Esta Tesis aborda los problemas de eficiencia de las redes eléctrica desde el punto de vista del consumo. En particular, dicha eficiencia es mejorada mediante el suavizado de la curva de consumo agregado. Este objetivo de suavizado de consumo implica dos grandes mejoras en el uso de las redes eléctricas: i) a corto plazo, un mejor uso de la infraestructura existente y ii) a largo plazo, la reducción de la infraestructura necesaria para suplir las mismas necesidades energéticas. Además, esta Tesis se enfrenta a un nuevo paradigma energético, donde la presencia de generación distribuida está muy extendida en las redes eléctricas, en particular, la generación fotovoltaica (FV). Este tipo de fuente energética afecta al funcionamiento de la red, incrementando su variabilidad. Esto implica que altas tasas de penetración de electricidad de origen fotovoltaico es perjudicial para la estabilidad de la red eléctrica. Esta Tesis trata de suavizar la curva de consumo agregado considerando esta fuente energética. Por lo tanto, no sólo se mejora la eficiencia de la red eléctrica, sino que también puede ser aumentada la penetración de electricidad de origen fotovoltaico en la red. Esta propuesta conlleva grandes beneficios en los campos económicos, social y ambiental. Las acciones que influyen en el modo en que los consumidores hacen uso de la electricidad con el objetivo producir un ahorro energético o un aumento de eficiencia son llamadas Gestión de la Demanda Eléctrica (GDE). Esta Tesis propone dos algoritmos de GDE diferentes para cumplir con el objetivo de suavizado de la curva de consumo agregado. La diferencia entre ambos algoritmos de GDE reside en el marco en el cual estos tienen lugar: el marco local y el marco de red. Dependiendo de este marco de GDE, el objetivo energético y la forma en la que se alcanza este objetivo son diferentes. En el marco local, el algoritmo de GDE sólo usa información local. Este no tiene en cuenta a otros consumidores o a la curva de consumo agregado de la red eléctrica. Aunque esta afirmación pueda diferir de la definición general de GDE, esta vuelve a tomar sentido en instalaciones locales equipadas con Recursos Energéticos Distribuidos (REDs). En este caso, la GDE está enfocada en la maximización del uso de la energía local, reduciéndose la dependencia con la red. El algoritmo de GDE propuesto mejora significativamente el auto-consumo del generador FV local. Experimentos simulados y reales muestran que el auto-consumo es una importante estrategia de gestión energética, reduciendo el transporte de electricidad y alentando al usuario a controlar su comportamiento energético. Sin embargo, a pesar de todas las ventajas del aumento de auto-consumo, éstas no contribuyen al suavizado del consumo agregado. Se han estudiado los efectos de las instalaciones locales en la red eléctrica cuando el algoritmo de GDE está enfocado en el aumento del auto-consumo. Este enfoque puede tener efectos no deseados, incrementando la variabilidad en el consumo agregado en vez de reducirlo. Este efecto se produce porque el algoritmo de GDE sólo considera variables locales en el marco local. Los resultados sugieren que se requiere una coordinación entre las instalaciones. A través de esta coordinación, el consumo debe ser modificado teniendo en cuenta otros elementos de la red y buscando el suavizado del consumo agregado. En el marco de la red, el algoritmo de GDE tiene en cuenta tanto información local como de la red eléctrica. En esta Tesis se ha desarrollado un algoritmo autoorganizado para controlar el consumo de la red eléctrica de manera distribuida. El objetivo de este algoritmo es el suavizado del consumo agregado, como en las implementaciones clásicas de GDE. El enfoque distribuido significa que la GDE se realiza desde el lado de los consumidores sin seguir órdenes directas emitidas por una entidad central. Por lo tanto, esta Tesis propone una estructura de gestión paralela en lugar de una jerárquica como en las redes eléctricas clásicas. Esto implica que se requiere un mecanismo de coordinación entre instalaciones. Esta Tesis pretende minimizar la cantidad de información necesaria para esta coordinación. Para lograr este objetivo, se han utilizado dos técnicas de coordinación colectiva: osciladores acoplados e inteligencia de enjambre. La combinación de estas técnicas para llevar a cabo la coordinación de un sistema con las características de la red eléctrica es en sí mismo un enfoque novedoso. Por lo tanto, este objetivo de coordinación no es sólo una contribución en el campo de la gestión energética, sino también en el campo de los sistemas colectivos. Los resultados muestran que el algoritmo de GDE propuesto reduce la diferencia entre máximos y mínimos de la red eléctrica en proporción a la cantidad de energía controlada por el algoritmo. Por lo tanto, conforme mayor es la cantidad de energía controlada por el algoritmo, mayor es la mejora de eficiencia en la red eléctrica. Además de las ventajas resultantes del suavizado del consumo agregado, otras ventajas surgen de la solución distribuida seguida en esta Tesis. Estas ventajas se resumen en las siguientes características del algoritmo de GDE propuesto: • Robustez: en un sistema