For the past 20 years, dynamic analysis of shells has been one of the most fascinating fields for research. Using the new light materials the building engineer soon discovered that the subsequent reduction of gravity forces produced not only the desired shape freedom but the appearance of ecologic loads as the first factor of design; loads which present strong random properties and marked dynamic influence. On the other hand, the technological advance in the aeronautical and astronautical field placed the engineers in front of shell structures of nonconventional shape and able to sustain substantialy dynamic loads. The response to the increasingly challenger problems of the last two decades has been very bright; new forms, new materials and new methods of analysis have arosen in the design of off-shore platforms, nuclear vessels, space crafts, etc. Thanks to the intensity of the lived years we have at our disposition a coherent and homogeneous amount of knowledge which enable us to face problems of inconceivable complexity when IASS was founded. The open minded approach to classical problems and the impact of the computer are, probably, important factors in the Renaissance we have enjoyed these years, and a good proof of this are the papers presented to the previous IASS meetings as well as that we are going to consider in this one. Particularly striking is the great number of papers based on a mathematical modeling in front of the meagerness of those treating laboratory experiments on physical models. The universal entering of the computer into almost every phase of our lifes, and the cost of physical models, are –may be- reasons for this lack of experimental methods. Nevertheless they continue offering useful results as are those obtained with the shaking-table in which the computer plays an essential role in the application of loads as well as in the instantaneous treatment of control data. Plates 1 and 2 record the papers presented under dynamic heading, 40% of them are from Japan in good correlation with the relevance that Japanese research has traditionally showed in this area. Also interesting is to find old friends as profesors Tanaka, Nishimura and Kostem who presented valuable papers in previous IASS conferences. As we see there are papers representative of all tendencies, even purely analytical! Better than discuss them in detail, which can be done after the authors presentation, I think we can comment in the general pattern of the dynamical approach are summarized in plate 3.

ABSTRACT Strengthening of existing structures with externally bonded fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) has become the most common application of advanced composite materials in construction. These materials exhibit many advantages in comparison with traditional ones (corrosion resistance, light weight, easy to apply, etc.). But despite countless researches have been done, there are still doubts about some aspects of their behaviour and applications are carried out only with the help of guidelines, without official regulations. The aim of this work is to improve the knowledge on this retrofitting technique, particularly in regard to flexural strengthening of masonry structures. Reinforced concrete is often the strengthened material and external glued FRP plates are used to improve its flexural, shear or compressive (by wrapping) capacity. However the use of this technique on other materials like masonry structures looks promising. Unreinforced masonry is characterized for being a good material to support compressive stresses but really bad to withstand tensile ones. Glue composite plates can improve the flexural capacity of masonry elements subject to bending. But a proper bond between FRP sheet and masonry must be ensured to do that, especially in old buildings whose surface can be damaged due to being outside or ageing. The main objectives of the work and the methodology carried out are described In Chapter II. An extensive overview of the state of art is done in Chapter III. In Section III.1 physical and mechanical properties of fibers, matrix and composites and their main applications are related. Durability aspects are especially emphasized. Section III.2 includes an historical overview of theoretical and empirical researches on concrete structures strengthened gluing FRP plates to improve their flexural behaviour. Section III.3 focuses on the critical point of bonding between FRP and substrate. Some theoretical models to prevent debonding of FRP laminate are reviewed, it has made a distinction between models for detachment at the end of the plate or debonding in the intermediate zones due to the effects of cracks. It is observed a lack of agreement in the proposals. Some experimental studies on bonding between masonry and FRP are also related in this chapter. The particular characteristics of masonry structures are analyzed in Section III.4. Besides some empirical and theoretical investigations relative to improve their flexural capacity with FRP sheets are reviewed. The mechanical behaviour of strengthened walls subject to pure bending (without compression) has been established by several authors, but this is an unusual situation for real masonry. Neither mechanical behaviour of walls subject to bending and compression nor influence of axial load in the final capacity of the strengthened element are adequately studied. In regard to theoretical studies, the different proposals are based on reinforced concrete analytical methods and share common design principles. However, they present differences, especially, about three aspects: 1) the constitutive law of masonry, 2) the value of ultimate FRP strain and 3) the desirable failure mode that must be looked for. In spite of them, a good agreement between each experimental program and its theoretical study is often exhibited due to enormous disparity in considered test parameters. Each experimental program usually presents a characteristic failure mode and the proposed formulation results appropriate for this one. It seems necessary to develop a method for FRP strengthened walls subject to bending and compression enable for all failure modes (due to FRP or masonry). Some common damages in masonry subject to bending are explained in Section III.4. Examples of FRP strengthening to repair or prevent these damages are also written. Two small experimental programs are carried out in Eduardo Torroja Institute to improve the knowledge on this topic. The first one is concerned about the bond between FRP plates and damaged masonry (section IV.1) and the second one is related to the mechanical behaviour of the strengthened masonry specimens subject to out of plane bending combined with axial force (section IV.2). In the Chapter V some bond models to prevent the debonding at the FRP plate end are checked. It is confirmed that their predictions are so different. A pure-shear test database is compiled with results from the existing literature and others from the experimental program described in section IV.1. This database lets know which of the considered model is more suitable to design anchorage lengths of glued FRP to masonry. In the Chapter VI a method to check unreinforced masonry sections with external FRP strengthening subject to bending and compression to the ultimate limit state is proposed. This method is based on concrete reinforced one, but it is adapted to strengthened masonry. A bilinear constitutive law is used for masonry (according to CTE DB SE-F). Its simplicity helps to develop the model formulation and it has proven to be suitable to predict bending capacity either for FRP failures or masonry crushing. With regard to FRP, the design strain is limited. It is taken into account different aspects which cause the plate can’t reach its ultimate strength, like intermediate FRP debonding induced by opening cracking or environmental damage. A “bond factor” is proposed. It is obtained by means of an experimental bending test database that includes 68 results from the existing literature and from the experimental program described in section IV.2. The proposed formulation has also been checked with the help of bending database. The effects of the main parameters, like axial load, FRP design effective strain or FRP stiffness, on the bending capacity of the strengthened element are studied in Chapter VII. Finally, the main conclusions from the work carried out are summarized in Chapter VIII. Future lines of research to be explored are suggested as well.

