A number of short-to-mid height RC buildings with wide beams have been constructed in moderate-seismicity areas of Spain. The seismic behavior in the direction of the wide beams appears to be deficient because of low lateral strength, low ductility of the wide beams, big strut compressive forces inside the column-beam connections, and unreliable contribution of the spandrel zones of the wide beams. In the orthogonal direction, the behavior is worse since only the joists and the façade beams contribute to the lateral resistance. The objective is to assess the seismic capability of these structures; further research will involve proposing retrofit strategies. The research approach consists of selecting a number of representative buildings and evaluating their vulnerability by code-type, push-over and dynamic analyses. The cooperation of the masonry infill walls is accounted for. The main conclusion is that the seismic behavior of these buildings is inadequate in most of the situations.

A significant number of short-to-mid height RC buildings with wide beams have been constructed in areas of moderate seismicity of Spain, mainly for housing and administrative use. The buildings have a framed structure with one-way slabs; the wide beams constitute the distinctive characteristic, their depth being equal to that of the rest of the slab, thus providing a flat lower surface, convenient for construction and the layout of facilities. Seismic behavior in the direction of the wide beams appears to be deficient because of: (i) low lateral strength, mainly because of the small effective depth of the beams, (ii) inherent low ductility of the wide beams, generated by high amount of reinforcement, (iii) the big strut compressive forces developed inside the column-beam connections due to the low height of the beams, and (iv) the fact that the wide beams are wider than the columns, meaning that the contribution of the outer zones to the resistance of the beam-column joints is unreliable because there is no torsion reinforcement. In the orthogonal direction, the behavior is worse since the only members of the slabs that contribute to the lateral resistance are the joists and the façade beams. Moreover, these buildings were designed with codes that did not include ductility requirements and required only a low lateral resistance; indeed, in many cases, seismic action was not considered at all. Consequently, the seismic capacity of these structures is not reliable. The objective of this research is to assess numerically this capability, whereas further research will aim to propose retrofit strategies. The research approach consists of: (i) selecting a number of 3-story and 6-story buildings that represent the vast majority of the existing ones and (ii) evaluating their vulnerability through three types of analyses, namely: code-type, push-over and nonlinear dynamic analysis. Given the low lateral resistance of the main frames, the cooperation of the masonry infill walls is accounted for; for each representative building, three wall densities are considered. The results of the analyses show that the buildings in question exhibit inadequate seismic behavior in most of the examined situations. In general, the relative performance is less deficient for Target Drift CP (Collapse Prevention) than for IO (Immediate Occupancy). Since these buildings are selected to be representative of the vast majority of buildings with wide beams that were constructed in Spain without accounting for any seismic consideration, our conclusions can be extrapolated to a broader scenario.

Whole brain resting state connectivity is a promising biomarker that might help to obtain an early diagnosis in many neurological diseases, such as dementia. Inferring resting-state connectivity is often based on correlations, which are sensitive to indirect connections, leading to an inaccurate representation of the real backbone of the network. The precision matrix is a better representation for whole brain connectivity, as it considers only direct connections. The network structure can be estimated using the graphical lasso (GL), which achieves sparsity through l1-regularization on the precision matrix. In this paper, we propose a structural connectivity adaptive version of the GL, where weaker anatomical connections are represented as stronger penalties on the corre- sponding functional connections. We applied beamformer source reconstruction to the resting state MEG record- ings of 81 subjects, where 29 were healthy controls, 22 were single-domain amnestic Mild Cognitive Impaired (MCI), and 30 were multiple-domain amnestic MCI. An atlas-based anatomical parcellation of 66 regions was ob- tained for each subject, and time series were assigned to each of the regions. The fiber densities between the re- gions, obtained with deterministic tractography from diffusion-weighted MRI, were used to define the anatomical connectivity. Precision matrices were obtained with the region specific time series in five different frequency bands. We compared our method with the traditional GL and a functional adaptive version of the GL, in terms of log-likelihood and classification accuracies between the three groups. We conclude that introduc- ing an anatomical prior improves the expressivity of the model and, in most cases, leads to a better classification between groups.

