The solaR package allows for reproducible research both for photovoltaics (PV) systems performance and solar radiation. It includes a set of classes, methods and functions to calculate the sun geometry and the solar radiation incident on a photovoltaic generator and to simulate the performance of several applications of the photovoltaic energy. This package performs the whole calculation procedure from both daily and intradaily global horizontal irradiation to the final productivity of grid-connected PV systems and water pumping PV systems. It is designed using a set of S4 classes whose core is a group of slots with multivariate time series. The classes share a variety of methods to access the information and several visualization methods. In addition, the package provides a tool for the visual statistical analysis of the performance of a large PV plant composed of several systems. Although solaR is primarily designed for time series associated to a location defined by its latitude/longitude values and the temperature and irradiation conditions, it can be easily combined with spatial packages for space-time analysis.

In recent years, remote sensing imaging systems for the measurement of oceanic sea states have attracted renovated attention. Imaging technology is economical, non-invasive and enables a better understanding of the space-time dynamics of ocean waves over an area rather than at selected point locations of previous monitoring methods (buoys, wave gauges, etc.). We present recent progress in space-time measurement of ocean waves using stereo vision systems on offshore platforms, which focus on sea states with wavelengths in the range of 0.01 m to 10 m. Classical epipolar techniques and modern variational methods are reviewed to reconstruct the sea surface from the stereo pairs sequentially in time. The statistical and spectral properties of the resulting observed waves are analyzed. Current improvements of the variational methods are discussed as future lines of research.

We present recent progress in space-time measurement of ocean waves using stereo vision systems on offshore platforms, which focus on sea states with wavelengths in the range of 0.01 m to 1 m. Both traditional disparity-based systems and modern elevation-based ones are presented in a variational optimization framework: the main idea is to pose the stereoscopic reconstruction problem of the surface of the ocean in a variational setting and design an energy functional whose minimizer is the desired temporal sequence of wave heights. The functional combines photometric observations as well as spatial and temporal smoothness priors. Disparity methods estimate the disparity between images as an intermediate step toward retrieving the depth of the waves with respect to the cameras, whereas elevation methods estimate the ocean surface displacements directly in 3-D space. Both techniques are used to measure ocean waves from real data collected at offshore platforms in the Black Sea (Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine) and the Northern Adriatic Sea (Venice coast, Italy). Then, the statistical and spectral properties of the resulting observed waves are analyzed. We show the advantages and disadvantages of the presented stereo vision systems and discuss future lines of research to improve their performance in critical issues such as the robustness of the camera calibration in spite of undesired variations of the camera parameters or the processing time that it takes to retrieve ocean wave measurements from the stereo videos, which are very large datasets that need to be processed efficiently to be of practical usage. Multiresolution and short-time approaches would improve efficiency and scalability of the techniques so that wave displacements are obtained in feasible times.

Stereo video techniques are effective for estimating the space-time wave dynamics over an area of the ocean. Indeed, a stereo camera view allows retrieval of both spatial and temporal data whose statistical content is richer than that of time series data retrieved from point wave probes. To prove this, we consider an application of the Wave Acquisition Stereo System (WASS) for the analysis of offshore video measurements of gravity waves in the Northern Adriatic Sea. In particular, we deployed WASS at the oceanographic platform Acqua Alta, off the Venice coast, Italy. Three experimental studies were performed, and the overlapping field of view of the acquired stereo images covered an area of approximately 1100 m2. Analysis of the WASS measurements show that the sea surface can be accurately estimated in space and time together, yielding associated directional spectra and wave statistics that agree well with theoretical models. From the observed wavenumber-frequency spectrum one can also predict the vertical profile of the current flow underneath the wave surface. Finally, future improvements of WASS and applications are discussed.

Validating modern oceanographic theories using models produced through stereo computer vision principles has recently emerged. Space-time (4-D) models of the ocean surface may be generated by stacking a series of 3-D reconstructions independently generated for each time instant or, in a more robust manner, by simultaneously processing several snapshots coherently in a true ?4-D reconstruction.? However, the accuracy of these computer-vision-generated models is subject to the estimations of camera parameters, which may be corrupted under the influence of natural factors such as wind and vibrations. Therefore, removing the unpredictable errors of the camera parameters is necessary for an accurate reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that can jointly perform a 4-D reconstruction as well as correct the camera parameter errors introduced by external factors. The technique is founded upon variational optimization methods to benefit from their numerous advantages: continuity of the estimated surface in space and time, robustness, and accuracy. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested using synthetic data produced through computer graphics techniques, based on which the errors of the camera parameters arising from natural factors can be simulated.