This contribution deals with the question, what makes cities sustainable and integrative, and suggests an approach for "liveable cities of tomorrow" designed to sustain mobility. The liveable city of tomorrow needs to meet both ecological and social requirements in an integrative approach. To design urban patterns appropriate or “sustainable mobility” based on a concept of mobility defined as the number of accessible destinations (different to that for “fossil mobility” defined as the ability to cover distances) is a key element of such an approach. Considering the limited reserves of fossil fuels and the long lifetime of the built structure, mobility needs to rely on modes independent of fossil fuels (public transport and pedestrians) to make it sustainable and the urban pattern needs to be developed appropriately for these modes. Crucial for the success of public transport is the location of buildings within the catchment area of stops. An attractive urban environment for pedestrians is characterised by short distances in a compact settlement with appropriate/qualified urban density and mixed land use as well as by attractive public space. This, complemented by an integrative urban development on the quarter level including neighbourhood management with a broad spectrum of activity areas (social infrastructure, integration of diverse social and ethnic groups, health promotion, community living, etc.), results in increased liveability. The role of information technology in this context is to support a sustainable use of the built structures by organisational instruments. Sustainable and liveable communities offer many benefits for health, safety and well-being of their inhabitants.

A significant number of short-to-mid height RC buildings with wide beams have been constructed in areas of moderate seismicity of Spain, mainly for housing and administrative use. The buildings have a framed structure with one-way slabs; the wide beams constitute the distinctive characteristic, their depth being equal to that of the rest of the slab, thus providing a flat lower surface, convenient for construction and the layout of facilities. Seismic behavior in the direction of the wide beams appears to be deficient because of: (i) low lateral strength, mainly because of the small effective depth of the beams, (ii) inherent low ductility of the wide beams, generated by high amount of reinforcement, (iii) the big strut compressive forces developed inside the column-beam connections due to the low height of the beams, and (iv) the fact that the wide beams are wider than the columns, meaning that the contribution of the outer zones to the resistance of the beam-column joints is unreliable because there is no torsion reinforcement. In the orthogonal direction, the behavior is worse since the only members of the slabs that contribute to the lateral resistance are the joists and the façade beams. Moreover, these buildings were designed with codes that did not include ductility requirements and required only a low lateral resistance; indeed, in many cases, seismic action was not considered at all. Consequently, the seismic capacity of these structures is not reliable. The objective of this research is to assess numerically this capability, whereas further research will aim to propose retrofit strategies. The research approach consists of: (i) selecting a number of 3-story and 6-story buildings that represent the vast majority of the existing ones and (ii) evaluating their vulnerability through three types of analyses, namely: code-type, push-over and nonlinear dynamic analysis. Given the low lateral resistance of the main frames, the cooperation of the masonry infill walls is accounted for; for each representative building, three wall densities are considered. The results of the analyses show that the buildings in question exhibit inadequate seismic behavior in most of the examined situations. In general, the relative performance is less deficient for Target Drift CP (Collapse Prevention) than for IO (Immediate Occupancy). Since these buildings are selected to be representative of the vast majority of buildings with wide beams that were constructed in Spain without accounting for any seismic consideration, our conclusions can be extrapolated to a broader scenario.

