There are several different standardised and widespread formats to represent emotions. However, there is no standard semantic model yet. This paper presents a new ontology, called Onyx, that aims to become such a standard while adding concepts from the latest Semantic Web models. In particular, the ontology focuses on the representation of Emotion Analysis results. But the model is abstract and inherits from previous standards and formats. It can thus be used as a reference representation of emotions in any future application or ontology. To prove this, we have translated resources from EmotionML representation to Onyx. We also present several ways in which developers could benefit from using this ontology instead of an ad-hoc presentation. Our ultimate goal is to foster the use of semantic technologies for emotion Analysis while following the Linked Data ideals.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the use of knowledge models to formulate general applications. First, the paper presents the recent evolution of the software field where increasing attention is paid to conceptual modeling. Then, the current state of knowledge modeling techniques is described where increased reliability is available through the modern knowledge acquisition techniques and supporting tools. The KSM (Knowledge Structure Manager) tool is described next. First, the concept of knowledge area is introduced as a building block where methods to perform a collection of tasks are included together with the bodies of knowledge providing the basic methods to perform the basic tasks. Then, the CONCEL language to define vocabularies of domains and the LINK language for methods formulation are introduced. Finally, the object oriented implementation of a knowledge area is described and a general methodology for application design and maintenance supported by KSM is proposed. To illustrate the concepts and methods, an example of system for intelligent traffic management in a road network is described. This example is followed by a proposal of generalization for reuse of the resulting architecture. Finally, some concluding comments are proposed about the feasibility of using the knowledge modeling tools and methods for general application design.

In this paper we want to point out, by means of a case study, the importance of incorporating some knowledge engineering techniques to the processes of software engineering. Precisely, we are referring to the knowledge eduction techniques. We know the difficulty of requirements acquisition and its importance to minimise the risks of a software project, both in the development phase and in the maintenance phase. To capture the functional requirements use cases are generally used. However, as we will show in this paper, this technique is insufficient when the problem domain knowledge is only in the "experts? mind". In this situation, the combination of the use case with eduction techniques, in every development phase, will let us to discover the correct requirements.

ABSTRACT The new stage in the evolution of the Web (the Live Web or Evented Web) puts lots of social data-streams at the service of users, who no longer browse static web pages but interact with applications that present them contextual and relevant experiences. Given that each user is a potential source of events, a typical user often gets overwhelmed. To deal with that huge amount of data, multiple automation tools have emerged, covering from simple social media managers or notification aggregators to complex CRMs or smart-home Hub/Apps. As a downside, they cannot tailor to the needs of every single user. As a natural response to this downside, Task Automation Services broke in the Internet. They may be seen as a new model of mash-up technology for combining social streams, services and connected devices from an end-user perspective: end-users are empowered to connect those stream however they want, designing the automations they need. The numbers of those platforms that appeared early on shot up, and as a consequence the amount of platforms following this approach is growing fast. Being a novel field, this thesis aims to shed light on it, presenting and exemplifying the main characteristics of Task Automation Services, describing their components, and identifying several dimensions to classify them. This thesis coins the term Task Automation Services (TAS) by providing a formal definition of them, their components (called channels), as well a TAS reference architecture. There is also a lack of tools for describing automation services and automations rules. In this regard, this thesis proposes a theoretical common model of TAS and formalizes it as the EWE ontology This model enables to compare channels and automations from different TASs, which has a high impact in interoperability; and enhances automations providing a mechanism to reason over external sources such as Linked Open Data. Based on this model, a dataset of components of TAS was built, harvesting data from the web sites of actual TASs. Going a step further towards this common model, an algorithm for categorizing them was designed, enabling their discovery across different TAS. Thus, the main contributions of the thesis are: i) surveying the state of the art on task automation and coining the term Task Automation Service; ii) providing a semantic common model for describing TAS components and automations; iii) populating a categorized dataset of TAS components, used to learn ontologies of particular domains from the TAS perspective; and iv) designing an agent architecture for assisting users in setting up automations, that is aware of their context and acts in consequence.

