Aircraft Operators Companies (AOCs) are always willing to keep the cost of a flight as low as possible. These costs could be modelled using a function of the fuel consumption, time of flight and fixed cost (over flight cost, maintenance, etc.). These are strongly dependant on the atmospheric conditions, the presence of winds and the aircraft performance. For this reason, much research effort is being put in the development of numerical and graphical techniques for defining the optimal trajectory. This paper presents a different approach to accommodate AOCs preferences, adding value to their activities, through the development of a tool, called aircraft trajectory simulator. This tool is able to simulate the actual flight of an aircraft with the constraints imposed. The simulator is based on a point mass model of the aircraft. The aim of this paper is to evaluate 3DoF aircraft model errors with BADA data through real data from Flight Data Recorder FDR. Therefore, to validate the proposed simulation tool a comparative analysis of the state variables vector is made between an actual flight and the same flight using the simulator. Finally, an example of a cruise phase is presented, where a conventional levelled flight is compared with a continuous climb flight. The comparison results show the potential benefits of following user-preferred routes for commercial flights.

Characteristics of the impacts su!ered by the fruit on a transfer point of an experimental fruit packing line were analysed. The transfer is made up by two transporting belts at di!erent heights forming an angle of 903. These transfer points are very common in fruit packing lines, in which fruits receive two impacts: the "rst onto the belt base and the second into the lateral plate. Diferent tests were carried out to study the e!ect of transfer height, velocity, belt structure and padding on the acceleration values recorded by an instrumental sphere (IS 100). Results showed that transfer height and belt structure a!ect mainly impact values on the belt base, and padding a!ects mainly impact values registered for lateral contact. The elect of belt velocity in both impacts is less important when compared to the rest of the variables. Additionally, two powered transfer decelerators were tested at the same point with the aim of decreasing impacts su!ered by the fruit. Comparing impacts registered using these decelerators to those analysed in the first part of the study without decelerators, a high reduction of the impact values was observed.

An automated panoramic irradiator with a 3 Ci 241Am-Be neutron source is installed in a bunker-type large room at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). It was recently modified and a neutron spectrometry campaign was organized to characterize the neutron fields in different measurement points along the irradiation bench. Four research groups working with different Bonner Sphere Spectrometers (BSS) and using different spectral unfolding codes took part to this exercise. INFN-LNF used a BSS formed by 9 spheres plus bare detector, with cylindrical, almost point like, 6LiI(Eu) scintillator (4 mm x 4 mm, from Ludlum); UAZ-UPM employed a similar system but with only 6 spheres plus bare detector; UAB worked with a 3He filled proportional counter at 8kPa filling pressure, cylindrical 9 mm x 10 mm (05NH1 from Eurisys) with 11 spheres configuration; and CIEMAT used 12 spheres with an spherical 3He SP9 counter (Centronic Ltd., UK) with very high sensitivity due to the large diameter (3.2 cm) and the filling pressure of the order of 228 kPa. Each group applied a different spectral unfolding method: INFN and UAB worked with FRUIT ver. 3.0 with their own response matrixes; UAZ-UPM used the BUNKIUT unfolding code with the response matrix UTA4 and CIEMAT employed the GRAVEL-MAXED-IQU package with their own response matrix. The paper shows the main results obtained in terms of neutron spectra at fixed distances from the source as well as total neutron fluence rate and ambient dose equivalent rate H*(10) determined from the spectra. The latter are compared with the readings of a common active survey-meter (LB 6411). The small differences in the results of the various groups are discussed.

El presente ensayo pretende aportar una reflexión sobre el amplio territorio de la imagen en la arquitectura hoy. Para ello un buen ejemplo es el proyecto del Rascacielos de la Friedrichstrasse, realizado por Mies van der Rohe en el periodo de entre guerras de 1921/22. Muchas son las razones que han hecho de esta obra la elegida, pero una más actual sobresale del resto: que de los cientos de ensayos vertidos sobre esta obra solo se haya comentado -salvo alguna excepción- las características objetuales de lo directamente descrito por las vistas -como si fuera un fiel reflejo de la realidad- sin entrar a analizar la verdadera naturaleza física y simbólica de lo representado como expresión subjetiva –espacial- de una arquitectura. Si su importancia como punto de inflexión en el desarrollo inicial de una obra plenamente moderna es un motivo más que suficiente para dedicarle un estudio pormenorizado, ya que puede resultar crucial para comprender los inicios del autor en el Movimiento Moderno. Su presencia como un reducido conjunto de cuatro vistas perspectivas, mezcla de una fotografía del lugar y de un dibujo realizado sobre la misma, acarrea en nuestra opinión significaciones igual de importantes para la comprensión de esta arquitectura que todas aquellas ideas descritas sobre las mismas. Creadas en una época seminal, cuando el lenguaje de la fotografía y el cine están en pleno desarrollo, se puede afirmar que el conjunto de representaciones del Rascacielos de la Friedrichstrasse forman parte como referente histórico de una de las primeras arquitecturas virtuales que pertenecen de pleno derecho al Movimiento Moderno. Paradigma de las más absoluta actualidad, por encontrarse en esa frontera de lo nunca realizado, pero sí asumible espacialmente como realidad fotográfica, las imágenes del rascacielos se pueden considerar así como una de las primeras reflexiones sobre la naturaleza virtual del proyecto arquitectónico postindustrial. No siendo novedoso que la descripción fotográfica de una obra absorba y comunique por sí misma las múltiples propiedades que esta posee, como tampoco lo es que la mayoría de arquitecturas se den por conocidas actualmente a través de los medios. Sorprende que hasta hoy no se hayan analizado con la misma intensidad las múltiples razones que dieron lugar a unas imágenes cuya poética da forma por igual a la arquitectura que representan. Si la intención es reflexionar así sobre este hecho contemporáneo mediante un ejemplo paradigmático, certificado por la historia, nos veremos obligados a emplear una metodología acorde a la condición dual que toda imagen mediatizada produce en su lectura como mezcla fluctuante entre lo que se interpreta de manera autónoma a través de lo representado y de los significados que la imagen adquiere a lo largo de su recorrido como referente histórico. Esta ambivalencia interpretativa llevará a organizar este ensayo mediante dos bloques claramente diferenciados que, complementarios entre sí, siguen el orden de lectura que toda imagen de una arquitectura ofrece a través de los medios. Así, una primera parte, titulada La imagen de una arquitectura, analiza la interpretación que la historia y el autor han dado al rascacielos por medio de su uso en las diferentes exposiciones, revistas, tratados de estilos y monografías de las que ha formado parte. Este recorrido, que es el verdadero espacio donde estas arquitecturas residen, limitado -por una cuestión de poner orden- al estudio a los países que acogieron en vida al autor, servirá para establecer una primera narrativa que expone las diferentes posiciones que la crítica ha producido a lo largo del tiempo. La presencia del primer rascacielos junto al segundo, en la publicación que el arquitecto realiza de manera temprana en Frühlicht, obligará a incorporar esta segunda solución como una parte más del estudio. Cargada de las citas obligadas, de las diferentes personalidades que se han enfrentado a dichos proyectos, este primer análisis historiográfico establece un primer estado de la cuestión donde se revela una lectura ambivalente de los rascacielos. Si la interpretación directa de sus imágenes ha permitido profundizar en las características del vidrio y sus reflejos y en la desnudez de una estructura metálica como claros ejemplos de una expresión moderna y tecnológica de vidrio y el acero. Las particulares formas triangulares del primero y las formas sinuosas del segundo han dado lugar a una multitud de calificaciones, de ser ejemplo tanto de un Expresionismo como de un dadaísmo o constructivismo, que con el tiempo han ido creciendo hacia una admiración artística con una fuerte carga poética. Este lectura histórica, que remata con un breve periodo más actual donde se inicia el cuestionamiento de su carácter utópico y se recupera puntualmente su naturaleza como proyecto, servirá para plantear finalmente una serie de dudas que, sin respuesta aparente, exigen revisar la lectura de sus imágenes como parte de lo que realmente son: expresión de una nueva arquitectura que a partir de ese preciso momento entra de pleno derecho en el Movimiento Moderno. Por otro lado, la existencia en el discurso posterior del arquitecto de un proceso de formalizacion altamente valorado por su autor y la presencia de igual a igual de un lugar en las representaciones y planos de los rascacielos, que la historia parece haber obviado, servirán como razón más que suficiente para la revisión de unas relaciones iniciales con la vanguardia -todavía hoy poco definidas- así como para proponer la lectura renovada de dichas propuestas en altura por lo que también son: proyectos que responden a unas necesidades espaciales de un lugar y tiempo muy determinados. Esta segunda parte, denominada La arquitectura de una imagen, se plantea así más como una inmersión total en el mundo del proyecto que una simple descripción nominal del mismo. Conscientemente simétrica y opuesta a un primer bloque histórico, esta segunda parte -mucho más extensa y parte central de esta tesis- se concentra en el análisis de las imágenes como: aquel conjunto de eventos históricos que aplicados sobre la ciudad, el lugar, el rascacielos, y los procesos técnicos de la imagen dieron lugar a estas arquitecturas como razón de ser. Consecuentemente se tratará pues de bucear en las razones que, ocultas como proceso de formalización, llevaron a Mies a dar un paso más allá hacia a una nueva manera de hacer, ver y pensar su arquitectura, de expresar un espacio. La aproximación a estas imágenes radicará por tanto en resaltar al mismo tiempo la naturaleza de unas representaciones cuyas características fotográficas son el fiel reflejo de una época donde los nuevos medios visuales –cine y fotografía- empiezan a ser cuestionados por su excesiva utilización. La complejidad de unos hechos coincidentes en el tiempo obligará a dividir este estudio en un primer acercamiento general, a la respuesta dada por una mayoría de participantes al concurso, para así cotejar la importancia de una actitud proyectual y contextual común de Mies y sus compañeros. Mezcla de requerimientos y necesidades de la propia historia de la parcela, de las peculiaridades de un lugar y las exigencias programáticas del concurso; el siguiente paso consistirá en reconstruir el proceso de formalización del conjunto de dibujos que caracterizan ambos proyectos para así comprender los mecanismo que, suspendidos como traslaciones entre las diferentes representaciones, operan en la realización física de dichas imágenes y complementan como pensamiento la idea arquitectónica de los mismos. Con lo que se pretende ofrecer dos cosas: una interpretación que tenga en cuenta la novedosa naturaleza de la manera de pensar lo fotográfico