ABSTRACT The investigation of aerodynamic flow above the ship’s heliports is directly related to the aircraft safe operation, because the environment flow conditions may exceed the aircraft certification limits. Aerodynamic ship’s environment is highly complex and it is influenced by a large number of factors (stacks, antennae, masts, …) related to each specific ship configuration. The flow under investigation occurs into the wake produced above the flight deck of a frigate, that is strongly influenced by the superstructure. This flow is similar to one produced around tall buildings or heliports located in urban areas, thus in both of them, the air is flowing around sharp-edges box-like structures, producing three-dimensional and highly turbulent flows. This Thesis studies the problem from an experimental point of view, by means of wind tunnel simulations and measurements of the flow field around reduced scale frigates models. Tools used in this work are the experimental techniques, as flow visualization, particle image velocimetry, laser Doppler anemometry and pressure electronic scanners. These techniques provide information about the flow in order to obtain a more complete insight of this kind of flows. The exploitation of this insight is used for the design of a new flow control concept, based on the modification of the basic frigate geometry. This new design consists in the hangar roof curvature modification that produces a smoothing of the descendent step located downstream the hangar. Modified geometries are tested in wind tunnel by means of the same methodology as the original frigate, thus a comparative analysis is established in order to perform an assessment of effectiveness. This analysis has shown good results in displacing the adverse flow from the helicopter operation path to the nearest hangar region, reducing the pilot load and the accident risks during on board operations.

Solar Decathlon Europe (SDE) is an international multidisciplinary competition in which 20 universityteams build and operate energy-efficient solar-powered houses. The aim of SDE is not only scientificbut also educational and divulgative, making visitors to understand the problems presented by realengineering applications and architecture. From a research perspective, the energy data gathered dur-ing the competition constitutes a very promising information for the analysis and understanding of thephotovoltaic systems, grid structures, energy balances and energy efficiency of the set of houses. Thisarticle focuses on the electrical energy components of SDE competition, the energy performance of thehouses and the strategies and behaviors followed by the teams. The rules evaluate the houses? electricalenergy self-sufficiency by looking at the electricity autonomy in terms of aggregated electrical energybalance; the temporary generation-consumption profile pattern correlation; and the use of electricityper measurable area. Although the houses are evaluated under the same climatological and consump-tion conditions, production results are very different due to the specific engineering solutions (differentelectrical topologies, presence or absence of batteries, diverse photovoltaic module solutions, etc.)

The city of Lorca (Spain) was hit on May 11th, 2011, by two consecutive earth-quakes of magnitudes 4.6 and 5.2 Mw, causing casualties and important damage in buildings. Many of the damaged structures were reinforced concrete frames with wide beams. This study quantifies the expected level of damage on this structural type in the case of the Lorca earth-quake by means of a seismic index Iv that compares the energy input by the earthquake with the energy absorption/dissipation capacity of the structure. The prototype frames investigated represent structures designed in two time periods (1994–2002 and 2003–2008), in which the applicable codes were different. The influence of the masonry infill walls and the proneness of the frames to concentrate damage in a given story were further investigated through nonlinear dynamic response analyses. It is found that (1) the seismic index method predicts levels of damage that range from moderate/severe to complete collapse; this prediction is consistent with the observed damage; (2) the presence of masonry infill walls makes the structure very prone to damage concentration and reduces the overall seismic capacity of the building; and (3) a proper hierarchy of strength between beams and columns that guarantees the formation of a strong column-weak beam mechanism (as prescribed by seismic codes), as well as the adoption of counter-measures to avoid the negative interaction between non-structural infill walls and the main frame, would have reduced the level of damage from Iv=1 (collapse) to about Iv=0.5 (moderate/severe damage)

