The application of liquid metal technology in fusion devices requires R&D related to many phenomena: interaction between liquid metals and structural material as corrosion, erosion and passivation techniques; magneto-hydrodynamics; free surface fluid-dynamics and any other physical aspect that will be needed for their safe reliable operation. In particular, there is a significant shortage of experimental facilities dedicated to the development of the lithium technology. In the framework of the TECHNOFUSION project, an experimental laboratory devoted to the lithium technology development is proposed, in order to shed some light in the path to IFMIF and the design of chamber's first wall and divertors. The conceptual design foresee a development in two stages, the first one consisting on a material testing loop. The second stage proposes the construction of a mock-up of the IFMIF target that will allow to assess the behaviour of a free-surface lithium target under vacuum conditions. In this paper, such conceptual design is addressed.

Concrete is nowadays one of the most widely used building materials because of its good mechanical properties, moldability and production economy, among other advantages. As it is known, it has high compressive and low tensile strengths and for this reason it is reinforced with steel bars to form reinforced concrete, a material that has become the most important constructive solution of our time. Despite being such a widely used material, there are some aspects of concrete performance that are not yet fully understood, as it is the case of its response to the effects of an explosion. This is a topic of particular relevance because the events, both intentional and accidental, in which a structure is subjected to an explosion are, unfortunately, relatively common. The loading of a structure due to an explosive event occurs due to the impact of the pressure shock wave generated in the detonation. The application of this load on the structure is very fast and of very short duration. Such actions are called impulsive loads, and can be up to four orders of magnitude faster than the dynamic loads imposed by an earthquake. Consequently, it is not surprising that their effects on structures and materials are very different than those that cause the loads usually considered in engineering. This thesis broadens the knowledge about the material behavior of concrete subjected to explosions. To that end, it is crucial to have experimental results of concrete structures subjected to explosions. These types of results are difficult to find in the scientific literature, as these tests have traditionally been carried out by armies of different countries and the results obtained are classified. Moreover, in experimental campaigns with explosives conducted by civil institutions the high cost of accessing explosives and the lack of proper test fields does not allow for the testing of a large number of samples. For this reason, the experimental scatter is usually not controlled. However, in reinforced concrete elements subjected to explosions the experimental dispersion is very pronounced. First, due to the heterogeneity of concrete, and secondly, because of the difficulty inherent to testing with explosions, for reasons such as difficulties in the boundary conditions, variability of the explosive, or even atmospheric changes. To overcome these drawbacks, in this thesis we have designed a novel device that allows for testing up to four concrete slabs under the same detonation, which apart from providing a statistically representative number of samples, represents a significant saving in costs. A number of 28 slabs were tested using this device. The slabs were both reinforced and plain concrete, and two different concrete mixes were used. Besides having experimental data, it is also important to have computational tools for the analysis and design of structures subjected to explosions. Despite the existence of several analytical methods, numerical simulation techniques nowadays represent the most advanced and versatile alternative for the assessment of structural elements subjected to impulsive loading. However, to obtain reliable results it is crucial to have material constitutive models that take into account the parameters that govern the behavior for the load case under study. In this regard it is noteworthy that most of the developed constitutive models for concrete at high strain rates arise from the ballistic field, dominated by large compressive stresses in the local environment of the area affected by the impact. In the case of concrete elements subjected to an explosion, the compressive stresses are much more moderate, while tensile stresses usually cause material failure. This thesis discusses the validity of some of the available models, confirming that the parameters governing the failure of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to blast are the tensile strength and softening behaviour after failure. Based on these results we have developed a constitutive model for concrete at high strain rates, which only takes into account the ultimate tensile strength. This model is based on the embedded Cohesive Crack Model with Strong Discontinuity Approach developed by Planas and Sancho, which has proved its ability in predicting the tensile fracture of plain concrete elements. The model has been modified for its implementation in the commercial explicit integration program LS-DYNA, using hexahedral finite elements and incorporating the dependence of the strain rate, to allow for its use in dynamic domain. The model is strictly local and does not require remeshing nor prior knowledge of the crack path. This constitutive model has been used to simulate two experimental campaigns, confirming the hypothesis that the failure of concrete elements subjected to explosions is governed by their tensile response, being of particular relevance the softening behavior of concrete.