centralizado, un fallo o rotura del nodo central provoca un mal funcionamiento de todo el sistema. La gestión de una red desde un punto de vista distribuido implica que no existe un nodo de control central. Un fallo en cualquier instalación no afecta el funcionamiento global de la red. • Privacidad de datos: el uso de una topología distribuida causa de que no hay un nodo central con información sensible de todos los consumidores. Esta Tesis va más allá y el algoritmo propuesto de GDE no utiliza información específica acerca de los comportamientos de los consumidores, siendo la coordinación entre las instalaciones completamente anónimos. • Escalabilidad: el algoritmo propuesto de GDE opera con cualquier número de instalaciones. Esto implica que se permite la incorporación de nuevas instalaciones sin afectar a su funcionamiento. • Bajo coste: el algoritmo de GDE propuesto se adapta a las redes actuales sin requisitos topológicos. Además, todas las instalaciones calculan su propia gestión con un bajo requerimiento computacional. Por lo tanto, no se requiere un nodo central con un alto poder de cómputo. • Rápido despliegue: las características de escalabilidad y bajo coste de los algoritmos de GDE propuestos permiten una implementación rápida. No se requiere una planificación compleja para el despliegue de este sistema. ABSTRACT This Thesis addresses the efficiency problems of the electrical grids from the consumption point of view. In particular, such efficiency is improved by means of the aggregated consumption smoothing. This objective of consumption smoothing entails two major improvements in the use of electrical grids: i) in the short term, a better use of the existing infrastructure and ii) in long term, the reduction of the required infrastructure to supply the same energy needs. In addition, this Thesis faces a new energy paradigm, where the presence of distributed generation is widespread over the electrical grids, in particular, the Photovoltaic (PV) generation. This kind of energy source affects to the operation of the grid by increasing its variability. This implies that a high penetration rate of photovoltaic electricity is pernicious for the electrical grid stability. This Thesis seeks to smooth the aggregated consumption considering this energy source. Therefore, not only the efficiency of the electrical grid is improved, but also the penetration of photovoltaic electricity into the grid can be increased. This proposal brings great benefits in the economic, social and environmental fields. The actions that influence the way that consumers use electricity in order to achieve energy savings or higher efficiency in energy use are called Demand-Side Management (DSM). This Thesis proposes two different DSM algorithms to meet the aggregated consumption smoothing objective. The difference between both DSM algorithms lie in the framework in which they take place: the local framework and the grid framework. Depending on the DSM framework, the energy goal and the procedure to reach this goal are different. In the local framework, the DSM algorithm only uses local information. It does not take into account other consumers or the aggregated consumption of the electrical grid. Although this statement may differ from the general definition of DSM, it makes sense in local facilities equipped with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). In this case, the DSM is focused on the maximization of the local energy use, reducing the grid dependence. The proposed DSM algorithm significantly improves the self-consumption of the local PV generator. Simulated and real experiments show that self-consumption serves as an important energy management strategy, reducing the electricity transport and encouraging the user to control his energy behavior. However, despite all the advantages of the self-consumption increase, they do not contribute to the smooth of the aggregated consumption. The effects of the local facilities on the electrical grid are studied when the DSM algorithm is focused on self-consumption maximization. This approach may have undesirable effects, increasing the variability in the aggregated consumption instead of reducing it. This effect occurs because the algorithm only considers local variables in the local framework. The results suggest that coordination between these facilities is required. Through this coordination, the consumption should be modified by taking into account other elements of the grid and seeking for an aggregated consumption smoothing. In the grid framework, the DSM algorithm takes into account both local and grid information. This Thesis develops a self-organized algorithm to manage the consumption of an electrical grid in a distributed way. The goal of this algorithm is the aggregated consumption smoothing, as the classical DSM implementations. The distributed approach means that the DSM is performed from the consumers side without following direct commands issued by a central entity. Therefore, this Thesis proposes a parallel management structure rather than a hierarchical one as in the classical electrical grids. This implies that a coordination mechanism between facilities is required. This Thesis