ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the offensive performance of elite handball teams when considering handball as a complex non-linear dynamical system. The time-dependent dynamic approach was adopted to assess teams’ performance during the game. The overall sample comprised the 240 games played in the season 2011-2012 of men’s Spanish Professional Handball League (ASOBAL League). In the subsequent analyses, only close games (final goal-difference ≤ 5; n = 142) were considered. Match status, game location, quality of opposition, and game period situational variables were incorporated into the analysis. Three studies composed the core of the thesis. In the first study, we analyzed the game-scoring coordination between the time series representing the scoring processes of the two opposing teams throughout the game. Autocorrelation, cross-correlation, double moving average, and Hilbert transform were used for analysis. The scoring processes of the teams presented a high consistency across all the games as well as strong in-phase modes of coordination in all the game contexts. The only differences were found when controlling for the game period. The coordination in the scoring processes of the teams was significantly lower for the 1st and 2nd period (0–10 min and 10–20 min), showing a clear increasing coordination behavior as the game progressed. This suggests that the first 20 minutes are those that break the game-scoring. In the second study, we analyzed the temporal effects (immediate effect, short-term effect, and medium-term effect) of team timeouts on teams’ scoring performance. Multiple linear regression models were used for the analysis. The results showed increments of 0.59, 1.40 and 1.85 goals for the periods within the first, third and fifth timeout ball possessions for the teams that requested the timeout. Conversely, significant negative effects on goals scored were found for the opponent teams, with decrements of 0.59, 1.43 and 2.04 goals for the same periods, respectively. The influence of situational variables on the scoring performance was only registered in certain game periods. Finally, in the third study, we analyzed the players’ exclusions temporal effects on teams’ scoring performance, for the teams that suffer the exclusion (numerical inferiority) and for the opponents (numerical superiority). Multiple linear regression models were used for the analysis. The results showed significant negative effects on the number of goals scored for the teams with one less player, with decrements of 0.25, 0.40, 0.61, 0.62, and 0.57 goals for the periods within the previous and post one, two, three, four and five minutes of play. For the opponent teams, the results showed positive effects, with increments of the same magnitude in the same game periods. This trend was not affected by match status, game location, quality of opposition, or game period. The scoring increments were smaller than might be expected from a 2-minute numerical playing superiority. Psychological theories such as choking under pressure situations where good performance is expected could contribute to explain this finding. The final chapters of the thesis enumerate the main conclusions and underline the main practical applications that arise from the three studies. Lastly, limitations and future research directions are described.

Overhead rigid conductor arrangements for current collection for railway traction have some advantages compared to other, more conventional, energy supply systems. They are simple, robust and easily maintained, not to mention their flexibility as to the required height for installation, which makes them particularly suitable for use in subway infrastructures. Nevertheless, due to the increasing speeds of new vehicles running on modern subway lines, a more efficient design is required for this kind of system. In this paper, the authors present a dynamic analysis of overhead conductor rail systems focused on the design of a new conductor profile with a dynamic behaviour superior to that of the system currently in use. This means that either an increase in running speed can be attained, which at present does not exceed 110 km/h, or an increase in the distance between the rigid catenary supports with the ensuing saving in installation costs. This study has been carried out using simulation techniques. The ANSYS programme has been used for the finite element modelling and the SIMPACK programme for the elastic multibody systems analysis.

Systems Engineering (SE in the following) has not received much attention as a subject matter in engineering curricula. There are several dozens of universities around the world offering programs (most of them at the graduate level) on systems science and engineering. However, SE is, per se, rarely found among the courses offered by engineering schools. This observation does not strictly mean that systems concepts be left apart. For example, it is usual to find specialized courses for systems of some particular classes (e.g., courses on software systems engineering for computing curricula) or for particular phases of the system life cycle (e.g., courses on systems analysis). Even so, these kinds of courses tend to over-emphasize the importance of specific methodologies and, in consequence, to deviate the attention from the realm of systernness

The problem of conceptualisation is the first step towards the identication of the functional requirements of a system. This article proposes two extensions of well-known object oriented techniques: UER (User-Environment-Responsibility) technique and enhanced CRC (Class-ResponsibilityCollaboration) cards. UER technique consists of (a) looking for the users of systems and describing the ways the system is used; (b) looking for the objects of the environment and describing the possible interactions; and (c) looking for the general requirements or goals of the system, the actions that it should carry out without explicit interaction. The enhanced CRC cards together with the internal use cases technique is used for dening collaborations between agents. These techniques can be easily integrated in UML (Unied Modelling Language) [2], dening the new notation symbols as stereotypes.