Classical spherical gradient index (GRIN) lenses (such as Maxwell Fish Eye lens, Eaton lens, Luneburg lens, etc.) design procedure using the Abel integral equation is reviewed and reorganized. Each lens is fully defined by a function called the angle of flight which describes the ray deflection through the lens. The radial refractive index distribution is obtained by applying a linear integral transformation to the angle of flight. The interest of this formulation is in the linearity of the integral transformation which allows us to derive new solutions from linear combinations of known lenses. Beside the review of the classical GRIN designs, we present a numerical method for GRIN lenses defined by the Abel integral equation with fixed limits, which is an ill-posed problem.

ABSTRACT This Ph. D. work describes a number of investigations that were performed along the years 2008 to 2011, as a preparation for the study and design of a coaxial cryogenic reference noise standard. Reliable and traceable measurement underpins the welfare of a modern society and plays a critical role in supporting economic competitiveness, manufacturing and trade as well as quality of life. In our modern world, a well developed measurement infrastructure gives confidence in many aspects of our daily life, for example by enabling the development and manufacturing of reliable, high quality and innovative products; by supporting industry to be competitive and sustainable in its production; by removing technical barriers to trade and supporting fair trade; by ensuring safety and effectiveness of healthcare; by giving response to the major challenges in key sectors such energy and environment, etc. With all this in mind we have developed a primary standard thermal noise with the aim of providing the Spanish metrology system with a new primary standard for noise reference. This standard will allow development of reliable and traceable measurements in the field of calibration and measurement of electromagnetic noise RF and microwave devices. This standard has been designed to work in the frequency range from 10 MHz to 26.5 GHz, meeting the following specifications: 1. Noise temperature output is to be nominally ~ 83 K. 2. Noise temperature uncertainty less than ± 1 K in the frequency range from 0.01 to 26.5 GHz. 3. Broadband performance requires as low a reflection coefficient as possible from 0.01 to 26.5 GHz. The present Ph. D. work is divided into three clearly differentiated parts. The first one, which comprises Chapters 1 to 5, presents the whole process of simulation and adjustment of the main parameters of the device in order to define those of them which are critical for the manufacturing of the device. Next, the second part consists of Chapter 6 where the necessary computations to obtain the output noise temperature of the device are carried out. The third and last part, Chapter 7, is devoted to the estimation of the uncertainty related to the noise temperature of the noise primary standard as obtained in the preceding chapter. More specifically, Chapter 1 provides a thorough introduction to the scientific and technological environment where this research takes place. It also details the objectives to be achieved and presents the methodology used to achieve them. Chapter 2 describes the characterization and selection of the bead dielectric material inside the transmission line, intended to connect the two coaxial conductors equalizing the temperature between the two of them and thus keeping the characteristic impedance constant for the whole standard. In addition the dielectric properties of liquid nitrogen are analyzed in order to assess their influence on the impedance of the transmission line. Chapter 3 analyzes the behavior of two different loads and of a commercial airline when subjected to cryogenic working conditions. This study is intended to obtain the variation in the reflection coefficient when the temperature changes from room to cryogenic temperature, and to check whether these devices can be damaged as a result of working at cryogenic temperatures. Also we try to see whether the load changes its behavior after successive cycles of cooling / heating, in order to obtain a bound for the allowed variation of the reflection coefficient of the load. Chapter 4 analyzes the ring structure of the dielectric material used in the NBS technical note 1074 of NIST, in order to obtain its scattering parameters that will be used for computation of its effect upon the reflection coefficient of the whole coaxial structure. Subsequently, we perform a further investigation with the aim of improving the design of NBS technical note 1074 of NIST, and modifications are introduced in the geometry of the transition area in order to reduce the reflection it produces. We first analyze the ring, specifically the influence of the radius of inner conductor of the bead, and then make changes in its geometry so that it presents the same characteristic impedance as that of the line. Finally we analytically obtain the relationship between the inner conductor radius and the radius of the transition from ring, in order to ensure the heat flow through the transition thus keeping the same reflection coefficient, and at the same time meeting the robustness requirements and the feasibility of manufacturing. Chapter 5 analyzes the thermal behavior of the noise standard and its influence on the conductivity of metallic materials. Both possibilities are raised that the liquid nitrogen is kept outside the line or that it penetrates inside. In both cases, given the rotational symmetry of the structure, we have simulated a section of coaxial line, i.e. the equivalent two-dimensional problem has been resolved, although the results are applicable to the actual three-dimensional structure. For thermal simulation Matlab™ PDE Toolbox has been used. In Chapter 6 we compute the output noise temperature of the device. The starting point is the analysis of the contribution to the overall noise temperature of each section making up the standard. Moreover the influence of the variations in the parameters of all elements of the standard is analyzed, specifically the variation of the reflection coefficient along the entire device. Once the electromagnetic noise standard has been described and analyzed, in Chapter 7 we describe the steps followed to estimate the uncertainty of the output electromagnetic noise temperature. This is done using two methods, the classic analytical approach following the Guide to the Estimation of Uncertainty [GUM95] and numerical simulations made with the Monte Carlo method. Chapter 8 discusses the conclusions and achievements. During the development of this thesis, a novel device was obtained which was potentially patentable, and which was finally registered through the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) in Madrid, in accordance with the provisions of Article 20 of Law 11/1986 about Patents, dated March 20th, 1986. It was registered under the denomination Broadband Thermal Noise Primary Standard (Reference P-101061) dated February 7th, 2011.

