A detailed analysis of the impact of illumination on the electrical response of In0.5Ga0.5As surface nanostructures is carried out as a function of different relative humidity conditions. The importance of the surface-to-volume ratio for sensing applications is once more highlighted. From dark-to-photo conditions, the sheet resistance (SR) of a three-dimensional In0.5Ga0.5As nanostructure decays two orders of magnitude compared with that of a two-dimensional nanostructure. The electrical response is found to be vulnerable to the energy of the incident light and the external conditions. Illuminating with high energy light translates into an SR reduction of one order of magnitude under humid atmospheres, whereas it remains nearly unchanged under dry environments. Conversely, lighting with energy below the bulk energy bandgap, shows a negligible effect on the electrical properties regardless the local moisture. Both illumination and humidity are therefore needed for sensing. Photoexcited carriers can only contribute to conductivity if surface states are inactive due to water physisorption. The strong dependence of the electrical response on the environment makes these nanostructures very suitable for the development of highly sensitive and efficient sensing devices.

This work is an outreach approach to an ubiquitous recent problem in secondary-school education: how to face back the decreasing interest in natural sciences shown by students under ‘pressure’ of convenient resources in digital devices/applications. The approach rests on two features. First, empowering of teen-age students to understand regular natural events around, as very few educated people they meet could do. Secondly, an understanding that rests on personal capability to test and verify experimental results from the oldest science, astronomy, with simple instruments as used from antiquity down to the Renaissance (a capability restricted to just solar and lunar motions). Because lengths in astronomy and daily life are so disparate, astronomy basically involved observing and registering values of angles (along with times), measurements being of two types, of angles on the ground and of angles in space, from the ground. First, the gnomon, a simple vertical stick introduced in Babylonia and Egypt, and then in Greece, is used to understand solar motion. The gnomon shadow turns around during any given day, varying in length and thus angle between solar ray and vertical as it turns, going through a minimum (noon time, at a meridian direction) while sweeping some angular range from sunrise to sunset. Further, the shadow minimum length varies through the year, with times when shortest and sun closest to vertical, at summer solstice, and times when longest, at winter solstice six months later. The extreme directions at sunset and sunrise correspond to the solstices, swept angular range greatest at summer, over 180 degrees, and the opposite at winter, with less daytime hours; in between, spring and fall equinoxes occur, marked by collinear shadow directions at sunrise and sunset. The gnomon allows students to determine, in addition to latitude (about 40.4° North at Madrid, say), the inclination of earth equator to plane of its orbit around the sun (ecliptic), this fundamental quantity being given by half the difference between solar distances to vertical at winter and summer solstices, with value about 23.5°. Day and year periods greatly differing by about 2 ½ orders of magnitude, 1 day against 365 days, helps students to correctly visualize and interpret the experimental measurements. Since the gnomon serves to observe at night the moon shadow too, students can also determine the inclination of the lunar orbital plane, as about 5 degrees away from the ecliptic, thus explaining why eclipses are infrequent. Independently, earth taking longer between spring and fall equinoxes than from fall to spring (the solar anomaly), as again verified by the students, was explained in ancient Greek science, which posited orbits universally as circles or their combination, by introducing the eccentric circle, with earth placed some distance away from the orbital centre when considering the relative motion of the sun, which would be closer to the earth in winter. In a sense, this can be seen as hint and approximation of the elliptic orbit proposed by Kepler many centuries later.