seeks for minimizing the amount of information necessary for this coordination. To achieve this objective, two collective coordination techniques have been used: coupled oscillators and swarm intelligence. The combination of these techniques to perform the coordination of a system with the characteristics of the electric grid is itself a novel approach. Therefore, this coordination objective is not only a contribution in the energy management field, but in the collective systems too. Results show that the proposed DSM algorithm reduces the difference between the maximums and minimums of the electrical grid proportionally to the amount of energy controlled by the system. Thus, the greater the amount of energy controlled by the algorithm, the greater the improvement of the efficiency of the electrical grid. In addition to the advantages resulting from the smoothing of the aggregated consumption, other advantages arise from the distributed approach followed in this Thesis. These advantages are summarized in the following features of the proposed DSM algorithm: • Robustness: in a centralized system, a failure or breakage of the central node causes a malfunction of the whole system. The management of a grid from a distributed point of view implies that there is not a central control node. A failure in any facility does not affect the overall operation of the grid. • Data privacy: the use of a distributed topology causes that there is not a central node with sensitive information of all consumers. This Thesis goes a step further and the proposed DSM algorithm does not use specific information about the consumer behaviors, being the coordination between facilities completely anonymous. • Scalability: the proposed DSM algorithm operates with any number of facilities. This implies that it allows the incorporation of new facilities without affecting its operation. • Low cost: the proposed DSM algorithm adapts to the current grids without any topological requirements. In addition, every facility calculates its own management with low computational requirements. Thus, a central computational node with a high computational power is not required. • Quick deployment: the scalability and low cost features of the proposed DSM algorithms allow a quick deployment. A complex schedule of the deployment of this system is not required.

The development of this work presents the implementation of an experimental platform, which will permit to investigate on a methodology for the design and analysis of a teleoperated system, considering the delay in the communication channel. The project has been developed in partnership with the laboratory of Automatic and Robotics of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Laboratory at the Centro de Tecnologías Avanzadas de Manufactura at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. The mechanical structure of the arm that is located in the remote side has been built and the electric servomechanism has been mounted to control their movement. The experimental test of the Teleoperation system has been developed. The PC104 card commands the power interface and sensors of the DC motor of each articulation of the arm. Has developed the drives for the management of the operations of the master and the slave: send/reception of position, speed, acceleration and current data through a CAN network. The programs for the interconnection through a LAN network, between the Windows Operating System and the Real-time Operating System (QNX), has been developed. The utility of the developed platform (hardware and software) has been demonstrated.

MIMO techniques allow increasing wireless channel performance by decreasing the BER and increasing the channel throughput and in consequence are included in current mobile communication standards. MIMO techniques are based on benefiting the existence of multipath in wireless communications and the application of appropriate signal processing techniques. The singular value decomposition (SVD) is a popular signal processing technique which, based on the perfect channel state information (PCSI) knowledge at both the transmitter and receiver sides, removes inter-antenna interferences and improves channel performance. Nevertheless, the proximity of the multiple antennas at each front-end produces the so called antennas correlation effect due to the similarity of the various physical paths. In consequence, antennas correlation drops the MIMO channel performance. This investigation focuses on the analysis of a MIMO channel under transmitter-side antennas correlation conditions. First, antennas correlation is analyzed and characterized by the correlation coefficients. The analysis describes the relation between antennas correlation and the appearance of predominant layers which significantly affect the channel performance. Then, based on the SVD, pre- and post-processing is applied to remove inter-antenna interferences. Finally, bit- and power allocation strategies are applied to reach the best performance. The resulting BER reveals that antennas correlation effect diminishes the channel performance and that not necessarily all MIMO layers must be activated to obtain the best performance.