en el arquitecto, así como la particular idiosincrasia del momento en que estas concurren. Dicho de otro modo, se realizará una aproximación de las vistas del primer rascacielos que tenga en cuenta la historia tecnológica y visual que rodea al evento y las características de una ejecución física todavía hoy sin aclarar del todo. El descubrimiento de una serie de incoherencias geométricas en las plantas, alzado y vistas del primer proyecto llevará a argumentar la presencia de un trampantojo que, nunca antes revelado, se entiende lleno de unas intenciones espaciales plenamente vanguardistas. Interpretación arquitectónica de las imágenes donde la presencia de una serie de elementos directamente ligados al lenguaje fotográfico y cinematográfico se traduce en una nueva lectura espacial plenamente dinámica llena de dislocación, ritmo y simultaneidad alejada de la idea de ver la forma como un elemento permanentemente fijo. Sugerencia que nos lleva directamente a la lectura del segundo proyecto de rascacielos como una clara continuación de lo imaginado en el primero. Para finalizar, tras una revisión biográfica -previa al proyecto- que desvela unas preocupaciones urbanas y un deseo de cambio anterior al concurso de la Friedrichstrasse, se comparan estas nuevas significaciones espaciales con una práctica de vanguardia que, coetánea a la convocatoria de 1921, demuestran unas investigaciones muy similares con unos mismos intereses cinematográficos. La lectura de las propuestas de tres artistas próximos en ese momento al arquitecto -como son Hans Richter, Moholy-Nagy y El Lissitzky- permiten demostrar unas preocupaciones muy similares a lo conseguido por Mies con los rascacielos que parecen haber servido de ejemplo y motivación mutua para el surgimiento de una nueva espacialidad -más fluida-. Esta lectura permitirá recuperar la importancia de estos dos proyectos como la expresión directa de una nueva manera de pensar y hacer su arquitectura que ya no tendrá vuelta atrás en la obra de Mies. A la vez que recuperar la potencialidad poética de unas vistas que, así definidas reiteradamente por la crítica, se revelan ahora como directas transmisoras de ese deseo de cambio arquitectónico evidenciado en los proyectos posteriores. Racionalización de una poética que al ir más allá de la forma directamente transcrita permite establecer una última reflexión general sobre como opera la imagen en la arquitectura, así como la pertinencia crítica de este proyecto para con el mundo virtual de hoy. En definitiva, más allá del poder evocador de estas representaciones, este será un estudio que pretende cuestionar las características que la imagen de la arquitectura puede proponer más allá de su literalidad por medio de la fascinante interacción que se produce entre la imagen y lo espacialmente imaginado. Encuentros, recursos e intereses de una respuesta plenamente arquitectónica que, además de dar luz a un cambio tan inclasificable como moderno, abre el camino a la interpretación de un proceso de formalizacion que, reiteradamente defendido por su autor justifican una intensidad poética dada por la historia y reafirman una preocupación artística a menudo desmentida por su autor. Dicho de otro modo, si profundizar en las razones arquitectónicas, históricas y técnicas que llevan a Mies a realizar sus rascacielos, por medio de su relación con la vanguardia y el cine, arrojan luz y explican el cambio que se está gestando en el arquitecto cara una nueva espacialidad fluida. Reflexionar sobre su naturaleza espacial -de estas imágenes ya icónicas- equivale a aportar una reflexión crítica sobre la naturaleza simbólica de la imagen de la arquitectura hoy. “Aunque el puesto clave que ocupa el Rascacielos de la Friedrichstrasse dentro de la historia de la arquitectura moderna nunca ha sido seriamente cuestionado, la opinion critica al respecto siempre ha estado dividida. Desde la publicacion de la monografia de Philip Johnson sobre Mies en 1947, el muro cortina como una piel transparente que reviste el esqueleto estructural has ido aclamado como un gran avance pionero. Otros puntos de vista sobre el edificio, subrayando su supuesta planta expresionista, lo han visto como un esfuerzo un poco menos aventurado. Asi calibrada, la propuesta de Mies para la Friedrichstrasse es radicalmente moderna en mas de un sentido enfatizado por Johnson.” 1 W.Tegethoff ABSTRACT This essay reflects on the broad territory of the image in today’s architecture. One good example is the Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper design by Mies van der Rohe in 1921/22, during the period between World Wars I and II. There are many reasons why this work has been chosen, but one of the most recent stands out above the rest: of the hundreds of essays written on this work, comments have been made only (with the odd exception) on the objectual characteristics of what has been directly described by the views (as if it were a genuine reflection of reality), without analysing the real physical and symbolic nature of the representation a subjective (spatial) expression of architecture. If its importance as a point of inflection in the initial development of a completely modern work is more than enough reason to make a detailed study, since it may be crucial for understanding the author’s beginnings in the Modern Movement. Its presence as a reduced set of four views, the combination of a photograph of the place and a drawing made of it, in our opinion, carry meanings that are as important for understanding this architecture as all the ideas described about them. Created during an early period, when the languages of photography and cinema were in full swing, it can be said that the perspectives of the Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper form a historical reference of one of the first virtual architectures that belong entirely to the Modern Movement. A paradigm of the most absolute modernity owing to the fact that it is on that frontier of the never-accomplished, but spatially assumable as photographic reality, the images of the skyscraper can be considered as one of the first reflections on the virtual nature of post-industrial architectural design. There is nothing new in the fact that the photographic description of work absorbs and communicates on its own the multiple properties it involves and there is nothing new in the fact that most architectures become known today through the media. It is surprising that no analysis has been made to date, with the same intensity, of the many reasons that led to a number of images whose poetry add form to the architecture they represent. If the intention is to reflect on this contemporary fact using a paradigmatic example certified by history, we will be forced to use a methodology that corresponds to the dual condition produced by the interpretation of all media images as a fluctuating combination of what is interpreted independently through the representation and meanings the image acquires as a historical reference. This ambivalent interpretation will lead this essay to be structured in two clearly different and complementary blocks that follow the reading order offered by any image of architecture in the media. Thus, a first part, titled The image of an architecture, analyses the interpretation history and the author have given to the skyscraper through its use in the various exhibitions, magazines, style agreements and monographs in which it has been included. This examination, which is the real space in which these architectures reside, is (to delimit and organise the study) restricted to countries in which the author lived during his lifetime and it will help establish a first narrative that considers the different interpretations made by critics over time. The presence of the first skyscraper next to the second one in the publication the architect makes early on in Frühlicht will require the second solution to be incorporated as another part of the study. Laden with necessary quotes by the various personalities who have examined said designs, this first historiographical analysis establishes an initial state of the question that reveals an ambivalent interpretation of skyscrapers. If the direct interpretation of the images has made it possible to closely examine the characteristics of the glass and its reflections and the nudity of a metal structure as clear examples of a modern and technological expression of glass and steel. The particular triangular shapes of the former and the sinuous shapes of the latter have generated many classifications that suggest it is an example of Expressionism, Dadaism or Constructivism, which have grown over time into artistic admiration laden with poetry. This historical reading, which concludes with a more recent short period that begins to question the utopian character and recovers its nature as a project, will finally consider a number of doubts that have no apparent answer and require a revision of the reading of the images as part of what they actually are: expression of a new architecture that becomes part of the Modern Movement as from that precise moment. In addition, the existence in the architect’s subsequent discourse of a formalisation process highly valued by the author and the equal presence of a place in the representations and plans of a skyscraper history seems to have forgotten, will stand as more than sufficient reason for a revision of initial relations with the avantgarde -not particularly well defined today- together with a renewed reading of said vertical proposals for what they also are: projects that respond to the special needs of a very specific place and time. This second part, titled The architecture of an image, is presented more as a total immersion in the project world than a mere nominal description of it. Deliberately symmetrical and opposite to a historic first bloc, this second part (much longer and central part of the thesis) it will focus on analysing images as: the set of historical events that affected the skyscraper, city, place and technical processes image to provide these architectures with their raison d’être. Consequently, the aim is to delve in the reasons which, hidden as a formalisation process, led Mies to move on to a new form of doing, seeing and thinking his architecture, of expressing a space. The approach to these images will therefore lie in highlighting the nature of a number of representations whose photographic features are the true reflection of a period in which the new visual media (cinema and photography) begin to be questioned due to excessive use. The complexity of facts that coincide in time will require this study to be divided into a first general approach, with a response given by most of the participants in the competition, to compare the importance of a common approach in terms of project and context of the response given by Mies and his colleagues. A combination of requirements and needs of the very history of the plot of land, the peculiarities of a place and the programmatic requirements of the competition; the next step will reconstruct the formalisation process of the set of drawings that characterise both to understand the mechanism which, suspended like translations between the different representations, operates in the realisation of said images and complements as thought their architectural idea. The aim is thus to offer two things: an interpretation that takes into account the new way in which the architect works with photography, together with the particular idiosyncrasy of the moment at which they occur. In other words, the approach will focus on the views of the first skyscraper, which takes into account the technological and visual history that surrounds the event and the characteristics of a physical execution that still remains unexplained in full. The subsequent discovery of a number of geometrical incoherences in the floor plans, elevations and