This doctoral thesis explores some of the possibilities that near-field optics can bring to photovoltaics, and in particular to quantum-dot intermediate band solar cells (QD-IBSCs). Our main focus is the analytical optimization of the electric field distribution produced in the vicinity of single scattering particles, in order to produce the highest possible absorption enhancement in the photovoltaic medium in their surroundings. Near-field scattering structures have also been fabricated in laboratory, allowing the application of the previously studied theoretical concepts to real devices. We start by looking into the electrostatic scattering regime, which is only applicable to sub-wavelength sized particles. In this regime it was found that metallic nano-spheroids can produce absorption enhancements of about two orders of magnitude on the material in their vicinity, due to their strong plasmonic resonance. The frequency of such resonance can be tuned with the shape of the particles, allowing us to match it with the optimal transition energies of the intermediate band material. Since these metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) are to be inserted inside the cell photovoltaic medium, they should be coated by a thin insulating layer to prevent electron-hole recombination at their surface. This analysis is then generalized, using an analytical separation-of-variables method implemented in Mathematica7.0, to compute scattering by spheroids of any size and material. This code allowed the study of the scattering properties of wavelengthsized particles (mesoscopic regime), and it was verified that in this regime dielectric spheroids perform better than metallic. The light intensity scattered from such dielectric spheroids can have more than two orders of magnitude than the incident intensity, and the focal region in front of the particle can be shaped in several ways by changing the particle geometry and/or material. Experimental work was also performed in this PhD to implement in practice the concepts studied in the analysis of sub-wavelength MNPs. A wet-coating method was developed to self-assemble regular arrays of colloidal MNPs on the surface of several materials, such as silicon wafers, amorphous silicon films, gallium arsenide and glass. A series of thermal and chemical tests have been performed showing what treatments the nanoparticles can withstand for their embedment in a photovoltaic medium. MNPs arrays are then inserted in an amorphous silicon medium to study the effect of their plasmonic near-field enhancement on the absorption spectrum of the material. The self-assembled arrays of MNPs constructed in these experiments inspired a new strategy for fabricating IBSCs using colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). Such CQDs can be deposited in self-assembled monolayers, using procedures similar to those developed for the patterning of colloidal MNPs. The use of CQDs to form the intermediate band presents several important practical and physical advantages relative to the conventional dots epitaxially grown by the Stranski-Krastanov method. Besides, this provides a fast and inexpensive method for patterning binary arrays of QDs and MNPs, envisioned in the theoretical part of this thesis, in which the MNPs act as antennas focusing the light in the QDs and therefore boosting their absorption

We report on the fabrication of aluminum gallium nitride (AlGaN) Schottky diodes for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) detection. AlGaN layers were grown on silicon wafers by molecular beam epitaxy with the conventional and inverted Schottky structure, where the undoped, active layer was grown before or after the n-doped layer, respectively. Different current mechanisms were observed in the two structures. The inverted Schottky diode was designed for the optimized backside sensitivity in the hybrid imagers. A cut-off wavelength of 280 nm was observed with three orders of magnitude intrinsic rejection ratio of the visible radiation. Furthermore, the inverted structure was characterized using a EUV source based on helium discharge and an open electrode design was used to improve the sensitivity. The characteristic He I and He II emission lines were observed at the wavelengths of 58.4 nm and 30.4 nm, respectively, proving the feasibility of using the inverted layer stack for EUV detection

Current nanometer technologies suffer within-die parameter uncertainties, varying workload conditions, aging, and temperature effects that cause a serious reduction on yield and performance. In this scenario, monitoring, calibration, and dynamic adaptation become essential, demanding systems with a collection of multi purpose monitors and exposing the need for light-weight monitoring networks. This paper presents a new monitoring network paradigm able to perform an early prioritization of the information. This is achieved by the introduction of a new hierarchy level, the threshing level. Targeting it, we propose a time-domain signaling scheme over a single-wire that minimizes the network switching activity as well as the routing requirements. To validate our approach, we make a thorough analysis of the architectural trade-offs and expose two complete monitoring systems that suppose an area improvement of 40% and a power reduction of three orders of magnitude compared to previous works.

Some floating-liquid-zone experiments performed under reduced-gravity conditions are reviewed. Several types of instabilities are discussed, together with the relevant parameters controlling them. It is shown that the bounding values of these parameters could be increased, by orders of magnitude in several instances, by selecting appropriate liquids. Two of the many problems that a Fluid-Physics Module, devised to perform experiments on floating zones in a space laboratory, would involve are discussed: namely (i) procedures for disturbing the zoneunder controlled conditions, and (ii) visualisation of the inner flow pattern. Several topics connected with the nonisothermal nature and the phase-changes of floating zones are presented. In particular, a mode of propagation through the liquid zone for disturbances which could appear in the melting solid/liquid interface is suggested. Although most research on floating liquid zones is aimed at improving the crystal-growth process, some additional applications are suggested.