Sexpartite vaults constitute one of the most interesting chapters in European Gothic architecture. Originally, the use of the square cross-ribbed vault was limited to relatively small spaces, but when the need arose to cover spaces of considerable size, a new vault with very peculiar characteristics appeared. This new vault was a cross-ribbed vault that was reinforced in the centre by a rib that was parallel to the transverse ribs which effectively divided the vault in half. This configuration breaks the side arch into two fragments, creating a pair of windows on each side. The volumetrics of these vaults is extremely complex and the difficulties involved in their construction perhaps explain why they were abandoned in favour of the simple cross ribbed vault, now with rectangular sections. The existence of the sexpartite vault barely lasted more than fifty years, from the end of the XII century and the beginning of the XIII. Towards the end of the 19th century Viollet-le-Duc gave a succinct explanation of this type of vault. A. Choisy also, later, devotes some pages to the French sexpartite vault; since then, the subject has only been broached in a few references in later studies on Gothic architecture. However, despite its short period of existence, the sexpartite vault spread throughout Europe and was used to build important vaulting. Viollet-le-Duc's sexpartite vault could be considered to be the prototype of them all, while it is true that the studies that we have conducted so far lead us to affirm that there is a wide variety of vaults, with different volumetric spaces and different construction strategies. Therefore, we believe that this chapter of international Gothic deserves further study applying the knowledge and resources that are available today. This paper has been written to explore the most significant European sexpartite vaults. New measurement technology has led to a revolution in research into the history of construction, allowing studies to be conducted that were hitherto impossible. Thorough data collection using total station and photogrammetry has enabled us to identify the stereotomy of the voussoirs, tas-de-charges and keystones, as well as the bonding of the surfaces of the severies. A comparison of the construction techniques employed in the different vaults studied reveals common construction features and aspects that are specific to each country. Thus we are able to establish the relationship between sexpartite vaults in different European countries and their influence on each other.

Cuando la separación física entre el sistema local y remoto es relativamente corta, el retardo no es perceptible; sin embargo, cuando el manipulador local y el manipulador remoto se encuentran a una distancia lejana uno del otro, el retardo de tiempo ya no es insignificante e influye negativamente en la realización de la tarea. El retardo de tiempo en un sistema de control introduce un atraso de fase que a su vez degrada el rendimiento del sistema y puede causar inestabilidad. Los sistemas de teleoperación pueden sacar provecho de la posibilidad de estar presente en dos lugares simultáneamente, sin embargo, el uso de Internet y otras redes de conmutación de paquetes, tales como Internet2, impone retardos de tiempo variables, haciendo que los esquemas de control ya establecidos elaboren soluciones para hacer frente a inestabilidades causadas por estos retardos de tiempo variables. En este trabajo de tesis se presenta el modelado y análisis de un sistema de teloperación bilateral no lineal de n grados de libertad controlado por convergencia de estado. La comunicación entre el sitio local y remoto se realiza mediante un canal de comunicación con retardo de tiempo. El análisis presentado en este trabajo considera que el retardo puede ser constante o variable. Los principales objetivos de este trabajo son; 1) Desarrollar una arquitectura de control no lineal garantizando la estabilidad del sistema teleoperado, 2) Evaluar la estabilidad del sistema considerando el retardo en la comunicación, y 3) Implementación de los algoritmos desarrollados para probar el desempeño de los mismos en un sistema experimental de 3 grados de libertad. A través de la teoría de Estabilidad de Lyapunov y el funcional Lyapunov-Krasovskii, se demuestra