ABSTRACT Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death worldwide and it is expected to continue in the future, generating high costs for health care systems. Implantable cardiac devices have become one of the options for diagnosis and treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders. Clinical research with these devices has acquired great importance to fight against these diseases that affect so many people in our society. Both pharmaceutical and medical technology companies, and also investigators, are involved in an increasingly number of clinical research projects. The growth in volume and the increase in medical research complexity are contributing to raise the expenditure level associated with clinical investigation. This situation is driving health care sector companies to explore new solutions to reduce clinical trial costs. Information and Communication Technologies have facilitated clinical research, mainly in the last decade. Electronic systems and software applications have provided new possibilities in the acquisition, processing and analysis of clinical studies data. On the other hand, web technology contributed to the appearance of the first electronic data capture systems that have evolved during the last years. Nevertheless, improvement of these systems is still a key aspect for the progress of clinical research. On a different matter, the traditional way to develop clinical studies with implantable cardiac devices needed an improvement in the processing of the data stored by these devices, and also in the merging of these data with the data collected by investigators and patients. The rationale of this research is based on the need to improve the efficiency in clinical investigation with implantable cardiac devices, by means of reduction in costs and time of projects development, as well as improvement in the quality of information obtained from the studies and to obtain better performance of data through the merging of data from different sources or trials. The objective of this research project is to develop the next two models: • A model for the retrieval and processing of data for clinical studies with implantable cardiac devices, enabling structure and standardization of these procedures, in order to reduce the time of development of these tasks, to improve the quality of the results, diminish therefore costs. • A model of metric integrated in an Electronic Data Capture system (EDC) that allow to analyze the results of the research project, and particularly the EDC performance, in order to improve those systems and to reduce time and costs of the project, and to get a better quality of the collected clinical data. As a result of this work, the proposed processing model has led to a reduction of the average time for data processing by more than 90 per cent, of related costs by more than 85 per cent, and all of this, through automatic data retrieval and storage, achieving an improvement of quality of data. On the other hand, the model of metrics makes possible a detailed descriptive analysis of a set of indicators that characterize the performance of each research project, allowing inter‐studies comparison. This doctoral thesis results have demonstrated that the application of the two developed models in real clinical trials has led to an improvement in projects efficiency, reducing global costs, diminishing time in execution, and increasing quality of data collected. The main contributions to scientific knowledge of this research work are the implementation of an intelligent processing system for data stored by implantable cardiac devices, the integration in this system of a global and optimized database for all models of devices, the automatic creation of an unified repository of clinical data and data stored by medical devices, and the design of a metric to be applied and integrated in electronic data capture systems to analyze the performance results of clinical research projects.

Background: Healthy diet and regular physical activity are powerful tools in reducing diabetes and cardiometabolic risk. Various international scientific and health organizations have advocated the use of new technologies to solve these problems. The PREDIRCAM project explores the contribution that a technological system could offer for the continuous monitoring of lifestyle habits and individualized treatment of obesity as well as cardiometabolic risk prevention. Methods: PREDIRCAM is a technological platform for patients and professionals designed to improve the effectiveness of lifestyle behavior modifications through the intensive use of the latest information and communication technologies. The platform consists of a web-based application providing communication interface with monitoring devices of physiological variables, application for monitoring dietary intake, ad hoc electronic medical records, different communication channels, and an intelligent notification system. A 2-week feasibility study was conducted in 15 volunteers to assess the viability of the platform. Results: The website received 244 visits (average time/session: 17 min 45 s). A total of 435 dietary intakes were recorded (average time for each intake registration, 4 min 42 s ± 2 min 30 s), 59 exercises were recorded in 20 heart rate monitor downloads, 43 topics were discussed through a forum, and 11 of the 15 volunteers expressed a favorable opinion toward the platform. Food intake recording was reported as the most laborious task. Ten of the volunteers considered long-term use of the platform to be feasible. Conclusions: The PREDIRCAM platform is technically ready for clinical evaluation. Training is required to use the platform and, in particular, for registration of dietary food intake.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can help social enterprises and other organizations working on global sustainability issues and in the human development sector in general scale their social impact. The flexibility, dynamism, and ubiquity of ICTs make them powerful tools for improving relationships among organizations and their beneficiaries, multiplying the effects of action against many, if not all, aspects of global unsustainability, including poverty and exclusion. The scaling of social impact occurs in two different dimensions. On one hand, ICTs can increase the value proposition of a program or action (depth scaling) in different ways: providing accurate and fast needs recognition, adapting products and services, creating opportunities, building fairer markets, mobilizing actions on environmental and social issues, and creating social capital. On the other hand, ICTs can also increase the number of people reached by the organization (breadth scaling) by accessing new resources, creating synergies and networks, improving organizational efficiency, increasing its visibility, and designing new access channels to beneficiaries. This article analyzes the role of ICT in the depth and breadth scaling of social impact.

