Resumo:
This paper presents the results of research on mixed mode fracture of sandwich panels of plasterboard and rock wool. The experimental data of the performed tests are supplied. The specimens were made from commercial panels. Asymmetrical three-point bending tests were performed on notched specimens. Three sizes of geometrically similar specimens were tested for studying the size effect. The paper also includes the numerical simulation of the experimental results by using an embedded cohesive crack model. The involved parameters for modelling are previously measured by standardised tests.

This paper is focused on the chloride-induced corrosion of the rebar in RC. A comprehensive model for the chloride ingress into concrete is presented, with special attention to non-linear diffusion coefficients, chloride binding isotherms and convection phenomena. Based on the results of chloride diffusion, subsequent active corrosion is assumed and the radial expansion of the corroded reinforcement reproduced. For cracking simulation, the Strong Discontinuity Approach is applied. Both models (initiation and propagation corrosion stages) are incorporated in the same finite element program and chained. Comparisons with experimental results are carried out, with reasonably good agreements being obtained, especially for cracking patterns. Major limitations refer to difficulties to establish precise levels of basic data such as the chloride ion content at concrete surface, the chloride threshold concentration that triggers active corrosion, the rate of oxide production or the rust mechanical properties.

The calibration coefficients of several models of cup and propeller anemometers were analysed. The analysis was based on a series of laboratory calibrations between January 2003 and August 2007. Mean and standard deviation values of calibration coefficients from the anemometers studied were included. Two calibration procedures were used and compared. In the first, recommended by the Measuring network of Wind Energy Institutes (MEASNET), 13 measurement points were taken over a wind speed range of 4 to 16 m s−1. In the second procedure, 9 measurement points were taken over a wider speed range of 4 to 23 m s−1. Results indicated no significant differences between the two calibration procedures applied to the same anemometer in terms of measured wind speed and wind turbines' Annual Energy Production (AEP). The influence of the cup anemometers' design on the calibration coefficients was also analysed. The results revealed that the slope of the calibration curve, if based on the rotation frequency and not the anemometer's output frequency, seemed to depend on the cup center rotation radius.

The performances of two rotor-damaged commercial anemometers (Vector Instruments A100 LK) were studied. The calibration results (i.e. the transfer function) were very linear, the aerodynamic behavior being more efficient than the one shown by both anemometers equipped with undamaged rotors. No detection of the anomaly (the rotors'damage) was possible based on the calibration results. However, the Fourier analysis clearly revealed this anomaly.

The analysis of the harmonic terms related to the rotational speed of a cup anemometer is a way to detect anomalies such as wear and tear, rotor non-symmetries (rotor damage) or problems at the output signal system. The research already done in this matter at the IDR/UPM Institute is now taken to cup anemometers working on the field. A 1-2 year testing campaign is being carried out in collaboration with Kintech Engineering. 2 Thies First Class Advanced installed at 58 m and 73 m height in a meteorology tower are constantly monitored. The results will be correlated to the anemometer performance evolution studied through several calibrations planned to be performed along the testing campaign.

ABSTRACT Gasification of sewage sludge is an attractive alternative for generating of fuel gases such as H2 and CO. These gases, in turn, can be used as raw materials for the production of organic chemicals and liquid fuel. However, gasification is not without problems as the linked ones to production of char and tar. The tar in the gas can be an inconvenience for to use it as fuel by the problems of blockage and corrosion in the equipments. Since the gasification conditions affect the production of tar, this research has focused on analysing the influence of parameters such as temperature, throughput, the particle size, the gasifying agent and the use of catalysts in the fluidized bed gasification of sewage sludge. In addition to measuring the effect of the above parameters on the production and composition of the tar, it has also been quantified their influence on the yield and composition of the gas and char production. The results show that higher throughput (kg/h.m2) leads to a reduction of fuel gas production and an increase in the production of char and tar, this owes to a lower of gas residence time or what is the same thing less time available for gas-solid and gas-gas reactions attached to the conversion of tar and char to fuel gases. There has also been proven that the rising in particle size, by the increasing heating time of it, has a similar effect in the products of gasification that the results by the rise in the throughput. The applications a high gasification temperature (850 ° C), the use of air-steam as gasifying agent and/or dolomite as primary catalysts are able to reduce the production of tar.