que el sistema de lazo cerrado es asintóticamente estable. Estas conclusiones de estabilidad se han obtenido mediante la integración de la función de Lyapunov y aplicando el Lema de Barbalat. Se demuestra también que se logra sincronizar las posiciones del manipulador local y remoto cuando el operador humano no mueve el manipulador local y el manipulador remoto se mueve libremente. El esquema de control propuesto se ha validado mediante simulación y en forma experimental empleando un sistema de teleoperación real desarrollado en esta tesis doctoral y que consta de un un manipulador serie planar de tres grados de libertad, un manipulador local, PHANTOM Omni, el cual es un dispositivo haptico fabricado que consta de 3 grados de libertad (en fuerza) y que proporciona realimentación de fuerza en los ejes x,y,z. El control en tiempo real se ha diseñado usando el Sistema Operativo en Tiempo Real QuaRC de QUARC en el lado local y el Simulink Real-Time Windows TargetTM en el lado remoto. Para finalizar el resumen se destaca el impacto de esta tesis en el mundo científico a través de los resultados publicados: 2 artículos en revistas con índice de impacto , 1 artículo en una revista indexada en Sistemas, Cibernética e Informática, 7 artículos en congresos y ha obtenido un premio en la 9a. Conferencia Iberoamericana en Sistemas, Cibernética e Informática, 2010. ABSTRACT When the physical separation between the local and remote system is relatively short, the delay is not noticeable; however, when the local manipulator and the remote manipulator are at a far distance from each other, the time delay is no longer negligible and negatively influences the performance of the task. The time delay in a control system introduces a phase delay which in turn degrades the system performance and cause instability. Teleoperation systems can benefit from the ability to be in two places simultaneously, however, the use of Internet and other packet switched networks, such as Internet2, imposes varying time delays, making established control schemes to develop solutions to address these instabilities caused by different time delays. In this thesis work we present a modeling and analysis of a nonlinear bilateral teloperation system of n degrees of freedom controlled by state convergence strategy. Communication between the local and remote site is via a communication channel with time delay. The analysis presented in this work considers that the time-delay can be constant or variable. The main objectives of this work are; 1) Develop a nonlinear control schemes to ensure the stability of the teleoperated system, 2) Evaluate the system stability considering the delay in communication, and 3) Implementation of algorithms developed to test the performance of the teleoperation system in an experimental system of 3 degrees of freedom. Through the Theory of Stability of Lyapunov and the functional Lyapunov-Krasovskii, one demonstrates that the closed loop system is asymptotically stable.. The conclusions about stability were obtained by integration of the Lyapunov function and applying Barbalat Lemma. It further shows that the positions of the local and remote manipulator are synchronize when the human operator stops applying a constant force and the remote manipulator does not interact with the environment. The proposed control scheme has been validated by means of simulation and in experimental form using a developed system of real teleoperation in this doctoral thesis, which consists of a series planar manipulator of three degrees of freedom, a local manipulator, PHANTOM Omni, which is an haptic device that consists of 3 degrees of freedom (in force) and that provide feeback force in x-axis, and, z. The control in real time has been designed using the Operating system in Real time QuaRC of Quanser in the local side and the Simulink Real-Time Windows Target in the remote side. In order to finalize the summary, the highlights impact of this thesis in the scientific world are shows through the published results: 2 articles in Journals with impact factor, one article in a indexed Journal on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics, 7 articles in Conferences and has won an award in 9a. Conferencia Iberoamericana en Sistemas, Cibernética e Informática, 2010.