University education in Peru is based on models of teacher-centered teaching and a conception of knowledge which is closed and static and under the dominance of an information model now overwhelmed by multiple factors hastened by international change. The worlds most prestigious universities have chosen cultural diversity as a sign of quality and are hence interested in the mobility of teachers and students through exchange and cooperation with foreign educational institutions. These universities respond more effectively to pressure from the international business sector, better satisfy training demands, introduce new information and communication technologies into education and research and have improved administration and management structures. While there is progress, the university system in Peru is a planning model defined "as a discipline that seeks to respond to the needs of an organization defined by new cultural and social models" (A. Cazorla, et al 2007).This paper studies the non-Euclidean thinking of planning and development of John Friedmann (2001). Based on the four domains of social practice, it proposes a planning model for Peruvian universities that meets international requirements.

There is an increasing tendency of turning the current power grid, essentially unaware of variations in electricity demand and scattered energy sources, into something capable of bringing a degree of intelligence by using tools strongly related to information and communication technologies, thus turning into the so-called Smart Grid. In fact, it could be considered that the Smart Grid is an extensive smart system that spreads throughout any area where power is required, providing a significant optimization in energy generation, storage and consumption. However, the information that must be treated to accomplish these tasks is challenging both in terms of complexity (semantic features, distributed systems, suitable hardware) and quantity (consumption data, generation data, forecasting functionalities, service reporting), since the different energy beneficiaries are prone to be heterogeneous, as the nature of their own activities is. This paper presents a proposal on how to deal with these issues by using a semantic middleware architecture that integrates different components focused on specific tasks, and how it is used to handle information at every level and satisfy end user requests.

This paper aims to outline a theory-based Content and Language Integrated Learning course and to establish the rationale for adopting a holistic approach to the teaching of languages in tertiary education. Our work focuses on the interdependence between Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), and the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), in particular regarding the learning of English within the framework of Telecommunications Engineering. The study first analyses the diverse components of the instructional approach and the extent to which this approach interrelates with technologies within the context of what we have defined as a holistic experience, since it also aims to develop a set of generic competences or transferable skills. Second, an example of a course project framed in this holistic approach is described in order to exemplify the specific actions suggested for learner autonomy and CLIL. The approach provides both an adequate framework as well as the conditions needed to carry out a lifelong learning experience within our context, a Spanish School of Engineering. In addition to specialized language and content, the approach integrates the learning of skills and capacities required by the new plans that have been established following the Bologna Declaration in 1999.

Currently, student dropout rates are a matter of concern among universities. Many research studies, aimed at discovering the causes, have been carried out. However, few solutions, that could serve all students and related problems, have been proposed so far. One such problem is caused by the lack of the "knowledge chain educational links" that occurs when students move onto higher studies without mastering their basic studies. Most regulated studies imparted at universities are designed so that some basic subjects serve as support for other, more complicated, subjects, thus forming a complicated knowledge network. When a link in this chain fails, student frustration occurs as it prevents him from fully understanding the following educational links. In this proposal we try to mitigate these disasters that stem, for the most part, the student?s frustration beyond his college stay. On one hand, we make a dissertation on the student?s learning process, which we divide into a series of phases that amount to what we call the "learning lifecycle." Also, we analyze at what stage the action by the stakeholders involved in this scenario: teachers and students; is most important. On the other hand, we consider that Information and Communication Technologies ICT, such as Cloud Computing, can help develop new ways, allowing for the teaching of higher education, while easing and facilitating the student?s learning process. But, methods and processes need to be defined as to direct the use of such technologies; in the teaching process in general, and within higher education in particular; in order to achieve optimum results. Our methodology integrates, as another actor, the ICT into the "Learning Lifecycle". We stimulate students to stop being merely spectators of their own education, and encourage them to take an active part in their training process. To do this, we offer a set of useful tools to determine not only academic failure causes, (for self assessment), but also to remedy these failures (with corrective actions); "discovered the causes it is easier to determine solutions?. We believe this study will be useful for both students and teachers. Students learn from their own experience and improve their learning process, while obtaining all of the "knowledge chain educational links? required in their studies. We stand by the motto "Studying to learn instead of studying to pass". Teachers will also be benefited by detecting where and how to strengthen their teaching proposals. All of this will also result in decreasing dropout rates.

