This paper addresses two aspects of the behavior of interior reinforced concrete waffle flat plate?column connections under lateral loads: the share of the unbalanced moment between flexure and excentric shear, and the effect of the transverse beams. A non-linear finite element model (benchmark model) was developed and calibrated with the results of quasi-static cyclic tests conducted on a 3/5 scale specimen. First, from this numerical model, the portion cv of the unbalanced moment transferred by the excentricity of shear about the centroid of the critical sections defined by Eurocode 2 (EC-2) and by ACI 318-11 was calculated and compared with the share-out prescribed by these codes. It is found that while the critical section of EC-2 is consistent with the cv provided by this code, in the case of ACI 318-11, the value assigned to cv is far below (about 50% smaller) the actual one obtained with the numerical simulations. Second, from the benchmark model, seven additional models were developed by varying the depth D of the transverse beam over the thickness h of the plate. It was found that the ductility of the connection and the effective width of the plate can respectively be increased up to 50% and 10% by raising D/h to 2 and 1.5.

Since the development of the first Self-Compacting Concrete in the late 80’s, its use has become widespread due to the reduction of the labor costs, the good finishing quality and the achieving of the necessary fluidity for congested reinforced pieces. Furthermore, Fiber Reinforced Concrete provides improvements of the mechanical properties which may even permit the reduction of the reinforcement. The mechanical behavior of a Self-Compacting Concrete with polyolefin fibers has been explored in this research. Results for mechanical properties and for fracture and post-cracking toughness have been obtained. The experimental campaign has been performed for a plain Self-Compacting Concrete and for three different fiber dosages from 3 kg/m³ to 6 kg/m³. These results show a significant enhancement of the post-cracking strength and the fracture energy without harming in the concrete self-compacting properties in fresh state.

The yawing moment acting on the box-girder deck of reinforced concrete bridges constructed using the balanced cantilever method during the erection stage has been experimentally analyzed by testing different types of bridge cross-sections. Experimental results show that the yawing moment coefficient decreases as the bridge decks become streamlined, and that the yawing moment coefficient reaches a maximum when the bridge deck length is nearly twice the deck width.

ABSTRACT The use of near‐surface mounted FRP reinforcement in reinforced concrete structures has seen a considerable increase in recent years as a strengthening method. Beam pull‐out tests for near‐surface reinforcement allow obtaining the local bond‐slip behavior of a bonded joint. The main objective of the current work deals with the three‐dimensional modeling of this kind of test with the purpose of characterizing suitably the mechanics of bond between FRP rods and concrete. In an initial stage, a two bidimensional in order to evaluate and to verify the behavior of the cohesive elements. Its behavior was evaluated first testing different material models and second testing the behavior when mixed mode failure appears, due to simultaneous axial and shear load. In a second stage a tridimensional model was created in order to study the pull‐out of an inserted beam of composite material in concrete. A concrete material model was created and the influence of each material parameter was studied qualitatively. The third part, the most relevant of the present work, the numerical simulation of the Beam Pull‐Out test was faced. All the parts of the Beam Pull‐Out test were included inthe simulation and different alternatives to represent the FRP bar – concrete interface have been evaluated, using cohesive elements and different distributions of them. In order to reproduce the test conditions more reliably, a PID controller has also been designed to conduct suitably the numerical tests in order to properly capture the softening branch of the load‐slip behaviour. The PID controller applies control techniques to calculate a priori the necessary amplitude of the load in order to achieve a given evolution through the simulation of an internal variable previously chosen. The variable used in order to correlate the simulation with the test results is the difference in displacements between two points and a linear evolution was chosen, but in the thesis the results of choosing other possible internal variables with different evolutions are also shown. The numerical FE simulations were compared with experimental measurements previously published. Load‐slip predictions compare well with the corresponding experimental data. The proposed model is also able to predict the failure mode at the FRP‐concrete interface. Some parametric studies have also been carried out, in order to evaluate the influence of each material parameter in the results. A qualitative study of the behaviour of the joint was also performed, using the results of the numeric simulations and through the use of macros and 3D graphs, the tensional state of each point of the joint can be visualized in each moment of the simulation.