This paper presents a Finite Element Model, which has been used for forecasting the diffusion of innovations in time and space. Unlike conventional models used in diffusion literature, the model considers the spatial heterogeneity. The implementation steps of the model are explained by applying it to the case of diffusion of photovoltaic systems in a local region in southern Germany. The applied model is based on a parabolic partial differential equation that describes the diffusion ratio of photovoltaic systems in a given region over time. The results of the application show that the Finite Element Model constitutes a powerful tool to better understand the diffusion of an innovation as a simultaneous space-time process. For future research, model limitations and possible extensions are also discussed.

ABSTRACT Generally speaking the so-called creative processes, and particularly those of the architectural design, keep approaches into the object oriented mainly in the process, so to speak, into the strategical, the methodological and/ or into the paradigmatic. In addition, they don’t usually take into account the potential of information neither in a complete manner nor even contemplated or, if considered, worked out unconsciously, or referred back to the procedural. Similarly, the interest of these approaches is focused either in the proposed object or the output, or in the processual, but leaving their constituent out, being it the information itself. Therefore, as physics is claiming nowadays, the constituent core of these approaches have neither been taken into account so far, nor tried to systematize. Along with this omission, these approaches do not allow each human being to set up autonomously, independently and entirely her/ his own process, because the mentioned procedures are supported by contextual, cultural and/ or procedural frameworks, reflecting then a perspective limited in space-time. Thus a potency is proposed, or "those qualities possessed by things under which they are totally impassive or immutable, or are not easily changed...", as defined by Aristotle in "Metaphysics", as the possibility to, and at the same time, alluding to a full informational range and point out to a whole development of an own personal process. From the informational stand, which in turn is energetic depending on the scientific discipline considered, it is distinguished, in the first place, a minimum set of attributes or terms, which are potencies that summarize the full informational range. That is, they are maximum minimums. These attributes build up the qualitative phase of the information being called accompaniment. Secondly, and supported in the brain functioning, in quantum space-time, as in new experiments and research carried out by biology, physics and neuroscience especially, new lines to access information are being opened, being contemplated linearly, locally and as a detached entity before. Thus, this second approach comes up with a potency of data`s intensifying that allows an increase in the brain thereof and, therefore, the possibility of avoiding the problem of "the blank paper". Promotion is how this phase is appointed. In the third place, both phases form the generation as the dissertation proposal, being it a change of any kind in which someone is the agent of something, specifically, when a human being is the mediator in between events. Fusing both of them, a global potential formation-with is added simultaneously, which is synergistically greater than the sum of the previous two. In this grouping way, and now in order to materialize and systemize this generation or potency, an implementation is displayed. To this end, an analytical-geometrical-parametrical model is developed and put into practice as a case study. In addition, this model features a self-referral or holographic functioning, being aligned to both scientific reviewed studies, and the very functioning either of the attributes and/ or all the potencies that are introduced in this research.

ABSTRACT We label to reduce our uncertainty; we classify based on opposites to understand. The universe and all constructed space in particular, are explained from a dual architecture: inside - out, up - down, right - left, day - night, male - female, black - white. What differentiate us as a group, race, gender, distinguishing the lifestyles, ideologies and theories, is how we draw the relation between the opposites: between the individual and the collective, private and public, imagination and reality , identity and otherness, order and disorder, desire and satiety. The dichotomous classification of reality that modernity carried to its extreme, hurts life: the mutual exclusion of opposites eliminates the distance, the space-time between the two, which is where life is located. The dual conception that governs our knowledge has also contaminated the relationship between architect and society, being the cause of the toxic environment that surrounds the inhabitant who no longer identify himself with the places he inhabit. It may be appropriate pass from binary thinking to a logic of the interstitial which abandon duality to settle in Between; architect then will be the mediator between authorities and life, sensing the Between as a flowing of life a potency of interaction rather than a separation between the extremes; ambiguous, in –between, places are where the encounter between opposites happens, between the architect and the inhabitant, between imagination and reality, between you and me.