New technologies such as, the new Information and Communication Technology ICT, break new paths and redefines the way we understand business, the Cloud Computing is one of them. The on demand resource gathering and the per usage payment scheme are now commonplace, and allows companies to save on their ICT investments. Despite the importance of this issue, we still lack methodologies that help companies, to develop applications oriented for its exploitation in the Cloud. In this study we aim to fill this gap and propose a methodology for the development of ICT applications, which are directed towards a business model, and further outsourcing in the Cloud. In the former the Development of SOA applications, we take, as a baseline scenario, a business model from which to obtain a business process model. To this end, we use software engineering tools; and in the latter The Outsourcing we propose a guide that would facilitate uploading business models into the Cloud; to this end we describe a SOA governance model, which controls the SOA. Additionally we propose a Cloud government that integrates Service Level Agreements SLAs, plus SOA governance, and Cloud architecture. Finally we apply our methodology in an example illustrating our proposal. We believe that our proposal can be used as a guide/pattern for the development of business applications.

Abstract Nuclear power plants need highly specialized and trained personnel. Thus, nuclear power plant Specialized Training Sector requires the incorporation of the latest advances in training methods. A large array of face-to-face training courses exist and it has become necessary to transform said courses in order to apply them with the new information systems available. For this, multidisciplinary equipment is needed where the engineering workforce must identify educational objectives, competences and abilities, contents and quality control of the different courses. In this project, knowledge engineering techniques are employed as the methodological axis in order to transform a face-to-face training course into on-line training through the use of new information technologies. Nowadays, new information and communication technologies are in constant evolution. They have introduced themselves into our world, transforming our previous vision of them, leading to new opportunities. For this reason, the present Project seeks to unite the use of e-learning and the Business and Corporate world. The main objective is the design, in an e-learning platform, of a technical course that will train nuclear power plant control-room operators. The work carried out in this Project has been, in addition to the transformation of a face-to-face course into an online one, the obtainment of a methodology to employ in the future transformation of other courses. In order to achieve this mission, our interest must focus on the content as well as on the management of the various courses. Hence, the Project starts with basic definitions of e-learning terminology. Next, a methodology that applies knowledge management for the transformation of any face-to-face course into e-learning has been generated. Once this methodology is defined, it has been applied for the design process of the Inherent Coefficients of Reactivity course. Finally, an economic study has been developed in order to determine the viability of the Project and an economic model has been created to estimate the price of any given course

This paper introduces a road map for ICTs (Information and communication technologies) supporting planning, operation and management of energy systems in smart cities. The road map summarises different elements that form energy systems in cities and proposes research and technical development (RTD) and innovation activities for the development and innovation of ICTs for holistic design, planning and operation of energy systems. In addition, synergies with other ICT systems for smart cities are considered. There are four main target groups for the road map: 1) citizen; 2) building sector; 3) energy sector; and 4) municipality level. As an example for enabling active participation of citizens, the road map proposes how ICT can enable citizens? involvement among others into building design. The building sector roadmap proposes how ICTs can support the planning of buildings and renovations in the future, as well as how to manage building energy systems. The energy sector road map focuses on city?s energy systems and their planning and management, including e.g. demand side management, management of different district level energy systems, energy performance validation and management, energy data models, and smarter use of open energy data. Moreover, the municipality level road map proposes among others ICTs for better integration of city systems and city planning enabling maximised energy efficiency. In addition, one road map section suggests development needs related to open energy data, including among others the use of energy data and the development and harmonisation of energy data models. The road map has been assembled in the READY4SmartCities project (funded by EU 7th Framework Programme), which focuses on the energy system at the city level, consisting of centralised energy systems and connections to the national level energy grids, as well as interconnections to the neighbourhood and building level energy systems.