Using micropiles in civil engineering has transformed the techniques of stabilization of embankments on the natural or artificial slopes, because although the piles may be the cheapest option, the use of micropiles can reach inaccessible places with lower cost of earthworks, carrying out small work platforms. Machinery used is smaller, lightweight and versatile, including the possibility of manufacturing mortars or cement grouts over distances of several tens of meters of the element to build. However, making a review of the technical documentation available in the engineering field, it was found that systems designed in some cases (micropiles in embankments on the natural slopes, micropiles in vertical cut-off walls, micropiles like "umbrella" in tunnels, etc.) were quite poor or underdeveloped. Premise that concludes the builder has gone ahead (as usually happen in geotechnical engineering) of calculation or theoretical analysis. In the same way it was determined that most of the micropiles are used in underpinning works or as a new foundation solution in conditions of difficult access, in which case the design of micropiles is defined by axial, compressive or tensile loads, considered in regulations as the " Handbook for the design and execution of micropiles in road construction" of the Ministry of Development. The micropiles used to stabilize embankments on the slopes and micropiles act as retaining walls, where they work under shear stress and bending moment, there are not neither reliable systems analysis nor the problem of soil-micropile interaction are properly introduced. Moreover, in many cases, the geotechnical parameters used do not have a proper technical and theoretical basis for what designs may be excessively safe, or the opposite, in most cases. One of the main objectives of this research is to study the behavior of micro piles which are subjected to bending moment and shear stress, as well as other important objectives described in the pertinent section of this thesis. It should be noted that this study has not included the case of quasi-horizontal micropiles working bending moment (as the "umbrella" in tunnels), because it is considered they have a different behavior and calculation, which is outside the scope of this research. It has gone in depth in the study of using micropiles on slopes, presenting real cases of works made, statistics, problems of design and implementation, simplified calculation methods and theoretical modeling in each case, carried out by using FEM (Finite Element Method) Code Plaxis 2D. To accomplish the objectives of this research, It has been started with the development of the "state of the art" which stipulate types, applications, characteristics and calculation of micropiles that are commonly used. In order to study the problem in a real geotechnical field, it has been selected a Spanish zone of action, this being Andalusia, in which it has been used in a very important way, the technique of micropiles especially in embankments stability on natural slopes. From there, it has made a study of the geotechnical properties of the materials (mainly very soft soils and rocks) that are found in this geographical area, which has been mainly a bibliographic study or from the experience in the area of the Director of this thesis. It has been set orders of magnitude of the geotechnical parameters from analyzing made, especially the cohesion and angle of internal friction (also apparent deformation module or a side reaction module equivalent) for various typical Andalusian ground. In order to determine the effect of the implementation of a micropile on the ground (real average volume of micropile once carried out, effect of the pressure applied on the properties of the surrounding soil, etc.) it has conducted a survey among various skilled companies in the technique of micropiles, in order to control injection volumes and pressures applied, depending on the deformability of surrounding terrain such micropiles, whereby it has been possible to define a bending stiffness and the definition and characteristics of a crown land "improved" achieved by introducing the slurry and the effect of the pressure around the micropile. With the previous premises and from the geotechnical parameters determined for the Andalusian terrain, we proceeded to study the stability of embankments resting on batters on the slope, using FEM Code Plaxis 2D. In the fifth chapter "Simulation of the behavior of micropiles stabilizing embankments", there were several different numerical simulations. To begin the problem was simplified simulating similar to some real in which it was known that the embankments had reached their limit situation (for which information of movements measured with inclinometers were available), from there the simulation of instability is initiated to set the value of the shear strength parameters of the ground (by a retrospective analysis or back-analysis) checking these values were similar to those deduced from the bibliographical study Then micropiles have been introduced along the roadside and its behavior was analyzed as well as the slope of embankment (once micropiles were built ), in order to establish the basis for its design. In this way and taking the different geotechnical parameters for the Andalusian terrain, three real cases (in Granada, Malaga and Ceuta) were simulated by comparing the results of these numerical simulations with the results of real field measurements (ground displacements measured with inclinometers), getting quite consistent information according to registered movements. After the first simulations it has been concluded that after installing the micropiles the most insecure area of the natural slope is the downstream. The failure surface no longer affects the road that protects micropiles. Hence it is inferred that this solution is acceptable and it has been massively applied in Andalusia. Under these conditions, one could say that it is not working properly simulating the bending moment of micropiles (on the failure surface, and that does not cut them), although beam elements are used. Therefore another simulation was performed based on the following hypotheses: − The potentially sliding mass is totally neglected, that is, which is ahead of the outer row of micropiles. − Stratigraphy field is similar to the one considered in the first simulations. − Micropiles barrier is constituted by two inclined elements (one inward and one fill out) with inclination 1 (H): 3 (V). − You can enter the stiffness of the pile cap. − The microlies lines are separated 0.556 m or 1.00 m in the same alignment. − The embedding of the micropiles in the tough substrate can be between 1.5 and 7.0 m. To "annul" the ground that is in front of the micro piles, along the slope, these elements clearly start working, efforts can be inferred shear stress and bending moment which may affect them (upper bound but pretty close to the real) solution. In this new modeling it has been considered both equivalent stiffness coefficient (θ) as the treated soil crown concentric to the micropile. According to the latter, and by comparing these values with real modeling movements on field slopes instrumented with stability problems, it was verified that there is quite a significant similarity between the obtained theoretical values and the measured field in relation to the behavior of micropiles executed in embankments along the natural slope. Finally to complete the analysis of micropiles working in bending conditions, we have studied the case of micropiles arranged vertically, working as discontinued cut-off walls including anchors, applied to a real case in the city of Granada, in the play "Hospital of Our Lady of the Health ". CYPE numeric code, based on the reaction of the ground is simulated spring stiffness Kh or "subgrade" horizontal, introduced in modeling was used as variables for analysis: a) The different measurements obtained in field; b) The thickness of quaternary ground, so that could be determined, was variable, c) The stiffness and the prestress of the anchors. d) The stiffness of the ground through relative values of Kh, collected in the study of soils in Andalusia, particularly in the area of Granada. (previously study of the Andalusia soils) This cut-off wall was implemented with 4 inclinometers (introduced in armor tubes four micropiles) in order to control the horizontal displacements of the retaining wall during the relevant excavations, in order to ensure the safety of the whole. From the developed model calculation, it was found that the value of Kh becomes less important because a large number of anchors levels, with regard to the horizontal deformation of the cut-off wall. On the other hand, the bending moments are quite sensitive to the distance between anchors, the initial voltage value thereof and the value of Kh. This model has also been reproduced reliably displacement values measured in the field and deduce parameters terrain deformability, Kh, with values around half the measured Light Rail in Granada, but visibly higher than deductible of abacuses which can obtain Kh for granular soils with low cohesion (upper Quaternary gravels and Sevilla) such as Abacus Arozamena, because, in our view, to cementing materials in Granada. In short, previous deductions you might think on optimizing the design of micropiles in the works that are expected to perform in Granada, with similar characteristics to the case of the vertical cut-off wall braced through several levels of anchors and in which materials location have a geotechnical behavior similar to those studied, with the consequent economic savings. With all this, it is considered that a significant contribution have been made for the design of future works of micropiles, bending moment and shear stress working in slope stabilization works or excavations.

