Multi-camera 3D tracking systems with overlapping cameras represent a powerful mean for scene analysis, as they potentially allow greater robustness than monocular systems and provide useful 3D information about object location and movement. However, their performance relies on accurately calibrated camera networks, which is not a realistic assumption in real surveillance environments. Here, we introduce a multi-camera system for tracking the 3D position of a varying number of objects and simultaneously refin-ing the calibration of the network of overlapping cameras. Therefore, we introduce a Bayesian framework that combines Particle Filtering for tracking with recursive Bayesian estimation methods by means of adapted transdimensional MCMC sampling. Addi-tionally, the system has been designed to work on simple motion detection masks, making it suitable for camera networks with low transmission capabilities. Tests show that our approach allows a successful performance even when starting from clearly inaccurate camera calibrations, which would ruin conventional approaches.

Voice biometry is classically based on the parameterization and patterning of speech features mainly. The present approach is based on the characterization of phonation features instead (glottal features). The intention is to reduce intra-speaker variability due to the `text'. Through the study of larynx biomechanics it may be seen that the glottal correlates constitute a family of 2-nd order gaussian wavelets. The methodology relies in the extraction of glottal correlates (the glottal source) which are parameterized using wavelet techniques. Classification and pattern matching was carried out using Gaussian Mixture Models. Data of speakers from a balanced database and NIST SRE HASR2 were used in verification experiments. Preliminary results are given and discussed.

Apart from the first year of life, both energy and nutrient requirements are greatest during adolescence and the way to spend this energy by movement is also crucial. Vitamins are specifically involved in multiple cellular and tissue processes, and there is increasing evidence that deficiencies at these early ages could contribute to risk factors of chronic diseases like cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis in adulthood, regardless data are scarce for younger ages. Vitamin concentrations are largely influenced by diet but other individual factors like body composition, physical activity or fitness together with genetics could play also an important role. The current thesis analyzes the liposoluble vitamin status in European adolescents and their relation with several health related factors, like body composción, dietary intake, physical activity and fitness. The work is based on data from the HELENA study ("Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence"), for which a total of 1089 adolescents from ten different cities, in nine European countries were recruited. The main outcomes of this thesis are: a) There is a high liposoluble vitamin deficiency prevalence in European adolescents, specifically for vitamin D, which is presenting almost 80% of the adolescents. b) Season, latitude, BMI, fitness, dietary calcium intake, supplements intake and age are highly related to 25(OH)D concentrations found in European adolescents. c) Cardiorespiratory fitness may predict 25(OH)D concentrations in male adolescents, whereas upper limbs muscular strength and FFM may predict 25(OH)D concentrations in young females. Fat mass and BMI are inversely related to 25(OH)D concentrations, especially in males. d) The effect of 25(OH)D concentrations on bone mineral content in adolescents depends on physical activity levels. e) There is a need to establish a consensus on acceptable ranges and cut-offs of blood concentrations of these vitamins during adolescence, as currently they are extrapolated from adults.

Providing QoS in the context of Ad Hoc networks includes a very wide field of application from the perspective of every level of the architecture in the network. Saying It in another way, It is possible to speak about QoS when a network is capable of guaranteeing a trustworthy communication in both extremes, between any couple of the network nodes by means of an efficient Management and administration of the resources that allows a suitable differentiation of services in agreement with the characteristics and demands of every single application. The principal objective of this article is the analysis of the quality parameters of service that protocols of routering reagents such as AODV and DSR give in the Ad Hoc mobile Networks; all of this is supported by the simulator ns-2. Here were going to analyze the behavior of some other parameters like effective channel, loss of packages and latency in the protocols of routering. Were going to show you which protocol presents better characteristics of Quality of Service (QoS) in the MANET networks.