views of the first project will lead to an argument for the presence of trompe l’oeil which, never before revealed, is seen as laden with completely avant-garde spatial intentions. Architectural interpretation of the images where the presence of a number of elements directly linked to the languages of photography and cinema is translated into a new spatial reading that is completely dynamic and full of dislocation, rhythm and simultaneity far-removed from the idea of seeing shape as a permanently fixed element. This suggestion takes us to directly to the second skyscraper design as a clear continuation of what he imagined in the first. To end, after a preliminary biographical revision (previous to the project) that reveals urban concerns and a desire for change before the Friedrichstrasse competition, a comparison is made of these new spatial meanings with avant-garde practice which, contemporary with the 1921 competition, show very similar investigations with the same cinematographic interest. The reading of the proposals of three artists close to the architect at that time -i.e. Hans Richter, Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky- reveals concerns that are very similar to what Mies achieved with the skyscrapers that seem to have been used as an example and mutual motivation for the creation of a new (more fluent) spatiality. This interpretation will make it possible to recover the importance of these two projects as the direct expression of a new way of thinking and doing his architecture that was to remain fixed in Mies’ work. This also gives rise to the possibility of recovering the poetic potential of views which, as defined repeatedly by the critics, now stand as the direct transmitters of the desire for architectural change shown in later projects. A rationalisation of poetry which, by going beyond the directly transcribed form, gives rise to the establishment of one general final reflection on how the image works in architecture, together with the critical relevance of this design for today’s virtual world. In short, beyond the evocative power of images this will be a study which questions the characteristics the image of architecture can propose beyond its literality through the fascinating interaction between the image and spatially imagined. Encounters, resources and interests of a completely architectural response that, besides sheds light to a change that is as non-classifiable as it is modern, shows the way to the interpretation of a formalisation process which, repeatedly defined by the author, justifies a poetic intensity and confirms an artistic concern often denied by the author. In other words, examining the architectural, historical and technical reasons that led Mies to create his skyscrapers, thanks to its relationship with the avant-garde and cinema, sheds light on and explains the change taking place in the architect with regard to a new fluent spatiality. Reflecting on the spatial nature -of these iconic images- is tantamount to a critical reflection on the symbolic nature of architecture today. “Although the key position of the Friedrichstrasse Office Building within the early history of modern architecture has never been seriously challenged, critical opinion on it has always been divided. Ever since the publication of Philip Johnson’s monograph on Mies in 1947, the curtain wall as a transparent skin sheathing the skeleton structure has frequently been hailed as a pioneering breakthrough. Other views of the building, stressing its supposedly Expressionist plan, have seen it as a somewhat less adventurous effort. In fact, the project has never been regarded in abroad context. Thus measured, Mies’s proposal fro Friedrichstrasse is radically modern in more than the one respect emphasized by Johnson.” 1 W.Tegethoff

In this paper, we address the problem of dynamic pricing to optimize the revenue coming from the sales of a limited inventory in a finite time-horizon. A priori, the demand is assumed to be unknown. The seller must learn on the fly. We first deal with the simplest case, involving only one class of product for sale. Furthermore the general situation is considered with a finite number of product classes for sale. In particular, a case in point is the sale of tickets for events related to culture and leisure; in this case, typically the tickets are sold months before the event, thus, uncertainty over actual demand levels is a very a common occurrence. We propose a heuristic strategy of adaptive dynamic pricing, based on experience gained from the past, taking into account, for each time period, the available inventory, the time remaining to reach the horizon, and the profit made in previous periods. In the computational simulations performed, the demand is updated dynamically based on the prices being offered, as well as on the remaining time and inventory. The simulations show a significant profit over the fixed-price strategy, confirming the practical usefulness of the proposed strategy. We develop a tool allowing us to test different dynamic pricing strategies designed to fit market conditions and seller s objectives, which will facilitate data analysis and decision-making in the face of the problem of dynamic pricing.

The supercritical Rankine power cycle offers a net improvement in plant efficiency compared with a subcritical Rankine cycle. For fossil power plants the minimum supercritical steam turbine size is about 450MW. A recent study between Sandia National Laboratories and Siemens Energy, Inc., published on March 2013, confirmed the feasibility of adapting the Siemens turbine SST-900 for supercritical steam in concentrated solar power plants, with a live steam conditions 230-260 bar and output range between 140-200 MWe. In this context, this analysis is focused on integrating a line-focus solar field with a supercritical Rankine power cycle. For this purpose two heat transfer fluids were assessed: direct steam generation and molten salt Hitec XL. To isolate solar field from high pressure supercritical water power cycle, an intermediate heat exchanger was installed between linear solar collectors and balance of plant. Due to receiver selective coating temperature limitations, turbine inlet temperature was fixed 550ºC. The design-point conditions were 550ºC and 260 bar at turbine inlet, and 165 MWe Gross power output. Plant performance was assessed at design-point in the supercritical power plant (between 43-45% net plant efficiency depending on balance of plantconfiguration), and in the subcritical plant configuration (~40% net plant efficiency). Regarding the balance of plant configuration, direct reheating was adopted as the optimum solution to avoid any intermediate heat exchanger. One direct reheating stage between high pressure turbine and intermediate pressure turbine is the common practice; however, General Electric ultrasupercritical(350 bar) fossil power plants also considered doubled-reheat applications. In this study were analyzed heat balances with single-reheat, double-reheat and even three reheating stages. In all cases were adopted the proper reheating solar field configurations to limit solar collectors pressure drops. As main conclusion, it was confirmed net plant efficiency improvements in supercritical Rankine line-focus (parabolic or linear Fresnel) solar plant configurations are mainly due to the following two reasons: higher number of feed-water preheaters (up to seven)delivering hotter water at solar field inlet, and two or even three direct reheating stages (550ºC reheating temperature) in high or intermediate pressure turbines. However, the turbine manufacturer should confirm the equipment constrains regarding reheating stages and number of steam extractions to feed-water heaters.

Over the past few years, the common practice within air traffic management has been that commercial aircraft fly by following a set of predefined routes to reach their destination. Currently, aircraft operators are requesting more flexibility to fly according to their prefer- ences, in order to achieve their business objectives. Due to this reason, much research effort is being invested in developing different techniques which evaluate aircraft optimal trajectory and traffic synchronisation. Also, the inefficient use of the airspace using barometric altitude overall in the landing and takeoff phases or in Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) trajectories where currently it is necessary introduce the necessary reference setting (QNH or QFE). To solve this problem and to permit a better airspace management born the interest of this research. Where the main goals will be to evaluate the impact, weakness and strength of the use of geometrical altitude instead of the use of barometric altitude. Moreover, this dissertation propose the design a simplified trajectory simulator which is able to predict aircraft trajectories. The model is based on a three degrees of freedom aircraft point mass model that can adapt aircraft performance data from Base of Aircraft Data, and meteorological information. A feature of this trajectory simulator is to support the improvement of the strategic and pre-tactical trajectory planning in the future Air Traffic Management. To this end, the error of the tool (aircraft Trajectory Simulator) is measured by comparing its performance variables with actual flown trajectories obtained from Flight Data Recorder information. The trajectory simulator is validated by analysing the performance of different type of aircraft and considering different routes. A fuel consumption estimation error was identified and a correction is proposed for each type of aircraft model. In the future Air Traffic Management (ATM) system, the trajectory becomes the fundamental element of a new set of operating procedures collectively referred to as Trajectory-Based Operations (TBO). Thus, governmental institutions, academia, and industry have shown a renewed interest for the application of trajectory optimisation techniques in com- mercial aviation. The trajectory optimisation problem can be solved using optimal control methods. In this research we present and discuss the existing methods for solving optimal control problems focusing on direct collocation, which has received recent attention by the scientific community. In particular, two families of collocation methods are analysed, i.e., Hermite-Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto collocation and the pseudospectral collocation. They are first compared based on a benchmark case study: the minimum fuel trajectory problem with fixed arrival time. For the sake of scalability to more realistic problems, the different meth- ods are also tested based on a real Airbus 319 El Cairo-Madrid flight. Results show that pseudospectral collocation, which has shown to be numerically more accurate and computa- tionally much faster, is suitable for the type of problems arising in trajectory optimisation with application to ATM. Fast and accurate optimal trajectory can contribute properly to achieve the new challenges of the future ATM. As atmosphere uncertainties are one of the most important issues in the trajectory plan- ning, the final objective of this dissertation is to have a magnitude order of how different is the fuel consumption under different atmosphere condition. Is important to note that in the strategic phase planning the optimal trajectories are determined by meteorological predictions which differ from the moment of the flight. The optimal trajectories have shown savings of at least 500 [kg] in the majority of the atmosphere condition (different pressure, and temperature at Mean Sea Level, and different lapse rate temperature) with respect to the conventional procedure simulated at the same atmosphere condition.This results show that the implementation of optimal profiles are beneficial under the current Air traffic Management (ATM).

