In this work, robustness and stability of continuum damage models applied to material failure in soft tissues are addressed. In the implicit damage models equipped with softening, the presence of negative eigenvalues in the tangent elemental matrix degrades the condition number of the global matrix, leading to a reduction of the computational performance of the numerical model. Two strategies have been adapted from literature to improve the aforementioned computational performance degradation: the IMPL-EX integration scheme [Oliver,2006], which renders the elemental matrix contribution definite positive, and arclength-type continuation methods [Carrera,1994], which allow to capture the unstable softening branch in brittle ruptures. The IMPL-EX integration scheme has as a major drawback the need to use small time steps to keep numerical error below an acceptable value. A convergence study, limiting the maximum allowed increment of internal variables in the damage model, is presented. Finally, numerical simulation of failure problems with fibre reinforced materials illustrates the performance of the adopted methodology.

In this paper, Adams explicit and implicit formulas are obtained in a simple way and a relationship between them is established, allowing for their joint implementation as predictor-corrector methods. It is shown the purposefulness, from a didactic point of view, of Excel spreadsheets for calculations and for the orderly presentation of results in the application of Adams methods to solving initial value problems in ordinary differential equations.

This paper describes new approaches to improve the local and global approximation (matching) and modeling capability of Takagi–Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. The main aim is obtaining high function approximation accuracy and fast convergence. The main problem encountered is that T-S identification method cannot be applied when the membership functions are overlapped by pairs. This restricts the application of the T-S method because this type of membership function has been widely used during the last 2 decades in the stability, controller design of fuzzy systems and is popular in industrial control applications. The approach developed here can be considered as a generalized version of T-S identification method with optimized performance in approximating nonlinear functions. We propose a noniterative method through weighting of parameters approach and an iterative algorithm by applying the extended Kalman filter, based on the same idea of parameters’ weighting. We show that the Kalman filter is an effective tool in the identification of T-S fuzzy model. A fuzzy controller based linear quadratic regulator is proposed in order to show the effectiveness of the estimation method developed here in control applications. An illustrative example of an inverted pendulum is chosen to evaluate the robustness and remarkable performance of the proposed method locally and globally in comparison with the original T-S model. Simulation results indicate the potential, simplicity, and generality of the algorithm. An illustrative example is chosen to evaluate the robustness. In this paper, we prove that these algorithms converge very fast, thereby making them very practical to use.

The threat of impact or explosive loads is regrettably a scenario to be taken into account in the design of lifeline or critical civilian buildings. These are often made of concrete and not specifically designed for military threats. Numerical simulation of such cases may be undertaken with the aid of state of the art explicit dynamic codes, however several difficult challenges are inherent to such models: the material modeling for the concrete anisotropic failure, consideration of reinforcement bars and important structural details, adequate modeling of pressure waves from explosions in complex geometries, and efficient solution to models of complete buildings which can realistically assess failure modes. In this work we employ LS-Dyna for calculation, with Lagrangian finite elements and explicit time integration. Reinforced concrete may be represented in a fairly accurate fashion with recent models such as CSCM model [1] and segregated rebars constrained within the continuum mesh. However, such models cannot be realistically employed for complete models of large buildings, due to limitations of time and computer resources. The use of structural beam and shell elements for this purpose would be the obvious solution, with much lower computational cost. However, this modeling requires careful calibration in order to reproduce adequately the highly nonlinear response of structural concrete members, including bending with and without compression, cracking or plastic crushing, plastic deformation of reinforcement, erosion of vanished elements etc. The main objective of this work is to provide a strategy for modeling such scenarios based on structural elements, using available material models for structural elements [2] and techniques to include the reinforcement in a realistic way. These models are calibrated against fully three-dimensional models and shown to be accurate enough. At the same time they provide the basis for realistic simulation of impact and explosion on full-scale buildings