Stochastic model updating must be considered for quantifying uncertainties inherently existing in real-world engineering structures. By this means the statistical properties, instead of deterministic values, of structural parameters can be sought indicating the parameter variability. However, the implementation of stochastic model updating is much more complicated than that of deterministic methods particularly in the aspects of theoretical complexity and low computational efficiency. This study attempts to propose a simple and cost-efficient method by decomposing a stochastic updating process into a series of deterministic ones with the aid of response surface models and Monte Carlo simulation. The response surface models are used as surrogates for original FE models in the interest of programming simplification, fast response computation and easy inverse optimization. Monte Carlo simulation is adopted for generating samples from the assumed or measured probability distributions of responses. Each sample corresponds to an individual deterministic inverse process predicting the deterministic values of parameters. Then the parameter means and variances can be statistically estimated based on all the parameter predictions by running all the samples. Meanwhile, the analysis of variance approach is employed for the evaluation of parameter variability significance. The proposed method has been demonstrated firstly on a numerical beam and then a set of nominally identical steel plates tested in the laboratory. It is found that compared with the existing stochastic model updating methods, the proposed method presents similar accuracy while its primary merits consist in its simple implementation and cost efficiency in response computation and inverse optimization.

A methodology is described for understanding the interaction of karstic aquifers with allogenic rivers, where little information is available. This methodology includes conventional hydrogen- ology methods tracer tests and measurements of flow into, out of and circulating within the karstic system. The method is designed to un- derstand the hydrogeological behaviour of a river in sufficient detail, given a short study pe- riod. The methodology is applied to a karstic system in Spain, obtaining useful, quantitative results for a hydrological year, such as an esti- mate of the water balance, differentiation be- tween autogenic and allogenic natural recharge, relationship and connection between the river and the aquifer, and measurements of infiltration capacity in watercourses under different hydro- logical situations. The paper deals with a useful example that could be applied to other rivers and aquifers where few data are available. It can be applied to aquifers under a natural regime and Mediterranean climate.

Flash floods are of major relevance in natural disaster management in the Mediterranean region. In many cases, the damaging effects of flash floods can be mitigated by adequate management of flood control reservoirs. This requires the development of suitable models for optimal operation of reservoirs. A probabilistic methodology for calibrating the parameters of a reservoir flood control model (RFCM) that takes into account the stochastic variability of flood events is presented. This study addresses the crucial problem of operating reservoirs during flood events, considering downstream river damages and dam failure risk as conflicting operation criteria. These two criteria are aggregated into a single objective of total expected damages from both the maximum released flows and stored volumes (overall risk index). For each selected parameter set the RFCM is run under a wide range of hydrologic loads (determined through Monte Carlo simulation). The optimal parameter set is obtained through the overall risk index (balanced solution) and then compared with other solutions of the Pareto front. The proposed methodology is implemented at three different reservoirs in the southeast of Spain. The results obtained show that the balanced solution offers a good compromise between the two main objectives of reservoir flood control management

Correct modeling of the equivalent circuits regarding solar cell and panels is today an essential tool for power optimization. However, the parameter extraction of those circuits is still a quite difficult task that normally requires both experimental data and calculation procedures, generally not available to the normal user. This paper presents a new analytical method that easily calculates the equivalent circuit parameters from the data that manufacturers usually provide. The analytical approximation is based on a new methodology, since methods developed until now to obtain the aforementioned equivalent circuit parameters from manufacturer's data have always been numerical or heuristic. Results from the present method are as accurate as the ones resulting from other more complex (numerical) existing methods in terms of calculation process and resources.

In a short stretch of its headwaters, the base flow of the River Duero increases by several m3/s as it traverses some Mesozoic carbonate outcrops. This is of special importance during the dry season, when the majority of the base flow of the river proceeds from springs in this reach. The outcrops correspond to one of two confined calcareous aquifers that developed in parallel but which are not hydraulically connected because of an impermeable layer. Together, they constitute the aquifer system of the Gormaz Springs. The system is still in its natural regime and is hardly exploited. This study defines the conceptual model of hydrogeological functioning, taking into consideration the role of the Gormaz Fault, which is situated in the discharge zone of the system. Analysis of both antecedent geological information and geophysical explorations has led to a better understanding of the geometry and boundaries of the aquifers, defining an aquifer system with a recharge zone in the south corresponding to in the calcareous outcrops. These calcareous outcrops are confined to the north below Tertiary formations, as far as their intersection with the normal fault of Gormaz. The throw of the fault forms the barrier of the permeable formations situated in the extreme north (right bank of the River Duero). In turn, the fault plane facilitates the upflow of groundwater from the aquifer system and creates hydraulic connection between the two aquifers. In addition, the study estimated the hydraulic parameters of the aquifer around the fault. The close correlation between piezometric levels and the groundwater discharges to the River Duero has enabled the reconstruction of the hydrogram of Gormaz springs over the period 1992-2006. By this means, it is calculated that the groundwater contribution to the River Duero is 135.9 hm3/year, or 18.9% of the total river inflow.