ABSTRACT. This project involves the creation of a Graphic User Interface (GUI) in the Matlab environment which creates a graphic representation of the HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function) database. The head transfer function is a very useful tool in the study of the capacity of human beings to perceive their sound environment, as well as their ability to localise sound sources in the area surrounding them. The binaural HRTF (terminology which refers to the HRTF group of the left and right ear) in itself possesses information of special interest seeing that the differences between the HRTF of each ear admits the information that our system of hearing uses in the perception of each sound field. For this reason, the functionality of the graphic interface created presents great benefits within the study of this field. The interaural differences are characterised in space and in time, varying depending on the frequency. By means of Fourier's transformed inverse of the HRTF signal, the response to the head impulse is obtained, in other words, the HRIR (Head-Related Impulse Response). This, as well as having a great use in the creation of software or surround sound generating devices, is used to obtain ITD differences (Interaural Time Difference) and ILD (Interaural Time Difference), commonly named “spatial localisation parameters”. The HRTF database contains the binaural information of different points of sound source location, forming a network of spherical coordinates which surround the subject's head. This network, according to the measures carried out in the anechoic chamber at the EUITT (School of Telecommunications Engineering) gives a precision in elevation of 10º and in azimuth of 5º. The receivers are two microphones placed on the acoustic mannequin called HATS (Hats and Torso Simulator) Brüel&Kjaer model 4100D. This has the physical characteristics which affect the perception of the surroundings which are the forms of the auricle (pinna), the head, neck and human torso. It will be necessary to make interpolation calculations for all those points which are not contained the HRTF database. This process is extremely important not only to strengthen the database's capacity but also for its usefulness in making comparisons with other databases that exist in the study of this field. The graphic user interface is conceived for a simple, clear and predictable use which is also interactive. Since the first outline of the program, its philosophy has been clear, based on the needs of a user who requires a practical tool with an intuitive use. Its design with only one window unites not only the components which obtain data but also those which make the graphic representation of the HRTFs possible, the hrir and the ITD and ILD spatial location parameters. The user will be able to alternate the graphic representations at the same time as entering the point coordinates that they wish to display, defined by phi (elevation) and theta (azimuth). The facet of the interface is what provides the great ease of access and reading of the information displayed on it. In addition, the user can enter values included in the database or values which are intermediate to these. It is, likewise, indicated to the interface the need to carry out the interpolation of these values. The interpolation method is the deliberation of the inverse distance between points. Depending on the values entered by the user, an interpolation of two or four points will be carried out, with these being adjacent to the entered value, whether that is phi or theta. To add versatility to the graphic user interface, the option of generating output files in the form of an image of the graphics displayed has been added. This is so that the user may extract the information that interests them for any phi and theta value. This final project is completed with a research and comparative study essay on the function and application of HRTF databases within the scientific and research framework. It has been possible to collate related information by means of scientific research magazines such as the JAES (Journal of the Audio Engineering Society), the ASA (Acoustical Society of America) as well as the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the “Web of knowledge” amongst others. In addition to carrying out research with these sources, I also opted to use more common sources of information such as Academic Google and the “Ingenio” point of entry to all the electronic resources contained on the university databases. The study generates an expansion in the knowledge of the practical work of the HRTF. The majority of studies focus their efforts on improving the perception of the sound event by means of its simulation in stereo or multichannel listening. With the HRTFs, this is possible by means of analysis and calculation of data as can be the regressions. These are very useful in the prediction of a measure being based on the current information. Another field of special interest is that of the generation of 3D sound. Through HRTF databases it is possible to simulate the binaural signal. Algorithms have been designed which are implemented in DSP devices, in such a way that by means of interaural delays and wavelength differences it is possible to achieve an excellent result of surround sound, without forgetting the importance of the effects of reverberation to achieve a believable effect of surround sound. Due to the computational complexity that this requires, a great many studies agree on the development of more efficient systems which achieve objectives such as the generation of 3D sound in real time.

ABSTRACT. The web we know today is based on documents and hypertext links that relate these documents with each another, without providing consistent information about the contents they represent. It could be said that its a network designed by people to be used by people. The main goal of the last couple of years is to guide this network into a web of knowledge, where information can be automatically processed by machines. This transformation, requires the use of new technologies specially designed for content description such as ontologies. Nowadays, conventional networks are not the only type of networks evolving. The use of sensor networks and the number of sensor devices connected to the Internet is rapidly increasing, making the use the integration of semantic web technologies to this kind of networks completely necessary. The SSN ontology will be used for the development of this Final Degree Dissertation. This ontology was design to semantically describe sensors and the networks theyre part of, allowing a better interaction between devices and the systems that use them. The development carried through this Final Degree Dissertation revolves around this ontology and aims to achieve semiautomatic code generation starting from a system model described based on classes and properties provided by SSN. To reach this goal, de Dissertation will be divided in several parts. First, an analysis about the mentioned ontology will be made. Following this, a simulated sensor system will be described, and finally, the implementation of the applications will take place. One of these applications will automatically generate de interfaces and the other one will graphically represents the devices in the sensor system, making use of the system representation in an OWL file.