ABSTRACT A methodology for the evaluation of facade’s constructive solutions for social housing refurbishment, built between the end of the Civil War, and the entry into force of the basic standard NBE-CT-79 on thermal conditions in buildings is proposed. This methodology starts both with the analysis of the current status in dwellings, and with the characterization of rehabilitation’s constructive solutions performance, for the integrated assessment of improvements. The evaluation seeks to assess their impact on the indoor environmental quality, and on reducing the energy demand for thermal conditioning. The methodology is applied to two standard dwellings, that have been monitored in Madrid, with two innovative solutions for energy refurbishment, which have DIT and DITE assessment documents. One incorporates an exterior insulation, and the other incorporates a ventilated facade system. The analysis of the dwellings was made from data collection, testing and detailed study, conducted throughout 2014 and 2015. Analysis of the facade systems was made from controlled trials comparing the results for three types of façade: a standard usual facade common in the construction of this period, and the two innovative solutions mentioned. Based on the diagnosis of housing and systems analysis, the results are used to generate simulation models on which assess the improvements. The study period comprises four decades starting in 1940, at a time with limited technical resources for construction, which coincides with the beginning of growth in big cities, and ends with the incorporation in the 1979 legislation of the façade’s insulation requirements. In the city of Madrid the houses built in this period account for 45% of all households surveyed in 2011. As a “protected action” energy rehabilitation has been incorporated in successive national housing plans, and there are many and very different action plans from the Administration in the field of social housing, both at national and European level. An integrated approach is needed, due to the inclusion of housing in development and urban, territorial and social cohesion. Social housing neighborhoods are part of the built heritage. Sustainability criteria therefore are particularely relevant, since over time they have been built as actors and witnesses of their social, economic, environmental and cultural history. The design and performance of future models is based on the assimilation of this complexity and diversity acquired. On the other hand, the current challenge posed by global warming forces to consider scenarios for adaptation and improvement in these buildings, with particular attention to energy dependence, resource consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. The facade is the most important element of the envelope in the multi-family buildings, being the place where the exchange occurs between the indoor and outdoor environments. Its rehabilitation can improve wellbeing in housing performance, and reduce energy demand to achieve standard comfort conditions. This research that has been done, is part of an open research line on construction and living conditions in buildings.

