Real time Tritium concentrations in air in two chemical forms, HT and HTO, coming from an ITER-like fusion reactor as source were coupled the European Centre Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) numerical model with the Lagrangian Atmospheric-particle dispersion model FLEXPART. This tool was analyzed in nominal tritium discharge operational reference and selected incidental conditions affecting the Western Mediterranean Basin during 45 days during summer 2010 together with surface “wind observations” or weather data based in real hourly observations of wind direction and velocity providing a real approximation of the tritium behavior after the release to the atmosphere from a fusion reactor. From comparison with NORMTRI - a code using climatologically sequences as input - over the same area, the real time results have demonstrated an apparent overestimation of the corresponding climatologically sequence of Tritium concentrations in air outputs, at several distances from the reactor. For this purpose two development patterns were established. The first one was following a cyclonic circulation over the Mediterranean Sea and the second one was based on the plume delivered over the Interior of the Iberian Peninsula and Continental Europe by another stabilized circulation corresponding to a High Pressure System. One of the important remaining activities defined then, was the qualification tool. In order to validate the model of ECMWF/FLEXPART we have developed of a new complete data base of tritium concentrations for the months from November 2010 to March 2011 and defined a new set of four patterns of HT transport in air, in each case using real boundary conditions: stationary to the North, stationary to the South, fast and very fast displacement. Finally the differences corresponding to those four early patterns (each one in assessments 1 and 2) has been analyzed in terms of the tuning of safety related issues and taking into account the primary phase o- - f tritium modeling, from its discharge to the atmosphere to the deposition on the ground, will affect to the complete tritium environmental pathway altering the chronic dose by absorption, reemission and ingestion both from elemental tritium, HT and from the oxide of tritium, HTO

Cable-stayed bridges represent one of the most developed structural typologies being used recently as it has a span range that can extend beyond 1000m. Furthermore, when it comes to bridges that span to a medium range we could say their shape and resistance are features that make this kind of bridge suitable for many different applications. Moreover, due to this type of bridge being used newly more extensively it has allowed for a better understanding of the theoretical knowledge of the various technical aspects both at a structural and simulation level in order to improve the constructions process of this type of bridge. Knowledge and development of these bridges can be attributed to the increasing apprehension of I.T. skills and the development of more advanced computer software with regards to structural calculations. The latter can aide more demanding analysis that was previously difficult to ascertain Defining features of this type of structure, besides its hyper static attributes, is the importance of the construction process, namely the cable tensioning process, which determines whether the requirements set out in the construction process will be met once the bridge is finished and traffic loads are applied. This is why much research has been conducted into the optimization of the axial forces to be applied to the cables. Focus, of part of this research, goes into the possible influences of random geometrical and mechanical parametres on the forces applied to the structure. We have therefore proceeded to develop research in which we have tried to gain more in depth knowledge which considers these aspects so that we can validate the hypothesis which are currently established in the regulations Firstly, the purpose of this thesis is to provide a new method to introduce random errors on the forces or deformations of cable tensioning so that this technique can be extended to various models of cable-staying bridges. It is important to highlight that this thesis has focused on cable-stayed bridges built through the balanced cantilever method and with concrete girders and considering there are many actual bridges with these characteristics the research has focused on a specific yet extensively applied method.

Continuous and long-pulse lasers have been used for the forming of metal sheets in macroscopic mechanical applications. However, for the manufacturing of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), the use of ns laser pulses provides a suitable parameter matching over an important range of sheet components that, preserving the short interaction time scale required for the predominantly mechanical (shock) induction of deformation residual stresses, allows for the successful processing of components in a medium range of miniaturization without appreciable thermal deformation.. In the present paper, the physics of laser shock microforming and the influence of the different experimental parameters on the net bending angle are presented.