Amblyseius swirskii (Athias-Henriot) is a polyphagous predatory mite which feeds on pollen and small arthropod preys like whiteflies, thrips and mites. This species is widely used in IPM programs in greenhouses, being essential for its success, to obtain information about the non target effects of the pesticides currently used in those crops where the mite is artificially released. This work describes a laboratory contact residual test for evaluating lethal (mortality after 72 hour exposure to fresh residues) and sublethal effects (fecundity and fertility of the surviving mites) of eleven modern pesticides to adults of A. swirskii. Spiromesifen is lipogenesis inhibitor; flonicamid a selective feeding inhibitor with a mode of action not totally known; flubendiamide a modulator of the rhyanodin receptor, sulfoxaflor has a complex mode of action not totally ascertained; metaflumizone is a voltage dependent sodium channel blocker; methoxyfenozide is an IGR, spirotetramat inhibits lipids; abamectin and emamectin activate the Cl- channel; spinosad is a neurotix naturalyte and deltamethrin a pyrethroid used as positive standard. Selected pesticides are effective against different key pests present in horticultural crop areas and were always applied at the maximum field recommended concentration in Spain if registered, or at the concentration recommended by the supplier. Out of the tested pesticides, spiromesifen, flonicamid, flubendiamide, sulfoxaflor, metaflumizone, methoxyfenozide and spirotetramat were harmless to adults of the predatory mite (IOBC toxicity class 1). The rest of pesticides exhibited some negative effects: emamectin was slightly harmful (IOBC 2), deltamethrin moderately harmful (IOBC 3) and spinosad and abamectin harmful (IOBC 4). Further testing under more realistic conditions is needed for those pesticides having some harmful effect on the mite prior deciding their joint use or not. Uno de los capítulos más interesantes del gótico europeo lo constituyen las bóvedas sexpartitas, sin lugar a dudas una de las bóvedas más singulares jamás creadas dentro de este estilo. Las primeras bóvedas góticas, en cruce de ojivas y de planta cuadrada, limitaban su uso a espacios relativamente pequeños, pero ante la necesidad de cubrir espacios de considerables dimensiones, apareció una nueva bóveda de características muy peculiares; la sexpartita. Esta bóveda en cruce de ojivas está reforzada por el centro con un arco paralelo a los arcos fajones que la divide por la mitad y que fragmenta el arco formero en dos, creando una pareja de ventanales en cada lado. La sencilla superficie en bóveda de arista, en el origen de las bóvedas de crucería, se complica extraordinariamente creando una volumetría de gran complejidad con seis cuarteles de plementería y con seis apoyos de distinto tamaño, cuatros esquineros y dos centrales más pequeños. Las dificultades que implica la construcción de este tipo de bóvedas explican quizás su abandono prematuro y la vuelta a la bóveda de crucería simple, ahora de tramos rectangulares. No obstante, a pesar de su corta existencia, la bóveda sexpartita fue la gran protagonista de los inicios del gótico y con ella se llevaron a cabo importantes abovedamientos, desde Inglaterra hasta Rumanía. La disciplina de la Historia de la Construcción se vio extraordinariamente favorecida por los estudios realizados en el siglo XIX, sin embargo su investigación se abandona durante el siglo XX para ser recuperada recientemente. Viollet-le-Duc, a finales del s. XIX, hace una sucinta explicación de este tipo de bóvedas. También Auguste Choisy, más tarde, dedica unas páginas a la bóveda sexpartita francesa; desde entonces, este tema, ha merecido escasísimas referencias en los estudios posteriores. Esta investigación se enmarca en este contexto y pretende poner de manifiesto los conocimientos geométricos y constructivos que hicieron posible la realización de las bóvedas sexpartitas europeas. Para ello se ha llevado a cabo la investigación de las principales bóvedas en Europa occidental; Francia, España, Inglaterra, Alemania, Suiza e Italia. Su estudio comparativo nos ha permitido poner de manifiesto sus características constructivas comunes y aquellos aspectos propios de cada país, así como algunos de los canales de comunicación que permitieron la expansión de esta arquitectura. Las nuevas tecnologías de medición, el escáner láser, la estación total, la fotogrametría, etc., han supuesto una revolución para la documentación y restauración del Patrimonio y un salto cualitativo formidable para el análisis de las bóvedas góticas, permitiendo estudios de la arquitectura histórica hasta ahora inabordables. Para realizar el análisis de las bóvedas sexpartitas europeas se ha llevado a cabo un levantamiento exhaustivo de las mismas, lo que ha permitido definir su despiece, obteniendo la forma de la talla de cada uno de los elementos constructivos que la componen; jarjas, dovelas, claves y plementería. La obtención de estos datos nos ha permitido abordar un profundo estudio de su estereotomía y construcción, aportando datos inéditos hasta el momento. Por otro