Nowadays the interest in high power semiconductor devices is growing for applications such as telemetry, lidar system or free space communications. Indeed semiconductor devices can be an alternative to solid state lasers because they are more compact and less power consuming. These characteristics are very important for constrained and/or low power supply environment such as airplanes or satellites. Lots of work has been done in the 800-1200 nm range for integrated and free space Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) [1]-[3]. At 1.5 ?m, the only commercially available MOPA is from QPC [4]: the fibred output power is about 700 mW and the optical linewidth is 500 kHz. In this paper, we first report on the simulations we have done to determine the appropriate vertical structure and architecture for a good MOPA at 1.58 ?m (section II). Then we describe the fabrication of the devices (section III). Finally we report on the optical and electrical measurements we have done for various devices (section IV).

In this paper, we report on the progresses of the BRITESPACE Consortium in order to achieve space-borne LIDAR measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration based on an all semiconductor laser source at 1.57 ?m. The complete design of the proposed RM-CW IPDA LIDAR has been presented and described in detail. Complete descriptions of the laser module and the FSU have been presented. Two bended MOPAs, emitting at the sounding frequency of the on- and off- IPDA channels, have been proposed as the transmitter optical sources with the required high brightness. Experimental results on the bended MOPAs have been presented showing a high spectral purity and promising expectations on the high output power requirements. Finally, the RM-CW approach has been modelled and an estimation of the expected SNR for the entire system is presented. Preliminary results indicate that a CO2 retrieval precision of 1.5 ppm could be achieved with an average output power of 2 W for each channel.

ABSTRACT A methodology has been proposed for the evaluation of projects to implement energy crops; this includes a number of factors of interest in a decision model based on a multi-criteria approach. This model is to evaluate both the most suitable territories for introducing an energy crop, as the most appropriate species to the conditions presented by the place chosen For this study has made a preliminary selection of four species, with characteristics of growth and production, what making them suitable for use in a project of this type. The four species selected were poplar, willow, eucalyptus and paulownia. The proposed methodology consists first in an ecological study in the context of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, in order to identify those best regions for each of the four species studied. In this process has selected a series of climatic factors, which will be defined from the ecological conditions of these species. Then we have proposed a multi-criteria model based on known techniques and simple application where are integrated environmental, economic and social aspects, which will complement the ecological information previous. This model includes the technique proposed by Dr. Saaty in 1980, the weighting by pairs of factors or criteria selected. Then, after valuation, the weighted linear sum as final decision technique is used. After defining the model has been applied to a particular region, the agrarian region of Navalmoral de la Mata. From the information collected concerning to the criteria previously selected in the model, we proceeded to value each. With these values and assigned weights, the model has been applied to finally get the territories and forest species with greater aptitude for the development of a project to implement energy crops.

ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis presents the development, verification and application of an original downscaling method for daily temperature and precipitation, which combines two statistical approaches. The first step is an analogue approach: the “n” days most similar to the day to be downscaled are selected. In the second step, a multiple regression analysis using the “n” most analogous days is performed for temperature, whereas for precipitation the probability distribution of the “n” analogous days is used to obtain the amount of precipitation. Verification of this method has been carried out for the Spanish Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Results show good performance for temperature (BIAS close to 0.1ºC and Mean Absolute Errors around 1.9ºC); and an acceptable skill for precipitation (reasonably low BIAS with a mean of - 18%, Mean Absolute Error lower than for a reference simulation, i.e. persistence, and a well-simulated probability distribution according to two non-parametric tests of similarity). To show the applicability of the method, a study case has been analyzed. The method was applied to four climate models under different future emission scenarios for the region of Aragón, thus producing future projections of daily precipitation and maximum and minimum temperatures. The reliability of the downscaling technique was re-assessed for the study case by a verification process. To determine the ability of the climate models to simulate the real climate, their simulations of the past (the 20C3M output) were downscaled and then compared with the observed climate – the results are quite robust for temperature and less conclusive for the precipitation. The downscaled future projections exhibit a significant increase during the entire 21st century of the maximum and minimum temperatures for all the considered future emission scenarios. Precipitation simulations exhibit greater uncertainties. Furthermore, the practical applicability of the method was demonstrated also by using it to produce future climate scenarios for some other study cases in different sectors and regions of the world. Special attention was paid to an application of the method in Central America, a region that is already suffering from significant climate change impacts and that has a very different climate from others where the method was previously applied.