ABSTRACT The reality is being questioned, even going so far as to doubt its existence; real space is also questioned, but the human being experiences the natural and artificial spaces; and amongst the latter the architectural, within which includes the performance one, related to the show. This performance space has been transformed according to the shows that have been happening in history and will continue modifying. Nowadays, it coincides with environments not previously employed for the show, because it can occur anywhere. The scenographic space, which belongs to the performance, is projected and built with the rules of the scenography. It has been completed in different ways depending on the type of show and is related to the architectural space thanks to movement, because both be travelled through, physically or through the mediation of the creators of the shows; implying a classification of the scenographic space, according to this movement. A typology which refers to each kinetic scenographic space based on classifications established by categories is essential to analyze deeply and lay the foundations to study this space. Instruments are necessary in order to project and build the scenographic space. Some coincide with the architectural ones, but are generally different and specific according to different performances. The instruments are described and catalogued to be able to know how to use them and to devise those spaces. Architectural and performance spaces are created by the project and have different characteristics according to each discipline. The main objective of the scenographic space project is to serve fiction and generally modify and improve the performance, which also happens today with the architectural space. The construction of architectural space nowadays employs techniques and materials with which the scenographic space is also constructed. The kinetic scenographic space can also be built with its own techniques that are defined and classified, including new compositions of digital images. Two types of spaces emerge depending on where they are built and the role played by this construction in fiction, which are also discussed and defined. The purpose of scenography and architecture is the creation of spaces that have common characteristics. The scenographic space also has specific characteristics which don’t exist in the architectural one. Also the typologies, the instruments, the project and the construction differ between the two spaces. Reality has become performance, the performance is projected and is built with the laws and rules of scenography, and then architecture must know these laws and rules, because they serve to construct reality.

ABSTRACT This PhD thesis is based on the research of "architectural stratum" using concepts, logical and synopsis as organizational, linked and overlapping points, which give way to a proactive framework that can be articulated and independent simultaneously. A situation that, faced with new challenges, aims to go beyond a strict definition of stratum or their preconceived notion described from the superposition of different materials. All this in order to reveal the different profiles of stratum and stratification. To do this, it opens and widens the field of project/process study, blurring the boundaries between disciplines –geology, philosophy, technology, architecture–. And, at the same time, a cartography of the architectural stratum is constructed, that associates with: descriptor taxonomy, new formulations, thoughts of recognizable and/or rescued characters, –as Rowe/Slutzky, Smithson, Parent/Virilio, Koolhaas, MVRDV, etc.–, and finally, a new project and operational logics referred to stratum, which merge complex knowledge. A content not usually presented in traditional doctoral research –which can face new methodological changes, and creates a starting point for future research or other possible emerging paths–. Thus, the work is imbued with new theoretical framework within a common mythology (stratum’s myth). An issue addressed with hybrid keys, that is, with selective studies and collected writings –analyzed starting from found and consolidated backgrounds–, combined with underlying performances on contemporary architecture –which can still be in experimental phase–. A research that shows adaptation, evolution and change of the definition of "architectural stratum", as well as their appearance, use and application throughout time, result of the new requirements and/or the new ideological foundations caused by new discoveries. Architectural strata that give depth to space –from two-dimensionality– by overlapping parallel planes towards the construction of a new experience of phenomenological stratification. Strata that generate stimuli and change their materiality –from opaque to lattice– creating appearances and producing various effects, for later exfoliating and becoming habitable strata. Strata that capture space-time or internal dynamics. Even reaching, with a final twist, the digital age, where the informational stratum –which remains independent, autonomous and diverse, and can be modified, manipulated, deleted or activated without altering the whole–, contribute to obtaining flexible, relational systems, able to mutate or adapt, associated with different levels of regulatory organization, that drive actions and make emerge project logics. Strata that arise elaborately or spontaneously in urban or natural territory (city upon city, floor upon floor), which apply expanding and hybridizing the territory (operational landscapes), which are artificially restated as building mechanisms according to existing requirements (strata program, specialized layers), which are implemented as layers in the software used as design tools (multilayer, systems of informational interchange). A work that is structured in a multi-layered way, which allows explore the thesis as a sequence map, jump between layers of information, or select readings according to an interest in thought or architectural action. Therefore, an investigation into the "architectural stratum" that connects different disciplines, which collects different theoretical/practical positions –which implies the introduction of live parameters and data– and faces a strategic positioning returning to value the architectural stratum –based on formal strategies that have become experimental/operational strategies (as the environment has become more complex), following a conceptual, intellectual, contemporary, own specific strategy–.