The biggest problem when analyzing the brain is that its synaptic connections are extremely complex. Generally, the billions of neurons making up the brain exchange information through two types of highly specialized structures: chemical synapses (the vast majority) and so-called gap junctions (a substrate of one class of electrical synapse). Here we are interested in exploring the three-dimensional spatial distribution of chemical synapses in the cerebral cortex. Recent research has showed that the three-dimensional spatial distribution of synapses in layer III of the neocortex can be modeled by a random sequential adsorption (RSA) point process, i.e., synapses are distributed in space almost randomly, with the only constraint that they cannot overlap. In this study we hypothesize that RSA processes can also explain the distribution of synapses in all cortical layers. We also investigate whether there are differences in both the synaptic density and spatial distribution of synapses between layers. Using combined focused ion beam milling and scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM), we obtained three-dimensional samples from the six layers of the rat somatosensory cortex and identified and reconstructed the synaptic junctions. A total volume of tissue of approximately 4500μm3 and around 4000 synapses from three different animals were analyzed. Different samples, layers and/or animals were aggregated and compared using RSA replicated spatial point processes. The results showed no significant differences in the synaptic distribution across the different rats used in the study. We found that RSA processes described the spatial distribution of synapses in all samples of each layer. We also found that the synaptic distribution in layers II to VI conforms to a common underlying RSA process with different densities per layer. Interestingly, the results showed that synapses in layer I had a slightly different spatial distribution from the other layers.

Para el proyecto y cálculo de estructuras metálicas, fundamentalmente pórticos y celosías de cubierta, la herramienta más comúnmente utilizada son los programas informáticos de nudos y barras. En estos programas se define la geometría y sección de las barras, cuyas características mecánicas son perfectamente conocidas, y sobre las cuales obtenemos unos resultados de cálculo concretos en cuanto a estados tensionales y de deformación. Sin embargo el otro componente del modelo, los nudos, presenta mucha mayor complejidad a la hora de establecer sus propiedades mecánicas, fundamentalmente su rigidez al giro, así como de obtener unos resultados de estados tensionales y de deformación en los mismos. Esta “ignorancia” sobre el comportamiento real de los nudos, se salva generalmente asimilando a los nudos del modelo la condición de rígidos o articulados. Si bien los programas de cálculo ofrecen la posibilidad de introducir nudos con una rigidez intermedia (nudos semirrígidos), la rigidez de cada nudo dependerá de la geometría real de la unión, lo cual, dada la gran variedad de geometrías de uniones que en cualquier proyecto se nos presentan, hace prácticamente inviable introducir los coeficientes correspondientes a cada nudo en los modelos de nudos y barras. Tanto el Eurocódigo como el CTE, establecen que cada unión tendrá asociada una curva momento-rotación característica, que deberá ser determinada por los proyectistas mediante herramientas de cálculo o procedimientos experimentales. No obstante, este es un planteamiento difícil de llevar a cabo para cada proyecto. La consecuencia de esto es, que en la práctica, se realizan extensas comprobaciones y justificaciones de cálculo para las barras de las estructuras, dejando en manos de la práctica común la solución y puesta en obra de las uniones, quedando sin justificar ni comprobar la seguridad y el comportamiento real de estas. Otro aspecto que conlleva la falta de caracterización de las uniones, es que desconocemos como afecta el comportamiento real de éstas en los estados tensionales y de deformación de las barras que acometen a ellas, dudas que con frecuencia nos asaltan, no sólo en la fase de proyecto, sino también a la hora de resolver los problemas de ejecución que inevitablemente se nos presentan en el desarrollo de las obras. El cálculo mediante el método de los elementos finitos, es una herramienta que nos permite introducir la geometría real de perfiles y uniones, y nos permite por tanto abordar el comportamiento real de las uniones, y que está condicionado por su geometría. Por ejemplo, un caso típico es el de la unión de una viga a una placa o a un soporte soldando sólo el alma. Es habitual asimilar esta unión a una articulación. Sin embargo, el modelo por elementos finitos nos ofrece su comportamiento real, que es intermedio entre articulado y empotrado, ya que se transmite un momento y el giro es menor que el del apoyo simple. No obstante, la aplicación del modelo de elementos finitos, introduciendo la geometría de todos los elementos estructurales de un entramado metálico, tampoco resulta en general viable desde un punto de vista práctico, dado que requiere invertir mucho tiempo en comparación con el aumento de precisión que obtenemos respecto a los programas de nudos y barras, mucho más rápidos en la fase de modelización de la estructura. En esta tesis se ha abordado, mediante la modelización por elementos finitos, la resolución de una serie de casos tipo representativos de las uniones más comúnmente ejecutadas en obras de edificación, como son las uniones viga-pilar, estableciendo el comportamiento de estas uniones en función de las variables que comúnmente se presentan, y que son: •Ejecución de uniones viga-pilar soldando solo por el alma (unión por el alma), o bien soldando la viga al pilar por todo su perímetro (unión total). •Disposición o no de rigidizadores en los pilares •Uso de pilares de sección 2UPN en cajón o de tipo HEB, que son los tipos de soporte utilizados en casi el 100% de los casos en edificación. Para establecer la influencia de estas variables en el comportamiento de las uniones, y su repercusión en las vigas, se ha realizado un análisis comparativo entre las variables de resultado de los casos estudiados:•Estados tensionales en vigas y uniones. •Momentos en extremo de vigas •Giros totales y relativos en nudos. •Flechas. Otro de los aspectos que nos permite analizar la casuística planteada, es la valoración, desde un punto de vista de costos de ejecución, de la realización de uniones por todo el perímetro frente a las uniones por el alma, o de la disposición o no de rigidizadores en las uniones por todo el perímetro. Los resultados a este respecto, son estrictamente desde un punto de vista económico, sin perjuicio de que la seguridad o las preferencias de los proyectistas aconsejen una solución determinada. Finalmente, un tercer aspecto que nos ha permitido abordar el estudio planteado, es la comparación de resultados que se obtienen por el método de los elementos finitos, más próximos a la realidad, ya que se tiene en cuenta los giros relativos en las uniones, frente a los resultados obtenidos con programas de nudos y barras. De esta forma, podemos seguir usando el modelo de nudos y barras, más versátil y rápido, pero conociendo cuáles son sus limitaciones, y en qué aspectos y en qué medida, debemos ponderar sus resultados. En el último apartado de la tesis se apuntan una serie de temas sobre los que sería interesante profundizar en posteriores estudios, mediante modelos de elementos finitos, con el objeto de conocer mejor el comportamiento de las uniones estructurales metálicas, en aspectos que no se pueden abordar con los programas de nudos y barras. For the project and calculation of steel structures, mainly building frames and cover lattices, the tool more commonly used are the node and bars model computer programs. In these programs we define the geometry and section of the bars, whose mechanical characteristics are perfectly known, and from which we obtain the all calculation results of stresses and displacements. Nevertheless, the other component of the model, the nodes, are much more difficulty for establishing their mechanical properties, mainly the rotation fixity coefficients, as well as the stresses and displacements. This "ignorance" about the real performance of the nodes, is commonly saved by assimilating to them the condition of fixed or articulated. Though the calculation programs offer the possibility to introducing nodes with an intermediate fixity (half-fixed nodes), the fixity of every node will depend on the real connection’s geometry, which, given the great variety of connections geometries that in a project exist, makes practically unviable to introduce the coefficients corresponding to every node in the models of nodes and bars. Both Eurocode and the CTE, establish that every connection will have a typical moment-rotation associated curve, which will have to be determined for the designers by calculation tools or experimental procedures. Nevertheless, this one is an exposition difficult to carry out for each project. The consequence of this, is that in the practice, in projects are extensive checking and calculation reports about the bars of the structures, trusting in hands of the common practice the solution and execution of the connections, resulting without justification and verification their safety and their real behaviour. Another aspect that carries the lack of the connections characterization, is that we don´t know how affects the connections real behaviour in the stresses and displacements of the bars that attack them, doubts that often assault us, not only in the project phase, but also at the moment of solving the execution problems that inevitably happen in the development of the construction works. The calculation by finite element model is a tool that allows us to introduce the real profiles and connections geometry, and allows us to know about the real behaviour of the connections, which is determined by their geometry. Typical example is a beam-plate or beam-support connection welding only by the web. It is usual to assimilate this connection to an articulation or simple support. Nevertheless, the finite element model determines its real performance, which is between articulated and fixed, since a moment is transmitted and the relative rotation is less than the articulation’s rotation. Nevertheless, the application of the finite element model, introducing the geometry of all the structural elements of a metallic structure, does not also turn out to be viable from a practical point of view, provided that it needs to invest a lot of time in comparison with the precision increase that we obtain opposite the node and bars programs, which are much more faster in the structure modelling phase. In this thesis it has been approached, by finite element modelling, the resolution of a representative type cases of the connections commonly used in works of building, since are the beam-support connections, establishing the performance of these connections depending on the variables that commonly are present, which are: •Execution of beam-support connections welding only the web, or welding the beam to the support for the whole perimeter. •Disposition of stiffeners in the supports •Use 2UPN in box section or HEB section, which are the support types used in almost 100% building cases. To establish the influence of these variables in the connections performance, and the repercussion in the beams, a comparative analyse has been made with the resulting variables of the studied cases: •Stresses states in beams and connections. •Bending moments in beam ends. •Total and relative rotations in nodes. •Deflections in beams. Another aspect that the study allows us to analyze, is the valuation, from a costs point of view, of the execution of connections for the whole perimeter opposite to the web connections, or the execution of stiffeners. The results of this analyse, are strictly from an economic point of view, without prejudice that the safety or the preferences of the designers advise a certain solution. Finally, the third aspect that the study has allowed us to approach, is the comparison of the results that are obtained by the finite element model, nearer to the real behaviour, since the relative rotations in the connections are known, opposite to the results obtained with nodes and bars programs. So that, we can use the nodes and bars models, more versatile and quick, but knowing which are its limitations, and in which aspects and measures, we must weight the results. In the last part of the tesis, are relationated some of the topics on which it would be interesting to approach in later studies, with finite elements models, in order to know better the behaviour of the structural steel connections, in aspects that cannot be approached by the nodes and bars programs.

