East Medical

Built in 1925 on the east side of E. University just east of the Old Medical Building. Name changed to Clarence Cook Little Science Building in 1970. Albert Kahn, architect

Hospital

Built 1840. Professors' Houses (East Residence) 1840-1868. University Hospital 1868-1891. Additions in 1877 and after in the form of two parallel wings built out from back of house and several additions onto them. Dental College 1891-1908. Building removed 1908. Chemistry Building

Northeast corner of building. Built in 1856. First chemical laboratory at a state university. Building served medical students and others as both laboratory and classroom. Situated just west and south of the original medical building. Additions made to the one-story building in 1861, 1866, 1868, 1874. In 1880 a two-story addition was added with subsequent additions in 1889 and 1901. Became Economics Building in 1908. Pharmacology occupied north wing 1908-1981. Destroyed by fire Christmas Eve 1981. Rear view of old museum, now Romance Language

William L. Jenney, architect. Originally University Museum, built 1880-1881. Roof replaced 1894. Museum moved in 1928. Housed Department of Romance Languages after 1928. Building razed in 1958. On verso: Photographed in 1887 by A.L. Colton of '89

Commencement. Ferry Field

Regents purchased south ten acres for $3000 in 1890. In 1902 UM received seven acres of land to the north from Dexter M. Ferry; became Ferry Field. In 1904 brick wall constructed on three sides and in 1906 gate and ticket office at northeast corner added (gift of Mr. Ferry). Wooden stands to accommodate 400 put up in 1893; burned in 1895. Rebuilt to seat 800 with later additions to facililties. By 1914, 13,600 accommodated. New stadium built in 1927. Stamp on verso: Ivory Photo

Observatory

The Students' Observatory was erected in 1878. It was located to the south of the Detroit Observatory. Handwritten on verso: Building which housed transit instrument and other instruments which are now in the Angell Hall Domes. On verso: [by A.L. Colton]

General Library

Albert Kahn, architect. In 1918 the old library was demolished and a new front (north facade) was attached to the 1893 stacks and the stacks built in 1916-1917. This was referred to as the (New) General Library until the south stack addition was built in 1967-1970, when the entire library building was named the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library.

Randall Physics Laboratory

Albert Kahn, architect. Built 1924. East University on site of old medical building which was razed in 1914. Also called New Physics and East Physics. Photographer's stamp on verso.

University Hall Auditorium

Jenison, Edward S., architect. University Hall was built in 1872; the auditorium completed in 1873. Prior to this time there was no place on campus where students and faculty could assemble. New opera seats were put in during Christmas 1896 at the same time the new dome was installed. On verso: University Hall -- 133 feet wide, 140 long, seating capacity about 3000. Heating Plant

In 1879 a campus heating plant and coal sheds were built on central campus just east of University Hall. In 1894, a new heating plant was built at the southeast corner of central campus. The University Hall heating plant was used by Buildings and Grounds from 1894-1915. From 1915-1923 the building was used as a fire station. On verso: Photographed in 1887 by A.L. Conton of '89