ABSTRACT Technical systems are becoming more complex, they incorporate more advanced functionalities, they are more integrated with other systems and they are deployed in less controlled environments. All this supposes a more demanding and uncertain scenario for control systems, which are also required to be more autonomous and dependable. Autonomous adaptivity is a current challenge for extant control technologies. The ASys research project proposes to address it by moving the responsibility for adaptivity from the engineers at design time to the system at run-time. This thesis has intended to advance in the formulation and technical reification of ASys principles of model-based self-cognition and having systems self-handle at runtime for robust autonomy. For that it has focused on the biologically inspired capability of self-awareness, and explored the possibilities to embed it into the very architecture of control systems. Besides self-awareness, other themes related to the envisioned solution have been explored: functional modeling, software modeling, patterns technology, components technology, fault tolerance. The state of the art in fields relevant for the issues of self-awareness and adaptivity has been analysed: cognitive architectures, fault-tolerant control, and software architectural reflection and autonomic computing. The extant and evolving ASys Theoretical Framework for cognitive autonomous systems has been adapted to provide a basement for this selfhood-centred analysis and to conceptually support the subsequent development of our solution. The thesis proposes a general design solution for building self-aware autonomous systems. Its central idea is the integration of a metacontroller in the control architecture of the autonomous system, capable of perceiving the functional state of the control system and reconfiguring it if necessary at run-time. This metacontrol solution has been formalised into four design patterns: i) the Metacontrol Pattern, which defines the integration of a metacontrol subsystem, controlling the domain control system through an interface provided by its implementation component platform, ii) the Epistemic Control Loop pattern, which defines a modelbased cognitive control loop that can be applied to the design of such a metacontroller, iii) the Deep Model Reflection pattern proposes a solution to produce the online executable model used by the metacontroller by model-to-model transformation from the engineering model, and, finally, iv) the Functional Metacontrol pattern, which proposes to structure the metacontroller in two loops, one for controlling the configuration of components of the controller, and another one on top of the former, controlling the functions being realised by that configuration; this way the functional and structural concerns become decoupled. The OM Architecture and the TOMASys metamodel are the core pieces of the architectural framework developed to reify this patterned solution. The TOMASys metamodel has been developed for representing the structure and its relation to the functional requirements of any autonomous system. The OM architecture is a blueprint for building a metacontroller according to the patterns. This metacontroller can be integrated on top of any component-based control architecture. At the core of its operation lies a TOMASys model of the control system. An engineering process and accompanying assets have been constructed to complete and exploit the architectural framework. The OM Engineering Process defines the process to follow to develop the metacontrol subsystem from the functional model of the controller of the autonomous system. The OMJava library provides a domain and application-independent implementation of an OM Metacontroller than can be used in the implementation phase of OMEP. Finally, the complete solution has been validated in the development of an autonomous mobile robot that incorporates an OM metacontroller. The functional selfawareness and adaptivity properties achieved thanks to the metacontrol system have been validated in different scenarios. In these scenarios the robot was able to overcome failures in the control system thanks to reconfigurations performed by the metacontroller.