The environmental impact of systems managing large (kg) tritium amount represents a public scrutiny issue for the next coming fusion facilities as ITER and DEMO. Furthermore, potentially new dose limits imposed by international regulations (ICRP) shall impact next coming devices designs and the overall costs of fusion technology deployment. Refined environmental tritium dose impact assessment schemes are then overwhelming. Detailed assessments can be procured from the knowledge of the real boundary conditions of the primary tritium discharge phase into atmosphere (low levels) and into soils. Lagrangian dispersion models using real-time meteorological and topographic data provide a strong refinement. Advance simulation tools are being developed in this sense. The tool integrates a numerical model output records from European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) with a lagrangian atmospheric dispersion model (FLEXPART). The composite model ECMWF/FLEXTRA results can be coupled with tritium dose secondary phase pathway assessment tools. Nominal tritium discharge operational reference and selected incidental ITER-like plant systems tritium form source terms have been assumed. The realtime daily data and mesh-refined records together with lagrangian dispersion model approach provide accurate results for doses to population by inhalation or ingestion in the secondary phase

In volcanic islands, the rainfall regime and its torrential nature, together with the steep slopes and the soil types present are considered to be some of the main factors affecting forest hydrology and soil conservation. In such environments, rain regime is generally irregular and characterized by short and intense rainfalls, which could cause destructive flows at times, followed by long periods of rain absence. The volcanic nature of these islands have as a direct resultant steep slopes which influences the runoff volume and speed, as well as the amount of topsoil susceptible to be detached and transported downstream. The soil type also affects the susceptibility to erosion processes. Andisols are the most typical soil on volcanic islands. Their particularities derive their mineral constituents, called short-range-order products, which provide these soils with an increased structural stability, which in turn reduces their susceptibility to erosion. However, the land use changes and the environmental factors such as rain regime and steep slopes may be determinant factor in destabilizing these soils and ultimately a cause for soil erosion and runoffs, which become a threat to the population downstream. Green barriers have been traditionally used to prevent or reduce these processes, also to enhance the dew effect and the fog water collection, and as a firebreak which acts as a barrier to slow or stop the progress of a wildfire. Wooded species present and subsequently their performance have a major influence on their effectiveness. The use of this natural erosion and fire control methods on volcanic islands is discussed in this paper.

Continuous and long-pulse lasers have been extensively used for the forming of metal sheets for macroscopic mechanical applications. However, for the manufacturing of Micro-Mechanical Systems (MMS), the applicability of such type of lasers is limited by the long relaxation time of the thermal fields responsible for the forming phenomena. As a consequence, the final sheet deformation state is attained only after a certain time, what makes the generated internal residual stress fields more dependent on ambient conditions and might difficult the subsequent assembly process. The use of short pulse (ns) lasers provides a suitable parameter matching for the laser forming of an important range of sheet components used in MEMS. The short interaction time scale required for the predominantly mechanic (shock) induction of deformation residual stresses allows the successful processing of components in a medium range of miniaturization (particularly important according to its frequent use in such systems). In the present paper, Laser Shock Micro-Forming (LSμF) is presented as an emerging technique for Microsystems parts shaping and adjustment along with a discussion on its physical foundations and practical implementation possibilities developed by the authors.

Sequencing of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) processes related to their order of implementation is one of the pending issues in the ITIL handbooks. Other frameworks and process models related to service management (e.g., COBIT, COSO and CMMI-SVC) are quite well described in the literature and their handbooks. However, the identifi cation of the fi rst process to be implemented has not been deeply analysed in the previous frameworks and models, and it is also a complex question to answer for organizations, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Moreover, SMEs are the organizations that have the largest presence in the world economy; offi cial data of General Business Directory, show that their range of presence in different countries around the world is between 93% and 99%, and the average of employment contribution is around 60%. Consequently, the improvement of information technology service management is of vital importance to accomplish in this type of enterprises. This research has focused on two surveys that aim at helping SMEs to select the ITIL process by which starting the implementation of ITIL. In the fi rst survey, data were gathered through a questionnaire to SMEs registered in the region of Madrid. The second survey obtained data from experts and enterprises in countries as Spain, Ecuador, Chile, Luxembourg, Colombia, Norway, El Salvador, and Venezuela. Finally, the results of both surveys show that the tendency for starting an ITIL implementation in SMEs points to one of the processes included in the Service Operation.

When a firm decides to implement ERP softwares, the resulting consequences can pervade all levels, includ- ing organization, process, control and available information. Therefore, the first decision to be made is which ERP solution must be adopted from a wide range of offers and vendors. To this end, this paper describes a methodology based on multi-criteria factors that directly affects the process to help managers make this de- cision. This methodology has been applied to a medium-size company in the Spanish metal transformation sector which is interested in updating its IT capabilities in order to obtain greater control of and better infor- mation about business, thus achieving a competitive advantage. The paper proposes a decision matrix which takes into account all critical factors in ERP selection.