A protocol of selection, training and validation of the members of the panel for bread sensory analysis is proposed to assess the influence of wheat cultivar on the sensory quality of bread. Three cultivars of bread wheat and two cultivars of spelt wheat organically-grown under the same edaphoclimatic conditions were milled and baked using the same milling and baking procedure. Through the use of triangle tests, differences were identified between the five breads. Significant differences were found between the spelt breads and those made with bread wheat for the attributes ?crumb cell homogeneity? and ?crumb elasticity?. Significant differences were also found for the odor and flavor attributes, with the bread made with ?Espelta Navarra? being the most complex, from a sensory point of view. Based on the results of this study, we propose that sensory properties should be considered as breeding criteria for future work on genetic improvement.

Existe en el panorama edificado un patrimonio construido que se reconoce como Centro Comercial. Un conjunto entendido, en sentido genérico, como familia arquitectónica que tiene características propias y específicas que la identifican. El objeto de la presente tesis doctoral consiste en argumentar que este conjunto constituye un nuevo tipo en el panorama de las tipologías arquitectónicas. Un tipo con entidad propia, que se conecta a una forma diferente de entender la idea de modelo. Un concepto que va más allá de la consideración tradicional del término. Modelo virtual. Este tipo, que surge de una estructura teórica que hemos denominado teoría tipológica, se constituye en una herramienta más para el estudio y el desarrollo proyectual de los espacios arquitectónicos, tanto del propio Centro Comercial como del conjunto de la disciplina arquitectónica, como referencia legítima. El presente trabajo de tesis se inicia con un bloque introductorio denominado Método. Definimos en él una metodología que hemos llamado emocional. Trata de la oportunidad de la tesis. Del porqué de un título que recoge la palabra ignorada. Del interés que suscita el asunto en el contexto del momento presente. Oportunidad e interés en base a una vida profesional dedicada al mundo del Centro Comercial y a la importancia del patrimonio elegido como objeto de estudio. También ha sido un aliciente detectar como las planificaciones del territorio y de los ámbitos de las relaciones colectivas no han sido capaces de integrar un resultado satisfactorio. Quizás por no considerar la complejidad de sus muchas facetas. En consecuencia, el texto busca la esencia del Centro Comercial como soporte para la crítica de su impacto en los nuevos escenarios de relación que la sociedad y el entorno físico imponen. Ámbitos donde los mecanismos históricos del asociacionismo tradicional han dado paso a otros, como el Centro Comercial, de exaltación del individualismo, pero demandados por una sociedad que se identifica con ellos. Espacios que, con Galbraith, existen por de la perversidad intrínseca del binomio consumo-producción que inducen la perplejidad. Ésta pasa a formar parte de la esencia del nuevo espacio comercial, como quedó de manifiesto en el Congreso de Minnesota de 1997, sobre el Centro Comercial. Una sociedad que ha girado hacia el logro material en términos de culto, ocasionando creciente valor significante del consumo. Razón última de la humanidad al decir de Rem Koolhaas. Culto que desemboca en la urgencia de alcanzar niveles de estatus y de identificación con el grupo. Dos parámetros que marcan la relación con el otro. Relación de comparación que excita la necesidad de posesión de objetos que llevaban a recrear en el consumidor la ilusión de ser especiales, de no pasar desapercibidos. El producto de consumo, el objeto, se eleva a la consideración de valor social. En el Centro Comercial se venden valores. Marketing de valores. El deseo del individuo, no la necesidad, queda involucrado en el proceso. La oportunidad y el interés de este estudio surgen además para aclarar el significado de un espacio que sirve al consumidor y a su entorno. Un significado que alcanza sentido, entre otros, por la aparición de un nuevo contexto tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Suburbanización, automóvil, nivel de vida, un nuevo papel de la mujer. La Era del Consumo. Una era que genera la paradoja de un individuo con autodeterminación y autosuficiencia crecientes, en un mundo cada vez más condicionado y controlado por dinámicas de ofertas mediatizadas e ilimitadas. La arquitectura en este contexto ha de juzgarse por su relación con un hombre contemporáneo que camina hacia una progresiva excepcionalidad. Cerramos la presentación justificando el término ignorada que aparece en el Título de la Tesis. Subrayamos la escasa existencia de estudios estructurados que relacionen Centro Comercial y arquitectura. Realidad que se constata partiendo del libro de Pevsner, Historia de las Tipologías Arquitectónicas, de 1976. Analizamos también la aceptación que el Centro Comercial, valorado en algunos ámbitos como arquitectura populista. Primer Capítulo, los antecedentes. Se propone un recorrido histórico por la arquitectura comercial de todos los tiempos. El Documento busca concretar las características de la arquitectura comercial a lo largo de la historia para determinar relaciones entre ella y el Centro Comercial. Estas correspondencias van a permitir contestar la pregunta retórica que nos hacemos al inicio del Capítulo: ¿Es la arquitectura del Centro Comercial una arquitectura subsidiaria, o tiene personalidad propia independiente de la del mundo comercial? Con Zevi40, queremos dejar constancia que la relación arquitectura-historia es imprescindible en la tarea proyectual. Un análisis novedoso solo es posible desde la búsqueda de unas raíces auténticas. Así mismo, con Guy de Maupassant, estamos convencidos que “La arquitectura, a través de los siglos, ha tenido el privilegio de dar un símbolo a cada una de las épocas, de resumir con un pequeñísimo número de monumentos típicos, el modo de pensar, de soñar de una raza y de una civilización”. Este recorrido se inicia interpretando la arquitectura comercial minoica. Llegaremos, paso a paso, hasta el siglo XX, los grandes itinerarios comerciales y el Centro Comercial. Se descubren una serie de invariantes que permiten comparar y extraer conclusiones. Resulta novedoso constatar que el Centro Comercial nace para dar respuesta al hombre contemporáneo en su afán consumista. También lo es la rápida implantación y evolución del Centro Comercial en un corto periodo de sesenta años frente al ritmo sosegado de otras soluciones comerciales. Novedad es ver como el comercio y sus arquitecturas nacen abiertos, bajo tenderetes y el Centro Comercial se presenta cerrado. Así mismo, las referencias sacras constituyen un elemento de novedad para la reflexión, en un contexto materialista. Y tantas otras. En Minos, la óptica comercial ofrece otra visión de su legendaria cultura. ¿Palacio o plataforma logística?, gestión centralizada del intercambio, ¿vida pública y vida privada? Así, hasta llegar al siglo XIX. Sus las galerías y sus pasajes acristalados concebidos en primera instancia como medida de recomposición urbana. Espacio entendido desde lo público-privado, desde lo interior-exterior, desde el dentro-afuera, desde lo cerrado-abierto. Con los nuevos mercados de abastos, representan una revolución en el ámbito de la funcionalidad, de la máquina, de la gestión moderna y de las relaciones del ciudadano con la ciudad apoyado en base al intercambio de bienes de consumo. El Centro Comercial es heredero de esta transformación. El Gran Almacén, por otra parte, es el reflejo de otra gran revolución. La que va ligada a la producción y comercialización en masa, las comunicaciones, el precio fijo y el aumento del nivel de vida. El Centro Comercial reinterpreta estas situaciones insertándolas en un nuevo modelo de gestión. En el siglo XX, maestro en técnicas de venta, aparece el hipermercado. El Híper, con su carga de pedagogía, se incorpora al esquema orgánico del Centro Comercial. La tienda en si misma constituye la pieza base de dicho puzle orgánico. Es en esta época cuando la tienda empieza su despegue autónomo como arquitectura, aportando su experiencia. Tras ello, llegamos a las grandes rutas comerciales, que proponemos como metáfora del shopping. Cerramos el capítulo concluyendo con Eugenio Ferrer que “si establecemos una relación entre el espacio y el capitalismo, entonces podemos inferir que los espacios del consumo de masas (ECM) son configuraciones nuevas respecto al pasado (...), pero el sistema que lo introduce no lo es del todo”. Segundo Capítulo. Búsqueda de claves que permitan el reconocimiento del Centro Comercial. Llegados a este punto y con la perspectiva del tiempo cabe preguntarnos, ¿qué entendemos pues por Centro Comercial? ¿Cómo lo percibimos? Abordamos ahora el problema de la percepción del Centro Comercial y su significado. Además de constituirse en símbolo, referencia siempre presente, la eficacia del Shopping es una de las principales causas de su poder de atracción. El Centro Comercial resulta de la síntesis de la revolución del consumo y de la revolución de la gestión. Espacio eficaz del entretenimiento como destino. El usuario resuelve su vida cotidiana dentro de un hábitat que considera propio y que se entiende como el lugar hiperbólico de la transacción comercial. Espacio de la abundancia para el disfrute. Una arquitectura involucrada en esta eficacia. Su sentido del lugar no es otro que el Shopping, que se desenvuelve de forma análoga en todas partes. El hogar del consumidor. Las nuevas catedrales. Las catedrales del consumo. Destino místico. Lugar de peregrinación para el consumidor fervoroso. Espacio sagrado que integra al usuario en la cultura dominante. Cultura del consumo. Templos, donde el tiempo ha perdido su sentido. Paraíso. Un espacio donde la altura, la luz natural, la dimensión general refuerzan el carácter sacro de un espacio para una nueva religión laica. Un espacio seguro, protegido que nos acerca a ideas como la de útero materno, con su carga de calidez y de significación erótica aplicado al encuentro compra-comprador y, ligado a ello, la literatura especializada habla del Centro Comercial como nave espacial hiperesterilizada o de agujero negro que absorbe la energía cultural. Más allá, la simulación, donde se percibe un simulacro de ciudad. Simulacro