The HiPER reactor design is exploring different reaction chambers. In this study, we tackle the neutronicsand activation studies of a preliminary reaction chamber based in the following technologies: unpro-tected dry wall for the First Wall, self-cooled lead lithium blanket, and independent low activation steelVacuum Vessel. The most critical free parameter in this stage is the blanket thickness, as a function ofthe6Li enrichment. After a parametric study, we select for study both a ?thin? and ?thick? blanket, with?high? and ?low?6Li enrichment respectively, to reach a TBR = 1.1. To help to make a choice, we com-pute, for both blanket options, in addition to the TBR, the energy amplification factor, the tritium partialpressure, the203Hg and210Po total activity in the LiPb loop, and the Vacuum Vessel thickness requiredto guarantee the reweldability during its lifetime. The thin blanket shows a superior performance in thesafety related issues and structural viability, but it operates at higher6Li enrichment. It is selected forfurther improvements. The Vacuum Vessel shows to be unviable in both cases, with the thickness varyingbetween 39 and 52 cm. Further chamber modifications, such as the introduction of a neutron reflector, are required to exploit the benefits of the thin blanket with a reasonable Vacuum Vessel.

European Universities are involved in series of great changes regarding teaching and education organization during the last few years. The origin of these changes is the creation of the so-called European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which main target is to harmonize the different University studies throughout Europe. As a consequence, most of the programs of studies in all degrees are suffering changes in order to converge to common structures. Taking advantage of the actual process, some European universities are moving from traditional Agricultural Engineering programs to a more wide discipline named recently as Biosystems Engineering, which is a science- based engineering discipline that integrates engineering science and design with applied biological, environmental and agricultural sciences, broadening in this way the area of application of Engineering sciences not strictly to agricultural sciences, but to the biologic al sciences in general, including the agricultural sciences. This paper presents a comparative study of different Bachelor of Science degrees offered by American and European Universities in the field of Agricultural/Biosystems Engineering. To carry out the analysis 40 programs accredited by ABET in American Universities and 50 European programs. Among other questions, the total number of credits, the number of semesters, the kind of modules and the distribution of subjects in groups (Basic Sciences, Engineering Fundamentals, Agricultural/Biological Sciences, Humanities & Economic Sciences, Applied Agricultural/Biological Engineering and electives) are discussed in the paper. The information provided can be an useful starting point in future definitions of new or renewed degrees with the aim of advancing in internationalization of the programs and helping student’s mobility.

The principle of complexity as the evolution vector of the gothic style was an idea largely developed by Paul Frankl. The high complexity reached in the 15th and 16th centuries was possible thanks to the geometrical resources developed in the workshops of the medieval stonemasons. The search for more sophisticated designs was possible also with the higher standardization, so that the most complex ribbed vault could be built with ribs that had all the same curvature and with voussoirs that were therefore identical. Spanish Gothic architecture has been deeply studied from a historical and artistic point of view. The present paper, as a complement to these analyses, aims to point out some of the geometrical methods and technological improvements that late medieval masons were able to develop. In that way, some selected vaults have been measured, in order to study their geometry and design process. Also scale models of some vaults have been built at the Escuela de Arquitectura (Madrid) to validate these geometrical principles. More than just a research method, the scale models allow to understand the medieval construction techniques, and they are a powerful pedagogical tool with which pupils can reach a rewarding experience based on the “medieval-way” praxis.

Experiments were conducted in the Madrid CEDEX facilities in a 30 m long, 3 m wide, 1/150 scale flume. The bulk carrier ship is 205 m long, 29 m wide and 18 m in height with a draught of 13 m, and has been subjected to irregular waves with significant heights from 2 m to 4 m and peak periods from 6 s to 12 s at a depth of 15 m, all prototype dimensions. Three probes were placed between the wave paddle and the ship to record incident and reflected waves and four probes were placed between the ship and the coastline to measure the transmitted waves. Transmission, reflection and dissipation coefficients (Ct, Cr, Cd) were calculated to determine wave attenuation. Results show good shelter in the lee of the ship with values of Ct under 0.5 for peak periods from 6 s to 11 s. In addition, forces on the mooring chains were measured showing maximum values of about 2000 tons at a 10 speak period. Finally, two analytical models were used to determine the shoreline’s response to the ship’s protection and to assess the possible forming of salients or tombolos. According to the results, salients - but not tombolos - are formed in all tests.

This work presents the main experimental results obtained from the study of plaster test pieces and boards with addition of various volumetric rubber fractions from mechanical grinding of end-of-life tires (ELTs), in three different particle size gradations. It includes a description of the materials employed, and their proportions. The physical and mechanical properties, as well as the thermal conductivity and acoustic insulation properties are analyzed. Experimental results obtained for specimens with addition of recycled rubber are compared with similar ones, carried out on specimens of plaster of identical features without any addition, evaluating the influence of the particle size and mixture proportions. An improvement in thermal and acoustic performance has been obtained as well as a reduction in density, and as a result, some constructive applications for paving and slabs in rehabilitation works are proposed.

