Neuronal growth is a complex process involving many intra- and extracellular mechanisms which are collaborating conjointly to participate to the development of the nervous system. More particularly, the early neocortical development involves the creation of a multilayered structure constituted by neuronal growth (driven by axonal or dendritic guidance cues) as well as cell migration. The underlying mechanisms of such structural lamination not only implies important biochemical changes at the intracellular level through axonal microtubule (de)polymerization and growth cone advance, but also through the directly dependent stress/stretch coupling mechanisms driving them. Efforts have recently focused on modeling approaches aimed at accounting for the effect of mechanical tension or compression on the axonal growth and subsequent soma migration. However, the reciprocal influence of the biochemical structural evolution on the mechanical properties has been mostly disregarded. We thus propose a new model aimed at providing the spatially dependent mechanical properties of the axon during its growth. Our in-house finite difference solver Neurite is used to describe the guanosine triphosphate (GTP) transport through the axon, its dephosphorylation in guanosine diphosphate (GDP), and thus the microtubules polymerization. The model is calibrated against experimental results and the tensile and bending mechanical stiffnesses are ultimately inferred from the spatially dependent microtubule occupancy. Such additional information is believed to be of drastic relevance in the growth cone vicinity, where biomechanical mechanisms are driving axonal growth and pathfinding. More specifically, the confirmation of a lower stiffness in the distal axon ultimately participates in explaining the controversy associated to the tensile role of the growth cone.

Laser shock processing (LSP) is increasingly applied as an effective technology for the improvement of metallic materials mechanical properties in different types of components as a means of enhancement of their fatigue life behavior. As reported in previous contributions by the authors, a main effect resulting from the application of the LSP technique consists on the generation of relatively deep compression residual stresses fields into metallic components allowing an improved mechanical behaviour, explicitly the life improvement of the treated specimens against wear, crack growth and stress corrosion cracking. Additional results accomplished by the authors in the line of practical development of the LSP technique at an experimental level (aiming its integral assessment from an interrelated theoretical and experimental point of view) are presented in this paper. Concretely, experimental results on the residual stress profiles and associated mechanical properties modification successfully reached in typical materials under different LSP irradiation conditions are presented. In this case, the specific behavior of a widely used material in high reliability components (especially in nuclear and biomedical applications) as AISI 316L is analyzed, the effect of possible “in-service” thermal conditions on the relaxation of the LSP effects being specifically characterized. This study analyses the variation of main physical-mechanical properties of wood along the longitudinal and radial directions of the tree for Abies alba Mill. growing in the Spanish Pyrenees. Small clear specimens were used to study the properties of volumetric shrinkage (VS), density (?), hardness (H), bending strength (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), maximum compressive strength parallel to the grain (MCS) and impact strength (K). Several models of properties variation in the longitudinal and radial directions were analyzed. Main trends of variation of properties throughout the tree stem were identified although none of them could be fitted to predictive statistical models. Along the longitudinal direction, the properties studied followed a downward trend from the base to the crown, which was not significant in all cases, indicating that no differences in quality existed. Throughout the radial direction the trend is upward for the first 40-50 growth rings, after which it slopes downwards, more gently at first until rings 70-75 and then more steeply. This behaviour is related to variation in wood structure from the pith to the bark, depending on whether the wood is juvenile, sapwood or heartwood, and to wood maturity and microfibril angle. Authors encourage carrying further studies on other populations of A. alba in the Spanish Pyrenees to check if the trends found in this study apply to other provenances.

Long-length ultrafine-grained (UFG) Ti rods are produced by equal-channel angular pressing via the conform scheme (ECAP-C) at 200 °C, which is followed by drawing at 200 °C. The evolution of microstructure, macrotexture, and mechanical properties (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, failure stress, uniform elongation, elongation to failure) of pure Ti during this thermo-mechanical processing is studied. Special attention is also paid to the effect of microstructure on the mechanical behavior of the material after macrolocalization of plastic flow. The number of ECAP-C passes varies in the range of 1–10. The microstructure is more refined with increasing number of ECAP-C passes. Formation of homogeneous microstructure with a grain/subgrain size of 200 nm and its saturation after 6 ECAP-C passes are observed. Strength properties increase with increasing number of ECAP passes and saturate after 6 ECAP-C passes to a yield strength of 973 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 1035 MPa, and a true failure stress of 1400 MPa (from 625, 750, and 1150 MPa in the as-received condition). The true strain at failure failure decreases after ECAP-C processing. The reduction of area and true strain to failure values do not decrease after ECAP-C processing. The sample after 6 ECAP-C passes is subjected to drawing at 200¯C resulting in reduction of a grain/subgrain size to 150 nm, formation of (10 View the MathML source1¯0) fiber texture with respect to the rod axis, and further increase of the yield strength up to 1190 MPa, the ultimate tensile strength up to 1230 MPa and the true failure stress up to 1600 MPa. It is demonstrated that UFG CP Ti has low resistance to macrolocalization of plastic deformation and high resistance to crack formation after necking.