ABSTRACT La Vega de Aranjuez has been known for centuries for the reputation of its orchards and historic gardens and, more recently, as the pantry of Madrid. However, in the mid-twentieth century, with the transformations in agriculture, not only locally, but globally, began a process of decline that has been accentuated in recent years. Meanwhile, in 2001, Unesco declared Aranjuez Cultural Landscape, as a World Heritage Site with outstanding universal value. Part of what underpins this international recognition lies in the peculiarities of the landscape created by farming. The shift, from an eminently horticultural vocation to extensive field crops and fallow surfaces, and the loss of importance of the sector, have not gone unnoticed for local authorities and have been several attempts at recovery and revitalization of the sector in recent years. The beginning of this research came at the initiative of the municipality of Aranjuez, which in 2010 wanted to know the situation of the horticultural sector, for which he commissioned a study by the UPM-ETSIA. To know reality from an integral perspective, it was proposed to approach the analysis from the perspective of value chain. The implications of this concept, its evolution and its role as an instrument of analysis of the food chain, have been reviewed and presented in Chapter 3.2. The value chain concept refers to all the processes from the consumer, through suppliers who provide products, services and information that add value to customers (Lambert & Cooper, 2000; Chen, 2004). For the analysis of the situation of the horticultural sector in Aranjuez, which constituted the first phase of research, it proceeded in several steps: 1. Identifying the problems and demands of the actors in the chain, making transverse cuts in the market at different levels to meet the views of the chain operators (Gunasekaran & Patel , 2004; Rojas, 2009; Schiefer, 2007). Questionnaires were designed for it and went to representatives of the five links in the chain: Farmers (15), Wholesalers (11), Retailers (55), Consumers (85) and Restaurants (36), both in Aranjuez and Madrid (a total of 202). 2. SWOT analysis of each chain actor and of the whole supply chain, as a tool to identify and synthesize the problems and potential of the sector. 3. Analysis of the whole supply chain by Industrial Organization Method according to Briz et al. (2010), which allows to study aspects of the structure, conduct and performance of the chain. 4. Analysis by a Panel of Experts at Foro Agrario Foundation headquarters, where the conclusions of the analysis were presented and strategies for the revitalization of the sector were raised. The results of the analysis in this first phase of the research, presented an overview of the value chain. Some of the highlights are: - The productive sector in Aranjuez is very fragmented and usually works independently. With a wide variety of horticultural products (up to 20), fruit crops almost disappearing and little presence of organic product. Is concerned about the unstable and low prices and usually does not work with contracts. - The wholesale sector with virtually no presence in Aranjuez is represented mostly by Mercamadrid operators, who demand higher volumes and better standardization of horticultural products from Aranjuez. - The retailer sector is diversified (with representation from retailers, supermarkets and hypermarkets) and also demand higher production volumes and improved standardization. 80% know the products of Aranjuez, especially asparagus and strawberry-strawberry cited by 74% and 63% of cases respectively. - Among the consumers, 79% give importance to the origin of horticultural products and 82% know the products from Aranjuez, the most consumed asparagus and strawberries. 42% buy organic products for health, taste and absence of chemicals. - Restaurants are big consumers of vegetables, most of the products included in the analysis is offered in over 75% of cases. The most: tomato and asparagus. Strawberry (83% of cases), and asparagus (72%) followed by the artichoke (44%) are the products of Aranjuez more known in all the surveyed restaurants. 75% of the restaurants prefer fresh product against processed or frozen. Most local restaurants (92%) would be willing to include in their menu a differentiation for products of Aranjuez. However, for those restaurants from Madrid the percentage is much lower (21%). Among the conclusions of the analysis it showed that 52% of sales were realized from farmers without intermediaries and 69% of consumers expressed interest in acquiring products directly from field to table. It has been identified that the shortening of the chain is being used as a way to create value. To deepen this aspect, a second phase investigation arose. Besides studying various aspects of the short supply chains, it was also proposed to study the functional approach of horticulture as a strategy to add value. To provide consistency with the previous phase, the focus was also conducted from the perspective of the value chain, directing the query to