The "Bio-climatic Design Handbook: guidelines for the development of planning regulations" is a tool for urban planning and design professionals planning for the construction of public space taking into account bioclimatic and environmental standards. Based on environmental conditions assessment, urban design guidelines are given. These take into account various scales; from the territory to the microclimatic reality. From these general keys for the design of public space the handbook performs recommendations on specific case studies. The application of bioclimatic techniques in urban design promotes comfort in the public space and the respect for the existing environment, while it influences the energy consumption of buildings that conform this open space. The tool was developed in the context of BIOURB project, where Spain and Portugal cooperate writing this bilingual handbook. The case studies are located in this cross-border region.

The use of techniques such as envelope tracking (ET) and envelope elimination and restoration (EER) can improve the efficiency of radio frequency power amplifiers (RFPA). In both cases, high-bandwidth DC/DC converters called envelope amplifiers (EA) are used to modulate the supply voltage of the RFPA. This paper addresses the analysis and design of a modified two-phase Buck converter optimized to operate as EA. The effects of multiphase operation on the tracking capabilities are analyzed. The use of a fourth-order output filter is proposed to increase the attenuation of the harmonics generated by the PWM operation, thus allowing a reduction of the ratio between the switching frequency and the converter bandwidth. The design of the output filter is addressed considering envelope tracking accuracy and distortion caused by the side bands arising from the nonlinear modulation process. Finally, the proposed analysis and design methods are supported by simulation results, as well as demonstrated by experiments obtained using two 100-W, 10-MHz, two-phase Buck EAs capable of accurately tracking a 1.5-MHz bandwidth OFDM signal.

"Slow Fashion" attempts to offset the demand for fast fashion and mass production (Fletcher, 2007). Consumers' response to sustainability-based practices is a limited discourse and studies for slow fashion concept are scarce. This study thus aims to enlighten the subject of how slow fashion concept could improve local economies and how Spanish consumers respond to such initiatives. This paper is based on an exploratory qualitative research for which focus group interviews including three group discussions with Spanish consumers were held. The data was examined by constant comparison analysis to present consumer insights. Moreover, a case study was conducted with a Spanish apparel brand. Saint Brissant was chosen since it manufactures in Spain to (i) ensure its products? high quality and (ii) to empower Spanish economy. This paper provides empirical insights. Even though local manufacturing was perceived to have a higher quality, Spanish consumers? behavioural intentions of using local brands were not high.Self-interest, mainly price and design, was recorded as the most influential purchase criteria. Furthermore, Saint Brissant case demonstrated that local manufacturing could boost local economies by creating workforce. However, governmental subsidies should be rearranged and consumers? perceptions should be improved to support local manufacturers in Spain.

This paper presents a project for providing the students of Structural Engineering with the flexibility to learn outside classroom schedules. The goal is a framework for adaptive E-learning based on a repository of open educational courseware with a set of basic Structural Engineering concepts and fundamentals. These are paramount for students to expand their technical knowledge and skills in structural analysis and design of tall buildings, arch-type structures as well as bridges. Thus, concepts related to structural behaviour such as linearity, compatibility, stiffness and influence lines have traditionally been elusive for students. The objective is to facilitate the student a teachinglearning process to acquire the necessary intuitive knowledge, cognitive skills and the basis for further technological modules and professional development in this area. As a side effect, the system is expected to help the students improve their preparation for exams on the subject. In this project, a web-based open-source system for studying influence lines on continuous beams is presented. It encompasses a collection of interactive user-friendly applications accessible via Web, written in JavaScript under JQuery and Dygraph Libraries, taking advantage of their efficiency and graphic capabilities. It is performed in both Spanish and English languages. The student is enabled to set the geometric, topologic, boundary and mechanic layout of a continuous beam. While changing the loading and the support conditions, the changes in the beam response prompt on the screen, so that the effects of the several issues involved in structural analysis become apparent. This open interaction with the user allows the student to simulate and virtually infer the structural response. Different levels of complexity can be handled, whereas an ongoing help is at hand for any of them. Students can freely boost their experiential learning on this subject at their own pace, in order to further share, process, generalize and apply the relevant essential concepts of Structural Engineering analysis. Besides, this collection is being added to the "Virtual Lab of Continuum Mechanics" of the UPM, launched in 2013 (http://serviciosgate.upm.es/laboratoriosvirtuales/laboratorios/medios-continuos-en-construcci%C3%B3n)