We present two concurrent semantics (i.e. semantics where concurrency is explicitely represented) for CC programs with atomic tells. One is based on simple partial orders of computation steps, while the other one is based on contextual nets and it is an extensión of a previous one for eventual CC programs. Both such semantics allow us to derive concurrency, dependency, and nondeterminism information for the considered languages. We prove some properties about the relation between the two semantics, and also about the relation between them and the operational semantics. Moreover, we discuss how to use the contextual net semantics in the context of CLP programs. More precisely, by interpreting concurrency as possible parallelism, our semantics can be useful for a safe parallelization of some CLP computation steps. Dually, the dependency information may also be interpreted as necessary sequentialization, thus possibly exploiting it for the task of scheduling CC programs. Moreover, our semantics is also suitable for CC programs with a new kind of atomic tell (called locally atomic tell), which checks for consistency only the constraints it depends on. Such a tell achieves a reasonable trade-off between efficiency and atomicity, since the checked constraints can be stored in a local memory and are thus easily accessible even in a distributed implementation.

Abstract. The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824), is considered one of the most harmful pests in fruit crops. Until 2009, when malathion use was banned due to its not inclusion in the Annex I of Directive 91/414/EEC, the application of this organophosphate (OP) insecticide in Spain increased gradually due to the large economic losses caused by C. capitata. The increase in the frequency of treatments resulted in the development of resistant field populations. The study of a malathion-resistant population, collected in 2004 in Castelló (Comunidad Valenciana), allowed the identification of two resistance mechanisms: a single point mutation (G328A) in the target acetylcholinesterase (AChE), as well as a metabolic resistance mechanism, most likely carboxylesterase-mediated. Taking all the preceding into account, we studied the malathion resistance mechanisms in C. capitata. During the development of this PhD Thesis malathion use was banned by the European Union, being replaced by other insecticides, such as spinosad and lambda-cyhalotrin. Within this new working frame, the need to analyse the possible existence of cross-resistance to these insecticides and the susceptibility to spinosad in field populations was raised. This would define the baseline for future studies on resistance mechanisms. Firstly, through discriminant dose bioassays, we analysed malathion and spinosad susceptibility in twelve C. capitata populations from Andalucia, Aragon, Cataluña, C. Valenciana and the Baleares Islands. Our results suggest the presence of malathion-resistant individuals in most of the populations analysed. Regarding spinosad, we noticed a high susceptibility to this biologically derived insecticide in most of the populations, but in the one collected in Xabia (Alicante), which had a susceptibility level two times lower than the rest of populations. Through laboratory selection, we obtained two malathion-resistant strains, W-4Km and W-10Km, with resistance levels 178- and 400-fold, respectively, compared to the control susceptible C strain. Besides, a strain highly-resistant to spinosad (Xabia-W-100s), 500-times more resistant than control C strain, was selected. In order to decide the most appropriate management strategy for the pest, we studied the susceptibility to different insecticides in the malathion-resistant W-4Km strain. We detected a moderated cross-resistance to the OPs fenthion, diazinon, phosmet, trichlorphon and methylchlorpyrifos (7- to 16-fold), and to the carbamate carbaryl, the pyretroid lambda-cyhalotrin and the chemosterilizer lufenuron (4- to 6-fold). On the other hand, cross-resistance to spinosad was low (1.5-fold). It is important to note that resistance levels to all insecticides were one or two orders of magnitude less than that observed against malathion in W-4Km strain (178-fold), a fact that might be due to, at least, two possible causes: mutation AChE G328A may provide a higher insensitivity to malaoxon (the active form of malathion) than to other insecticides having AChE as target, and/or, secondly, the carboxylesterase-mediated resistance mechanism hydrolyzes malathion more efficiently than all other analysed insecticides. To investigate new resistance mechanisms in C. capitata we analysed the diversity of the cytochrome P450 enzymes, which have been associated to metabolic resistance in insects, and we developed a new method to detect single point mutations