As a result of the variscan collision, several allochtonous complexes were emplaced on the Iberian margin in Devonian times, among them the Cabo Ortegal Complex comprising the Moeche ophiolitic sequence. Copper has been won from several mines (Piquitos I & II, Barqueira, Maruxa) from disseminated ores and thin massive sulphide layers in the Moeche Unit, a strongly deformed meta-volcanic sequence comprising mainly quartz-chlorite schists and mylonites, which defines the top of the ophiolite. The ores were metamorphosed and strongly deformed under brittle conditions (for pyrite), but their textures are often apparently post-deformational, due to very common solution-transfer processes; they are composed mostly of pyrite and chalcopyrite, with minor sphalerite, pyrrhotite, etc., and with traces of native gold and PGE. The geology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of the orebodies relate closely to VMS of the Cu-Zn (Cyprus) type. Fluid inclusion studies allowed an estimation of metamorphic conditions at pressures of 2/2’5 kb and T 325/350ºC. New determinations using the chlorite geothermometer yield temperatures around 320 ºC, corresponding to pressures near 2 kb according to the isochores deduced from the fluid inclusion study, although in the Barqueira mine higher temperatures, up to 350 ºC, are found, corresponding to presssures up to 2’5 kb. Pb isotopic compositions of pyrite point to a double source of Pb, i.e. a main mantle and a subordinate crustal source. The values for 87SR/86Sr in pyrite support this interpretation, but some results suggest later mobilization in an open system, corresponding to solution-transfer. Age determinations of pyrite deduced from the Pb isotope uranogenic graph, ≈ 480 Ma, do not fit with the metamorphic ages published for the Moeche Unit, and might point to the age of Pb extraction from the mantle.

The accuracy of Tomás López´s historical cartography of the Canary Islands included in the “Atlas Particular” of the Kingdoms of Spain, Portugal and Adjacent Islands” is analyzed. For this purpose, we propose a methodology based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a comparison of digitized historical cartography population centres with current ones. This study shows that the lineal error value is small for the smaller islands: Lanzarote, El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera. In the large islands of Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, the error is smaller in central zones but increases towards the coast. This indicates that Tomás López began his cartography starting from central island zones, accumulating errors due to lack of geodetic references as he moved toward the coast.