coherente con todo lo que el Shopping desencadena a su alrededor. El lugar de los sueños, de la fantasía. Aquí los productos se han metamorfoseado en fetiches, en significados. Televisión tridimensional, donde el usuario actúa guiado por una pulsión similar al zapping. Espacio lúdico de la fascinación por comprar o de imaginar que se compra. Espacio de simulaciones que llevan a la ensoñación. Un nuevo lugar que sustituye al espacio cotidiano, con el señuelo de la protección, en un contexto imaginariamente público. Espacio de la hiperrealidad donde no se distingue la realidad de la fantasía, donde tras episodios de confusión y desconcierto, se borran las fronteras con lo imaginario. Espacio mágico, escenario del gran espectáculo del consumo, controlado milimétricamente, al modo de la visita a un gran monumento, que ha de sobrevivir a los tiempos para dar testimonio de nuestro momento. Un icono, un símbolo que transmite un mensaje, que solo el consumidor es capaz de interpretar. Una agitada mezcla, sin precedentes, de percepciones que hablan de perplejidad y asombro ante el fenómeno del Centro Comercial, su espacio y las reacciones del hombre contemporáneo. ¿Cuáles serían las claves que nos permitirían reconocer la calidad esencial de un Centro Comercial, en esta concurrencia de perplejidades? Primero, la función de servicio. Un espacio donde ocurren muchas más cosas que lo obvio, que la compra. Un edificio que se involucra con el entorno de la mano de lo inesperado, la sorpresa y las expectativas. Esta vocación de servicio conecta Centro Comercial y naturaleza arquitectónica. Función que sugiere percepciones ligadas a la experiencia de compra. Organismo que vive y late al unísono con su visitante, colocándose al servicio de sus necesidades, de su afán de consumo, del que vive. Segundo, la comunidad servida. El Centro comercial sirve a una sociedad concreta. La sociedad consumista. Una nueva sociedad que se identifica con el edificio desarrollando un sentido de comunidad al nivel de sus deseos. Esta comunidad que se configura a su alrededor, constituye el activo más poderoso para el éxito de su realidad cotidiana y de su futuro. Tercero, un compromiso de carácter holístico. La economía de la experiencia aplicada al afán consumista de una sociedad identificada con su Centro, da lugar a una experiencia holística planificada. Diseño emocional. Colaboración para el éxito de un conjunto de establecimientos comerciales que participan en la aventura espacio-comercial del Centro Comercial. Ellos son los inductores primarios del consumo. Pero esta colaboración tiene su culminación en la amplificación del mensaje, como un inmenso altavoz, que proviene de la unidad configurada por todos ellos. El reflejo de esta amplificación de mensajes, desde la poderosa unidad constituida, es el aumento de la rentabilidad, fin último de la operación. Cuarto, la forma a través de una identificación de carácter gestáltico. Desde la lectura gestáltica que hacemos de la unidad holística, se advierte una poderosa capacidad de comunicación del sistema con su contexto. Centro y entorno se tornan entonces cómplices que complementan sus realidades. El Centro Comercial, arquitectura estructurada como sistema se percibe –ha de percibirse- como forma unitaria que procede de una mirada de raíz gestáltica que continuamente la recompone desde una óptica espacial y física, ligada a la experiencia individual. Esta unidad formal, más allá de la forma real, se constituye en esencia de de su arquitectura. Quinto, el Centro Comercial como sistema. Un sistema soportado por la Teoría General de Sistemas. La consideración del Centro Comercial como sistema es consecuencia de su estructura holística. El todo no se comporta como la suma de las partes y estas no lo hacen como lo harían en solitario. De aquí surge la necesidad de diálogo permanente entre la comercialización –proceso de incorporación de partes- y su traducción al mundo del diseño –proceso de articular arquitectónicamente las partes. Como sistema así configurado, el Centro Comercial se inserta en el paradigma contemporáneo, lo que genera realidades duales que no son excluyentes y reacciones de perplejidad e incertidumbre que el sistema corrige con su capacidad de autorregulación. Aparece también el espectador cuántico, el visitante, el consumidor, que interactúa con el sistema. Desde las herramientas que nos aporta la idea de sistema complejo, afrontamos el Mix Comercial -en definitiva la eficaz localización de las piezas en orden a sus relaciones y al organismo resultante- y su incidencia en la arquitectura que estamos concibiendo. Una arquitectura impredecible por lo mutable, que se erige en reto de la operación y del diseñador. Diseño que, de la mano del concepto de sistema se convierte en herramienta a mayor gloria de la operación global. El debate del estilismo no será más que el resultado del análisis en busca del éxito de esta operación. Sexto, una arquitectura de la negociación. Negociación como mecanismo proyectual y como resultado. La solución de proyecto nunca resulta evidente en el Centro Comercial como consecuencia de lo imprevisible del propio proceso de configuración. Su concreción solo puede ser fruto del compromiso de todos los agentes por conseguir el objetivo de la operación. Esto se consigue desde el equilibrio de intereses. Comerciales y de diseño. Un compromiso con la negociación y una negociación íntimamente ligada a la coordinación. Séptimo, el espacio y el tiempo. El debate espacio-tiempo condiciona y estructura la percepción del Centro Comercial. Introducimos conceptos como cronotopo –el instante y el lugar donde ocurre algo- y paradoja –incoherencia de la relación causa efecto- que sitúan el vínculo entre el tiempo y el espacio del Centro Comercial en un contexto de Shopping. En el discurrir paralelo del tiempo histórico –el tiempo de fuera- y del tiempo interior, el de dentro del Centro Comercial –tiempo presente o intemporalidad-, se produce el triunfo social del Centro Comercial que se traduce en haber sabido resolver en el espacio y en el tiempo las paradojas postmodernas del hombre contemporáneo. Octavo, de lo global. Globalidad que no es ajena a lo local. Una arquitectura que insertada en la dinámica de una economía de ámbito mundial, refleja las contradicciones que ella impone, fundamentalmente en los procesos de inclusión y exclusión, afectando de manera decisiva al debate de lo local, que el Centro Comercial debe incorporar como herramienta ineludible de reconocimiento. Terminamos el capítulo segundo manifestando como estas ocho claves, asumidas en su conjunto, confirman que el Centro Comercial puede aparecer como un todo conceptual cohesionado, pasando a formar parte de una familia arquitectónica coherente, cuya estructura funcional somos capaces de establecer. El Capítulo Tercero presenta con detalle la figura del arquitecto Víctor Gruen, creador reconocido del moderno Centro Comercial. Presentamos su trayectoria profesional observando como las diferentes claves analizadas en capítulos anteriores van apareciendo de manera natural a lo largo de ella "Victor Gruen may well have been the most influential architect of the twentieth century." Las paradojas a lo largo de su carrera fueron notables. Sin embargo siempre apareció como un hombre recto. Garret Eckbo, reconocido paisajista y colaborador de Gruen en el Centro Comercial peatonal del Centro urbano de Fresno, California, se asombraba de que alguien como Gruen hubiese sido capaz de combinar cortesía y humanidad en la carrera de ratas (sic) en la que se convirtió el universo de la comercialización americana y mantener la integridad542. Philip Johnson, en 1962, ponderando las muchas habilidades de Gruen manifestó que no estaba seguro si alguno de ellos, arquitectos artistas, hubiera sido capaz de hacer lo que Gruen hizo. A más, sobre Gruen, manifestó lo siguiente: "... El va más allá de la creación de un bello edificio. En jugar con la gente y sugerir lo que tienen que hacer, es un maestro. Y obtiene buenos resultados como hace la escultura. El suyo es un arte cívico, un sentido cívico.... Él es capaz de sentarse y poner cosas juntas. No es pomposo ni vano. Yo no me reuniría con él para hablar del diseño (de edificios). Víctor siente que cuando se habla de diseño se está ignorando todo el contexto... Su arquitectura es poderosamente limpia, no vuela la fantasía. Pero cuando te haces con su complejidad, ves que has descubierto algo más allá del diseño.... No puedes decir que haya alguien como él. La arquitectura tiene la suerte de tenerle como arquitecto..." Philip Johnson. Article in Fortune Review. 1962. El Documento de tesis cierra la visión de Gruen realizando un recorrido por los diferentes capítulos de su libro esencial, Shopping Towns Usa: The Planning of Shopping Centers. Solo su índice resulta un monumento al proceso de gestación del Centro Comercial. El libro, aquí simplemente mostrado en su estructura básica como un silencioso testigo, es la referencia canónica los Centros Comerciales contemporáneos, desde su aparición. . El Cuarto Capítulo del Documento de tesis es una recapitulación del trabajo anterior, en el que se sintetizan los conceptos de función y estilo relacionados con el Centro Comercial, se define en qué consiste cada uno de ellos y como, a partir de ahí, podemos afirmar que nos encontramos ante un tipo arquitectónico nuevo en el panorama de la disciplina arquitectónica. Terminamos el Capítulo integrando el Centro Comercial con un cuerpo teórico de referencias que se remiten a un tipo arquitectónico concreto y particular, acogiendo su singularidad como fenómeno arquitectónico autónomo. Como Conclusión de la tesis, resultado de todo lo anterior es decir, como consecuencia de la integración de un torrente de percepciones e intuiciones en un cuerpo teórico de referencias, deducidas de la existencia de unas claves que estructuran y penetran la esencia del singular modelo estudiado, haciéndolo detectable y seductor, resultan las características de un tipo arquitectónico con entidad propia que ordena, orienta y supedita la realidad y la existencia de esta nueva arquitectura. Una arquitectura nunca antes definida como tal, en el panorama tipológico de la disciplina. Teoría tipológica para una nueva arquitectura, que hemos ido proponiendo a lo largo del trabajo y que es coherente con los diferentes parámetros que se han analizado. Un conjunto edificado que, desde el estudio de sus claves