ABSTRACT The photographic image is a frozen space time block, a fragment referred to a something before and after. When we stare at the photography of domestic interiors we discover a subtle interweaving between the inhabitant and her habitat. We are able to acknowledge infinite more details than the human eye, in its continuous quotidian vision always linked to the space time progression, appreciates. The act of photographing the home, of freezing infinitesimal inhabited units, reveals as a radical statement of the concept of inhabiting for each photographer, professional or amateur, and by extension, as we today all are photographers, for each inhabitant. On the one hand, photography is here conceived as a tool that is capable of revealing, "of placing in the world" the elements, perceptions and happenings that underlie imbricated in the construction of a home. On the other hand, image is thought as an expression and communication media, as the universal language of our time (as far as it is known and used by all of us). In this precise moment of maximum interconnection between networks, data and cognitive layers; of speed and acceleration, this PhD Dissertation is conceived as a return to reflection; to the contemplation of object image, from the certainty of its need of time for talking. Therefore, this research from an ontological and phenomenological base; from the experience of the self who inhabits a determined and concrete environment, that of the western countries at the present, pursues to unveil the meaning and way of inhabiting of a common dweller and manifest what conforms the transformation of any house, of any inhabitant into a home. The first clues will arise from the analysis and hermeneutical reinterpretation of the Atlas of inhabiting; an assembled body of images of anonymous inhabitants houses, brought into life through a group of artist´s glance. Afterwards, we will test the analysis´s acquired knowledge, while extending the investigation to the feel of the common inhabitant (and no longer the expert^ artist) through the execution of three participative experiments conceived as qualitative field works. The results of both case study groups, will be compiled, organized and structured in a taxonomy of the inhabiting. This taxonomy is composed by forty seven parameters that explicitly state the complex nature of the XXI century home, regarded as a personal construct of every single inhabitant, as a process that happens through time and space and that entails the construction of the inhabitant. This wide taxonomy is organized regarding three spheres of the human being, In first place, those elements related to the way of “physically being” at home are expressed, including: the inhabitant its self, the house as architectural space and as materiality: objects, furniture, icons and symbols that fill the home. In second place, parameters related to the way of “perceiving“ are manifested; on the one hand, those that derive from what we see; on the other hand, those that derive from what we do not see, but feel. In third place, those factors deriving from the inhabitant as a home "creator/player" who is acting in the world and feeling the world while constructing it through a myriad of relationships he establishes with it. Finally, the investigation tries to reveal the synergies, connections and relations between all these elements extracted from the feelings of the common inhabitant, induced through the analysis and reinterpretation of the case studies, and therefore exposing a state of things belonging to western world at present.

