Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are spearheading the efforts taken to build and deploy systems aiming to accomplish the ultimate objectives of the Internet of Things. Due to the sensors WSNs nodes are provided with, and to their ubiquity and pervasive capabilities, these networks become extremely suitable for many applications that so-called conventional cabled or wireless networks are unable to handle. One of these still underdeveloped applications is monitoring physical parameters on a person. This is an especially interesting application regarding their age or activity, for any detected hazardous parameter can be notified not only to the monitored person as a warning, but also to any third party that may be helpful under critical circumstances, such as relatives or healthcare centers. We propose a system built to monitor a sportsman/woman during a workout session or performing a sport-related indoor activity. Sensors have been deployed by means of several nodes acting as the nodes of a WSN, along with a semantic middleware development used for hardware complexity abstraction purposes. The data extracted from the environment, combined with the information obtained from the user, will compose the basis of the services that can be obtained.

ABSTRACT In recent years, the Wireless Visual Sensor Network (WVSN) has drawn great interest in wireless communication research area. They enable a wealth of new applications such as building security control, image sensing, and target localization. However, nowadays wireless communication protocols (ZigBee, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth for example) cannot fully satisfy the demands of high data rate, low power consumption, short range, and high robustness requirements. New communication protocol is highly desired for such kind of applications. The Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless communication protocol, which has increased in importance for high data rate wireless communication field, are emerging as an important topic for WVSN research. UWB has emerged as a technology that offers great promise to satisfy the growing demand for low-cost, high-speed digital wireless indoor and home networks. The large bandwidth available, the potential for high data rate transmission, and the potential for low complexity and low power consumption, along with low implementation cost, all present a unique opportunity for UWB to become a widely adopted radio solution for future Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) applications. UWB is defined as any transmission that occupies a bandwidth of more than 20% of its center frequency, or more than 500 MHz. In 2002, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated that UWB radio transmission can legally operate in the range from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz at a transmitter power of -41.3 dBm/Hz. Under the FCC guidelines, the use of UWB technology can provide enormous capacity over short communication ranges. Considering Shannon’s capacity equations, increasing the channel capacity requires linear increasing in bandwidth, whereas similar channel capacity increases would require exponential increases in transmission power. In recent years, several different UWB developments has been widely studied in different area, among which, the MB-OFDM UWB wireless communication protocol is considered to be the leading choice and has recently been adopted in the ISO/IEC standard for WPANs. By combing the OFDM modulation and data transmission using frequency hopping techniques, the MB-OFDM UWB system is able to support various data rates, ranging from 55 to 480 Mbps, over distances up to 10 meters. The MB-OFDM technology is expected to consume very little power and silicon area, as well as provide low-cost solutions that can satisfy consumer market demands. To fulfill these expectations, MB-OFDM UWB research and development have to cope with several challenges, which consist of high-sensitivity synchronization, low- complexity constraints, strict power limitations, scalability, and flexibility. Such challenges require state-of-the-art digital signal processing expertise to develop systems that could fully take advantages of the UWB spectrum and support future indoor wireless applications. This thesis focuses on fully optimization for the MB-OFDM UWB digital baseband transceiver system, aiming at researching and designing a wireless communication subsystem for the Wireless Visual Sensor Networks (WVSNs) application. The inherent high complexity of the FFT/IFFT processor and synchronization system, and high operation frequency for all processing elements, becomes the bottleneck for low power MB-OFDM based UWB digital baseband system hardware design and implementation. The proposed transceiver system targets low power and low complexity under the premise of high performance. Optimizations are made at both algorithm and architecture level for each element of the transceiver system. The low-power hardwareefficient structures are firstly proposed for those core computation modules, i.e., the mixed-radix algorithm based pipelined architecture is proposed for the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT/IFFT) processor, and the cost-speed balanced Viterbi