The authors are from UPM and are relatively grouped, and all have intervened in different academic or real cases on the subject, at different times as being of different age. With precedent from E. Torroja and A. Páez in Madrid Spain Safety Probabilistic models for concrete about 1957, now in ICOSSAR conferences, author J.M. Antón involved since autumn 1967 for euro-steel construction in CECM produced a math model for independent load superposition reductions, and using it a load coefficient pattern for codes in Rome Feb. 1969, practically adopted for European constructions, giving in JCSS Lisbon Feb. 1974 suggestion of union for concrete-steel-al.. That model uses model for loads like Gumbel type I, for 50 years for one type of load, reduced to 1 year to be added to other independent loads, the sum set in Gumbel theories to 50 years return period, there are parallel models. A complete reliability system was produced, including non linear effects as from buckling, phenomena considered somehow in actual Construction Eurocodes produced from Model Codes. The system was considered by author in CEB in presence of Hydraulic effects from rivers, floods, sea, in reference with actual practice. When redacting a Road Drainage Norm in MOPU Spain an optimization model was realized by authors giving a way to determine the figure of Return Period, 10 to 50 years, for the cases of hydraulic flows to be considered in road drainage. Satisfactory examples were a stream in SE of Spain with Gumbel Type I model and a paper of Ven Te Chow with Mississippi in Keokuk using Gumbel type II, and the model can be modernized with more varied extreme laws. In fact in the MOPU drainage norm the redacting commission acted also as expert to set a table of return periods for elements of road drainage, in fact as a multi-criteria complex decision system. These precedent ideas were used e.g. in wide Codes, indicated in symposia or meetings, but not published in journals in English, and a condensate of contributions of authors is presented. The authors are somehow involved in optimization for hydraulic and agro planning, and give modest hints of intended applications in presence of agro and environment planning as a selection of the criteria and utility functions involved in bayesian, multi-criteria or mixed decision systems. Modest consideration is made of changing in climate, and on the production and commercial systems, and on others as social and financial.

Abstract Pre-operative planning has become an essential task in complex surgeries and therapies, especially for those affecting soft tissue. One example where soft tissue preoperative planning is of high interest is liver surgery. It involves the accurate detection and identification of individual liver lesions and vessels as well as the proper functional liver segmentation and volume estimation. This process is very important because it determines whether the patient is a suitable candidate for surgical therapy and the type of procedure. Soft tissue radiation therapy is a second example where planning is required for both conventional external and intraoperative radiotherapy. It involves the segmentation of the tumor target and vulnerable organs and the estimation of the planned dose. Functional liver segmentations and volume estimations for surgery planning are commonly estimated from computed tomography (CT) images. Similarly, in radiation therapy planning, targets to be irradiated and healthy and vulnerable tissues to be protected from irradiation are commonly delineated on CT scans. However, developments in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology are progressively offering advantages. For instance, the hepatic metastasis detection rate has been found to be significantly higher in Gd–EOB–DTPAenhanced MRI than in CT. Therefore, recent studies highlight the importance of combining the information from CT and MRI to achieve the highest level of accuracy in radiotherapy and to facilitate accurate liver lesion description. In order to improve those two soft tissue pre operative planning scenarios, an accurate nonrigid image registration algorithm is clearly required. However, the vast majority of commercial systems only provide rigid registration. Voxel intensity measures have been shown to be robust measures of image similarity, and among them, Mutual Information (MI) is always the first candidate in multimodal registrations. However, one of the main drawbacks of Mutual Information is the absence of spatial information and the assumption that statistical relationships between images are the same over the whole domain of the image. The hypothesis of the present thesis is that incorporating spatial organ information into the registration process may improve the registration robustness and quality, taking advantage of the clinical segmentations availability. In this work, a multimodal nonrigid 3D registration framework using a new Organ- Focused Mutual Information metric (OF-MI) is proposed, validated and compared to the classical formulation of the Mutual Information (MI). It allows improving registration results in problematic areas by adding regional information into the similitude criterion taking advantage of actual segmentations availability in standard clinical protocols and allowing the statistical dependence between the two modalities differ among organs or regions. The proposed method is applied to CT and T1 weighted delayed Gd–EOB–DTPA-enhanced MRI registration as well as to register CT and MRI images in rectal intraoperative radiotherapy planning. Additionally, a 3D support segmentation algorithm based on Level-Sets has been developed for the incorporation of the organ information into the registration. The segmentation algorithm has been specifically designed for the healthy and functional liver volume estimation demonstrating good performance in a set of abdominal CT studies. Results show a statistical significant improvement of registration quality measures with OF-MI compared to MI with both simulated data (p<0.001) and real data in liver applications registering CT and Gd–EOB–DTPA-enhanced MRI and in registration for rectal radiotherapy planning using multi-organ OF-MI (p<0.05). Additionally, OF-MI presents more stable results with smaller dispersion than MI and a more robust behavior with respect to SNR changes and parameters variation. The proposed OF-MI always presents equal or better accuracy than the classical MI and consequently can be a very convenient alternative within applications where the robustness of the method and the facility to choose the parameters are particularly important.