Since its inception, Wikipedia has grown to a solid and stable project and turned into a mass collaboration tool that allows the sharing and distribution of knowledge. The wiki approach that basis this initiative promotes the participation and collaboration of users. In addition to visits for browsing its contents, Wikipedia also receives the contributions of users to improve them. In the past, researchers paid attention to different aspects concerning authoring and quality of contents. However, little effort has been made to study the nature of the visits that Wikipedia receives. We conduct such an study using a sample of users' requests provided by the Wikimedia Foundation in the form of Squid log lines. Our sample contains more that 14,000 million requests from users all around the world and directed to all the projects maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation, including different editions of Wikipedia. This papers describes the work made to characterize the traffic directed to Wikipedia and consisting of the requests sent by its users. Our main aim is to obtain a detailed description of its composition in terms of the percentages corresponding to the different types of requests making part of it. The benefits from our work may range from the prediction of traffic peaks to the determination of the kind of resources most often requested, which can be useful for scalability considerations.

DynaLearn (http://www.DynaLearn.eu) develops a cognitive artefact that engages learners in an active learning by modelling process to develop conceptual system knowledge. Learners create external representations using diagrams. The diagrams capture conceptual knowledge using the Garp3 Qualitative Reasoning (QR) formalism [2]. The expressions can be simulated, confronting learners with the logical consequences thereof. To further aid learners, DynaLearn employs a sequence of knowledge representations (Learning Spaces, LS), with increasing complexity in terms of the modelling ingredients a learner can use [1]. An online repository contains QR models created by experts/teachers and learners. The server runs semantic services [4] to generate feedback at the request of learners via the workbench. The feedback is communicated to the learner via a set of virtual characters, each having its own competence [3]. A specific feedback thus incorporates three aspects: content, character appearance, and a didactic setting (e.g. Quiz mode). In the interactive event we will demonstrate the latest achievements of the DynaLearn project. First, the 6 learning spaces for learners to work with. Second, the generation of feedback relevant to the individual needs of a learner using Semantic Web technology. Third, the verbalization of the feedback via different animated virtual characters, notably: Basic help, Critic, Recommender, Quizmaster & Teachable agen

In parallel to the effort of creating Open Linked Data for the World Wide Web there is a number of projects aimed for developing the same technologies but in the context of their usage in closed environments such as private enterprises. In the paper, we present results of research on interlinking structured data for use in Idea Management Systems - a still rare breed of knowledge management systems dedicated to innovation management. In our study, we show the process of extending an ontology that initially covers only the Idea Management System structure towards the concept of linking with distributed enterprise data and public data using Semantic Web technologies. Furthermore we point out how the established links can help to solve the key problems of contemporary Idea Management Systems

In this introductory chapter we put in context and give a brief outline of the work that we thoroughly present in the rest of the dissertation. We consider this work divided in two main parts. The first part is the Firenze Framework, a knowledge level description framework rich enough to express the semantics required for describing both semantic Web services and semantic Grid services. We start by defining what the Semantic Grid is and its relation with the Semantic Web; and the possibility of their convergence since both initiatives have become mainly service-oriented. We also introduce the main motivators of the creation of this framework, one is to provide a valid description framework that works at knowledge level; the other to provide a description framework that takes into account the characteristics of Grid services in order to be able to describe them properly. The other part of the dissertation is devoted to Vega, an event-driven architecture that, by means of proposed knowledge level description framework, is able to achieve high scale provisioning of knowledge-intensive services. In this introductory chapter we portrait the anatomy of a generic event-driven architecture, and we briefly enumerate their main characteristics, which are the reason that make them our choice.