This article analyses the long-term performance of collective off-grid photovoltaic (PV) systems in rural areas. The use of collective PV systems for the electrification of small medium-size villages in developing countries has increased in the recent years. They are basically set up as stand-alone installations (diesel hybrid or pure PV) with no connection with other electrical grids. Their particular conditions (isolated) and usual installation places (far from commercial/industrial centers) require an autonomous and reliable technology. Different but related factors affect their performance and the energy supply; some of them are strictly technical but others depend on external issues like the solar energy resource and users’ energy and power consumption. The work presented is based on field operation of twelve collective PV installations supplying the electricity to off-grid villages located in the province of Jujuy, Argentina. Five of them have PV generators as unique power source while other seven include the support of diesel groups. Load demand evolution, energy productivity and fuel consumption are analyzed. Besides, energy generation strategies (PV/diesel) are also discussed.

The main objective of this paper is to review the state of the art of residential PV systems in France and Belgium. This is done analyzing the operational data of 10650 PV systems (9657 located in France and 993 in Belgium). Three main questions are posed. How much energy do they produce? What level of performance is associated to their production? Which are the key parameters that most influence their quality? During the year 2010, the PV systems in France have produced a mean annual energy of 1163 kWh/kWp in France and 852 kWh/kWp in Belgium. As a whole, the orientation of PV generators causes energy productions to be some 7% inferior to optimally oriented PV systems. The mean Performance Ratio is 76% in France and 78% in Belgium, and the mean Performance Index is 85% in both countries. On average, the real power of the PV modules falls 4.9% below its corresponding nominal power announced on the manufacturer?s datasheet. A brief analysis by PV modules technology has lead to relevant observations about two technologies in particular. On the one hand, the PV systems equipped with Heterojunction with Intrinsic. Thin layer (HIT) modules show performances higher than average. On the other hand, the systems equipped with Copper Indium (di)Selenide (CIS) modules show a real power that is 16 % lower than their nominal value.