This document studies the behavior of structural reinforced concrete structures subjected to imposed deformations, where the cracking occurs, mostly, in sections where the stresses, and thus cracks, due to the exterior actions are none-existent or practically zero. Early age cracking produced by the imposed deformations, due to heat of hydration and autogenous shrinkage, and long term effects, due to the drying shrinkage and the thermal variation, is studied. Available experimental results have been studied. A finite element program has been identified, ATENA, which allows the study of non-lineal phenomena, especially cracking. This software has been contrasted with the available experimental results. The imposed deformation sources have been studied for its characteristically sources: heat of hydration, concrete shrinkage and thermal variation. Also the evolution of the mechanical properties and the thermal conductivity of concrete in time and especially at early age have also been studied. The available experimental evidence and the proposal theoretical estimates have been studied. CIRIA 660 recommendations have been studied, which is the reference document to take into account, form the design point of view, this kind of phenomena. With the ATENA software different examples have been studied. On the one hand the main objective has been to understand the phenomena and, on the other, to contrast the CIRIA 660 proposal.

On Wednesday 11th May 2011 at 6:47 pm (local time) a magnitude 5.1 Mw earthquake occurred 6 km northeast of Lorca with a depth of around 5 km. As a consequence of the shallow depth and the small epicentral distance, important damage was produced in several masonry constructions and even led to the collapse of one of them. Pieces of the facades of several buildings fell down onto the sidewalk, being one of the reasons for the killing of a total of 9 people. The objective of this paper is to describe and analyze the failure patterns observed in reinforced concrete frame buildings with masonry infill walls ranging from 3 to 8 floors in height. Structural as well as non-structural masonry walls suffered important damage that led to redistributions of forces causing in some cases the failure of columns. The importance of the interaction between the structural frames and the infill panels is analyzed by means of non-linear Finite Element Models. The resulting load levels are compared with the member capacities and the changes of the mechanical properties during the seismic event are described and discussed. In the light of the results obtained the observed failure patterns are explained. Some comments are stated concerning the adequacy of the numerical models that are usually used during the design phase for the seismic analysis.

ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis presents an investigation on the behavior of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to explosions along with the numerical simulation of this phenomenon by the finite elements method. The work involves the study of the response of these structural elements by comparing the results of field tests at full scale and the calculations performed by the computer model. This procedure allows to verify the appropriateness or not of the latter. Firstly, the mechanical behavior of the material models that are likely to be used in the modelling of structures is explained. In addition, different ways of choosing explosive charges when conducting finite element methods are analyzed and discussed. Secondly, several experimental tests, which took place at the Laboratorio de Balística de Efectos at the Instituto Tecnológico de la Marañosa (ITM), in Madrid, are described in order to study the behavior of these reinforced concrete slabs. A method for the description of the slab damage level by the Schmidt hammer is proposed, which will make possible to compare the modelling results extracted from the computation experiments. Furthermore, an analytical method for determining the optimal mesh size to be used in the simulations is proposed. It is well known that the behavior of the models can be strongly influenced by the mesh size used. According to this, when modifiying the meshing density the damaged cannot be reached or do it prematurely, or excessive, respectively. Moreover, some material models include a regularization of the mesh size, but the present investigation evidenced that this procedure has a limited range of validity, even an optimal environment values are determined. The method proposed is based on the distribution of the internal energy of the system. Finally, several expecific numerical models have been performed by using LS-DYNA commercial software, considering all the aspects listed in the preceding paragraphs. Comparisons of the results extracted from the simulations and full scale experiments were carried out, noting that there exists a very good correlation between both of them. This fact demonstrates that the proposed research procedure is highly suitable for the modelling of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to blast loading.