This paper describes the design and application of the Atmospheric Evaluation and Research Integrated model for Spain (AERIS). Currently, AERIS can provide concentration profiles of NO2, O3, SO2, NH3, PM, as a response to emission variations of relevant sectors in Spain. Results are calculated using transfer matrices based on an air quality modelling system (AQMS) composed by the WRF (meteorology), SMOKE (emissions) and CMAQ (atmospheric-chemical processes) models. The AERIS outputs were statistically tested against the conventional AQMS and observations, revealing a good agreement in both cases. At the moment, integrated assessment in AERIS focuses only on the link between emissions and concentrations. The quantification of deposition, impacts (health, ecosystems) and costs will be introduced in the future. In conclusion, the main asset of AERIS is its accuracy in predicting air quality outcomes for different scenarios through a simple yet robust modelling framework, avoiding complex programming and long computing times.

Atmospheric emissions from road transport have increased all around the world during the last decades more rapidly than from other pollution sources. For instance, they contribute to more than 25% of total CO, CO2, NOx, and fine particle emissions in most of the European countries. This situation shows the importance of road transport when complying with emission ceilings and air quality standards applied to these pollutants. This paper presents a modelling system to perform atmospheric emission projections (simultaneously both air quality pollutants and greenhouse gases) from road transport including the development of a tailored software tool (EmiTRANS) as a planning tool. The methodology has been developed with two purposes: 1) to obtain outputs used as inputs to the COPERT4 software to calculate emission projections and 2) to summarize outputs for policy making evaluating the effect of emission abatement measures for a vehicle fleet. This methodology has been applied to the calculation of emission projections in Spain up to 2020 under several scenarios, including a sensitivity analysis useful for a better interpretation and confidence building on the results. This case study demonstrates the EmiTRANS applicability to a country, and points out the need for combining both technical and non-technical measures (such as behavioural changes or demand management) to reduce emissions, indirectly improving air quality and contributing to mitigate climate change.

This paper examined the potentialities of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as instrument for policy-support. To this respect, the adoption of an initiative within the Madrid Air Quality Plan (AQP) 2011–2015 regarding the substitution of diesel taxis with hybrid, natural gas and LPG alternatives was studied. Four different scenarios were elaborated, a business-as-usual scenario (BAU), the scenario of the AQP, and two extreme-situation scenarios: all-diesel (ADI) and all-ecologic (AEC). Impacts were characterized according to the ILCD methodology, focusing especially on climate change (CC) and photochemical ozone formation (PO). SimaPro 7.3 was used as analysis and inventory-construction tool. The results indicate that the shift to ecologic alternatives reduced impacts, especially those related to CC and PO. For the complete life cycle, reductions of 13% (CC) and 25% (PO) were observed for AQP against BAU (CC:1365 GgCO2, PO:13336 MgNMVOC). Deeper reductions were observed for AEC (CC:34%, PO:59%), while ADI produced slight increases in impacts if against BAU. The analysis of the use-phase revealed that the central and highest speed zones of the city benefit from the adoption of AQP. This is especially evident in zone 7, with reductions of 16% in CC and 31% in PO respectively against BAU (CCzone1:3443 kgCO2/veh·km, POzone7:11.1 kgNMVOC/veh·km).

(ENG) The choice of locations for the implementation of industrial activities is a complex problem where the cost and efficiency criteria have been adding new ones relating to the environment impact and the company’s corporate image reflected in Corporate Social Responsability. The environmental criteria have been getting big importance in the final decision, to become key elements in the final decision, due to the duty of submit of environmental assessment projects. Therefore, promoters, quite often, ask previously to the Administration about the viability of their projects before starting a lengthy administrative procedure. This paper proposes the use of sustainability indicators and their application through a multi-criteria decision model for managing the establishment options initially considered, so that they become an help instrument of estimation in order to making these decisions. To show its usefulness we propose the use of the support tool for decision making based on the PROMETHEE methodology and its application in the management of 5 alternative sites for the installation of a cement factory in the Community of Madrid under sustainability criteria.