It is well known that the evaluation of the influence matrices in the boundary-element method requires the computation of singular integrals. Quadrature formulae exist which are especially tailored to the specific nature of the singularity, i.e. log(*- x0)9 Ijx- JC0), etc. Clearly the nodes and weights of these formulae vary with the location Xo of the singular point. A drawback of this approach is that a given problem usually includes different types of singularities, and therefore a general-purpose code would have to include many alternative formulae to cater for all possible cases. Recently, several authors1"3 have suggested a type independent alternative technique based on the combination of standard Gaussian rules with non-linear co-ordinate transformations. The transformation approach is particularly appealing in connection with the p.adaptive version, where the location of the collocation points varies at each step of the refinement process. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the technique in eference 3. We show that this technique is asymptotically correct as the number of Gauss points increases. However, the method possesses a 'hidden' source of error that is analysed and can easily be removed.

Objective: This study assessed the efficacy of a closed-loop (CL) system consisting of a predictive rule-based algorithm (pRBA) on achieving nocturnal and postprandial normoglycemia in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The algorithm is personalized for each patient’s data using two different strategies to control nocturnal and postprandial periods. Research Design and Methods: We performed a randomized crossover clinical study in which 10 T1DM patients treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) spent two nonconsecutive nights in the research facility: one with their usual CSII pattern (open-loop [OL]) and one controlled by the pRBA (CL). The CL period lasted from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m., including overnight control, and control of breakfast. Venous samples for blood glucose (BG) measurement were collected every 20 min. Results: Time spent in normoglycemia (BG, 3.9–8.0 mmol/L) during the nocturnal period (12 a.m.–8 a.m.), expressed as median (interquartile range), increased from 66.6% (8.3–75%) with OL to 95.8% (73–100%) using the CL algorithm (P<0.05). Median time in hypoglycemia (BG, <3.9 mmol/L) was reduced from 4.2% (0–21%) in the OL night to 0.0% (0.0–0.0%) in the CL night (P<0.05). Nine hypoglycemic events (<3.9 mmol/L) were recorded with OL compared with one using CL. The postprandial glycemic excursion was not lower when the CL system was used in comparison with conventional preprandial bolus: time in target (3.9–10.0 mmol/L) 58.3% (29.1–87.5%) versus 50.0% (50–100%). Conclusions: A highly precise personalized pRBA obtains nocturnal normoglycemia, without significant hypoglycemia, in T1DM patients. There appears to be no clear benefit of CL over prandial bolus on the postprandial glycemia

ABSTRACT Decision makers increasingly face complex decision-making problems where they have to simultaneously consider many often conflicting criteria. In most decision-making problems it is necessary to consider economic, social and environmental criteria. Decision making theory provides an adequate framework for helping decision makers to make complex decisions where they can jointly consider the uncertainty about the performance of each alternative for each attribute, and the imprecision of the decision maker's preferences. In this PhD thesis we focus on the imprecision of the decision maker's preferences represented by an additive multiattribute utility function. Therefore, we consider the imprecision of weights, as well as of component utility functions for each attribute. We consider the case in which the imprecision is represented by ranges of values or by ordinal information rather than precise values. In this respect, we propose methods for ranking alternatives based on notions of dominance intensity, also known as preference intensity, which attempt to measure how much more preferred each alternative is to the others. The performance of the propose methods has been analyzed and compared against the leading existing methods that are applicable to this type of problem. For this purpose, we conducted a simulation study using two efficiency measures (hit ratio and Kendall correlation coefficient) to compare the different methods.

Since the decade of the 1980’s the literature on economic development began paying attention to the cases of countries which were industrialized after the first industrial revolution. One of the most relevant aspects analyzed has been the role of technology as a factor which promotes or delays the process of catching up with technology leaders. As result of this interest, new and more adequate indicators were identified to provide a coherent explanation for technological activities and their relationship with economic efficiency. Although the earliest studies focused on analyzing the activities of research and development (R&D), recently the focus of analysis has shifted to another type of variables, more oriented towards the processes of innovation and the gathering of knowledge and capabilities, in which patents provide relevant information.