When an automobile passes over a bridge dynamic effects are produced in vehicle and structure. In addition, the bridge itself moves when exposed to the wind inducing dynamic effects on the vehicle that have to be considered. The main objective of this work is to understand the influence of the different parameters concerning the vehicle, the bridge, the road roughness or the wind in the comfort and safety of the vehicles when crossing bridges. Non linear finite element models are used for structures and multibody dynamic models are employed for vehicles. The interaction between the vehicle and the bridge is considered by contact methods. Road roughness is described by the power spectral density (PSD) proposed by the ISO 8608. To consider that the profiles under right and left wheels are different but not independent, the hypotheses of homogeneity and isotropy are assumed. To generate the wind velocity history along the road the Sandia method is employed. The global problem is solved by means of the finite element method. First the methodology for modelling the interaction is verified in a benchmark. Following, the case of a vehicle running along a rigid road and subjected to the action of the turbulent wind is analyzed and the road roughness is incorporated in a following step. Finally the flexibility of the bridge is added to the model by making the vehicle run over the structure. The application of this methodology will allow to understand the influence of the different parameters in the comfort and safety of road vehicles crossing wind exposed bridges. Those results will help to recommend measures to make the traffic over bridges more reliable without affecting the structural integrity of the viaduct

This paper presents an analysis of the fault tolerance achieved by an autonomous, fully embedded evolvable hardware system, which uses a combination of partial dynamic reconfiguration and an evolutionary algorithm (EA). It demonstrates that the system may self-recover from both transient and cumulative permanent faults. This self-adaptive system, based on a 2D array of 16 (4×4) Processing Elements (PEs), is tested with an image filtering application. Results show that it may properly recover from faults in up to 3 PEs, that is, more than 18% cumulative permanent faults. Two fault models are used for testing purposes, at PE and CLB levels. Two self-healing strategies are also introduced, depending on whether fault diagnosis is available or not. They are based on scrubbing, fitness evaluation, dynamic partial reconfiguration and in-system evolutionary adaptation. Since most of these adaptability features are already available on the system for its normal operation, resource cost for self-healing is very low (only some code additions in the internal microprocessor core)

This article proposes an agent-oriented methodology called MAS-CommonKADS and develops a case study. This methodology extends the knowledge engineering methodology CommonKADSwith techniquesfrom objectoriented and protocol engineering methodologies. The methodology consists of the development of seven models: Agent Model, that describes the characteristics of each agent; Task Model, that describes the tasks that the agents carry out; Expertise Model, that describes the knowledge needed by the agents to achieve their goals; Organisation Model, that describes the structural relationships between agents (software agents and/or human agents); Coordination Model, that describes the dynamic relationships between software agents; Communication Model, that describes the dynamic relationships between human agents and their respective personal assistant software agents; and Design Model, that refines the previous models and determines the most suitable agent architecture for each agent, and the requirements of the agent network.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the sustainability of farm irrigation systems in the Cébalat district in northern Tunisia. It addressed the challenging topic of sustainable agriculture through a bio-economic approach linking a biophysical model to an economic optimisation model. A crop growth simulation model (CropSyst) was used to build a database to determine the relationships between agricultural practices, crop yields and environmental effects (salt accumulation in soil and leaching of nitrates) in a context of high climatic variability. The database was then fed into a recursive stochastic model set for a 10-year plan that allowed analysing the effects of cropping patterns on farm income, salt accumulation and nitrate leaching. We assumed that the long-term sustainability of soil productivity might be in conflict with farm profitability in the short-term. Assuming a discount rate of 10% (for the base scenario), the model closely reproduced the current system and allowed to predict the degradation of soil quality due to long-term salt accumulation. The results showed that there was more accumulation of salt in the soil for the base scenario than for the alternative scenario (discount rate of 0%). This result was induced by applying a higher quantity of water per hectare for the alternative as compared to a base scenario. The results also showed that nitrogen leaching is very low for the two discount rates and all climate scenarios. In conclusion, the results show that the difference in farm income between the alternative and base scenarios increases over time to attain 45% after 10 years.

Idea Management Systems are an implementation of open innovation notion in the Web environment with the use of crowdsourcing techniques. In this area, one of the popular methods for coping with large amounts of data is duplicate de- tection. With our research, we answer a question if there is room to introduce more relationship types and in what degree would this change affect the amount of idea metadata and its diversity. Furthermore, based on hierarchical dependencies between idea relationships and relationship transitivity we propose a number of methods for dataset summarization. To evaluate our hypotheses we annotate idea datasets with new relationships using the contemporary methods of Idea Management Systems to detect idea similarity. Having datasets with relationship annotations at our disposal, we determine if idea features not related to idea topic (e.g. innovation size) have any relation to how annotators perceive types of idea similarity or dissimilarity.