The automation of domestic services began to be implemented in buildings since the late nineteenth century, and today we are used to terms like ‘intelligent buildings’, ‘digital home’ or ‘domotic buildings’. These concepts tell us about constructions which integrate new technologies in order to improve comfort, optimize energy consumption or enhance the security of users. In conjunction, building regulations have been updated to suit the needs of society and to regulate these new facilities in such structures. However, we are not always sure about how far, from the quantitative or qualitative point of view, legislation should regulate certain aspects of the building activity. Consequently, content analysis is adopted in this research to determine the influence of building regulations in the implementation of new technologies in the construction process. This study includes the analysis of different European regulations, the collection and documentation of such guidelines that have been established and a study of the impact that all of these have had in the way we start thinking an architectural project. The achievements of the research could be explained in terms of the regulatory requirements that must be taken into account in order to achieve a successful implementation of a home automation system, and the key finding has been the confirmation of how the design of smart buildings may be promoted through specific regulatory requirements while other factors, such as the global economic situation, do not seem to affect directly the rate of penetration of home automation in construction.

Since the advent of the computer into the engineering field, the application of the numerical methods to the solution of engineering problems has grown very rapidly. Among the different computer methods of structural analysis the Finite Element (FEM) has been predominantly used. Shells and space structures are very attractive and have been constructed to solve a large variety of functional problems (roofs, industrial building, aqueducts, reservoirs, footings etc). In this type of structures aesthetics, structural efficiency and concept play a very important role. This class of structures can be divided into three main groups, namely continuous (concrete) shells, space frames and tension (fabric, pneumatic, cable etc )structures. In the following only the current applications of the FEM to the analysis of continuous shell structures will be discussed. However, some of the comments on this class of shells can be also applied to some extend to the others, but obviously specific computational problems will be restricted to the continuous shells. Different aspects, such as, the type of elements,input-output computational techniques etc, of the analysis of shells by the FEM will be described below. Clearly, the improvements and developments occurring in general for the FEM since its first appearance in the fifties have had a significative impact on the particular class of structures under discussion.

The design of shell and spatial structures represents an important challenge even with the use of the modern computer technology. If we concentrate in the concrete shell structures many problems must be faced, such as the conceptual and structural disposition, optimal shape design, analysis, construction methods, details etc. and all these problems are interconnected among them. As an example the shape optimization requires the use of several disciplines like structural analysis, sensitivity analysis, optimization strategies and geometrical design concepts. Similar comments can be applied to other space structures such as steel trusses with single or double shape and tension structures. In relation to the analysis the Finite Element Method appears to be the most extended and versatile technique used in the practice. In the application of this method several issues arise. First the derivation of the pertinent shell theory or alternatively the degenerated 3-D solid approach should be chosen. According to the previous election the suitable FE model has to be adopted i.e. the displacement, stress or mixed formulated element. The good behavior of the shell structures under dead loads that are carried out towards the supports by mainly compressive stresses is impaired by the high imperfection sensitivity usually exhibited by these structures. This last effect is important particularly if large deformation and material nonlinearities of the shell may interact unfavorably, as can be the case for thin reinforced shells. In this respect the study of the stability of the shell represents a compulsory step in the analysis. Therefore there are currently very active fields of research such as the different descriptions of consistent nonlinear shell models given by Simo, Fox and Rifai, Mantzenmiller and Buchter and Ramm among others, the consistent formulation of efficient tangent stiffness as the one presented by Ortiz and Schweizerhof and Wringgers, with application to concrete shells exhibiting creep behavior given by Scordelis and coworkers; and finally the development of numerical techniques needed to trace the nonlinear response of the structure. The objective of this paper is concentrated in the last research aspect i.e. in the presentation of a state-of-the-art on the existing solution techniques for nonlinear analysis of structures. In this presentation the following excellent reviews on this subject will be mainly used.

Civil buildings are not specifically designed to support blast loads, but it is important to take into account these potential scenarios because of their catastrophic effects, on persons and structures. A practical way to consider explosions on reinforced concrete structures is necessary. With this objective we propose a methodology to evaluate blast loads on large concrete buildings, using LS-DYNA code for calculation, with Lagrangian finite elements and explicit time integration. The methodology has three steps. First, individual structural elements of the building like columns and slabs are studied, using continuum 3D elements models subjected to blast loads. In these models reinforced concrete is represented with high precision, using advanced material models such as CSCM_CONCRETE model, and segregated rebars constrained within the continuum mesh. Regrettably this approach cannot be used for large structures because of its excessive computational cost. Second, models based on structural elements are developed, using shells and beam elements. In these models concrete is represented using CONCRETE_EC2 model and segregated rebars with offset formulation, being calibrated with continuum elements models from step one to obtain the same structural response: displacement, velocity, acceleration, damage and erosion. Third, models basedon structural elements are used to develop large models of complete buildings. They are used to study the global response of buildings subjected to blast loads and progressive collapse. This article carries out different techniques needed to calibrate properly the models based on structural elements, using shells and beam elements, in order to provide results of sufficient accuracy that can be used with moderate computational cost.