Decoder (VD) module is developed, in the aim of lowering the power consumption and increasing the processing speed. In addition, a low complexity sign-bit correlation based symbol timing synchronization scheme is presented so as to detect and synchronize the OFDM packets robustly and accurately. Moreover, several state-of-the-art technologies are used for developing other processing subsystems and an entire MB-OFDM digital baseband transceiver system is integrated. The target device for the proposed transceiver system is Xilinx Virtex 5 XC5VLX110T FPGA board. In order to validate the proposed transceiver system in the FPGA board, a unified algorithm-architecture-circuit hardware/software co-design environment for complex FPGA system development is presented in this work. The main objective of the proposed strategy is to find an efficient methodology for designing a configurable optimized FPGA system by using as few efforts as possible in system verification procedure, so as to speed up the system development period. The presented co-design methodology has the advantages of easy to use, covering all steps from algorithm proposal to hardware verification, and widely spread for almost all kinds of FPGA developments. Because only the digital baseband transceiver system is developed in this thesis, the validation of transmitting signals through wireless channel in real communication environments still requires the analog front-end and RF components. However, by using the aforementioned hardware/software co-simulation methodology, the transmitter and receiver digital baseband systems get the opportunity to communicate with each other through the channel models, which are proposed from the IEEE 802.15.3a research group, established in MATLAB. Thus, by simply adjust the characteristics of each channel model, e.g. mean excess delay and center frequency, we can estimate the transmission performance of the proposed transceiver system through different communication situations. The main contributions of this thesis are: • A novel mixed radix 128-point FFT algorithm by using multipath pipelined architecture is proposed. The complex multipliers for each processing stage are designed by using modified shift-add architectures. The system wordlength and twiddle word-length are compared and selected based on Signal to Quantization Noise Ratio (SQNR) and power analysis. • IFFT processor performance is analyzed under different Block Floating Point (BFP) arithmetic situations for overflow control, so as to find out the perfect architecture of IFFT algorithm based on the proposed FFT processor. • An innovative low complex timing synchronization and compensation scheme, which consists of Packet Detector (PD) and Timing Offset Estimation (TOE) functions, for MB-OFDM UWB receiver system is employed. By simplifying the cross-correlation and maximum likelihood functions to signbit only, the computational complexity is significantly reduced. • A 64 state soft-decision Viterbi Decoder system by using high speed radix-4 Add-Compare-Select architecture is proposed. Two-pointer Even algorithm is also introduced into the Trace Back unit in the aim of hardware-efficiency. • Several state-of-the-art technologies are integrated into the complete baseband transceiver system, in the aim of implementing a highly-optimized UWB communication system. • An improved design flow is proposed for complex system implementation which can be used for general Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) designs. The design method not only dramatically reduces the time for functional verification, but also provides automatic analysis such as errors and output delays for the implemented hardware systems. • A virtual communication environment is established for validating the proposed MB-OFDM transceiver system. This methodology is proved to be easy for usage and convenient for analyzing the digital baseband system without analog frontend under different communication environments. This PhD thesis is organized in six chapters. In the chapter 1 a brief introduction to the UWB field, as well as the related work, is done, along with the motivation of MBOFDM system development. In the chapter 2, the general information and requirement of MB-OFDM UWB wireless communication protocol is presented. In the chapter 3, the architecture of the MB-OFDM digital baseband transceiver system is presented. The design of the proposed algorithm and architecture for each processing element is detailed in this chapter. Design challenges of such system involve trade-off discussions among design complexity, power consumption, hardware cost, system performance, and some other aspects. All these factors are analyzed and discussed. In the chapter 4, the hardware/software co-design methodology is proposed. Each step of this design flow will be detailed by taking some examples that we met during system development. Then, taking advantages of this design strategy, the Virtual Communication procedure is carried out so as to test and analyze the proposed transceiver architecture. Experimental results from the co-simulation and synthesis report of the implemented FPGA system are given in the chapter 5. The chapter 6 includes conclusions and future work, as well as the results derived from this PhD work.