ABSTRACT The accumulation of the anthropogenic greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is the main responsible for: i) the increase in the average temperature of the Earth over the past century by almost 1 °C; ii) the rise in the mean sea level; iii) the drop of the ice volume and terrestrial snow; iv) the strong climate variability and extreme weather events that have been happening over the last decades; and v) the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases. All of these events are just some of the evidence of current climate change. The problems and growing concern related to these phenomena, prompted the adoption of the so-called "Kyoto Protocol" (Japan) in 1997, in which the signatory countries established different measurements to control and reduce the emissions of the greenhouse gases. These measurements include the CCS technologies, focused on the capture, transport and storage of CO2. Within this context, it was approved, in October 2008, the Strategic Singular Project "Tecnologías avanzadas de generación, captura y almacenamiento de CO2" (PSE-120000-2008-6), supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the FEDER funds. This Project, by means of the Subproject "Geological Storage of CO2" (PSS- 120000-2008-31), was focused on the detailed study of the Natural Analogue of CO2 Storage and Leakage located in the Ganuelas-Mazarron Tertiary basin (Murcia), among other Spanish Natural Analogues. This research work has been performed in the framework of this Subproject, being its final objective to predict the behaviour and evaluate the safety, at short, medium and long-term, of a CO2 Deep Geological Storage (CO2-DGS) by means of a comprehensive study of the abovementioned Natural Analogue. This study comprises: i) the geological and hydrogeological context of the basin and its geophysical research; ii) the water sampling of the selected aquifers to establish their hydrogeochemical and isotopic features; iii) the mineralogical, petrographic, geochemical and isotopic characterisation of the travertines formed from upwelling groundwater of several hydrogeological and geothermal wells; and iv) the measurement of the free and dissolved gases detected in the basin, as well as their chemical and isotopic characterisation, mainly regarding CO2 and 222Rn. This information, summarised in separate chapters in the text, has enabled to build a conceptual model of the studied natural system and to establish the analogies between both the studied natural system and a CO2-DGS, with possible natural and/or anthropogenic escapes. All this information has served, firstly, to predict the behaviour and to evaluate the safety, at short, medium and long-term, of a CO2-DGS and, secondly, to propose a general methodology to study suitable sites for a CO2-DGS, taking into account the lessons learned from this CO2 natural reservoir. The main results indicate that the Ganuelas-Mazarron basin is a graben bounded by normal faults with significant vertical movements, which move down the metamorphic substrate (Nevado-Filabride Complex), and filled with acid volcanic-subvolcanic rocks. Furthermore, this basin is filled with two sedimentary formations: i) the Miocene marls, which are predominant and almost exclusive in the basin; xxiv and ii) the Plio-Quaternary conglomerates and gravels. A deep saline CO2-rich aquifer was evidenced in this basin as a result of the geothermal exploration wells performed during the 80s, located just at the top of the Nevado-Filabride Complex and at a depth that could exceed 800 m, according to the geophysical exploration performed. This saline CO2-rich aquifer is precisely the main object of this study. Therefore, it is not discarded the possibility that the CO2 in this aquifer be in supercritical state. Consequently, the aforementioned basin gathers the main characteristics of a natural and deep CO2 geological storage, or natural analogue of a CO2-DGS in a deep saline aquifer. The overexploitation of the shallow aquifers in this basin for agriculture purposes caused the drop of the groundwater levels and hydrostatic pressures, and, as a result, the ascent of the deep saline and CO2-rich groundwater, which is the responsible for the contamination of the shallow and fresh aquifers. The hydrogeochemical features of groundwater from the investigated aquifers show the presence of very different hydrofacies, even in those with similar lithology. The high salinity of this groundwater prevents the human and agricultural uses. In addition, the slightly acidic character of most of these waters determines their capacity to dissolve and transport towards the surface heavy and/or toxic elements, among which U is highlighted. This element is abundant in the acidic volcanic rocks of the basin, with concentrations up to 14 