A method to analyze parabolic reflectors with arbitrary piecewise rim is presented in this communication. This kind of reflectors, when operating as collimators in compact range facilities, needs to be large in terms of wavelength. Their analysis is very inefficient, when it is carried out with fullwave/MoM techniques, and it is not very appropriate for designing with PO techniques. Also, fast GO formulations do not offer enough accuracy to reach performance results. The proposed algorithm is based on a GO-PWS hybrid scheme, using analytical as well as non-analytical formulations. On one side, an analytical treatment of the polygonal rim reflectors is carried out. On the other side, non-analytical calculi are based on efficient operations, such as M2 order 2-dimensional FFT. A combination of these two techniques in the algorithm ensures real ad-hoc design capabilities, reached through analysis speedup. The purpose of the algorithm is to obtain an optimal conformal serrated-edge reflector design through the analysis of the field quality within the quiet zone that it is able to generate in its forward half space.

An EMI filter for a three-phase buck-type medium power pulse-width modulation rectifier is designed. This filter considers differential mode noise and complies with MIL-STD- 461E for the frequency range of 10kHz to 10MHz. In industrial applications, the frequency range of the standard starts at 150kHz and the designer typically uses a switching frequency of 28kHz because the fifth harmonic is out of the range. This approach is not valid for aircraft applications. In order to design the switching frequency in aircraft applications, the power losses in the semiconductors and the weight of the reactive components should be considered. The proposed design is based on a harmonic analysis of the rectifier input current and an analytical study of the input filter. The classical industrial design does not consider the inductive effect in the filter design because the grid frequency is 50/60Hz. However, in the aircraft applications, the grid frequency is 400Hz and the inductance cannot be neglected. The proposed design considers the inductance and the capacitance effect of the filter in order to obtain unitary power factor at full power. In the optimization process, several filters are designed for different switching frequencies of the converter. In addition, designs from single to five stages are considered. The power losses of the converter plus the EMI filter are estimated at these switching frequencies. Considering overall losses and minimal filter volume, the optimal switching frequency is selected

Abstract This thesis aims to the study and analysis of techniques and models, in order to obtain biophysical parameters and environmental indicators in an automated way, using high temporal resolution satellite data. Firstly we have reviewed the main Earth Observation Programs, paying attention to those that provide high temporal resolution. Also have reviewed the methodologies and process flow diagrams in order to obtain quantitative parameters and qualitative documents, relating to various aspects of land cover, according to their adaptability to the peculiarities of the data. In the next stage, a model which allows obtaining environmental parameters, has been proposed. This structure integrates information from space sensors and ancillary data sources, using the methodologies presented in previous sections that permits the parameters calculation in an efficient and automated way. After this review of methodologies and the proposal of the model, we proceeded to carry out experiments, in order to check the behavior of the structure in real situations. From this, we derive the accuracy of the model. The sensors used in this work have been MODIS, which is a high temporal resolution sensor, and Thematic Mapper (TM), which is a medium spatial resolution instrument. This choice was motivated because they are reference sensors in environmental studies, as well as for the duration of their corresponding missions of data logging, and whose continuity seems assured. Among the experiments, we tested a methodology that allows the integration of data from cited sensors, we discussed a proposal for a temporal interpolation method for obtaining synthetic images with spatial resolution of TM (30 m) and temporal of MODIS (1 day), extending the application range of this one. Furthermore, we have analyzed some of the factors that affect the recorded data, such as the relative position of the satellite with the ground point, and the rainfall events, which alter the obtained results. On the other hand, we have proven the validity of the proposed model in the study of the organic contamination in inland water bodies. Finally, we have demonstrated a good performance of the proposed model in all cases tested, as well as its flexibility and adaptability.