The City of Madrid is putting into operation Intermodal Exchange Stations (IESs) to make connections between urban and suburban transportation modes easier for users of public transportation. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the actual effects that the implementation of IESs in the City of Madrid has on the affected stakeholders: users, public transportation operators, infrastructure managers, the government, the abutters and other citizens. We develop a methodology intended to help assess the welfare gains and losses for each stakeholder. Then we apply this methodology to the case study of the Avenida de América IES in the city of Madrid. We found that it is indeed possible to arrive at win–win solutions for the funding of urban transportation infrastructure, as long as the cost-benefit ratio of the project is high enough. Commuters save travel time. Bus companies diminish their costs of operation. The abutters gain in quality of life. The private operator of the infrastructure makes a fair profit. And the government is able to promote these infrastructure facilities without spending more of its scarce budgetary resources.

Many neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by malfunction of the DNA damage response. Therefore, it is important to understand the connection between system level neural network behavior and DNA. Neural networks drawn from genetically engineered animals, interfaced with micro-electrode arrays allowed us to unveil connections between networks’ system level activity properties and such genome instability. We discovered that Atm protein deficiency, which in humans leads to progressive motor impairment, leads to a reduced synchronization persistence compared to wild type synchronization, after chemically imposed DNA damage. Not only do these results suggest a role for DNA stability in neural network activity, they also establish an experimental paradigm for empirically determining the role a gene plays on the behavior of a neural network.

The architect Curro Inza (1929-1976) belongs to the group known as Madrilian organicism and the School of Madrid, whose most important works were built during the 1960 and 1970 decades. Curro Inza's work has received up until now very different, even extreme opinions, but his work has not been studied in depth, which is surprising if we consider that his architecture treats issues which are of great interest today. The present study has aimed at two objectives. The first has been to gather the information concerned with the author and his work, and to catalog all of the works of this personal archive (unpublished up until now). The work we have done here has consisted in compiling, digitalizing, classifying and cataloguing all of the documentation found in Curro Inza's personal archive; this archive has been deposited in the Biblioteca de la Escuela Superior de Artquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM) . We have also digitalized the main projects in order to assure the best storage conditions for the future. The second objective has consisted in analyzing Curro Inza's work from a project and critical point of view, an approach which has not yet been explored. Within this second objective, I have studied Inza's work, which is well defined and personal as well as complex, but which has received little attention and has not been explained. I have done a critical revision of both his projects and his writings, and have related these with other, both national and international, architectures, in order to place Inza's work within the contemporary architectural discourse. In order to decipher the essence of Inza's architecture, I have approached his work from five, simultaneous perspectives. I have described the projects critically from each of the five perspectives or categories; these five categories give shape to the organization of the dissertation. Even if the compilation and revision of Inza's archive is somehow an archaeological search, this study aims at having a larger scope than its strict, exclusive historical interest. In this study I have studied Inza's projects from a critical point of view and in relation to contemporary architecture and architectural thought, attempting to draw connections between Inza's work and modern, present architecture. We have also attempted to understand and describe Inza's language and conception of architectural discourse, as well as his origins, evolution and expression of his thought. In summary, I have analyzed and explained Curro Inza's work from a projectual point of view, drawing a critical reading of the strategies used by the author, and from which we could learn and work today.