ppm, mainly as sub-microscopic uraninite crystals. The isotopic study of this groundwater, particularly the isotopic signature of C from DIC (δ13C-DIC), suggests that dissolved C can be explained considering a mixture of C from two main different sources: i) from the thermal decomposition of limestones and marbles forming the substrate; and ii) from edaphic origin. However, a minor contribution of C from mantle degassing cannot be discarded. The study of travertines being formed from upwelling groundwater of several hydrogeological and geothermal wells, as a result of the fast CO2 degassing and the pH increase, has allowed highlighting this phenomenon, by analogy, as an alert for the CO2 leakages from a CO2-DGS. The analysis of the dissolved and free gases, with special attention to CO2 and 222Rn, indicates that the C from the dissolved and free CO2 has a similar origin to that of the DIC. The R/Ra ratio of He corroborates the minor contribution of CO2 from the mantle degassing. Furthermore, 222Rn is generated by the radioactive decay of U, particularly abundant in the volcanic rocks of the basin, and/or by 226Ra from the U or from the Messinian gypsum in the basin. Moreover, CO2 acts as a carrier of the 222Rn, a fact evidenced by the positive anomalies of both gases at ~ 1 m depth and mainly related to natural (faults and contacts) and anthropogenic (wells) perturbations. The isotopic signature of C from DIC, carbonates (travertines), and dissolved and free CO2, suggests that this parameter can be used as an excellent tracer of CO2 escapes from a CO2-DGS, in which CO2 usually from the combustion of fossil fuels, with δ13C(V-PDB) of ~ -30 ‰, will be injected. All of these results have allowed to build a conceptual model of the behaviour of the natural system studied as a natural analogue of a CO2-DGS, as well as to establish the relationships between both natural xxv and artificial systems. Thus, the most important analogies, regarding the elements of the system, would be the presence of: i) a deep saline CO2-rich aquifer, which would be analogous to the storage formation of a CO2-DGS; ii) a marly sedimentary formation with a thickness greater than 500 m, which would correspond to the sealing formation of a CO2-DGS; and iii) shallow aquifers with fresh waters suitable for human consumption, U-rich volcanic rocks, and faults that are sealed by gypsums and/or marls; geological elements that could also be present in a CO2-DGS. On the other hand, the most important analogous processes identified are: i) the upward injection of CO2, which would be analogous to the downward injection of the anthropogenic CO2, this last with a δ13C(V-PDB) of ~ -30 ‰; ii) the dissolution of CO2 and 222Rn in groundwater of the deep aquifer, which would be analogous to the dissolution of these gases in the storage formation of a CO2-DGS; iii) the contamination of the shallow aquifers by the uprising of CO2-oversaturated groundwater, an analogous process to the contamination that would occur in shallow aquifers located above a CO2-DGS, whenever it was naturally (reactivation of faults) or artificially (wells) perturbed; iv) the degassing (CO2 and associated gases, among which 222Rn is remarkable) of the deep saline aquifer through wells, process which could be similar in a perturbed CO2- DGS; v) the rapid formation of travertines, indicating that the CO2-DGS has lost its seal capacity. The identification of the most important analogies has also allowed analysing and evaluating, approximately, the behaviour and safety in the short, medium and long term, of a CO2-DGS hosted in a similar geological context of the natural system studied. For that, it has been followed the methodology based on the analysis and identification of FEPs (Features, Events and Processes) that have been combined together in order to generate and analyse different scenarios of the system evolution (scenario analysis). These identified scenarios in the perturbed natural system, related to boreholes, overexploitation of aquifers, rapid precipitation of travertines, etc., would be similar to those that might occur in a CO2-DGS anthropogenically perturbed, so that it is absolutely necessary to avoid the artificial perturbation of the seal formation of a CO2-DGS. Finally, a useful methodology for the study of possible sites for a CO2-DGS is suggested based on the information obtained from this investigation, taking into account the lessons learned from this CO2 natural reservoir. This methodology comprises several phases of study, including the geological and structural characterisation of the site and its components (water, rock and gases), the identification of the analogies between a CO2 storage natural system and a conceptual model of a CO2-DGS, and the implications regarding the behaviour and safety of a CO2-DGS.