esenciales y de sus invariantes perceptibles, aparece ahora más cercano, más familiar. Tanto que es posible destilar desde este conocimiento cercano e íntimo, una síntesis útil como referencia proyectual y como referencia para las grandes cuestiones que preocupan al discurrir del debate arquitectónico y sus ideas. El debate de la disciplina. El objeto de esta tesis, que consistía en establecer que el conjunto edificado que conocemos como Centro Comercial se constituye en un nuevo tipo en el panorama de las tipologías arquitectónicas, entendido el Centro Comercial en sentido genérico como familia arquitectónica con características propias y específicas que la hacen autónoma y reconocible, queda a nuestro juicio argumentado y justificado. ABSTRACT Within the frame of the built heritage there is a construction that is recognized as Shopping Center. An ensemble understood as an architectural family with its own specific recognizable characteristics. This thesis aims to explain that this building complex constitutes a new type in the panorama of architectural typology. This typology, with its singular identity, is connected to a way of understanding the idea of the model beyond an orthodox conception of the term understood as virtual model. This typology comes from a theoretical structure that we called typological theory, and it serves as yet another tool to reference the study and development design of the architectural spaces. In this first section, the Method, we emotionally explore the opportunities of this thesis. Why this typology has been ignored and the interest this work has in the present moment. An opportunity and an interest explained from an experience of a life dedicated to the world of Shopping Centers. The text then introduces the need for a rigorous knowledge of the Shopping Center’s essence in order to understand its impact in the frame of a new society and a new physical environment. A frame time where the historical mechanisms of association of civic community have given way to other gathering spaces like the Shopping Center, which encourages individualism, but is demanded by a society that relates to them. Spaces that, according to Galbraith, are a result of the intrinsic perversity of the unstoppable movement of the wheel of consumption-production. A society that has turned to worship of material achievement. Worship that provokes the appearance of an increasing value of consumption, according to Koolhaas, the only goal of humanity. Worship that ends in the need to reach certain status levels in the plane of a permanent comparison where the need of possession excites the consumer and gives them the illusion of being special. The product of consumption rises up to consideration of social values, entering a dynamic of marketing values, not only objects, but the desire of the individual remains. The study appears also to clarify the meaning of a space that serves the consumer and its context. A meaning that makes sense with the appearance of the suburbanization, the massive utilization of the car, the increase of living standards and the new role of women in the society after the Second World War, giving rise to the Age of Consumption. A world now determined and controlled by media and unlimited offers, where it’s necessary to place them in the context of the ordinary. An architecture that has to be judged precisely for its relation with this specific contemporary man. This section ends justifying the term ignored that appears in the Title of the Thesis, considering it in relation with the lack of studies structured about the Shopping Center and its architecture, drawing from Pevsner's work, A history of building types, 1976. Finally, the Shopping Center is analyzed with the most critical of thoughts, which considers it as populist architecture. The First Chapter, Precedents, proposes an historical tour of the commercial architecture throughout history. The Document looks to place on record the characteristics of the commercial architecture to set the connection between them and the Mall itself. These correspondences are going to allow us to answer the rhetorical question: is it the architecture of the Shopping Center a subsidiary architecture, or does it have its own personality independent from that of the commercial world? The reason of this historical search, citing Bruno Zevi, is that it is indispensable to establish the relationship between architecture and history, understating that an analysis is only possible when researching for their roots. Moreover, according to Guy de Maupassant, we are sure that architecture has had the privilege, across the centuries, of symbolizing as it were each age(…), through the harmony of lines and the charm of ornamentation all the grace and grandeur of an epoch. This historical reading, inseparable from a consistent design action, begins interpreting the commercial architecture of the Minoan to the 20th Century. Though this analysis of the big commercial itineraries and the study of the Shopping Center itself. A reading where we have found a series of constants that make it possible to draw conclusions from this comparison. The Mall appears to give response to the needs of a consumerist society. Comparing to the calm pace of the evolution of other commercial solutions, it is relevant its fast implantation and evolution in a short period of sixty years. Though via different solutions, the commercial spaces are considered taking into account the public-private relation, the interior-exterior, the inside-out, the closed-opened. Through that, the 19th century galleries and the food markets represent a revolution in functionality, in the machine, the modern management and the relations of the citizen within the city. All of this, the Mall inheritor feels. Likewise, the Department Store is the reflection of another great revolution. Production and commercialization en-mass, communications, the fixed price and increase of the living standard. The Mall reinterprets these situations inserting them in a new model of management. Already in the 20th century Mall and mass technologies of sale, the hypermarket is enthusiastically incorporated into the configuration of this organic scheme, constituting the base of one of the models, the French, that will be highly developed in the European continent. The shop itself constitutes, on the other hand, the key piece that completes the puzzle of the Mall and is in this epoch when it starts taking off as architecture, has an autonomous character. After all this, finally, we come to the big commercial routes, which we propose as metaphor of the shopping. Citing Eugenio Ferrer we can conclude that “If we establish a relation between the space and the capitalism, then we can infer that the spaces of the consumption of masses (ECM) are new configurations with regard to the past (...), but the system that introduces it it is not completely” Now we arrive at this point and with the perspective of time it is necessary to ask us, what do we understand about the Shopping Center? How do we perceive it? The second Chapter approaches the problem of the perception of the Mall and from this it is possible to detect and to identify key drivers that orientate the architectural comprehension of the space. The efficiency of the Shopping Center is its main power of attraction. A world that has ensued from the synthesis of the revolution of consumption and management. An effective cavern-like place of entertainment where the user, the consumer, the postmodern man solves his daily life inside a considered habitat. The hyperbolic place of commercial transaction. An abundance of space, that makes us perceive it as destination of entertainment. An architecture has evolved this efficiency, where the sense of place is at one with the sense of the Shopping. The home of the consumer. The new cathedrals. The cathedral of consumption. The place of peregrination for the fervent consumer. A sacred space that integrates the user in the dominant culture. A temple, where time itself has stopped existing. In this paroxysm, an expression of the Garden of Eden or Paradise itself. A space where the height, the natural daylight and the spatial dimension reinforce the sacred character of a new lay religion. Another common perception is that of a protected area, which leads to metaphors and considerations that suggest the idea of maternal womb, with its weight of erotic meaning, referring to the encounter of the shopper making a purchase. The literature also tells us about its perception as a sterile space capsule, a black hole that absorbs all cultural energy. Likewise, a world simulation where a mock city is perceived at first instance. Consistent with all that shopping triggers inside. A city, a space conceived as a place of dreams, fantasy, where the products have been metamorphosed into fetishes. Entertaining a television, three-dimensional television, where the user acts guided by a drive similar to zapping. A play area where the latest fascination is in the act of buying. Space simulations that unite and transcend creating atmospheres that lead to reverie. A new space replacing the daily space with the lure of safe space in a public context. A hyper-reality space with reality and fantasy, where borders are erased with imaginary episodes of confusion and bewilderment, without distinction. The charm and fascination of a space that reads like magic. The magic of a space which is defined as stage extravaganza, the large theatre, the consumer surveys in the fine control mode in which you visit a national monument. The shopping center has to survive the times to be a testimony of our time. An icon, a symbol that conveys a message, the message reads ‘consumer’. In short, a Shopping Center is a mix of unprecedented insights that speak of a widespread phenomenon of bewilderment. Its space and the reactions of contemporary man unfold in it like a fish in water. What are the key aspects which allow us to recognize the essential quality of a shopping center in this concurrence of perplexities? First, we want to record a service function of space much deeper than the immediately obvious, i.e. a purchase occurs. A building that appears to be involved with the environment and its people from the hand of the unexpected circumstances; surprise and attention. And that, in turn, also involves the visitor beyond the purchase. This dedication to service closely links