This document presents an innovative, formal educational initiative that is aimed at enhancing the development of engineering students’ specific competences when studying Project Management (PM) subject. The framework of the experience combines (1) theoretical concepts, (2) the development of a real-case project carried out by multidisciplinary groups of three different universities, (3) the use of software web 2.0 tools and (4) group and individual assignments of students that play different roles (project managers and team members). Under this scenario, the study focuses on monitoring the communication competence in the ever growing PM virtual environment. Factors such as corporal language, technical means, stage, and PM specific vocabulary among others have been considered in order to assess the students’ performance on this issue. As a main contribution, the paper introduces an ad-hoc rubric that, based on previous investigations, has been adapted and tested for the first time to this new and specific context. Additionally, the research conducted has provided some interesting findings that suggest further actions to improve and better define future rubrics, oriented to communication or even other competences. As specific PM subject concerns, it has been detected that students playing the role of Project Managers strengthen their competences more than those ones that play the role of Team Members. It has also been detected that students have more difficulty assimilating concepts related to risk and quality management. However those concepts related with scope, time or cost areas of knowledge have been better assimilated by the students.

Nowadays, developers of web application mashups face a sheer overwhelming variety and pluralism of web services. Therefore, choosing appropriate web services to achieve specific goals requires a certain amount of knowledge as well as expertise. In order to support users in choosing appropriate web services it is not only important to match their search criteria to a dataset of possible choices but also to rank the results according to their relevance, thus minimizing the time it takes for taking such a choice. Therefore, we investigated six ranking approaches in an empirical manner and compared them to each other. Moreover, we have had a look on how one can combine those ranking algorithms linearly in order to maximize the quality of their outputs.

This paper describes a numerical study on the instability of a brace-type seismic damper based on the out of plane yielding of the web of wide-flange steel sections (Web Plastifying Damper, WPD)The damper is intended to be installed in a framed structure as a standard diagonal brace. Under lateral forces, the damper is subjected to high axial forces, therefore its buckling instability is a matter of concern. Several finite element models representing WPDs with different axial stiffness and various geometries of their components were developed and analyzed taking into account both material and geometrical nonlinearities. The influence of several parameters defining the WPD in the load-displacement curve was examined. Furthermore, a simplified model to predict the buckling load is proposed.

The worldwide "hyper-connection" of any object around us is the challenge that promises to cover the paradigm of the Internet of Things. If the Internet has colonized the daily life of more than 2000 million1 people around the globe, the Internet of Things faces of connecting more than 100000 million2 "things" by 2020. The underlying Internet of Things’ technologies are the cornerstone that promises to solve interrelated global problems such as exponential population growth, energy management in cities, and environmental sustainability in the average and long term. On the one hand, this Project has the goal of knowledge acquisition about prototyping technologies available in the market for the Internet of Things. On the other hand, the Project focuses on the development of a system for devices management within a Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network to offer some services accessible from the Internet. To accomplish the objectives, the Project will begin with a detailed analysis of various “open source” hardware platforms to encourage creative development of applications, and automatically extract information from the environment around them for transmission to external systems. In addition, web platforms that enable mass storage with the philosophy of the Internet of Things will be studied. The project will culminate in the proposal and specification of a service-oriented software architecture for embedded systems that allows communication between devices on the network, and the data transmission to external systems. Furthermore, it abstracts the complexities of hardware to application developers.

In the last decades, neuropsychological theories tend to consider cognitive functions as a result of the whole brainwork and not as individual local areas of its cortex. Studies based on neuroimaging techniques have increased in the last years, promoting an exponential growth of the body of knowledge about relations between cognitive functions and brain structures [1]. However, so fast evolution make complicated to integrate them in verifiable theories and, even more, translated in to cognitive rehabilitation. The aim of this research work is to develop a cognitive process-modeling tool. The purpose of this system is, in the first term, to represent multidimensional data, from structural and functional connectivity, neuroimaging, data from lesion studies and derived data from clinical intervention [2][3]. This will allow to identify consolidated knowledge, hypothesis, experimental designs, new data from ongoing studies and emerging results from clinical interventions. In the second term, we pursuit to use Artificial Intelligence to assist in decision making allowing to advance towards evidence based and personalized treatments in cognitive rehabilitation. This work presents the knowledge base design of the knowledge representation tool. It is compound of two different taxonomies (structure and function) and a set of tags linking both taxonomies at different levels of structural and functional organization. The remainder of the abstract is organized as follows: Section 2 presents the web application used for gathering necessary information for generating the knowledge base, Section 3 describes knowledge base structure and finally Section 4 expounds reached conclusions.