Abstract. The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824), is considered one of the most harmful pests in fruit crops. Until 2009, when malathion use was banned due to its not inclusion in the Annex I of Directive 91/414/EEC, the application of this organophosphate (OP) insecticide in Spain increased gradually due to the large economic losses caused by C. capitata. The increase in the frequency of treatments resulted in the development of resistant field populations. The study of a malathion-resistant population, collected in 2004 in Castelló (Comunidad Valenciana), allowed the identification of two resistance mechanisms: a single point mutation (G328A) in the target acetylcholinesterase (AChE), as well as a metabolic resistance mechanism, most likely carboxylesterase-mediated. Taking all the preceding into account, we studied the malathion resistance mechanisms in C. capitata. During the development of this PhD Thesis malathion use was banned by the European Union, being replaced by other insecticides, such as spinosad and lambda-cyhalotrin. Within this new working frame, the need to analyse the possible existence of cross-resistance to these insecticides and the susceptibility to spinosad in field populations was raised. This would define the baseline for future studies on resistance mechanisms. Firstly, through discriminant dose bioassays, we analysed malathion and spinosad susceptibility in twelve C. capitata populations from Andalucia, Aragon, Cataluña, C. Valenciana and the Baleares Islands. Our results suggest the presence of malathion-resistant individuals in most of the populations analysed. Regarding spinosad, we noticed a high susceptibility to this biologically derived insecticide in most of the populations, but in the one collected in Xabia (Alicante), which had a susceptibility level two times lower than the rest of populations. Through laboratory selection, we obtained two malathion-resistant strains, W-4Km and W-10Km, with resistance levels 178- and 400-fold, respectively, compared to the control susceptible C strain. Besides, a strain highly-resistant to spinosad (Xabia-W-100s), 500-times more resistant than control C strain, was selected. In order to decide the most appropriate management strategy for the pest, we studied the susceptibility to different insecticides in the malathion-resistant W-4Km strain. We detected a moderated cross-resistance to the OPs fenthion, diazinon, phosmet, trichlorphon and methylchlorpyrifos (7- to 16-fold), and to the carbamate carbaryl, the pyretroid lambda-cyhalotrin and the chemosterilizer lufenuron (4- to 6-fold). On the other hand, cross-resistance to spinosad was low (1.5-fold). It is important to note that resistance levels to all insecticides were one or two orders of magnitude less than that observed against malathion in W-4Km strain (178-fold), a fact that might be due to, at least, two possible causes: mutation AChE G328A may provide a higher insensitivity to malaoxon (the active form of malathion) than to other insecticides having AChE as target, and/or, secondly, the carboxylesterase-mediated resistance mechanism hydrolyzes malathion more efficiently than all other analysed insecticides. To investigate new resistance mechanisms in C. capitata we analysed the diversity of the cytochrome P450 enzymes, which have been associated to metabolic resistance in insects, and we developed a new method to detect single point mutations in acetylcholinesterase (Ccace2) and aliesterase (Ccae7) genes that could appear. Using degenerate primers we obtained 37 CYP genes, coding P450 enzymes, included in five families. Afterwards, in a phenobarbital-induction study, we observed that the expression of 4 out of the 6 analysed genes could be induced. On the other hand, a system was set up to amplify and to sequence from genomic DNA the exons of genes Ccace2 and Ccae7 where mutations related to insecticide resistance have been found in other species. The results obtained could facilitate the study of new resistance mechanisms in C. capitata mediated by these enzymes. A PCR-RFLP method was designed to detect the presence of the mutation AChE G328A (resistance allele Ccace2R), with no need to perform bioassays and allowing detecting resistance at low frequency. According to the analysis, the resistance allele was found in 25 out of 27 sampled locations in Spain, including the Balearic and the Canary Islands. However, this allele was not detected in other populations collected in 11 countries from 5 continents. The follow-up of the presence of the allele Ccace2R in the malathion-resistant strains during the selection process in the laboratory showed a quick decrease in homozygous individuals, for both the susceptible and the resistant alleles, favouring heterozygous. Thus, after 52 generations of selection, all the individuals analysed from W-10Km strain showed a heterozygous genotype for mutation AChE G328A, contradicting mendelian segregation as expected for a gene with two alleles. Afterwards, we were able to demonstrate that this was caused by the presence of a duplication of the gene coding acetylcholinesterase by: i) crossing heterozygous individuals from W-10Km strain with susceptible homozygous from C strain, originating a F1 population in which 100% of individuals were heterozygous; ii) evaluating the number of copies of gen Ccace2 by quantitative PCR in real time (qPCR), that happened to be twice higher in individuals from W-10Km VII strain when compared with C strain; iii) analysing the level of expression of Ccace2, twice in W- 10Km strain when compared to C strain; iv) studying the acetylcholinesterase activity, that was higher in individuals from W-10Km strain. According to these results, duplication of gen Ccace2 originates the coexistence of the susceptible and the resistant allele in the same chromosome. The two linked copies of the gene Ccace2 provoke the existence of permanent heterozygosis (Ccace2RS). This explains why the 100% of individuals from W-10Km strain showed an heterozygous restriction pattern since, in fact, they were structural homozygotes for the duplication (genotype Ccace2RS/RS). A biological cost has been detected associated to this duplication, consisting in a rise in accumulated adult mortality from the seventh day after emergence. The Ccace2RS duplication described in this study represents a new resistance mechanism to malathion in C. capitata. Finally, by the design of a double PCR-RFLP method, the presence of Ccace2RS duplication was confirmed in most of the Spanish populations. We observed that the proportion of individuals carrying the duplication oscillated between 5 and 35%, the frequency being higher in those C. capitata populations collected in the area of the Mediterranean basin. Therefore, we can conclude that malathion resistance associated to mutation AChE G328A and to Ccace2RS duplication are widely distributed in Spanish populations of C. capitata. Our results advice against the use of malathion (if it came to be newly authorized for use) or other OPs for the control of this pest. Besides, one of the malathion-resistant strains showed cross-resistance against insecticides with diverse action modes that are currently used for pest control, such as lambdacyhalotrin and lufenuron. High susceptibility to spinosad in the Spanish populations, as well as the reduced cross-resistance estimated for this insecticide suggests its adequacy for Medfly control. However, the use of a single insecticide is a risky strategy since it favours the selection of resistance. In fact, a population highly resistant to spinosad was obtained through laboratory selection. Therefore, it is advisable to implement integrated pest management (IPM) and resistance management programs for C. capitata control. Using insecticides with different modes of action and diverse control systems would contribute to the sustainability of the pest control. The resistance allele detection systems developed through this work will allow the early detection of resistance in the field, making possible the selection of the most appropriate method for pest control. Besides, the generated knowledge may also contribute to the development of new detection systems for other resistance mechanisms.