This thesis’ hypothesis states that architectural modernity in Mexico is not, as sometimes pretended, a homogeneous history, focused on some key figures, but rather a multiple and complex narrative, in which art and print media have played an essential role. Therefore, it proposes a new perspective on 20th century architecture in Mexico analized through the relationship between architecture and photography, art, theory and media. Its aim is to link architecture and artistic movements, authors and publications, forms and manifestos. What is intended here is to explore the concepts of ‘modernity’ and ‘identity’ as part of the construction of architecture and the concept of ‘Mexicanity’. Despite the emphasis that has been given to the construction of an architectural canon —mostly related to the notions of monumentality, regionalism and mestizaje/métissage— this thesis’ approach is focused mainly in processes and not in forms. Through connections between diverse layers of information, new ways of dealing with the architectural project are explored. Brazilian architecture critic Hugo Segawa has described the research on Latin American architecture as «more a task of archaeology than of historiography». Nonetheless, he has also described Mexico as «the most vigorous center of theoretical debates in Latin America throughout the 20th century». This acute discrepancy between decay and vigor, between abundance of production and precarious state of conservation has determined not only the ways in which architecture is studied and understood but also the process of architectural creation. This work is therefore outlined as a new platform in order to reformulate the discipline as a system based on a common will to research and create, far from the existing amnesiac attitude. Following British critic Anthony Vidler, the interest relies in the attempt to ‘relate’ History to project. In order to reduce the elusiveness of an incomplete history and, specially, to understand how ideas become forms and objects, this thesis is composed of 22 timelines organized in three intersecting itineraries: Architecture, Art and Theory. Drawing inspiration from Aby Warburg’s Atlas Mnemosyne and Gabriel Orozco’s series Asterisms, new exploration devices are created. In such a way, diverse topics unfold to draw connections between built environment, utopian projects, publications, photography and publicity. This work is developed as a new tool for exploration, articulated by layers, like an evolutionary genealogy map. Its objective is to analyze not only the architecture build in cities, but produced on paper. Starting with the work of the generation that led Mexican architecture into the 20th century, this research extends until the first decade of the 21st century (the epilogue), gathering together works which have been usually seen in isolation, and therefore making possible its understanding in a broader context. As a scenario for exploration, this work tries to prompt the crossing of meanings, in the belief that new approaches on the discipline and its context are needed. Architecture in Mexico — a country whose population grew in the 20th century form 13 to 100 million— is related essentially with an anonymous production, or else made from stereotypes. However, between the sprawl of informal urban developments and landmark buildings there is an architectural production as extensive as it is unexamined. This essay introduces a series of new constellations, ranging from the Revolution in 1910 to the Olympic Games in 1968; from the earthquake in Mexico City in 1985 to the international competitions of the last decade. These myriad perspectives present buildings that were never built, forgotten writings, iconic images and unpublished material.

Abstract Networks are the substance of human communities and societies; they constitute the structural framework on which we relate to each other and determine the way we do it, the way information is diseminated or even the way people get things done. But network prominence goes beyond the importance it acquires in social networks. Networks are found within numerous known structures, from protein interactions inside a cell to router connections on the internet. Social networks are present on the internet since its beginnings, in emails for example. Inside every email client, there are contact lists that added together constitute a social network. However, it has been with the emergence of social network sites (SNS) when these kinds of web applications have reached general awareness. SNS are now among the most popular sites in the web and with the higher traffic. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter hold astonishing figures of active users, traffic and time invested into the sites. Nevertheless, SNS functionalities are not restricted to contact-oriented social networks, those that are focused on building your own list of contacts and interacting with them. There are other examples of sites that leverage social networking to foster user activity and engagement around other types of content. Examples go from early SNS such as Flickr, the photography related networking site, to Github, the most popular social network repository nowadays. It is not an accident that the popularity of these websites comes hand-in-hand with their social network capabilities The scenario is even richer, due to the fact that SNS interact with each other, sharing and exporting contact lists and authentication as well as providing a valuable channel to publize user activity in other sites. These interactions are very recent and they are still finding their way to the point where SNS overcome their condition of data silos to a stage of full interoperability between sites, in the same way email and instant messaging networks work today. This work introduces a technology that allows to rapidly build any kind of distributed social network website. It first introduces a new technique to create middleware that can provide any kind of content management feature to a popular model-view-controller (MVC) web development framework, Ruby on Rails. It provides developers with tools that allow them to abstract from the complexities related with content management and focus on the development of specific content. This same technique is also used to provide the framework with social network features. Additionally, it describes a new metric of code reuse to assert the validity of the kind of middleware that is emerging in MVC frameworks. Secondly, the characteristics of top popular SNS are analysed in order to find the common patterns shown in them. This analysis is the ground for defining the requirements of a framework for building social network websites. Next, a reference architecture for supporting the features found in the analysis is proposed. This architecture has been implemented in a software component, called Social Stream, and tested in several social networks, both contact- and content-oriented, in local neighbourhood associations and EU-founded research projects. It has also been the ground for several Master’s theses. It has been released as a free and open source software that has obtained a growing community and that is now being used beyond the scope of this work. The social architecture has enabled the definition of a new social-based access control model that overcomes some of the limitations currenly present in access control models for social networks. Furthermore, paradigms and case studies in distributed SNS have been analysed, gathering a set of features for distributed social networking. Finally the architecture of the framework has been extended to support distributed SNS capabilities. Its implementation has also been validated in EU-founded research projects.