One of the common failure modes of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in flexure with a bonded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) is intermediate crack (IC) debonding, which is originated at a critical section in the vicinity of flexural cracks and propagates to a plate end. Despite considerable research over the last years, few reliable and simplified IC debonding strength models have been developed. This paper firstly presents a one-dimensional model based on the discrete crack approach for concrete and the spectral element method for the numerical simulation of the IC debonding process. The progressive formation of flexural cracks and subsequent concrete-FRP interfacial debonding is formulated by the introduction of a new element able to represent both phenomena simultaneously without perturbing the numerical procedure. Furthermore, with the proposed model, high frequency dynamic response for these kinds of structures can also be obtained in a very simple and non-expensive way, which makes this procedure very useful as a tool for diagnoses and detection of debonding in its initial stage by monitoring the change in local dynamic characteristics.

The city of Lorca (Spain) was hit on May 11th, 2011, by two consecutive earth-quakes of magnitudes 4.6 and 5.2 Mw, causing casualties and important damage in buildings. Many of the damaged structures were reinforced concrete frames with wide beams. This study quantifies the expected level of damage on this structural type in the case of the Lorca earth-quake by means of a seismic index Iv that compares the energy input by the earthquake with the energy absorption/dissipation capacity of the structure. The prototype frames investigated represent structures designed in two time periods (1994–2002 and 2003–2008), in which the applicable codes were different. The influence of the masonry infill walls and the proneness of the frames to concentrate damage in a given story were further investigated through nonlinear dynamic response analyses. It is found that (1) the seismic index method predicts levels of damage that range from moderate/severe to complete collapse; this prediction is consistent with the observed damage; (2) the presence of masonry infill walls makes the structure very prone to damage concentration and reduces the overall seismic capacity of the building; and (3) a proper hierarchy of strength between beams and columns that guarantees the formation of a strong column-weak beam mechanism (as prescribed by seismic codes), as well as the adoption of counter-measures to avoid the negative interaction between non-structural infill walls and the main frame, would have reduced the level of damage from Iv=1 (collapse) to about Iv=0.5 (moderate/severe damage)

In order to reduce costs and time while improving quality, durability and sustainability in structural concrete constructions, a widely used material nowadays, special care must be taken in some crucial phases of the project and execution, including the structure design and calculation, the dosage, dumping and curing of concrete: another important aspect is the proper design and execution of assembly plans and construction details. The framework, a name designating the whole reinforcement bars cage already assembled as shown in the drawings, can be made up of several components and implies higher or lower industrialization degree. The framework costs constitute about one third of the price per cubic meter placed in concrete works. The best solutions from all points of view are clearly those involving an easier processing to achieve the same goal, and consequently carrying a high degree of industrialization, meaning quality and safety in the work. This thesis aims to provide an indepth analysis of a relatively new type of anchoring by plate known as headed reinforcement bars, which can potentially replace standard or L-shaped hooks, improving the cleaning of construction details and enabling a faster, more flexible, and therefore a more economical assembly. A literature review on the topic and an overview of typical applications is provided, followed by some examples of specific applications in real projects. Since a strict theoretical formulation used to provide the design plate dimensions has not yet been put forward, an equation is proposed for the side-face blowout strength of the anchorage, based on the capacity of concrete to carry concentrated loads in cases in which no transverse reinforcement is provided. The correlation of the calculated ultimate load with experimental results available in the literature is given. Besides, the proposed formulation can be expanded to cases in which a certain development length is available: using a software for nonlinear finite element analysis oriented to the study of reinforced concrete, numerical tests on the bond-bearing interaction are performed. The thesis ends with a testing of eight corner joints subjected to a closing moment, held in the Structures Laboratory of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, aiming to check whether the design of such plates as stated is adequate for these elements and whether an element with plate-anchored reinforcement is equivalent to one with a traditional construction detail.

The behaviour of the interface between the FRP and the concrete is the key factor controlling debonding failures in FRP-strengthened RC structures. This defect can cause reductions in static strength, structural integrity and the change in the dynamic behavior of the structure. The adverse effect on the dynamic behavior of the defects can be utilized as an effective means for identifying and assessing both the location and size of debonding at its earliest stages. The presence of debonding changes the structural dynamic characteristics and might be traced in modal parameters, dynamic strain and wave patterns etc. Detection of minor local defects, as those origin of a future debonding, requires working at high frequencies so that the wavelength of the excited is small and sensitive enough to detect local damage. The development of a spectral element method gives a large potential in high-frequency structural modeling. In contrast to the conventional finite element, since inertial properties are modeled exactly few elements are necessary to capture very accurate solutions at the highest frequencies in large regions. A wide variety of spectral elements have been developed for structural members over finite and semi-infinite regions. The objective of this paper is to develop a Spectral Finite Element Model to efficiently capture the behavior of intermediate debonding of a FRP strengthened RC beam during wave-based diagnostics.