Wireless measurement system for structural health monitoring with high time synchronization accuracy
Resumo:
Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems have excellent potential to improve the regular operation and maintenance of structures. Wireless networks (WNs) have been used to avoid the high cost of traditional generic wired systems. The most important limitation of SHM wireless systems is time-synchronization accuracy, scalability, and reliability. A complete wireless system for structural identification under environmental load is designed, implemented, deployed, and tested on three different real bridges. Our contribution ranges from the hardware to the graphical front end. System goal is to avoid the main limitations of WNs for SHM particularly in regard to reliability, scalability, and synchronization. We reduce spatial jitter to 125 ns, far below the 120 μs required for high-precision acquisition systems and much better than the 10-μs current solutions, without adding complexity. The system is scalable to a large number of nodes to allow for dense sensor coverage of real-world structures, only limited by a compromise between measurement length and mandatory time to obtain the final result. The system addresses a myriad of problems encountered in a real deployment under difficult conditions, rather than a simulation or laboratory test bed.

ABSTRACT With the increasing utilization of Internet services and cloud computing by most organizations (both private and public), it is clear that computing is becoming the 5th utility (along with water, electricity, telephony and gas). These technologies are used for almost all types of systems, and the number is increasing, including Critical Infrastructure systems. Even if Critical Infrastructure systems appear not to rely directly on cloud services, there may be hidden inter-dependencies. This is true even for private cloud computing, which seems more secure and reliable. The critical systems can began in some cases with a clear and simple design, but evolved as described by Egan to "rafted" networks. Because they are usually controlled by one or few organizations, even when they are complex systems, their dependencies can be understood. The organization oversees and manages changes. These CI systems have been affected by the introduction of new ICT models like global communications, PCs and the Internet. Even virtualization took more time to be adopted by Critical systems, due to their strategic nature, but once that these technologies have been proven in other areas, at the end they are adopted as well, for different reasons such as costs. A new technology model is happening now based on some previous technologies (virtualization, distributing and utility computing, web and software services) that are offered in new ways and is called cloud computing. The organizations are migrating more services to the cloud; this will have impact in their internal complexity and in the reliability of the systems they are offering to the organization itself and their clients. Not always this added complexity and associated risks to their reliability are seen. As well, when two or more CI systems are interacting, the risks of one can affect the rest, sharing the risks. This work investigates the use of cloud computing by critical systems, and is focused in the dependencies and reliability of these systems. Some examples are presented together with the associated risks. A framework is introduced for analysing the dependability and resilience of a system that relies on cloud services and how to improve them. As part of the framework, the concepts of micro and macro dependability are introduced to explain the internal and external dependability on services supplied by an external cloud. A pharmacovigilance model system has been used for framework validation.

Sensing systems in living bodies offer a large variety of possible different configurations and philosophies able to be emulated in artificial sensing systems. Motion detection is one of the areas where different animals adopt different solutions and, in most of the cases, these solutions reflect a very sophisticated form. One of them, the mammalian visual system, presents several advantages with respect to the artificial ones. The main objective of this paper is to present a system, based on this biological structure, able to detect motion, its sense and its characteristics. The configuration adopted responds to the internal structure of the mammalian retina, where just five types of cells arranged in five layers are able to differentiate a large number of characteristics of the image impinging onto it. Its main advantage is that the detection of these properties is based purely on its hardware. A simple unit, based in a previous optical logic cell employed in optical computing, is the basis for emulating the different behaviors of the biological neurons. No software is present and, in this way, no possible interference from outside affects to the final behavior. This type of structure is able to work, once the internal configuration is implemented, without any further attention. Different possibilities are present in the architecture to be presented: detection of motion, of its direction and intensity. Moreover, some other characteristics, as symmetry may be obtained.