Recent commentaries have proposed the advantages of using open exchange of data and informatics resources for improving health-related policies and patient care in Africa. Yet, in many African regions, both private medical and public health information systems are still unaffordable. Open exchange over the social Web 2.0 could encourage more altruistic support of medical initiatives. We have carried out some experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of using this approach to disseminate open data and informatics resources in Africa. After the experiments we developed the AFRICA BUILD Portal, the first Social Network for African biomedical researchers. Through the AFRICA BUILD Portal users can access in a transparent way to several resources. Currently, over 600 researchers are using distributed and open resources through this platform committed to low connections.

We report on properties of high quality ~60 nm thick InAlN layers nearly in-plane lattice-matched to GaN, grown on c-plane GaN-on-sapphire templates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Excellent crystalline quality and low surface roughness are confirmed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. High annular dark field observations reveal a periodic in-plane indium content variation (8 nm period), whereas optical measurements evidence certain residual absorption below the band-gap. The indium fluctuation is estimated to be +/- 1.2% around the nominal 17% indium content via plasmon energy oscillations assessed by electron energy loss spectroscopy with sub-nanometric spatial resolution.

III-nitride nanorods have attracted much scientific interest during the last decade because of their unique optical and electrical properties [1,2]. The high crystal quality and the absence of extended defects make them ideal candidates for the fabrication of high efficiency opto-electronic devices such as nano-photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, and solar cells [1-3]. Nitride nanorods are commonly grown in the self-assembled mode by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) [4]. However, self-assembled nanorods are characterized by inhomogeneous heights and diameters, which render the device processing very difficult and negatively affect the electronic transport properties of the final device. For this reason, the selective area growth (SAG) mode has been proposed, where the nanorods preferentially grow with high order on pre-defined sites on a pre-patterned substrate

One presents in this work the study of the interaction between a focused laser beam and Si nanowires (NWs). The NWs heating induced by the laser beam is studied by solving the heat transfer equation by finite element methods (fem). This analysis permits to establish the temperature distribution inside the NW when it is excited by the laser beam. The overheating is dependent on the dimensions of the NW, both the diameter and the length. When performing optical characterization of the NWs using focused laser beams, one has to consider the temperature increase introduced by the laser beam. An important issue concerns the fact that the NWs diameter has subwavelength dimensions, and is also smaller than the focused laser beam. The analysis of the thermal behaviour of the NWs under the excitation with the laser beam permits the interpretation of the Raman spectra of Si NWs, where it is demonstrated that temperature induced by the laser beam play a major role in shaping the Raman spectrum of Si NWs

he composition, strain and surface morphology of (0001)InGaN layers are investigated as a function of growth temperature (460–645 °C) and impinging In flux. Three different growth regimes: nitrogen-rich, metal-rich and intermediate metal-rich, are clearly identified and found to be in correlation with surface morphology and strain relaxation. Best epilayers’ quality is obtained when growing under intermediate metal-rich conditions, with 1–2 monolayers thick In ad-coverage. For a given In flux, the In incorporation decreases with increasing growth temperature due to InN thermal decomposition that follows an Arrhenius behavior with 1.84±0.12 eV activation energy.