Brachypodium distachyon (2n = 2x = 10) is a small annual grass species where the existence of three different cytotypes (10, 20 and 30 chromosomes) has long been regarded as a case of autopolyploid series, with x = 5. However, it has been demonstrated that the cytotypes assumed to be polyploids represent two separate Brachypodium species recently named as B. stacei (2n = 2x = 20) and B. hybridum (2n = 4x = 30). The aim of this study was to find a PCR-based alternative approach that could replace standard cytotyping methods (i. e., chromosome counting and flow cytometry) to characterize each of the three Brachypodium species. We have analyzed with four microsatellite (SSR) markers eighty-three Brachypodium distachyon-type lines from varied locations in Spain, including the Balearic and Canary Islands. Within this set of lines, 64, 4 and 15 had 10, 20 and 30 chromosomes, respectively. The surveyed markers produced cytotype-specific SSR profiles. So, a single amplification product was generated in the diploid samples, with non-overlapping allelic ranges between the 2n = 10 and 2n = 20 cytotypes, whereas two bands, one in the size range of each of the diploid cytotypes, were amplified in the 2n = 30 lines. Furthermore, the remarkable size difference obtained with the SSR ALB165 allowed the identification of the Brachypodium species by simple agarose gel electrophoresis.

Massive integration of renewable energy sources in electrical power systems of remote islands is a subject of current interest. The increasing cost of fossil fuels, transport costs to isolated sites and environmental concerns constitute a serious drawback to the use of conventional fossil fuel plants. In a weak electrical grid, as it is typical on an island, if a large amount of conventional generation is substituted by renewable energy sources, power system safety and stability can be compromised, in the case of large grid disturbances. In this work, a model for transient stability analysis of an isolated electrical grid exclusively fed from a combination of renewable energy sources has been studied. This new generation model will be installed in El Hierro Island, in Spain. Additionally, an operation strategy to coordinate the generation units (wind, hydro) is also established. Attention is given to the assessment of inertial energy and reactive current to guarantee power system stability against large disturbances. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is shown by means of simulation results.

In Spain, natural zeolites have been only found in the volcanic areas of Canary Islands (San Gil, M.M., 1959). However, several years ago the study of the South Eastern region of continental Spain (Cabo de Gata) revealed the presence of a deposit of mordenite being industrially commercialized as bentonite. The deposit San José-Los Escullos is located in the concession registered as Los Murcianos, managed by Bentonitas Especiales, S.A. (BENESA) who was extracting bentonite while ignoring the presence of the zeolite. The name San José-Los Escullos refers to the discovery of mordenite in this deposit. The deposit is located in a volcanic area, constituted by pyroxenic andesites, breccias, tuffs, pyroclasts with andesitic and dacitic composition, largely altered by the hydrothermal solutions. The recent discovery of this zeolite with mordenite content up to 97%, has changed the initial vision about that deposit, and new possible uses of this mineral in the pozzolanic cement industry are foreseen. This work intends to give preliminary data on the characterization of this zeolite according to X-ray diffraction (XRD), ICP analyses, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as to emphasize the pozzolanic properties of this material, using both chemical and mechanical tests.

The Canary Islands are mostly characterized by diffuse and scattered volcanism affecting a large area, with only one active stratovolcano, the Teide?Pico Viejo complex (Tenerife). More than 2 million people live and work in the 7,447 km2 of the archipelago, resulting in an average population density three times greater than the rest of Spain. This fact, together with the growth of exposure during the past 40 years, increases volcanic risk with respect previous eruptions, as witnessed during the recent 2011?2012 El Hierro submarine eruption. Therefore, in addition to purely scientific reasons there are economic and population-security reasons for developing and maintaining an efficient volcano monitoring system. In this scenario geodetic monitoring represents an important part of the monitoring system. We describe volcano geodetic monitoring research carried out in the Canary Islands and the results obtained. We consider for each epoch the two main existing constraints: the level of volcanic activity in the archipelago, and the limitations of the techniques available at the time. Theoretical and observational aspects are considered, as well as the implications for operational volcano surveillance. Current challenges of and future perspectives in geodetic volcano monitoring in the Canaries are also presented.