in acetylcholinesterase (Ccace2) and aliesterase (Ccae7) genes that could appear. Using degenerate primers we obtained 37 CYP genes, coding P450 enzymes, included in five families. Afterwards, in a phenobarbital-induction study, we observed that the expression of 4 out of the 6 analysed genes could be induced. On the other hand, a system was set up to amplify and to sequence from genomic DNA the exons of genes Ccace2 and Ccae7 where mutations related to insecticide resistance have been found in other species. The results obtained could facilitate the study of new resistance mechanisms in C. capitata mediated by these enzymes. A PCR-RFLP method was designed to detect the presence of the mutation AChE G328A (resistance allele Ccace2R), with no need to perform bioassays and allowing detecting resistance at low frequency. According to the analysis, the resistance allele was found in 25 out of 27 sampled locations in Spain, including the Balearic and the Canary Islands. However, this allele was not detected in other populations collected in 11 countries from 5 continents. The follow-up of the presence of the allele Ccace2R in the malathion-resistant strains during the selection process in the laboratory showed a quick decrease in homozygous individuals, for both the susceptible and the resistant alleles, favouring heterozygous. Thus, after 52 generations of selection, all the individuals analysed from W-10Km strain showed a heterozygous genotype for mutation AChE G328A, contradicting mendelian segregation as expected for a gene with two alleles. Afterwards, we were able to demonstrate that this was caused by the presence of a duplication of the gene coding acetylcholinesterase by: i) crossing heterozygous individuals from W-10Km strain with susceptible homozygous from C strain, originating a F1 population in which 100% of individuals were heterozygous; ii) evaluating the number of copies of gen Ccace2 by quantitative PCR in real time (qPCR), that happened to be twice higher in individuals from W-10Km VII strain when compared with C strain; iii) analysing the level of expression of Ccace2, twice in W- 10Km strain when compared to C strain; iv) studying the acetylcholinesterase activity, that was higher in individuals from W-10Km strain. According to these results, duplication of gen Ccace2 originates the coexistence of the susceptible and the resistant allele in the same chromosome. The two linked copies of the gene Ccace2 provoke the existence of permanent heterozygosis (Ccace2RS). This explains why the 100% of individuals from W-10Km strain showed an heterozygous restriction pattern since, in fact, they were structural homozygotes for the duplication (genotype Ccace2RS/RS). A biological cost has been detected associated to this duplication, consisting in a rise in accumulated adult mortality from the seventh day after emergence. The Ccace2RS duplication described in this study represents a new resistance mechanism to malathion in C. capitata. Finally, by the design of a double PCR-RFLP method, the presence of Ccace2RS duplication was confirmed in most of the Spanish populations. We observed that the proportion of individuals carrying the duplication oscillated between 5 and 35%, the frequency being higher in those C. capitata populations collected in the area of the Mediterranean basin. Therefore, we can conclude that malathion resistance associated to mutation AChE G328A and to Ccace2RS duplication are widely distributed in Spanish populations of C. capitata. Our results advice against the use of malathion (if it came to be newly authorized for use) or other OPs for the control of this pest. Besides, one of the malathion-resistant strains showed cross-resistance against insecticides with diverse action modes that are currently used for pest control, such as lambdacyhalotrin and lufenuron. High susceptibility to spinosad in the Spanish populations, as well as the reduced cross-resistance estimated for this insecticide suggests its adequacy for Medfly control. However, the use of a single insecticide is a risky strategy since it favours the selection of resistance. In fact, a population highly resistant to spinosad was obtained through laboratory selection. Therefore, it is advisable to implement integrated pest management (IPM) and resistance management programs for C. capitata control. Using insecticides with different modes of action and diverse control systems would contribute to the sustainability of the pest control. The resistance allele detection systems developed through this work will allow the early detection of resistance in the field, making possible the selection of the most appropriate method for pest control. Besides, the generated knowledge may also contribute to the development of new detection systems for other resistance mechanisms.