It is surprising that the essential role of the backfill at the extrados of masonry vaults and domes has been ignored or misunderstood in the technical literature. The main purpose of this work is to contribute to overcome such a lacuna. Firstly, the morphological configuration of backfill that can be found in the Iberian Peninsula in Roman, Romanesque and Gothic buildings is also presented. Two annexes are devoted to show the collected database and the result of its analysis. Then, the structural role of backfill is characterised, as well as the intrinsic and most significant properties related both to its configuration and structural function. Thus, specific thrust values are proposed to analyse such structures, taking into account the nature and boundary conditions of walls and vaults. The simple, powerful and sufficient tool of analysis that has been developed is also presented, including the main variables involved, especially the backfill. The limit analysis method, followed by a stress verification, including the extrados of vaults and backfill interface, and an enhanced algorithm based on energetic considerations, are used to provide technicians a tool to understand this type of structures efficiently, in a balanced situation between the rather scarce amount of information and sufficient accuracy and liability. The tool was calibrated by comparing the experimental and theoretical results provided by different authors regarding several examples, as well as our own experimental campaign carried out at the Civil Engineering School of Madrid. A parametric study is also developed, providing original information about the structural importance of several parameters, as the span-to-depth or span-to-rise ratios, relative height of backfill, etc. As a result of this analysis, critical points and tendencies of structural behaviour were detected, helping technicians to inspect and analyse these constructions, also revealing some particularities related to their construction. Furthermore, a set of three examples corresponding to the three structural typologies analysed (Roman, Romanesque and Gothic) is studied. The crucial importance of backfill is then highlighted, not only for the stability of vaults or domes, but also for the equilibrium of walls, pillars and buttresses. The vast edified legacy composed of the historical adobe load-bearing walls which can be found spread all over the Iberian peninsula has, in the region of Aveiro (Portugal), its maximum expression, both from a quantitative point of view (around 30% of the local construction) and a typological point of view, including a considerable number of different types of constructions (residential buildings, military buildings, churches, industrial buildings, etc.), most of which have a recognized high historical, architectural and patrimonial value. The conservation and/or rehabilitation of many of these edifications has been neglected, since its gradual abandonment as constructive technique during the second half of the 20th century. As a consequence of this posture of general passivity, it is nowadays visible the state of pronounced damage manifested by great part of these constructions, which has been leading to their abandonment and state of ruin. In most cases, the option for demolition has been the solution found to face the actual state of these constructions. However, in recent years, a growing interest in the preservation and maintenance of the adobe constructions has become visible by the envolved parties, with the obvious consequence of rehabilitation. By so, it becomes mandatory to develop strategies of intervention that, through rehabilitation, are able to extend the useful life of the existing structures, allowing on one hand, to establish methodologies to analyze their safety state and determine the actions needed to ensure their protection against existing pressures and, when applicable, the occurrence of new demands due to changes of use or extensions, and on the other hand, to give response to the main damage mechanisms to which these structures are exposed. Because these structures were built using not very well know techniques and materials, which have been, in the meantime, abandoned, it is now crucial that these are object of a previous phase of study and multidisciplinary investigation, essential not only to their characterization and comprehension, but also to the diagnosis of the main pathological processes that affect them. In this context, the present study had as main goal to develop the analysis and knowledge regarding the properties and resistant parameters of the adobe masonry as well as bringing to the light of day the actual state of the existing adobe constructions, making evident the main damage mechanisms by which they are affected and analyzing, through their occurrence, the vulnerability of the mentioned properties and resistant parameters. By so, it was objective of the present study the development of a result database which on one hand, supports the execution of rehabilitation interventions and/or strengthening of these constructions and, on other hand, allows the development of improvement solutions in the mechanical characteristics of the adobe masonry which permit corrections of deficiencies in their structural behavior with a special emphasis on the influence of water. Thus, a database of results was developed. Its goal is, on one hand, to support the rehabilitation or consolidation interventions on these structures - allowing for a quick analysis of the safety state of the adobe walls from expedite data and calculus resources and, on the other hand, to study improvement or correction solutions of their structural behavior.