consumers. Thus, again it was used the questionnaire as a methodological tool, and 221 consumers were asked about different aspects of the Short Suppy Chains (SSC) and Multifunctional Horticulture (MH)2, which allowed a quantitative analysis of several variables. To complete the comprehensive view of the short chain, 6 significant projects were selected as examples of different types of short supply chains in Aranjuez and Madrid, representing "SSC Promoters" and also the “Asociación de Productores de la Huerta de Aranjuez”, formally constituted in 2014, was asked representing the productive sector. The Study Case and again the questionnaire were elected as methodological tools in a qualitative analysis. The questionnaires of this second phase of research contained short supply chain issues, as a general topic (short supply chain concept, strengths and advantages they bring difficulties for its development, key factors success) and also refered to the case of Aranjuez (consumer profile, factors involved in the purchase of vegetables, use of several types of short supply chains, relation with information and communication technologies (ICTs) and organic production or the importance of trust in short supply chains). It also contemplated aspects of multifunctional horticulture, such as the valuation of different activities (agro-tourism, educational, social or therapeutic horticulture) and consumer perception about horticultural activities as a source of welfare and satisfactor of human needs. To complete the vision of these two issues, SSC and MH, experts in the field of short supply chains and professionals working in the field of social and therapeutic horticulture were asked. The qualitative information provided, complements the study offering a new perspective in the value chain analysis, such as those relating to job performance, the difficulties encountered or training existing in our country in the field of social and therapeutic horticulture. The results of this second phase of research showed that: Short supply chains involve much more than simply reducing intermediaries and cover a wide range of types. The cases studied are mostly focused on ecological product and its operation is heavily based on the use of ICTs and the trust factor. In connection with the purchase of vegetables in the field of short supply chains, product quality, speed and freshness with which comes from the field to the table and products picked at its peak maturation, are aspects highly valued by the consumer. Activities in the field of multifunctional horticulture are positively valued by consumers, the most scored: the educational garden, therapeutic garden, followed by guided tours and tastings of vegetables from Aranjuez in restaurants. Horticultural activities were highly valuated as a source of welfare and satisfaction of human needs, especially those of healthy eating and connection with nature. To complete this summary, the main conclusions of the research are presented as follows: 1. The value chain approach has been adequate to meet the complexity and operation of the horticultural sector in Aranjuez from a holistic perspective. 2. La Huerta de Aranjuez has important strengths, underpinned by the quality of its soils and fame that keep their products, but also weaknesses. This implies low volume of production, which makes difficult the link with wholesalers and large retailers. 3. The shortening of the chain by short supply chains has been identified as a way of creating value in the chain. Opportunities exist to supply consumers from Madrid by short supply chains, however, methods that require greater organization or requirements of organic production are not yet developed. 4. Organic production could be a strategy to create value but is not generally being implemented in the production chain. 5. The peculiarity of the Huerta de Aranjuez favours the implementation of the multifunctional approach as a means of economic development. The results point to a possible demand for multifunctional horticulture that include educational, therapeutic and agro-tourism activities. There is a positive perception of the potential of horticultural activities as a source of welfare and satisfaction of basic human needs. 6. The implementation of business projects in the field of social horticulture are an interesting way to create value that has been highly valued in the short supply chain. 7. The field of Multifunctional Horticulture which includes educational, social and therapeutic aspects, forms a discipline with possibilities of development, which in research are seen as limited by the lack of professionals and access to adequate training in our country. The study of Short Supply Chains and Multifunctional Horticulture as strategies to create value in the case of the Huerta de Aranjuez has an exploratory character and largely qualitative in this research. Both concepts have revealed some complexity and require greater knowledge in various aspects for successful implementation. It opens therefore a field for future research to deepen in these areas.