This article investigates experimentally the application of health monitoring techniques to assess the damage on a particular kind of hysteretic (metallic) damper called web plastifying dampers, which are subjected to cyclic loading. In general terms, hysteretic dampers are increasingly used as passive control systems in advanced earthquake-resistant structures. Nonparametric statistical processing of the signals obtained from simple vibration tests of the web plastifying damper is used here to propose an area index damage. This area index damage is compared with an alternative energy-based index of damage proposed in past research that is based on the decomposition of the load?displacement curve experienced by the damper. Index of damage has been proven to accurately predict the level of damage and the proximity to failure of web plastifying damper, but obtaining the load?displacement curve for its direct calculation requires the use of costly instrumentation. For this reason, the aim of this study is to estimate index of damage indirectly from simple vibration tests, calling for much simpler and cheaper instrumentation, through an auxiliary index called area index damage. Web plastifying damper is a particular type of hysteretic damper that uses the out-of-plane plastic deformation of the web of I-section steel segments as a source of energy dissipation. Four I-section steel segments with similar geometry were subjected to the same pattern of cyclic loading, and the damage was evaluated with the index of damage and area index damage indexes at several stages of the loading process. A good correlation was found between area index damage and index of damage. Based on this correlation, simple formulae are proposed to estimate index of damage from the area index damage.

ABSTRACT In this work, we formulate a theory to address simulations of slow time transport effects in atomic systems. We first develop this theoretical framework in the context of equilibrium of atomic ensembles, based on statistical mechanics. We then adapt it to model ensembles away from equilibrium. The theory stands on Jaynes' maximum entropy principle, valid for the treatment of both, systems in equilibrium and away from equilibrium and on meanfield approximation theory. It is expressed in the entropy formulation as a variational principle. We interpret atomistic equivalents of macroscopic variables such as the temperature and the molar fractions, wich are not required to be uniform, but can vary from particle to particle. We complement this theory with Monte Carlo summation rules for further approximation. In addition, we provide a framework for studying transport processes with the full set of equations driving the evolution of the system. We first derive a dissipation inequality for the entropic production involving discrete thermodynamic forces and fluxes. This discrete dissipation inequality identifies the adequate structure for discrete kinetic potentials which couple the microscopic field rates to the corresponding driving forces. Those kinetic potentials must finally be expressed as a phenomenological rule of the Onsanger Type. We present several validation cases, illustrating equilibrium properties and surface segregation of metallic alloys. We first assess the ability of a simple meanfield model to reproduce thermodynamic equilibrium properties in systems with atomic resolution. Then, we evaluate the ability of the model to reproduce a long-term transport process in complex systems.

Vertical breakwaters are monolithic structures built to reflect sea waves, thereby providing a sheltered area on the land side. They are gravity retaining structures, that is, their own weight is their basic resisting mechanism. Loads acting on these structures are dynamic (waves) and consist essentially in a frontal thrust and an uplift pressure on the base, which both vary over time. Usually, actions in breakwater design are established by empirical formulas, which are described in this thesis. For works of particular importance, such forces are measured in small-scale laboratory tests. When there are no soils with enough shear strength under the planned vertical breakwaters, they usually rest on granular berms which redistribute the load. Nowadays, after establishing the acting forces on the breakwater (front push and uplift pressure), a pseudostatic calculation (with drained or undrained conditions depending on the foundation permeability) is normally done to analyze the stability of these structures against storm waves. It is known that pore pressures tend to rise in saturated soils under cyclic loading and, consequently, there is a reduction of effective stress. A degradation of the shear modulus also occurs depending on the number of load cycles. All of these effects can bring about the phenomenon known as liquefaction in sands or cyclic mobility in fine-grained soils. The aim of the thesis is to explore the possibility that current technology provides to analyze the stability of vertical breakwaters founded on soft soils, and to suggest a method to evaluate the dynamic stability in this type of works. To this end, a review has been made of procedures currently used to define the actions in calculations, the main models of dynamic behaviour of saturated soils available and of calculation procedures. Once the state of the art on this subject has been reviewed, a method of calculation is proposed that uses the commercial program FLAC and is applied to a typical vertical breakwater on a range of different foundation conditions. For the foundation soil, a hyperbolic constitutive model with pore pressure generation has been employed, whose parameters can be obtained from field and laboratory tests. Finally, the described procedure is applied to an actual case where a foundation failure occurred that led to the sinking of several caissons in a vertical breakwater located in the port of Barcelona. The results obtained with the proposed method are compared with those obtained using conventional methods.