In the smart building control industry, creating a platform to integrate different communication protocols and ease the interaction between users and devices is becoming increasingly important. BATMP is a platform designed to achieve this goal. In this paper, the authors describe a novel mechanism for information exchange, which introduces a new concept, Parameter, and uses it as the common object among all the BATMP components: Gateway Manager, Technology Manager, Application Manager, Model Manager and Data Warehouse. Parameter is an object which represents a physical magnitude and contains the information about its presentation, available actions, access type, etc. Each component of BATMP has a copy of the parameters. In the Technology Manager, three drivers for different communication protocols, KNX, CoAP and Modbus, are implemented to convert devices into parameters. In the Gateway Manager, users can control the parameters directly or by defining a scenario. In the Application Manager, the applications can subscribe to parameters and decide the values of parameters by negotiating. Finally, a Negotiator is implemented in the Model Manager to notify other components about the changes taking place in any component. By applying this mechanism, BATMP ensures the simultaneous and concurrent communication among users, applications and devices.

Container terminals are complex systems where a large number of factors and stakeholders interact to provide high-quality services under rigid planning schedules and economic objectives. The socalled next generation terminals are conceived to serve the new mega-vessels, which are demanding productivity rates up to 300 moves/hour. These terminals need to satisfy high standards because competition among terminals is fierce. Ensuring reliability in berth scheduling is key to attract clients, as well as to reduce at a minimum the time that vessels stay the port. Because of the aforementioned, operations planning is becoming more complex, and the tolerances for errors are smaller. In this context, operational disturbances must be reduced at a minimum. The main sources of operational disruptions and thus, of uncertainty, are identified and characterized in this study. External drivers interact with the infrastructure and/or the activities resulting in failure or stoppage modes. The later may derive not only in operational delays but in collateral and reputation damage or loss of time (especially management times), all what implies an impact for the terminal. In the near future, the monitoring of operational variables has great potential to make a qualitative improvement in the operations management and planning models of terminals that use increasing levels of automation. The combination of expert criteria with instruments that provide short- and long-run data is fundamental for the development of tools to guide decision-making, since they will be adapted to the real climatic and operational conditions that exist on site. For the short-term a method to obtain operational parameter forecasts in container terminals. To this end, a case study is presented, in which forecasts of vessel performance are obtained. This research has been entirely been based on data gathered from a semi-automated container terminal from Spain. In the other hand it is analyzed how to manage, evaluate and mitigate disruptions in the long-term by means of the risk assessment, an interesting approach to evaluate the effect of uncertain but likely events on the long-term throughput of the terminal. In addition, a definition for operational risk evaluation in port facilities is proposed along with a discussion of the terms that better represent the nature of the activities involved and finally, guidelines to manage the results obtained are provided.

Wave energy conversion has an essential difference from other renewable energies since the dependence between the devices design and the energy resource is stronger. Dimensioning is therefore considered a key stage when a design project of Wave Energy Converters (WEC) is undertaken. Location, WEC concept, Power Take-Off (PTO) type, control strategy and hydrodynamic resonance considerations are some of the critical aspects to take into account to achieve a good performance. The paper proposes an automatic dimensioning methodology to be accomplished at the initial design project stages and the following elements are described to carry out the study: an optimization design algorithm, its objective functions and restrictions, a PTO model, as well as a procedure to evaluate the WEC energy production. After that, a parametric analysis is included considering different combinations of the key parameters previously introduced. A variety of study cases are analysed from the point of view of energy production for different design-parameters and all of them are compared with a reference case. Finally, a discussion is presented based on the results obtained, and some recommendations to face the WEC design stage are given.