Advanced composite materials are increasingly used in the strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The use of externally bonded strips made of fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) as strengthening method has gained widespread acceptance in recent years since it has many advantages over the traditional techniques. However, unfortunately, this strengthening method is often associated with a brittle and sudden failure caused by some form of FRP bond failure, originated at the termination of the FRP material or at intermediate areas in the vicinity of flexural cracks in the RC beam. Up to date, little effort in the early prediction of the debonding in its initial instants even though this effect is not noticeable by simple visual observation. An early detection of this phenomenon might help in taking actions to prevent future catastrophes. Fibre-optic Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are able to measure strains locally with high resolution and accuracy. Furthermore, as their physical size is extremely small compared with other strain measuring components, it enables to be embedded at the concrete-FRP interface for determining the strain distribution without influencing the mechanical properties of the host materials. This paper shows the development of a debonding identification methodology based on strains experimentally measured. For, it a simplified model is implemented to simulate the behaviour of FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete beams. This model is taken as a basis to. develop an model updating procedure able to detect minor debonding at the concrete-FRP interface from experimental strains obtained by using FBG sensors embedded at the interface

A structure vibrates according to the sum of its vibration modes, defined by their modal parameters (natural frequencies, damping ratios and modal shapes). These parameters can be identified through Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). Thus, a research team of the Technical University of Madrid has identified the modal properties of a reinforced-concrete-frame building in Madrid using the Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI) method and a time domain technique for the OMA. To complete the dynamic study of this building, a finite element model (FE) of this 19-floor building has been developed throughout this thesis. This model has been updated from its dynamic behavior identified by the OMA. The objectives of this thesis are to; (i) identify the structure with several SSI methods and using different time blocks in such a way that uncertainties due to the modal parameter estimation are quantified, (ii) develop a FEM of this building and tune this model from its dynamic behavior, and (iii) Assess the quality of the model, the modal parameters used in this updating process have been; thickness of slabs, material densities, modulus of elasticity, column dimensions and foundation boundary conditions. It has been shown that the final updated model represents the structure with a very good accuracy. Thus, this model might be used within a structural health monitoring framework (SHM). The study of the influence of changing environmental factors (such as temperature or wind) on the model parameters might be considered as a future work.

Abstract Nowadays, the external bonding of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) plates or sheets is increasingly used for the strengthening and retrofitting of reinforced concrete (RC) structures due to its numerous advantages. However, this kind of strengthening often leads to brittle failure modes being the most dominant failure mode the debonding induced by an intermediate crack (IC). In spite of its importance, the number of studies regarding the IC debonding mechanism and bond health monitoring is very limited. Methodologies able to monitor the long-term efficiency of bonding and successfully identify the initiation of FRP debonding constitute a challenge to be met. The main purpose of this thesisis the implementation of a reliable and effective methodology of damage identification able to detect intermediate crack debonding in FRP-strengthened RC beams. To achieve this goal, a model updating procedure based on numerical simulations and experimental tests has been implemented. For it, firstly, a simple and non-expensive one-dimensional model based on the discrete crack approach for concrete and the spectral element method has been developed. One very promising active non-destructive evaluation method for local monitoring is impedance-based structural health monitoring(SHM)using piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) sensor-actuators. The electrical impedance of the PZT can be directly related to the mechanical impedance of the host structural component where the PZT transducers are attached. Since the structural mechanical impedance will be affected by the presence of structural damage, comparisons of admittance (inverse of impedance) spectra at various times during the service period of the structure can be used as damage indicator. Any change in the spectra might be an indication of a change in the structural integrity. The electrical impedance is measured at high frequencies with which this methodology appears to be very sensitive to incipient damage in structural systems as desired for our application. Abonded-PZT-FRP spectral beam element approach based on an extension of the previous discrete crack approach is implemented in the calculation of the electrical impedance of the PZT transducer bonded to the FRP plates of a RC beam. This approach in conjunction with the experimental measurements of PZT actuator-sensors mounted on the structure is used to present an updating methodology to quantitatively detect interfacial debonding between a FRP strip and the host RC structure. The updating procedure is solved by using an ensemble particle swarm optimization approach with abagging algorithm, and the results demonstrate a big improvement for the performance and accuracy of the damage detection in the proposed problem. Additionally, an adaptive strategy of spectral element mesh has been also developed to detect damage location with experimental results, which shows the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed method to identify initial and incipient damages at its early stage. Lastly, multi-objective optimization has been carried out to detect debonding damage in a real scale FRP-strengthened RC beam by using impedance signatures. A net of PZT sensors is distributed along the beam to construct impedance-based multiple objectives under gradually induced damage scenario. By combining the spectral element model presented previously and an ensemble multi-objective PSO algorithm, the implemented damage detection process yields satisfactory predictions considering the scale and uncertainties of the structure. The obtained results prove the feasibility and capability of the aforementioned methods and also their potentials in real engineering applications.