Abstract This manuscript deals with the growth and characterization of Al(Ga)N/GaN heterostructures and GaN ordered nanocolumns, and their application in chemical sensors. The growth technique has been the plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). In the case of Al(Ga)N/GaN heterostructures, barriers of different thickness and composition, from AlN (5 nm) to AlGaN (35 nm) have been grown. Besides the basic morphological, structural and electrical characterization of the layers, HEMT devices have been fabricated based on these layers. The best electrical characteristics (larger carriers concentration and mobility in the two dimensional electron gas) are those in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures with a medium thickness (around 20 nm). However, one of the goals of this Thesis has been to verify the advantages that sensors based on AlN/GaN (thickness around 7 nm) have compared to standard AlGaN/GaN, because the conduction channel to be modulated by chemical changes is closer to the sensitive area. In this way, HEMT devices have been used as chemical pH sensors (ISFETs), and the higher sensitivity (conductance change related to pH changes, Ids/pH) of AlN/GaN based sensors has been proved. The higher sensibility is even more obvious in application without reference electrode. Similar ISFETs devices have been fabricated based on InN compact layers. These devices show a poor stability, but its surface sensitivity to pH (Vgs/pH) and its sensibility (Ids/pH) yield values between the corresponding ones of AlN/GaN and AlGaN/GaN heterostructures. In order to a further comparison between Al(Ga)N/GaN based devices, ISFETs with smaller sensitive area (35 x 35 m2), similar to the ones used in cellular activity record, were fabricated and characterized. When the devices are subjected to a voltage pulse through the sensitive area, the response of AlN based devices shows lower noise than the ones based on AlGaN. The noise in the current of such a AlN based device, where the encapsulation has not been optimized, is as low as 8.9 nA (rms value), and the equivalent noise to the surface potential is 38.7 V. These values are lower than the found in typical devices used for cellular activity recording (based on Si), and in the range of the best published results on AlGaN/GaN. From the point of view of the electrochemical characterization of GaN and InN surfaces, their isoelectric point has been experimentally determined. Such a value is the first time reported for GaN and InN surfaces. These values are determined by “streaming potential”, being pH 4.4 and 4, respectively. Isoelectric point value is an important characteristic in sensors, electrostatic immobilization or in colloidal lithography. In particular, colloidal lithography has been optimized in this Thesis for GaN surfaces, and applied in the last part of experimental results (i.e. ordered growth). The last block of this Thesis is focused on the selective area growth of GaN nanocolumns by MBE, using Ti masks decorated with nanoholes. The effect of the different growth parameters (Ga and N fluxes, growth temperature and mask design) is studied, in particular their impact in the selectivity and in the morphology of the nanocolumns. Selective area growth has been successful performed on GaN templates with different orientation or polarity; GaN(0001)/sapphire, GaN(0001)/AlN/Si, GaN(000- 1)/Si and GaN(11-20)/sapphire. Ordered nanocolumns exhibit a high crystal quality, and a higher thermal stability (lower thermal decomposition) than the compact layers of the same material. Ordered nanocolumns based on III nitrides have a clear application in optoelectronics, mainly for white light nanoemitters. However, this Thesis proposes them as an alternative to compact layers and self-assembled nanocolumns in sensor applications. Self-assembled GaN nanocolumns are very appealing for sensor applications, due to their large surface/volume ratio. However, their large dispersion in heights and diameters are a problem in terms of processing and operation of real devices. In this aspect, ordered nanocolumns are more robust and homogeneous, keeping the large surface/volume ratio. As first experimental evidence of their sensor capabilities, ordered nanocolumns have been studied regarding their photoluminiscence on air and vacuum ambient. A big drop in the intensity is observed when the nanocolumns are exposed to air (probably because of the oxygen photo-adsortion), as was already reported in the case of self-assembled nanocolumns. This opens the way to future sensors based on ordered III nitrides nanocolumns.

A method is presented to construct computationally efficient reduced-order models (ROMs) of three-dimensional aerodynamic flows around commercial aircraft components. The method is based on the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of a set of steady snapshots, which are calculated using an industrial solver based on some Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The POD-mode amplitudes are calculated by minimizing a residual defined from the Euler equations, even though the snapshots themselves are calculated from viscous equations. This makes the ROM independent of the peculiarities of the solver used to calculate the snapshots. Also, both the POD modes and the residual are calculated using points in the computational mesh that are concentrated in a close vicinity of the aircraft, which constitute a much smaller number than the total number of mesh points. Despite these simplifications, the method provides quite good approximations of the flow variables distributions in the whole computational domain, including the boundary layer attached to the aircraft surface and the wake. Thus, the method is both robust and computationally efficient, which is checked considering the aerodynamic flow around a horizontal tail plane, in the transonic range 0.4?Mach number?0.8, ?3°?angle of attack?3°.
