This document contains the different parts of a plain antenna which is able to establish a satellite communication. This antenna has been designed in Ku Band. Nowadays this band is specially used by satellite communications and shows numerous advantages, for instance the antennas have small size therefore these antennas are cheaper. The SIW technology is a fundamental part of this project from start to end, because this technology has a lot of applications and leads in this field. Not only have been simulated all the elements of this antenna but also have been built to compare both simulations and measurements.

This document shows the design of the radiating element of the conformal adaptive antenna of multiple planar arrays GEODA-SARAS. Operating from 2.05 to 2.3 GHz in the S-band with dual circular polarization in Tx and Rx, it is possible to track and communicate with several satellites because of its adaptive beam. The antenna is based on a set of similar triangular arrays which are divided in sub-arrays of five elements called cells.

Two design procedures for Radial Line Slot Antennas (RLSAs) with circular polarization and either maximum gain or an arbitrary shaped pattern are proposed. Firstly, a method to design a RLSA with any desired pattern is presented. It is based on an optimization algorithm and some measures to ensure its fast convergence and stability need to be taken. Secondly, a fast technique to calculate the length and the position of every slot in a high gain RLSA with uniform field distribution is described. Both procedures are vali dated with the design of three antennas with different characteristics.

This paper explains the progress accomplished in the WP03 of the Terasense Project (TERAHERTZ TECHNOLOGY FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC SENSING APPLICATIONS) approved in the 2008 CONSOLIDERINGENIO program (project CSD2008-0068). The Radiation and Sensor Measurement Lab (RSMLab) is a laboratory based in the existing antenna measurement laboratories at UPM, UC3 and UNiOvi and the new capacities to extend the measurement range from the millimetre wave to the THz region. This laboratory is intended to be shared in more than one place and with more than one institution, in such a way that we could take advantage of other research financial sources and contributions from other institutions with interest in the same field of measurements. One important task will be the international links between the RSMLab and other European and international institutions dedicated to the antenna and sensor measurement in the same frequency range.

One of the challenges of science and engineering nowadays is to develop new ways to supply energy in a sustainable and ecological mode. The fussion energy could be the final answer but a myriad of problems must be solved previously.

This investigation reports on a comparative study of the mechanical behavior at different temperatures of three different alkali-activated fly ash pastes chemically activated using sodium silicate. A control Portland cement (OPC) was used as a reference. In an attempt to simulate the conditions prevailing in the event of accidental fire, post-thermal mechanical tests were performed to determine the residual strength. It has therefore been established that FA based cements can be fabricated for construction purposes and these materials have great potential for fire resistance applications.

The most promising materials to be used as Plasma Facing Components(PFC),in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), are tungsten alloys. However these materials have to withstand extreme operating conditions such as those that will be used inside the reactor.

The EFDA-ITER programme for materials wants to develop new structural materials for future nuclear magnetic fusion reactors. In this context, special attention must be paid in the development of new composite materials that could support the hard working conditions of the nuclear fusion reactors: high temperature, high stresses, and high radiation.

Urban Agriculture was a common practice in the old times. However after a period of low interest by urban population there is a movement of renaissance of urban agriculture especially in the new megalopolis. It is important to understand the role of UA in the new framework, and the interface of urban and rural agricultures, with their comparative advantages. Thus, we describe the impact of UA in several scenarios: political, socioeconomic and environmental. As a consequence several actions should be developed for improving the situation, with the stimulus to UA: urban planning, food value chain, appropriate technology, education and extension services, entertainment and leisure, selection of botanic varieties and agrochemical inputs, design and landscape and good farming practices. As a complement, there is an analysis of the Urban Greening Value Organization in our society. In the paper there is a description of the situation of urban agriculture in Spain (located mainly in roofs, walls, indoor and ground places) the existence of local regulations, barriers and opportunities in the new situation. Due to the social dimension of urban agriculture there are some comments about the role of the more significant stakeholders, and the goals and the structure of the neighbor communities.

Previous work of the research group [1-4] demonstrated the viability of using periodic lattices of micro and nanopillars, called Bio-photonic sensing Cells (BICELLs), as an optical biosensor vertically characterized by visible spectrometry. Also we have studied theoretically [5] the performance of the BICELLs by 2D and 3D simulation in orde r to optimize the biosensing response. In this work we present the fabrication and biosensing comparison of different geometrical parameters on periodic lattices of pillars in order to discuss theoretical conclusions with these results. In this way, we have explored the biosensing response of other patter ns such as crosses, stars, cylinders, concentrical cylinders (Figure 1). Also we introduced a novel method to test the BICELLs in a cost-effective way by using an ultra-thin film of SU-8 spin-coated onto the patterns to reproduce the effect of a biofilm attached to the biosensor surface. Finally we have tested the biosensing response of the different geometries by the well-known Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) immunoassay and compared with the theoretical simulation.

The software engineering community has paid little attention to non-functional requirements, or quality attributes, compared with studies performed on capture, analysis and validation of functional requirements. This circumstance becomes more intense in the case of distributed applications. In these applications we have to take into account, besides the quality attributes such as correctness, robustness, extendibility, reusability, compatibility, efficiency, portability and ease of use, others like reliability, scalability, transparency, security, interoperability, concurrency, etc. In this work we will show how these last attributes are related to different abstractions that coexist in the problem domain. To achieve this goal, we have established a taxonomy of quality attributes of distributed applications and have determined the set of necessary services to support such attributes.

Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) modulation format has been shown as a robust solution for next-generation optical transmission systems. One key device enabling such systems is the delay interferometer, converting the signal phase information into intensity modulation to be detected by the photodiodes. Usually, Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is used for demodulating DPSK signals. In this paper, we developed an MZI which is based on all-fiber Multimode Interference (MI) structure: a multimode fiber (MMF) located between two single-mode fibers (SMF) without any transition zones. The standard MZI is not very stable since the two beams go through two different paths before they recombine. In our design the two arms of the MZI are in the same fiber, which will make it less temperature-sensitive than the standard MZI. Performance of such MZI will be analyzed from transmission spectrum. Finally such all-fiber MI-based MZI (MI-MZI) is used to demodulate 10 Gbps DPSK signals. The demodulated signals are analyzed from eye diagram and bit error rate (BER).

Sustainability managementand Sustainability Reporting (SR) practices have dramatically increased during the last two decades, raising important questions about the relationship between internal practices and external communication. Previous literature on SR has almost exclusively highlighted the role of institutional and stakeholder pressures in driving its adoption. However, as surveys among reporters also identify internal benefits of SR, its full role for company-level sustainability management remains unclear. In order to address this question, we develop a framework accounting for four SR configurations, stemming from different levels of relative importance of external and internal motives for SR. A multiple case study involving four large Spanish companies serves to illustrate the framework and to identify company-level factors that act both as enablers and barriers of SR internal relevance. We conclude that motivations for SR, along with such internal factors, decisively influence its contribution to sustainability management.