ABSTRACT At present there is an agreement about the importance to predict the vibroacoustic response of structures (buildings, vehicles, aircrafts, satellites, etc.). In addition, there has become clear over the time that the frequency range over which the response is important has been shift to higher frequencies in almost all the engineering fields. As a consequence, the numerical methods for high frequency analysis have increase in importance. One the most widespread methods for this type of analysis is the one based on the Statistical Energy Analysis, SEA. This method has shown to provide a good balance among calculation power, accuracy and liability. Within a SEA, a system (structure, cavities, surrounding air) is modeled by a coefficients matrix that depends directly on the loss factors of the different parts of the system. Formally, SEA is a very handy and intuitive analysis method whose greatest handicap is precisely the determination of the loss factors. The existing set of analytical or numerical equations to obtain the loss factor values is not enough, so that usually it is necessary to use experimental techniques whether it is to its determination to to check the estimated values by another mean. The experimental determination presents drawbacks, as well. To obtain them great and complex experimental setups are needed including requirements that can be very demanding including numerical problems related to the values of the loss factors themselves, their relative value and the characteristics of the matrices they define. The present work studies the characterization of vibroacousti systems by this SEA method. It focuses on the accurate determination of the loss factors values. Given all the problems an experimental setup of these characteristics can show, the work is divided in two parts. In the first part, the influence of all the quantities involved on the determination of the loss factors is studied by a relative uncertainty estimation, which, by means of the normalised sensitivity coefficients, will provide an insight about the importance of every input quantities (energies and input powers, mainly) on the final result. Besides, this part, gives an uncertainty model that has allowed assessing the error of one of the methods more widely used to characterize the loss factors: the 2-subsystem approach. In the second part, use of the former conclusions is used. An equation for the input power into the subsystems is proposed. This equation allows simplifying the experimental setup without changing the liability of the test. A detailed study of the SEA matrix properties leads to propose a robust determination method of this SEA matrix by a Monte Carlo filtering. In turn, this new method shows how the numerical problems of the SEA matrix can be overcome Finally, a solution is proposed for the case where not all the subsystems are excited. The method proposed do not allows obtaining the whole set of coefficients of the SEA matrix, but the simple fact of getting partial sets of loss factors is a significant advance and, over all, it opens the door to the development of new methods that loosen the requirements that an experimental determination of a SEA matrix have.

ABSTRACT Comic narrative architecture. Describing four dimensions with two Most of the studies with an academic focus around comics and architecture have centered their view more on the different realities represented in the media, in its sets, than in the structure of comics itself. There is a graphic aspect that has been ignored, or at least has not gained the prominence it deserves: the spaces rendered in the comics are set in a medium that is conceived and structured in a similar way as the architect draws and conceives architecture. In basics, tools for designing and representing architecture are very similar to those used by the cartoonist. Pencil, ink and color on paper, combined working on a board, that is birthplace of both worlds. Throughout this thesis its shown how drawing connects creators of graphic stories and buildings. The relationship goes beyond the use that comics can do of the Vitruvian provisions, ichnographia, ortographia or scenographia (plan, elevation, perspective), to the arrange itself that it makes with space on the page, in tune with the way in which architectural structures are conceived. The thesis starts with a chapter that collects existing comics theories and their possible intersection with architectural rendering. In this first step of study on the state of affairs, the focus has been over studies from the last twenty years. It is a period in which, at the same time that there has been a creative explosion in the world of comics, some theorists have worked with a more formal and visual approach. After collecting theories in the first chapter, a historical tour is made to search for possible resonances of “mental architectures” in the past. This search for references beyond the nineteenth century, when the medium was born in its current form, is already a regular process in various recent studies that have served as inspiration. We preferred to locate this as a second chapter, to avoid giving the work a character of History, and reenforcing its visual approach. The third chapter analyzes a series of comics and authors, looking for different strategies for describing spaces and stories that occur in them. The growth of cases in recent decades has shown how the development of a field depends both on the existence of a critical mass in a connected and productive enviroment, and the appearance of individuals who open doors to others with the personal crystallization that they make on that context. The relationship between architecture and the modern comic is analyzed in a fourth chapter. A relationship that is described starting from their parents, and then going through a growing cast of experiences in which graphic narrative and architecture are closely linked. Inspired by the strategy used Gubern and Gasca in El discurso del cómic (Cátedra, 1988), The Comics’ Speech, the thesis concludes with a visual discourse through this narrative comic architectures: the representation of space by playing with dimensions, the use of resources for architectural rendering, section, plant, etc., to complete the range of graphical strategies presented.