The major development experienced by high speed in the main countries of the European Union, in the last 30 years, makes railway research one of the main references in the research field. It should also be mentioned that the emergence of the concept superhigh − speed makes research in the field of Railway Engineering continues to gain importance in major research centers in the countries in which this mode of transportation is already implemented or planned to be implemented. The characteristics that this transport has as rationale such as: effectiveness, efficiency, safety and comfort, may be compromised by several factors. The transition zones are defined in railway engineering as a region in which there is an abrupt change of track stiffness. This stiffness variation can affect the normal behavior for which the infrastructure has been designed, seriously compromising efficiency standards in the travel time, passenger comfort and significantly increasing the costs of track maintenance, if appropriate measures are not taken. In this thesis a detailed study of the transition zones has been performed, particularly of those in which there is a change in vertical stiffness of the track due to the presence of a reinforced concrete culvert. To perform such a study a numerical interaction analysis between the vehicle, the track and the structure has been developed. With this purpose a two-dimensional finite element model, experimentally calibrated, in a state of plane stress, has been used. The implemented numerical models have considered the effects of track irregularities and mechanical behavior of soil-structure interface, with the objective of reproducing as accurately as possible the dynamic interaction between the vehicle the track and the structure. Other effects such as the influence of train speed and differential settlement, due to secondary consolidation of the embankments on both sides of culvert, have also been analyzed. In this work, the interaction analysis has been carried out in two different phases. In the first part a simple interaction due to the passage of a bogie of a Eurostar train has been considered. Calculations derived from this phase have been named short-term analysis. In the second part, a multi-load assessment considering an Eurostar train bogie moving along the transition zone, has been performed. The objective here is to simulate a degradation process in which vertical deformation of the ballast layer was considered. Calculations derived from this phase have been named long-term analysis. The analyzed results show that the use of so-called contact elements is essential when one wants to analyze the influence of differential settlements, especially in embankment-structure transitions in which the wedge-shaped backfill does not reach the foundation base of the structure. Moreover, considering embankment settlement is extremely important when it is desired to perform an analysis of track degradation. In these cases the influence on the interaction behaviour between the vehicle and the track is very high, especially for higher values of speed train. Regarding the influence of the track irregularities, this study has proven that the track’s dynamic response is heavily influenced by the irregularity profile and that this influence is more important for higher train velocities. It should also be noted that the difference in results derived from consideration of irregularities profiles of different nature. The results coming from artificial profiles are generally very high, these might be more appropriate in order to study other effects, such as derailment safety. Results from real profiles, given by the monitoring works of different rail Managers, are softer and they fit better to the context of this thesis. The influence of irregularity profiles on the dynamic interaction between the train and the track is very important, especially for high-speeds of the train. Furthermore, the degradation phenomenon known as hanging sleepers, associated with transition zones, is very susceptible to the consideration of track irregularities, as it can be concluded from the long-term analysis.