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have shown their potentials in various applications, which bring a lot of benefits to users from both research and industrial areas. For many setups, it is envisioned thatWSNs will consist of tens to hundreds of nodes that operate on small batteries. However due to the diversity of the deployed environments and resource constraints on radio communication, sensing ability and energy supply, it is a very challenging issue to plan optimized WSN topology and predict its performance before real deployment. During the network planning phase, the connectivity, coverage, cost, network longevity and service quality should all be considered. Therefore it requires designers coping with comprehensive and interdisciplinary knowledge, including networking, radio engineering, embedded system and so on, in order to efficiently construct a reliable WSN for any specific types of environment. Nowadays there is still a lack of the analysis and experiences to guide WSN designers to efficiently construct WSN topology successfully without many trials. Therefore, simulation is a feasible approach to the quantitative analysis of the performance of wireless sensor networks. However the existing planning algorithms and tools, to some extent, have serious limitations to practically design reliable WSN topology: Only a few of them tackle the 3D deployment issue, and an overwhelming number of works are proposed to place devices in 2D scheme. Without considering the full dimension, the impacts of environment to the performance of WSN are not completely studied, thus the values of evaluated metrics such as connectivity and sensing coverage are not sufficiently accurate to make proper decision. Even fewer planning methods model the sensing coverage and radio propagation by considering the realistic scenario where obstacles exist. Radio signals propagate with multi-path phenomenon in the real world, in which direct paths, reflected paths and diffracted paths contribute to the received signal strength. Besides, obstacles between the path of sensor and objects might block the sensing signals, thus create coverage hole in the application. None of the existing planning algorithms model the network longevity and packet delivery capability properly and practically. They often employ unilateral and unrealistic formulations. The optimization targets are often one-sided in the current works. Without comprehensive evaluation on the important metrics, the performance of planned WSNs can not be reliable and entirely optimized. Modeling of environment is usually time consuming and the cost is very high, while none of the current works figure out any method to model the 3D deployment environment efficiently and accurately. Therefore many researchers are trapped by this issue, and their algorithms can only be evaluated in the same scenario, without the possibility to test the robustness and feasibility for implementations in different environments. In this thesis, we propose a novel planning methodology and an intelligent WSN planning tool to assist WSN designers efficiently planning reliable WSNs. First of all, a new method is proposed to efficiently and automatically model the 3D indoor and outdoor environments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the advantages of image understanding algorithm are applied to automatically reconstruct 3D outdoor and indoor scenarios for signal propagation and network planning purpose. The experimental results indicate that the proposed methodology is able to accurately recognize different objects from the satellite images of the outdoor target regions and from the scanned floor plan of indoor area. Its mechanism offers users a flexibility to reconstruct different types of environment without any human interaction. Thereby it significantly reduces human efforts, cost and time spent on reconstructing a 3D geographic database and allows WSN designers concentrating on the planning issues. Secondly, an efficient ray-tracing engine is developed to accurately and practically model the radio propagation and sensing signal on the constructed 3D map. The engine contributes on efficiency and accuracy to the estimated results. By using image processing concepts, including the kd-tree space division algorithm and modified polar sweep algorithm, the rays are traced efficiently without detecting all the primitives in the scene. The radio propagation model iv is proposed, which emphasizes not only the materials of obstacles but also their locations along the signal path. The sensing signal of sensor nodes, which is sensitive to the obstacles, is benefit from the ray-tracing algorithm via obstacle detection. The performance of this modelling method is robust and accurate compared with conventional methods, and experimental results imply that this methodology is suitable for both outdoor urban scenes and indoor environments. Moreover, it can be applied to either GSM communication or ZigBee protocol by varying frequency parameter of the radio propagation model. Thirdly, WSN planning method is proposed to tackle the above mentioned challenges and efficiently deploy reliable WSNs. More metrics (connectivity, coverage, cost, lifetime, packet latency and packet drop rate) are modeled more practically compared with other works. Especially 3D ray tracing method is used to model the radio link and sensing signal which are sensitive to the obstruction of obstacles; network routing is constructed by using AODV protocol; the network longevity, packet delay and packet drop rate are obtained via simulating practical events in WSNet simulator, which to the best of our knowledge, is the first time that network simulator is involved in a planning algorithm. Moreover, a multi-objective