lado se ha llevado a cabo la detección y catalogación de las principales bóvedas sexpartitas que aún se conservan en Europa. Los estudios realizados nos permiten afirmar que la bóveda sexpartita surge en Francia en la segunda mitad del siglo XII, utilizándose en las principales catedrales francesas, como Notre Dame de Paris, Bourges o Laon. A comienzos del siglo XIII cae en desuso en Francia y comienza su expansión por el resto de Europa, donde se abandona medio siglo después, desapareciendo definitivamente del gótico europeo. Mientras que los ejemplos que datan del siglo XII muestran soluciones escasamente desarrolladas y propias del románico, las bóvedas construidas en el siglo XIII muestran soluciones enormemente complejas, con grandes jarjamentos e inteligentes estrategias constructivas y geométricas que permiten la simplificación de sus estructuras auxiliares y una mayor libertad en su diseño. Estas bóvedas son el reflejo del desarrollo de la estereotomía gótica en sus comienzos por lo que su estudio nos ha permitido conocer el desarrollo y la evolución del gótico primitivo en Europa. ABSTRACT One of the most interesting chapters of European Gothic is the sexpartite vault, without doubt one of the most remarkable vaults ever created within this style. The first Gothic vaults, with crossed ribs on a square base, were restricted to relatively small areas, but a new vault, with very particular characteristics emerged to address the need to cover spaces of considerable size; the sexpartite vault. This cross-ribbed vault is reinforced in the centre by an arch that runs parallel to the transverse arches, divides the vault in half and splits the wall arch in two, creating a pair of windows, one on each side. The simple groin vault surface, the source of ribbed vaults, was greatly complicated creating a highly complex volume with six sections of severies and with six supports of different sizes, four on the corners and two smaller central ones. The construction difficulties involved in building this type of vault may explain its premature abandonment and a return to the simple cross-ribbed vault, now in rectangular sections. However, despite its brief existence, the sexpartite vault was the great protagonist of the beginnings of Gothic architecture and important vaulting was built using this system from England to Romania. Studies undertaken in the 19th century helped the History of Construction as a discipline tremendously. Research was abandoned during the twentieth century however, and has only recently been taken up again. Towards the end of the 19th century, Viollet-le-Duc gave a brief description of this type of vault. Later, Auguste de Choisy also devoted some pages to the French sexpartite vault; since then, later studies have made very few references to it. Against this background, this research now attempts to bring to light the knowledge of geometry and construction that made the construction of the European sexpartite vault possible. To this end, the main vaults in Western Europe - France, Spain, England, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, have been studied. By making a comparative study we have been able to reveal the common construction features and those that are specific to each country, as well as some of the channels of communication that enabled this architecture to spread. New measuring technologies, the laser scanner, total station, photogrammetry, etc., have given rise to a revolution in heritage documentation and restoration, as well as facilitating a huge qualitative leap for the analysis of Gothic vaults, enabling studies of historical architecture that until now were inaccessible. A comprehensive survey was carried out to be able to analyse European sexpartite vaults. We could thus create an exploded view, which enabled us to obtain the form of each of the elements; tas-de-charges, voussoirs, keystones and severies. The data gathered provided previously unknown facts that enabled us to make an in-depth study of stereotomy and construction. Furthermore, the main sexpartite vaults still preserved in Europe have been identified and categorised. The studies undertaken allowed us to affirm that the sexpartite vault appeared in France in the second half of the twelfth century, being used in the main French cathedrals, such as Notre Dame de Paris, Bourges or Laon. At the beginning of the thirteenth century it fell into disuse in France and began to expand throughout the rest of Europe, where it was abandoned half a century later, disappearing from European Gothic for good. While the examples dating back to the 12th century display poorly developed solutions more characteristic of the Romanesque, the vaults built in the 13th century reveal enormously complex solutions, with large tas-de-charges and intelligent construction and geometric strategies that allowed auxiliary support structures to be simplified, and gave more freedom to design. These vaults reflect the beginnings of Gothic stereotomy and by studying them we have been able to learn more about the development and evolution of Early Gothic architecture in Europe.