ABSTRACT "Imposing buildings are not necessary for children to receive a good education, even less in mild climate areas. In the past, Philosophers and Saints used to sit with their disciples in the shade of a tree, passing on their wisdom without the need of reinforced concrete buildings. But they were great men and great minds who could take advantage of the entire universe as a source of teaching material, together with their intelligence and fantasy." This thesis was undertaken with the purpose of carrying out an in depth analysis of the architectural strategies targeting certain types of schools which have a close relationship between architecture and nature. It is said that since the time of Lao Tzu his definition of architecture had not been surpassed: “architecture is not just four walls and a roof, architecture is the arrangement of the spaces and the spirit that is generated within”. But this definition suffered from a serious lack as the “space left outside” is not mentioned. This was exposed by Rafael de La Hoz Arderius in his speech of entry into the Royal Academy of San Fernando10. It was not until the early twentieth century that Western architecture would squarely focus on dematerializing the boundary between the built environment and the “site” in which it is inserted, turning it into an inhabited “place”. The “inside” and the “outside” are no longer understood as two op-posed realities, instead they make way for a continuous space articulated through fruitful in-between situations. However, little has been studied about an architectural typology: the open air school, which was a turning point in the genesis of both educational, as well as modern space. This is therefore the object of this thesis, having two perspectives. On the one hand the development of this type of school is broadly investigated; on the other hand a specific case is introduced: the school of the Teresian association of Alicante, by Rafael de La Hoz and Gerardo Olivares. The development of the open air school is approached through a selection of case studies. These illustrate that the expected social regeneration could not be limited exclusively by the hygienic aspects targeting its first stage, but it was also necessary to strengthen the community spirit of the child as a future citizen. As previously mentioned the Teresian school of Alicante (1964-1966), has been chosen as a specific case study. Despite being quite a bit less renowned than other projects by the same authors, it represents the culmination of their researches about the open air school. In line with the humanist postulates of Richard Neutra’s Biological Realism, Rafael de La Hoz warned about the inability to deal with the arrangement of space if we are unaware of the perceptive process of the human being, addressee of the architecture. This difficulty becomes greater when the addressee is not the adult human but the child, given his different perception of the binomial “space-time” relationship. In this respect the Teresian school of Alicante is in addition a closely related case study, being the only one of the mentioned cases in this thesis allowing to acquire a deep knowledge, both from the results of its analysis coming from a research of scientific nature, as well as the personal experience lived since I was a child, given that I am a former pupil. Both in this case study and in the other analyzed cases, the methodology implemented to achieve the integral education of the individual is based on the direct contact with the exterior, promoting a balanced and in harmony with nature new way of life, including oneself and the others. Thereby it replicates the Plato’s cavern myth and its roussonian review: Emilio. From the first stage in which the exterior literally substitutes the classroom as the educational space, it is evolved towards a more complex typology in which the project strategies have to promote the continuity between inside and outside learning spaces, as well as to reproduce inside the classroom the advantages of the exterior environment avoiding some of its disadvantages; thereto considering the differing matrixes involving the pupil age and the local climatology. From the analysis of the general case studies and the Teresian school, the main project strategies and elements characterizing the open air school have been synthesized.

Why should a progressive planner/urbanist pay attention to the Spanish 15M movement? From a disciplinary standpoint, its most complex and interesting aspect, which could hypothetically be transferred to other contexts (as in fact happened in the Occupy Wall Street and Occupy London movements), is its 'spatiality'. This article analyses the spatial practices of the so called #spanishrevolution, one of the 2011 social movements that showed the possibility for a new collective appropriation and self-management (autogestion) of urban public space. Although the political goals of the movement were vague at the time of its inception, the practices and spatial imaginaries deployed by it have become consolidated and proven to be yet another of its more successful facets in promoting the spreading and organisation of the protest, making it a phenomenon that calls for reflection on the part of urban thinkers and planners.

There are a number of research and development activities that are exploring Time and Space Partition (TSP) to implement safe and secure flight software. This approach allows to execute different real-time applications with different levels of criticality in the same computer board. In order to do that, flight applications must be isolated from each other in the temporal and spatial domains. This paper presents the first results of a partitioning platform based on the Open Ravenscar Kernel (ORK+) and the XtratuM hypervisor. ORK+ is a small, reliable real-time kernel supporting the Ada Ravenscar Computational model that is central to the ASSERT development process. XtratuM supports multiple virtual machines, i.e. partitions, on a single computer and is being used in the Integrated Modular Avionics for Space study. ORK+ executes in an XtratuM partition enabling Ada applications to share the computer board with other applications.

In this paper we develop new techniques for revealing geometrical structures in phase space that are valid for aperiodically time dependent dynamical systems, which we refer to as Lagrangian descriptors. These quantities are based on the integration, for a finite time, along trajectories of an intrinsic bounded, positive geometrical and/or physical property of the trajectory itself. We discuss a general methodology for constructing Lagrangian descriptors, and we discuss a “heuristic argument” that explains why this method is successful for revealing geometrical structures in the phase space of a dynamical system. We support this argument by explicit calculations on a benchmark problem having a hyperbolic fixed point with stable and unstable manifolds that are known analytically. Several other benchmark examples are considered that allow us the assess the performance of Lagrangian descriptors in revealing invariant tori and regions of shear. Throughout the paper “side-by-side” comparisons of the performance of Lagrangian descriptors with both finite time Lyapunov exponents (FTLEs) and finite time averages of certain components of the vector field (“time averages”) are carried out and discussed. In all cases Lagrangian descriptors are shown to be both more accurate and computationally efficient than these methods. We also perform computations for an explicitly three dimensional, aperiodically time-dependent vector field and an aperiodically time dependent vector field defined as a data set. Comparisons with FTLEs and time averages for these examples are also carried out, with similar conclusions as for the benchmark examples.