the mall with its architectural nature. It is not the function of a lifeless machine. It is a feature that suggests unsuspected perceptions linked to the purchase, which speaks of an organism that lives and breathes in unison with the visitor. Second, in addition to the vocation of service-oriented desire for consumption, the Mall environment serves a particular society - The consumer society. A new society which relates to building a sense of community developed to the level of their desires. This community also constitutes the most powerful asset to the success of the daily life of the Shopping Center. Third, we emphasize that the so called economy of the experience is combined with the consumer zeal of a company that is identified by the Shopping Center. It connects to form a holistic and planned experience. This experience takes shape in the entity that ensues from the premeditated association and synergy, in the sense of a collaboration for success. A set of concrete commercial and independent establishments, take part in the spatial and commercial adventure that is the Mall and they are the instigators of the consumption. This holistic behavior finds culmination in the amplification of a claim that becomes unitary, like an immense force that leads to an increased profitability to all the levels. Consummation is a reference of one human being overturned in an architecture assimilated into a legitimate, emotional design with stability. A holistic quality is born of the essence of the building - and by virtue of the Conditions of Alexander, Christopher Alexander, determines the system condition of the Shopping Center. Fourth, we propose to establish what character the Mall will form when joined with the concept of its typology. This is going to allow the architectural work to be formed. As a result of the holistic structure that we see, the Mall is perceived as a system whose parts have their own function, justifying their existence in the ecosystem. Across a gestalt there is a powerful capacity of communication between the system and its context. We visualize on the one that stands out our building, turning both, Center and environment, in accomplices of a few special relations who complement each other in his realities. This relationship within a complex and diverse environment gives the Mall a range of unique spatial perceptions, the result of disparate experiences, which because of its root origin of gestalt, are integrated into a unified and coordinated manner fully intelligible and organized. This is the final formal essence of the Shopping Center. We can conclude here that the Mall as architecture is a structured system and should be perceived as a unit both from a physical and spatial perspective as this is the essence of its architecture. Fifth, the Mall as a system. A system which is being supported by a broad theoretical corpus, the General Systems Theory, which offers sufficient methodology to descend into consideration and give an enlightened conclusion on the overall understanding of the Mall. Consideration of the Mall as a system is a result of its holistic structure. The whole does not behave like any of the parties and they do not behave the way they used to before belonging to the whole, because they inhibit many of their qualities to their advantage. It arises the need for an ongoing dialogue between marketing processes and its translation into the physical world, the design. The system generates multiple perceptions to be integrated into a body which is to be understood as unitary. As a system, the Mall is inserted into the contemporary paradigm, creating dual realities that are not exclusive and are reactions of uncertainty that the system be properly designed at all levels, faced with their ability to self-regulate. Likewise, considering the visitor, the customer, like the quantum spectator who interacts with the system permanently. Moreover, a complex system confronts us with the Commercial mix, the effective location of parts in order to relate to the body and its importance in the architecture we are conceiving. Unpredictable architecture, which stands as the challenge of the operation and the designer. Design that becomes the tool of the system to create success for the overall operation. The discussion of the styling is merely the result of analysis that also seeks the success of the system, i.e. the styling should send the right message for the environment to ensure its survival. Sixth, the idea of negotiation as an architecture project, a mechanism inherent to the status of the proposed system. The project solution is never evident at the Shopping Center because of the unpredictability of the process itself. It can only be the fruit of the commitment of all stakeholders to achieve the objective of the operation. This is achieved from the balance of interests, of commercial and design. A commitment to negotiation and a negotiation linked to coordination. The pursuit of stability is key, as instability is always present and constantly requires strategies to build the object you are configuring. Seventh, proposes space-time itself as a circumstance that determines and structures the perception of the Mall in a singular way. We introduce concepts as chronotope and paradox to help us place the relationship between time and space within the Mall in the context of shopping. A consequence of the parallel flow of historical time - the time outside - and the time inside the Mall, the big shopping center formula is precisely that of having the feeling of timelessness in the space. The social triumph of the mall is the ability to resolve in space and in time all postmodern paradoxes and, beyond that, of contemporary man, condensing into a small space and time an enormous amount of cultural symbols, often contradictory, but they attract the practice of consumerism. Eighth, global level. Globalization which doesn’t ignore the local level. Architecture that is inserted into the dynamics of a global economy, reflects the contradictions that it imposes, mainly in the processes of inclusion and exclusion. Inclusion and exclusion affect the debate of the local level, which the Mall must incorporate as an unavoidable tool of recognition. The eight fundamental principles, when applied as a whole, confirm that the built heritage, which corresponds to the general Mall idea, can be presented as a cohesive conceptual whole. This becomes part of a coherent architectural family, whose functional structures are able to be established. The Third chapter presents in a detailed way the figure of the architect Victor Gruen, recognized as the creator of the modern Mall. Studying his professional experience, it is shown how the different keys analyzed in previous chapters are appearing in a natural way. Garret Eckbo, the recognized landscape painter and collaborator of Gruen was astonished how Gruen had been capable of combining comity and humanity in this career of rates, into that the American commercialization turned, Johnson, in 1962, weighting many Gruen's skills demonstrated that he was not sure if anyone of them, architects artists, had been capable of doing what Gruen did. He goes beyond just the creation of a beautiful building. In playing on people and suggesting what they ought to do, he is a master. (…) his architecture is clean - hardly architecture, no flights of fancy. But when you get hold of its complexity, you've got something beyond the design... You can't say there's someone like him. The Document of the thesis closes with Gruen's vision of realizing a tour through the different chapters of his essential book, Shopping towns USA: The Planning of Shopping Centers. It’s mere index turns out to be a monument to the process of the gestation of the Mall. The book, simply acted in its basic structure as a silent witness, as the canonical reference for the contemporary Malls. The Fourth Chapter of the Document of the thesis is a recapitulation of the previous work, which synthesizes the concepts of function and style related to the Shopping Center, and clearly defines how they are defined so we can conclude that we have found an architectural new type in the panorama of the architectural discipline. Therefore, the Conclusion of the thesis integrates this development in a theoretical body of references that relate to an architectural specific and particular type, which receives the singularity of the Shopping Center as an architectural independent phenomenon as it has tried to demonstrate from the beginning of the work. To conclude, as a result of the integrative process and the development of the theoretical body of references, the essential characteristics of the order and concept of the architectural typology form the existence of a new architecture; architecture never before defined as such, in the theoretical typology of the discipline. A theoretical typology for a new architecture is proposed throughout the discussed research and forms a conclusion of the different parameters that have been analysed. As a building complex, from the study of the essential characteristics and of the perceptible constants, the typology is more clearly defined and thus, becomes a useful tool and precedent for the consideration of the discipline. The thesis then justifies how the building complex known as Shopping Center constitutes a new type of architectural typology.

European universities are currently going through a process of change in order to meet the common goals set for higher education by the European Commission. They are revising their educational models to adjust them to the guidelines of the ‘‘Bologna Process’’ and are devising an institutional strategy for its implementation. In practical terms, this means aligning former national degrees and diplomas to standard European Bachelor and Masters degrees and PhD doctorates, by creating acknowledged professional qualification benchmarks that also include adjusted course lengths and contents. This process, in the end, mostly affects academic staff members who have a fundamental role to play in carrying out the pedagogical reforms on the teaching front. Besides presenting a commentary on the institutional approach of one particular technical university in Spain, the purpose of this paper is to propose, from the authors’ point of view as lecturers, a strategy which has the potential to create a favourable atmosphere for carrying out such a reform.