To perform Quantum Key Distribution, the mastering of the extremely weak signals carried by the quantum channel is required. Transporting these signals without disturbance is customarily done by isolating the quantum channel from any noise sources using a dedicated physical channel. However, to really profit from this technology, a full integration with conventional network technologies would be highly desirable. Trying to use single photon signals with others that carry an average power many orders of magnitude bigger while sharing as much infrastructure with a conventional network as possible brings obvious problems. The purpose of the present paper is to report our efforts in researching the limits of the integration of QKD in modern optical networks scenarios. We have built a full metropolitan area network testbed comprising a backbone and an access network. The emphasis is put in using as much as possible the same industrial grade technology that is actually used in already installed networks, in order to understand the throughput, limits and cost of deploying QKD in a real network.

A new method is presented that increases the sensitivity of ultrasound-based techniques for detection of bacteria. The technique was developed for the detection of catalase-positive microorganisms. It uses a bubble trapping medium containing hydrogen peroxide that is mixed with the sample for microbiological evaluation. The enzyme catalase is present in catalase-positive bacteria, which induces a rapid hydrolysis of hydrogen peroxide, forming bubbles which remain in the medium. This reaction results in the amplification of the mechanical changes that the microorganisms produce in the medium. The effect can be detected by means of ultrasonic wave amplitude continuous measurement since the bubbles increase the ultrasonic attenuation significantly. It is shown that microorganism concentrations of the order of 105 cells ml−1 can be detected using this method. This allows an improvement of three orders of magnitude in the ultrasonic detection threshold of microorganisms in conventional culture media, and is competitive with modern rapid microbiological methods. It can also be used for the characterization of the enzymatic activity.

ABSTRACT The Mohorovičić discontinuity, simply known as “Moho” constitutes the division between the rocky and less thick materials of the mantle and the heavier ones in the crust, assuming densities of the orders of 2.67 y 3.27 g/cm3 respectively. It is also a basic contour for every geophysical kind of studies about the terrestrial crust. The seismic and previous gravimetric observations done in the study area show that the Moho depth is of the order of 30-40 km beneath the ground and 5-15 km under the ocean basin. Besides, the different techniques show a good correlation in their results. Assuming that the Iberian Peninsula gravity field (as it happens for the 90% of the Earth) is isostatically compensated according to the variable Moho depth, supposing a constant density contrast between crust and mantle, and following the isostatic Vening Meinesz model (1931), the inverse isostatic problem can be formulated from Bouguer gravity anomaly data obtained thanks to the observed gravity at the surface of the Earth. The main difference between this model and other existing ones, such as Airy- Heiskanen’s (pure local compensation and mostly used in these kinds of works) is the approaching to a regional isostatic compensation, much more in accordance with reality. Besides, its solution is related to the global gravity field, and the current gravitational models -mostly satellite derived- should be important data sources in such solution. The aim of this thesis is to study with detail this method, developed by Helmut Moritz in 1990, which hardly ever has it put into practice. Moreover, it has never been used in Iberia. After studying its theory, development and computational aspects, we are able to get a Digital Moho Model of the Iberian Peninsula, in order to study the masses distribution beneath the Earth’s surface. With the depth Moho information obtained from alternative methods, a comparison will be done. Both methods give results with the same order of accuracy, which is not quite high (+ 5 km approximately). Nevertheless, the areas in which a higher difference is observed would mean a disturbance of the compensation, which could show an unbalanced area with possible tectonic movements or potential seismic risk. It will give us an important additive value, which could be used in, at first, non related fields, such as density discrepancies or natural disasters contingency plans.

ABSTRACT In an industrial scenario where rapid microbiological methods are becoming essential tools for quality control in the biotechnological area such as food, pharmaceutical and biochemical; the objective of the work presented in this doctoral thesis is to develop a rapid microorganism inspection technique based on ultrasounds. It is proposed that the combination of an ultrasonic measuring device with a specially designed liquid medium, able to produce and trap bubbles could constitute the basis of a sensitive and rapid detection method for microbial contaminations. The proposed technique is effective on catalase positive microorganisms. Well-known catalase induced hydrogen peroxide hydrolysis is the fundamental of the developed method. The physical consequence of the catalase induced hydrogen peroxide hydrolysis is an increasingly bubbly liquid medium. Such medium has been studied and modeled from the point of view of ultrasonic propagation. Properties deduced from enzyme kinematics analysis have been extrapolated to investigate the method as a microbial inspection technique. In this thesis, theoretical and experimental aspects of the hydrogen peroxide hydrolysis were analyzed in order to quantitatively describe and understand the catalase positive microorganism detection by means of ultrasonic measurements. More concretely, experiments performed show how the produced oxygen in form of bubbles is trapped using the new gel medium based on agar, which was specially designed for this application. Ultrasonic attenuation and backscattering is measured in this medium using a pulse-echo technique along the hydrogen peroxide hydrolysis process. Catalase enzymatic activity was detected down to 0.001 units/ml. Moreover, this study shows that by means of the proposed method, microbial detection can be achieved down to 105 cells/ml in a short time period of the order of few minutes. These results suppose a significant improvement of three orders of magnitude compared to other ultrasonic detection methods for microorganisms. In addition, the sensitivity reached is competitive with modern rapid microbiological methods such as ATP detection by bioluminescence. But above all, this work points out a way to proceed for developing new rapid microbial detection techniques based on ultrasound.