This paper focuses on the design of railway timetables considering a variable elastic demand profile along a whole design day. Timetabling is the third stage in the classical hierarchical railway planning process. Most of previous works on this topic consider a uniform demand behavior for short planning intervals. In this paper, we propose a MINLP model for designing non-periodic timetables on a railway corridor where demand is dependent on waiting times. In the elastic demand case, long waiting times lead to a loss of passengers, who may select an alternative transportation mode. The mode choice is modeled using two alternative methods. The first one is based on a sigmoid function and can be used in case of absence of information for competitor modes. In the second one, the mode choice probability is obtained using a Logit model that explicitly considers the existence of a main alternative mode. With the purpose of obtaining optimal departure times, in both cases, a minimization of the loss of passengers is used as objective function. Finally, as illustration, the timetabling MINLP model with both mode choice methods is applied to a real case and computational results are shown.

The achievement of the limit values established in the European legislation pose an important handicap for large urban areas with intense road traffic, such as Madrid (Spain). Despite permanent measures included in air quality plans it is important to assess additional measures that may be temporally applied under unfavourable conditions. This paper reports on the simulation of different traffic restriction strategies in Madrid for high-pollution episodes.

This study aims to assess the performance or multi-layer canopy parameterizations implemented in the mesoscale WRF model in order to understand their potential contribution to improve the description of energy fluxes and wind fields in the Madrid city. It was found that the Building Energy Model (BEP+BEM) parameterization yielded better results than the bulk standard scheme implemented in the Noah LSM, but very close to those of the Building Energy Parameterization (BEP). The later was deemed as the best option since data requirements and CPU time were smaller. Two annual runs were made to feed the CMAQ chemical-transport model to assess the impact of this feature in routinely air quality modelling activities.

The present paper describes the advancement and evaluation of air quality-related impacts with the Atmospheric Evaluation and Research Integrated system for Spain (AERIS). In its current version, AERIS is able to provide estimates on the impacts of air quality over human health (PM2.5 and O3), crops and vegetation (O3). The modules that allow quantifying the before mentioned impacts were modeled by applying different approaches (mostly for the European context) present in scientific literature to the conditions of the Iberian Peninsula. This application was supported by reliable data sources, as well as by the good predictive capacity of AERIS for ambient concentrations. For validation purposes, the estimates of AERIS for impacts on human health (change in the statistical life expectancy-PM2.5) and vegetation (loss of wheat crops-O3) were compared against results from the SERCA project and GAINS estimates for two emission scenarios. In general, good results evidenced by reasonable correlation coefficients were obtained, therefore confirming the adequateness of the followed modeling approaches and the quality of AERIS predictions.

The quality requirements in terms of rehabilitation and new Works, force to prevent cracking on partitions and one of the main causes is the excessive deformation of the floor. In most of the cases, there are any structural damages, only aesthetic effects, but it is necessary to take precautions to avoid cracking because it is one of the most common diseases and in addition is the main reason of user’s complaints. The increased consumption of plasterboard panels and mineral wool used to build partitions, justifies the need to develop a deeper understanding of the cracking behaviour and mechanism, because by now, any specifically work dedicated to the study of fractures behaviour of sandwich plasterboard panels and rock wool has been found. When approaching the study of the fracture behaviour of the material it must bear in mind that we are referring to a composite material and as such, its mechanical and strength properties depend heavily on its components. Therefore, to explain the fracture behaviour of sandwich panels its components must be studied as well. On the other hand, it is also considered very useful to have a calculation tool to simulate the more likely fractures of the sandwich panel in order to predict it. This model used to perform simulations will enable the design of partitions built with these materials without cracks because it will relate the deflections in decks with its potential cracking. To contrast and validate this type of model, it is necessary and imperative to have enough experimental data of the sandwich plasterboard and rock wool fractures in order to enable its numerical simulation with it. On the basis of the above, the question arises firstly an experimental campaign in order to obtain the necessary parameters to characterize the cracking behaviour of sandwich panels and its components: plasterboard and rock wool, studying also its cracking behaviour in a mixed mode fracture and the effect of size parameters of the panel. Furthermore, a calculation model to simulate fractures in mixed mode of the sandwich panels made of plasterboard and rock wool is proposed in order to check the validity of the numerical model, based on experimental results obtained from the test campaign. Finally, this model is applied to study cracking on partitions built with sandwich panels resulting from the unidirectional floor’s deformations built with prestressed concrete beams and slab pottery pieces being this typology the most common one on residential buildings works.
