The project arises from the need to develop improved teaching methodologies in field of the mechanics of continuous media. The objective is to offer the student a learning process to acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge, cognitive skills and the responsibility and autonomy to professional development in this area. Traditionally the teaching of the concepts of these subjects was performed through lectures and laboratory practice. During these lessons the students attitude was usually passive, and therefore their effectiveness was poor. The proposed methodology has already been successfully employed in universities like University Bochum, Germany, University the South Australia and aims to improve the effectiveness of knowledge acquisition through use by the student of a virtual laboratory. This laboratory allows to adapt the curricula and learning techniques to the European Higher Education and improve current learning processes in the University School of Public Works Engineers -EUITOP- of the Technical University of Madrid -UPM-, due there are not laboratories in this specialization. The virtual space is created using a software platform built on OpenSim, manages 3D virtual worlds, and, language LSL -Linden Scripting Language-, which imprints specific powers to objects. The student or user can access this virtual world through their avatar -your character in the virtual world- and can perform practices within the space created for the purpose, at any time, just with computer with internet access and viewfinder. The virtual laboratory has three partitions. The virtual meeting rooms, where the avatar can interact with peers, solve problems and exchange existing documentation in the virtual library. The interactive game room, where the avatar is has to resolve a number of issues in time. And the video room where students can watch instructional videos and receive group lessons. Each audiovisual interactive element is accompanied by explanations framing it within the area of knowledge and enables students to begin to acquire a vocabulary and practice of the profession for which they are being formed. Plane elasticity concepts are introduced from the tension and compression testing of test pieces of steel and concrete. The behavior of reticulated and articulated structures is reinforced by some interactive games and concepts of tension, compression, local and global buckling will by tests to break articulated structures. Pure bending concepts, simple and composite torsion will be studied by observing a flexible specimen. Earthquake resistant design of buildings will be checked by a laboratory test video.

Negative co-occurrence is a common phenomenon in many signal processing applications. In some cases the signals involved are sparse, and this information can be exploited to recover them. In this paper, we present a sparse learning approach that explicitly takes into account negative co-occurrence. This is achieved by adding a novel penalty term to the LASSO cost function based on the cross-products between the reconstruction coefficients. Although the resulting optimization problem is non-convex, we develop a new and efficient method for solving it based on successive convex approximations. Results on synthetic data, for both complete and overcomplete dictionaries, are provided to validate the proposed approach.

Existe una proliferación de los llamados Smart Products. Ello es debido a que cada vez se apueste más por este tipo de productos tanto en la vida cotidiana como en el sector industrial. Sin embargo el término Smart Product se utiliza con diferentes acepciones en diferentes contextos o dominios de aplicación. La utilización del término con una semántica diferente de la habitual en un contexto puede llevar a problemas serios de compresión. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las diferentes definiciones de Smart Products—Productos Inteligentes, Smart Products en terminología inglesa, ampliamente utilizada—que aparecen en la literatura con el objeto de estudiar los diferentes matices y alcances que ofrecen para valorar si es posible obtener una definición de consenso que satisfaga a todas las partes, y especificarla. Con el fin de poder abarcar definiciones conexas introducimos el concepto Smart Thing—este concepto incluirá aquellas definiciones que puedan estar relacionadas con los Smart Products, como es el caso de los Intelligent Products, Smart Objects, Intelligent Systems, Intelligent Object. Para poder analizar las diferentes definiciones existentes en la literatura existente realizamos una Revisión Sistemática de la Literatura. El enfoque de Computación Autonómica—Autonomic Computing—tiene varios aspectos en común con Smart Products. Por ello una vez analizadas las diferentes definiciones existentes en la literatura hemos procedido a estudiar los puntos en común que tienen con Autonomic Computing, con el fin de valorar si Autonomic Computing es un enfoque adecuado en el que nos podamos apoyar para especificar, y diseñar Smart Products.

Although tree ferns are an important component of temperate and tropical forests, very little is known about their ecology. Their peculiar biology (e.g., dispersal by spores and two-phase life cycle) makes it difficult to extrapolate current knowledge on the ecology of other tree species to tree ferns. In this paper, we studied the effects of negative density dependence (NDD) and environmental heterogeneity on populations of two abundant tree fern species, Cyathea caracasana and Alsophila engelii, and how these effects change across a successional gradient. Species patterns harbor information on processes such as competition that can be easily revealed using point pattern analysis techniques. However, its detection may be difficult due to the confounded effects of habitat heterogeneity. Here, we mapped three forest plots along a successional gradient in the montane forests of Southern Ecuador. We employed homogeneous and inhomogeneous K and pair correlation functions to quantify the change in the spatial pattern of different size classes and a case-control design to study associations between juvenile and adult tree ferns. Using spatial estimates of the biomass of four functional tree types (short- and long-lived pioneer, shade- and partial shade-tolerant) as covariates, we fitted heterogeneous Poisson models to the point pattern of juvenile and adult tree ferns and explored the existence of habitat dependencies on these patterns. Our study revealed NDD effects for C. caracasana and strong environmental filtering underlying the pattern of A. engelii. We found that adult and juvenile populations of both species responded differently to habitat heterogeneity and in most cases this heterogeneity was associated with the spatial distribution of biomass of the four functional tree types. These findings show the effectiveness of factoring out environmental heterogeneity to avoid confounding factors when studying NDD and demonstrate the usefulness of covariate maps derived from mapped communities.