A strategy is presented to optimize out-of-autoclave processing of quasi-isotropic carbon fiber-reinforced laminates. Square panels of 4.6 mm nominal thickness with very low porosity ð6 0:2%Þ were manufactured by compression molding at low pressure (0.2 MPa) by careful design of the temperature cycle to maximize the processing window. The mechanisms of void migration during processing were ascertained by means of X-ray microtomography and the effect of ply clustering on porosity and on void shape was explained. Finally, the effect of porosity and ply clustering on the compressive strength before and after impact was studied.

Composite laminates on the nanoscale have shown superior hardness and toughness, but little is known about their high temperature behavior. The mechanical properties (elastic modulus and hardness) were measured as a function of temperature by means of nanoindentation in Al/SiC nanolaminates, a model metal–ceramic nanolaminate fabricated by physical vapor deposition. The influence of the Al and SiC volume fraction and layer thicknesses was determined between room temperature and 150 °C and, the deformation modes were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, using a focused ion beam to prepare cross-sections through selected indents. It was found that ambient temperature deformation was controlled by the plastic flow of the Al layers, constrained by the SiC, and the elastic bending of the SiC layers. The reduction in hardness with temperature showed evidence of the development of interface-mediated deformation mechanisms, which led to a clear influence of layer thickness on the hardness.

Based on our previous knowledge on Cu/Nb nanoscale metallic multilayers (NMMs), Cu/WNMMs show a good potential for applications as heat skins in plasma experiments and armors, and it could be expected that the substitution of Nb byWwould increase the strength, particularly at high temperatures. To check this hypothesis, Cu/WNMMs with individual layer thicknesses ranging between 5 and 30 nm were deposited by physical vapour deposition, and their mechanical properties were measured by nanoindentation. The results showed that, contrary to Cu/Nb NMMs, the hardness was independent of the layer thickness and decreased rapidlywith temperature, especially above 200 °C. This behavior was attributed to the growth morphology of theWlayers aswell as the jagged Cu/W interface, both a consequence of the lowW adatom mobility during deposition. Therefore, future efforts on the development of Cu/Wmultilayers should concentrate on optimization of theWdeposition parameters via substrate heating and/or ion assisted deposition to increase the W adatom mobility during deposition.

Poly(L‐lactide) is a widely studied biomaterial, currently approved for use in a range of medical devices. Its mechanical properties can be tailored giving the material different crystallinity degrees. PLLA presents a complex non‐linear behaviour that depends not only on structural parameters such as crystallinity degree but also on external parameters such as strain rate and temperature. Failure of polymeric implants is attributed to their intrinsic time‐dependent performance under static loading conditions.

This paper reports on the thermal behavior and mechanical properties of nanocomposites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UP) modified with poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) and reinforced with an organically modified clay (cloisite 30B). To optimize the dispersion of 30B and the mixing of PCL in the UP resin, two different methods were employed to prepare crosslinked UP–PCL-30B hybrid nanocomposites. Besides, two samples of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) of different molecular weight (PCL2: Mn = 2.103g.mol−1 and PCL50: Mn = 5.104g.mol−1) were used at several concentrations (4, 6, 10 wt%). The 30B concentration was 4 wt% in all the nanocomposites. The morphology of the samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analysis of X-ray patterns reveals that intercalated structures have been found for all ternary nanocomposites, independently of the molecular weight, PCL concentration and the preparation method selected. A slight rise of the glass transition temperature, Tg, is observed in UP/PCL/4%30B ternary nanocomposites regarding to neat UP. The analysis of the tensile properties of the ternary (hybrid) systems indicates that UP/4%PCL2/4%30B nanocomposite improves the tensile strength and elongation at break respect to the neat UP while the Young modulus remains constant

A study of the mechanical properties of adobe bricks collected from houses and land dividing walls in Aveiro district, Portugal, representative of existing traditional constructions, was conducted. Cylindrical adobe specimens were subjected to simple compression and splitting tests. From these tests it was possible to evaluate the strength capacity, stiffness and deformation evolution for increasing loading. Correlations between the evaluated properties were determined, and the results obtained for houses and land dividing walls were compared. This study contributes for the characterization of adobes traditionally used in Aveiro district, and provides reference values that can be considered in rehabilitation processes
