumption is unsustainable and harmful to life on the planet, it is essential to raise mankind’s awareness that a change in the current trend is not only necessary, but is also imperative. It is not a question of completely eradicating the use of fossil fuels, as in many countries they are the main or even the only way of generating energy, but rather working towards a balance in generation. To do so it is vital to encourage the development of clean energies, increase technological efficiency and reduce consumption. In view of this we have decided to build a small scale wind turbine rotor which can be used as a study tool for engineering students. To design the turbine a software programme was developed based on aerodynamic concepts, which allows us to calculate the geometry of the blades depending on certain initial conditions, estimate the power of the turbine, and obtain performance curves. One of the main issues with wind technology is its high variability, and therefore we implemented a speed regulation system consisting of a mechanism that varies the orientation of the blades and thus allows us to regulate the power of an electric generator attached to the turbine. Current wind powered generators use this type of system to try to smooth out spikes in power that may be caused by gusts of wind. We have used CAD software to design both the turbine itself and the speed regulation system. Most of the turbine parts have been manufactured with the aid of a 3D printer, while the other metallic parts have been turned on made a lathe in aluminum. Although the software programme which calculates the aerodynamics provide us theoretical data about the operation of the rotor. We consider it necessary to test the wind turbine in a lab to obtain more accurate results.

The stabilizing effect of grouping rotor blades in pairs has been assessed both, numerically and experimentally. The bending and torsion modes of a low aspect ratio high speed turbine cascade tested in the non-rotating test facility at EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) have been chosen as the case study. The controlled vibration of 20 blades in travelling wave form was performed by means of an electromagnetic excitation system, enabling the adjustement of the vibration amplitude and inter blade phase at a given frequency. Unsteady pressure transducers located along the blade mid-section were used to obtain the modulus and phase of the unsteady pressure caused by the airfoil motion. The stabilizing effect of the torsion mode was clearly observed both in the experiments and the simulations, however the effect of grouping the blades in pairs in the minimum damping at the tested frequency was marginal in the bending mode. A numerical tool was validated using the available experimental data and then used to extend the results at lower and more relevant reduced frequencies. It is shown that the stabilizing effect exists for the bending and torsion modes in the frequency range typical of low-pressure turbines. It is concluded that the stabilizing effect of this configuration is due to the shielding effect of the pressure side of the airfoil that defines the passage of the pair on the suction side of the same passage, since the relative motion between both is null. This effect is observed both in the experiments and simulations.

Abstract It is well known that the small imperfections of the individual blades in a turbomachinery rotor (known as “mistuning”) can cause a substantial increase of the forced response vibration amplitude, and it also typically results in an improvement of the flutter vibration characteristics of the rotor. The understanding of these phenomena can be attempted just by performing numerical simulations of the complete aeroelastic problem. However, the computation of mistuning cases using high fidelity models is a formidable task, because a detailed model of the whole rotor has to be considered, and a statistical study has to be carried out in order to properly explore the effect of the random mistuning distributions. Many reduced order models have been developed in recent years to overcome this barrier. One of these models, called the Asymptotic Mistuning Model (AMM), is systematically derived from the complete bladed disk formulation using a consistent perturbative procedure that exploits the smallness of mistuning to simplify the problem. The AMM retains only the essential system modes that are involved in the mistuning effect, and it allows to identify the key mechanisms of the amplification of the forced response amplitude and the flutter stabilization. In this work, AMM methodolgy is used to study the effect of structural and damping mistuning on the forced response vibration amplitude. The obtained results are verified using a one degree of freedom model of a rotor, and also high fidelity models of the complete rotor. The AMM is also applied, in the frame of the European FP7 project “Flutter-Free Turbomachinery Blades (FUTURE)”, to design two intentional mistuning patterns: (i) one to complete stabilize an unstable rotor, and (ii) other to approximately reduce by half its flutter amplitude. The designed patterns are validated experimentally. Finally, the ability of AMM to predict the flutter behavior of mistuned rotors is checked against numerical, high fidelity CFD results.

ABSTRACT Transforming the kinetic energy of the sea into renewable useful source electricity could be a relevant technologic development in the near future. In this field, marine horizontal axis turbines (HAT) are possibly, the most important devices. The current calculation techniques used to obtain the acting forces or loads in the marine current horizontal axis rotor blades: Actuator disc models, lifting lines and finite element method, have certain disadvantages which lead difficulties to obtain relatively quick results, in addition, these methods are not easy to understand and mastering, and furthermore, complex computing tools are required to obtain results. In the present work, the common physical and mathematic fundamentals will be studied and analyzed with the aim to create a new easier managing calculating tool. The proposed procedure of this document can be considered as a help towards to calculate preliminary solutions easier, and also a starting point to manage physical ideas which could be used with other calculation tools. And finally, the mathematic fundamentals will be explained and the implementation of the equations in a real case. Nevertheless, due to the real complexity of the problem, the assumed simplifications of this model must be taken into account, in order to know the possible calculating limitations of this procedure and consequently use it correctly.

The pararotor is a biology-inspired decelerator device based on the autorotation of a rotary wing whose main purpose is to guide a load descent into a certain atmosphere. This paper focuses on a practical approach to the general dynamic stability of a pararotor whose center of mass is displaced from the blade plane. The analytical study departs from the motion equations of pararotor flight, considering the center of mass displacement from the blade plane, studied over a number of simplifying hypotheses that allows determining the most important influences to flight behavior near equilibrium. Two practical indexes are developed to characterize the stability of a pararotor in terms of geometry, inertia, and the aerodynamic characteristics of the device. Based on these two parameters, a stability diagram can be defined upon which stability regions can be identified. It was concluded that the ability to reach stability conditions depends mainly on a limited number of parameters associated with the pararotor configuration: the relationship between moments of inertia, the position of the blades, the planform shape (associated with the blade aerodynamic coefficients and blade area), and the vertical distance between the center of mass and the blade plane. These parameters can be evaluated by computing practical indexes to determine stability behavior.

A panel method free-wake model to analyse the rotor flapping is presented. The aerodynamic model consists of a panel method, which takes into account the three-dimensional rotor geometry, and a free-wake model, to determine the wake shape. The main features of the model are the wake division into a near-wake sheet and a far wake represented by a single tip vortex, and the modification of the panel method formulation to take into account this particular wake description. The blades are considered rigid with a flap degree of freedom. The problem solution is approached using a relaxation method, which enforces periodic boundary conditions. Finally, several code validations against helicopter and wind turbine experimental data are performed, showing good agreement