optimization algorithm is developed to cater for the characteristics of WSNs. The capability of providing multiple optimized solutions simultaneously allows users making their own decisions accordingly, and the results are more comprehensively optimized compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms. iMOST is developed by integrating the introduced algorithms, to assist WSN designers efficiently planning reliable WSNs for different configurations. The abbreviated name iMOST stands for an Intelligent Multi-objective Optimization Sensor network planning Tool. iMOST contributes on: (1) Convenient operation with a user-friendly vision system; (2) Efficient and automatic 3D database reconstruction and fast 3D objects design for both indoor and outdoor environments; (3) It provides multiple multi-objective optimized 3D deployment solutions and allows users to configure the network properties, hence it can adapt to various WSN applications; (4) Deployment solutions in the 3D space and the corresponding evaluated performance are visually presented to users; and (5) The Node Placement Module of iMOST is available online as well as the source code of the other two rebuilt heuristics. Therefore WSN designers will be benefit from v this tool on efficiently constructing environment database, practically and efficiently planning reliable WSNs for both outdoor and indoor applications. With the open source codes, they are also able to compare their developed algorithms with ours to contribute to this academic field. Finally, solid real results are obtained for both indoor and outdoor WSN planning. Deployments have been realized for both indoor and outdoor environments based on the provided planning solutions. The measured results coincide well with the estimated results. The proposed planning algorithm is adaptable according to the WSN designer’s desirability and configuration, and it offers flexibility to plan small and large scale, indoor and outdoor 3D deployments. The thesis is organized in 7 chapters. In Chapter 1, WSN applications and motivations of this work are introduced, the state-of-the-art planning algorithms and tools are reviewed, challenges are stated out and the proposed methodology is briefly introduced. In Chapter 2, the proposed 3D environment reconstruction methodology is introduced and its performance is evaluated for both outdoor and indoor environment. The developed ray-tracing engine and proposed radio propagation modelling method are described in details in Chapter 3, their performances are evaluated in terms of computation efficiency and accuracy. Chapter 4 presents the modelling of important metrics of WSNs and the proposed multi-objective optimization planning algorithm, the performance is compared with the other state-of-the-art planning algorithms. The intelligent WSN planning tool iMOST is described in Chapter 5. RealWSN deployments are prosecuted based on the planned solutions for both indoor and outdoor scenarios, important data are measured and results are analysed in Chapter 6. Different parameters are used to quantify the maturity of fruits at or near harvest (shape, color, flesh texture and internal composition). Flesh firmness is a critical handling parameter for fruits such as peach, pear and apple. Results of previous studies conducted by different researchers have shown that impact techniques can be used to evaluate firmness of fruits. A prototype impact system for firmness sorting of fruits was developed by Chen and Ruiz-Altisent (Chen et al, 1996). This sensor was mounted and tested successfully on a 3 m section of a commercial conveyor belt (Chen et al, 1998). This is a further development of the on-line impact system for firmness sorting of fruits. The design of the sensor has been improved and it has been mounted on a experimental fruit packing line (Ortiz-Cañavate et al 1999).

Cloud computing and, more particularly, private IaaS, is seen as a mature technology with a myriad solutions tochoose from. However, this disparity of solutions and products has instilled in potential adopters the fear of vendor and data lock-in. Several competing and incompatible interfaces and management styles have given even more voice to these fears. On top of this, cloud users might want to work with several solutions at the same time, an integration that is difficult to achieve in practice. In this paper, we propose a management architecture that tries to tackle these problems; it offers a common way of managing several cloud solutions, and an interface that can be tailored to the needs of the user. This management architecture is designed in a modular way, and using a generic information model. We have validated our approach through the implementation of the components needed for this architecture to support a sample private IaaS solution: OpenStack

The size and complexity of cloud environments make them prone to failures. The traditional approach to achieve a high dependability for these systems relies on constant monitoring. However, this method is purely reactive. A more proactive approach is provided by online failure prediction (OFP) techniques. In this paper, we describe a OFP system for private IaaS platforms, currently under development, that combines di_erent types of data input, including monitoring information, event logs, and failure data. In addition, this system operates at both the physical and virtual planes of the cloud, taking into account the relationships between nodes and failure propagation mechanisms that are unique to cloud environments.