A colloidal deposition technique is presented to construct long-range ordered hybrid arrays of self-assembled quantum dots and metal nanoparticles. Quantum dots are promising for novel opto-electronic devices but, in most cases, their optical transitions of interest lack sufficient light absorption to provide a significant impact in their implementation. A potential solution is to couple the dots with localized plasmons in metal nanoparticles. The extreme confinement of light in the near-field produced by the nanoparticles can potentially boost the absorption in the quantum dots by up to two orders of magnitude. In this work, light extinction measurements are employed to probe the plasmon resonance of spherical gold nanoparticles in lead sulfide colloidal quantum dots and amorphous silicon thin-films. Mie theory computations are used to analyze the experimental results and determine the absorption enhancement that can be generated by the highly intense near-field produced in the vicinity of the gold nanoparticles at their surface plasmon resonance. The results presented here are of interest for the development of plasmon-enhanced colloidal nanostructured photovoltaic materials, such as colloidal quantum dot intermediate-band solar cells.

The potential of quasimonoenergetic ion beams for fast ignition (FI) of fusion targets is investigated. Lithium, carbon, aluminium and vanadium ions have been considered here to determine the optimal kinetic energy for each ion type. Our calculations show that the ignition energies of those beams impinging on a standard fuel configuration are similar. However, they are obtained for very different ion energies. Assuming that the ions can be focused onto 10 ?m spots, a new irradiation scheme that reduces substantially the ignition energies is proposed. The combination of using intermediate ions, such as 5.5 GeV vanadium, and the new irradiation scheme allows one to reduce the number of ions required for ignition by roughly three orders of magnitude when compared with the standard proton FI scheme.

ABSTRACT The present thesis constitutes a step forward in advancing the frontiers of knowledge of fluid flow instability from a physical point of view, as a consequence of having been successful in developing groundbreaking methodologies for the efficient and accurate computation of the leading part of the spectrum pertinent to multi-dimensional eigenvalue problems (EVP) governing instability of flows with two or three inhomogeneous spatial directions. In the context of the numerical work presented in this thesis, the discretization of the spatial operator resulting from linearization of the Navier-Stokes equations around flows with two or three inhomogeneous spatial directions by variable-high-order stable finite-difference methods has permitted a speedup of four orders of magnitude in the solution of the corresponding two- and three-dimensional EVPs. This improvement of numerical performance has been achieved thanks to the high-sparsity level offered by the high-order finite-difference schemes employed for the discretization of the operators. This permitted use of efficient sparse linear algebra techniques without sacrificing accuracy and, consequently, solutions being obtained on typical workstations, as opposed to the previously employed supercomputers. Besides solution of the two- and three-dimensional EVPs of global linear instability, this development paved the way for the extension of the (linear and nonlinear) Parabolized Stability Equations (PSE) to analyze instability of flows which depend in a strongly-coupled inhomogeneous manner on two spatial directions and weakly on the third. Precisely the extensibility of the novel PSE-3D algorithm developed in the framework of the present thesis to study nonlinear flow instability permits transition prediction in flows of industrial interest, thus extending the classic PSE concept which has been successfully employed in the same context to boundary-layer type of flows over the last three decades. Typical examples of incompressible flows, the instability of which was analyzed in the present thesis without the need to resort to the restrictive assumptions used in the past, range from isolated vortices, and systems thereof, in which axial homogeneity is relaxed to consider viscous diffusion, as well as turbulent swirling jets, the instability of which is exploited in order to improve flame-holding properties of combustors. The instability of compressible subsonic and supersonic leading edge flows has been solved, and the wake of an isolated roughness element in a supersonic and hypersonic boundary-layer has also been analyzed with respect to its instability: excellent agreement with direct numerical simulation results has been obtained in all cases. Finally, instability analysis of Mach number 7 ow around an elliptic cone modeling the HIFiRE-5 flight test vehicle has unraveled flow instabilities near the minor-axis centerline, results comparing favorably with flight test predictions.