ABSTRACT This PhD thesis named "Contribution to Active Multi-Beam Reconfigurable Antennas for L and S Bands", has been written by the Electrical Engineer MSc. researcher Javier García-Gasco Trujillo in the Grupo de Radiación of the Departamento de Señales, Sistemas y Radiocomunicaciones from the ETSI de Telecomunicación of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. For decades, the implementation of electronically steerable phased array antennas was confined to the military area. Their high cost and complexity were the major obstacles to introduce this technology in large scale commercial applications. The recent emergence of new practical, low-cost, and highly reliable solid state devices; breaks the barrier of cost and reduces the complexity, making active phased arrays a viable future option. Thus, phased array antennas could be the crown jewel that allow to meet the future challenges in military and civilian communication systems. Now is time to deploy low-cost phased array antennas, where newly commercial components form the core of the architecture. Therefore, the study and implementation of these novel low-cost and highly efficient solid state phased array blocks capable of controlling signal phase/amplitude accurately is one of the great challenges of our time. This thesis faces this challenge, proposing innovative electronic beam steering networks and transmitter/ receiver (T/R) modules using affordable solid state components, which could integrate fair reconfigurable phased array antennas working in L and S bands. In the first part of the thesis, a description of the state of art of phased array antennas, including their fundamentals and their competitive advantages, is presented. Since thesis contributions have been carried out for different research projects, where antennas with single/double circular polarization and single/double working frequency bands have been examined, frameworks of the two more important projects are detailed: the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) programme from the European Space Agency (ESA), and the GEOdesic Dome Array (GEODA) project from ISDEFE-INSA and the ESA. Undoubtedly, phase shifter devices are one of the key components of phased array antennas. Recent years have witnessed wide fluctuations in commercial phase shifter prices, which sometimes led to unaffordable limit. Several RF steering technique alternatives to the commercial phase shifters are proposed, summarized, and compared: the switched line phase shifter, the switched-beam network, and the novel phase shifter power splitter/combiner network. In order to show a practical use of the three different techniques, the five element GEODA-SARAS subarray is proposed as a real case of study. Finally, a practical study of a newly phase shifter power splitter/combiner network for a subarray of five radiating elements with triangular distribution is shown. Measurements of the two different phase shifter power splitter/combiner prototypes integrating the whole network are also depicted, demonstrating their proper performance. A triangular cell of three radiating elements is the simplest way to obtain a planar scanner. A new multibeam network configuration that provides three orthogonal beams in a desired _0 elevation angle and an extra one in the broadside steering direction for a triangular array of three radiating elements is introduced. Firstly, a short introduction to the state of art of classical multi-beam networks is presented. Lossless network analysis, including original lossless network designs, are also commented. General dissipative network theory as well as applications for array antennas of three radiating elements are depicted. The proposed final basic multi-beam network are simulated, built and measured to the GEODA cell practical case. A combined network that provides six orthogonal beams in a desired _0 elevation angle and a double seventh one in the broadside direction by using two complementary proposed basic networks will be shown. Measurements of the whole system will be also depicted, verifying the expected behavior. GEODA-SARAS T/R module RF chains are not a trivial design. A thorough description of all the components compounding GEODA-SARAS T/R module RF chains is presented. After presenting the general specifications of the GEODA-SARAS antenna and its block diagrams; two main blocks of the RF chains, the five element cell and the panel conversion module, are depicted and analyzed. Calibration module integrated within the two main blocks are also depicted. Signal flow throw the system analyzing critical situations such as maximum transmitted power (testing the chain unsaturation), minimum and maximum receiving signal (verifying sensitivity range), maximum receiver interference signals (assuring a proper reception), and G/T factor (fulfilling the technical specification) are evaluated. Phase quantization error effects are also listed. Finally, the manuscript contains the conclusions drawn of the present research and the future work.