This paper presents a novel method for the calibration of a parallel robot, which allows a more accurate configuration instead of a configuration based on nominal parameters. It is used, as the main sensor with one camera installed in the robot hand that determines the relative position of the robot with respect to a spherical object fixed in the working area of the robot. The positions of the end effector are related to the incremental positions of resolvers of the robot motors. A kinematic model of the robot is used to find a new group of parameters, which minimizes errors in the kinematic equations. Additionally, properties of the spherical object and intrinsic camera parameters are utilized to model the projection of the object in the image and thereby improve spatial measurements. Finally, several working tests, static and tracking tests are executed in order to verify how the robotic system behaviour improves by using calibrated parameters against nominal parameters. In order to emphasize that, this proposed new method uses neither external nor expensive sensor. That is why new robots are useful in teaching and research activities.

With the advent of cloud computing model, distributed caches have become the cornerstone for building scalable applications. Popular systems like Facebook [1] or Twitter use Memcached [5], a highly scalable distributed object cache, to speed up applications by avoiding database accesses. Distributed object caches assign objects to cache instances based on a hashing function, and objects are not moved from a cache instance to another unless more instances are added to the cache and objects are redistributed. This may lead to situations where some cache instances are overloaded when some of the objects they store are frequently accessed, while other cache instances are less frequently used. In this paper we propose a multi-resource load balancing algorithm for distributed cache systems. The algorithm aims at balancing both CPU and Memory resources among cache instances by redistributing stored data. Considering the possible conflict of balancing multiple resources at the same time, we give CPU and Memory resources weighted priorities based on the runtime load distributions. A scarcer resource is given a higher weight than a less scarce resource when load balancing. The system imbalance degree is evaluated based on monitoring information, and the utility load of a node, a unit for resource consumption. Besides, since continuous rebalance of the system may affect the QoS of applications utilizing the cache system, our data selection policy ensures that each data migration minimizes the system imbalance degree and hence, the total reconfiguration cost can be minimized. An extensive simulation is conducted to compare our policy with other policies. Our policy shows a significant improvement in time efficiency and decrease in reconfiguration cost.

The emergence of cloud datacenters enhances the capability of online data storage. Since massive data is stored in datacenters, it is necessary to effectively locate and access interest data in such a distributed system. However, traditional search techniques only allow users to search images over exact-match keywords through a centralized index. These techniques cannot satisfy the requirements of content based image retrieval (CBIR). In this paper, we propose a scalable image retrieval framework which can efficiently support content similarity search and semantic search in the distributed environment. Its key idea is to integrate image feature vectors into distributed hash tables (DHTs) by exploiting the property of locality sensitive hashing (LSH). Thus, images with similar content are most likely gathered into the same node without the knowledge of any global information. For searching semantically close images, the relevance feedback is adopted in our system to overcome the gap between low-level features and high-level features. We show that our approach yields high recall rate with good load balance and only requires a few number of hops.

This paper presents a novel self-timed multi-purpose sensor especially conceived for Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The aim of the sensor is to measure performance variations during the life-cycle of the device, such as process variability, critical path timing and temperature variations. The proposed topology, through the use of both combinational and sequential FPGA elements, amplifies the time of a signal traversing a delay chain to produce a pulse whose width is the sensor’s measurement. The sensor is fully self-timed, avoiding the need for clock distribution networks and eliminating the limitations imposed by the system clock. One single off- or on-chip time-to-digital converter is able to perform digitization of several sensors in a single operation. These features allow for a simplified approach for designers wanting to intertwine a multi-purpose sensor network with their application logic. Employed as a temperature sensor, it has been measured to have an error of ±0.67 °C, over the range of 20–100 °C, employing 20 logic elements with a 2-point calibration.
