Law Building

Jordan & Anderson, architects. Built 1863. Northwest corner of Diagonal on corner of State and North University. Served as Law School for sixty years; contained chapel until 1873 and library until 1883. Addition built in 1893 included tower. Stamps on verso: E. A .Lewis. Photographer and J.C. University Hall Auditorium

Jenison, Edward S., architect. University Hall was built in 1872; the auditorium completed in 1873. Prior to this time there was no place on campus where students and faculty could assemble. New opera seats were put in during Christmas 1896 at the same time the new dome was installed. On verso: University Hall -- 133 feet wide, 140 long, seating capacity about 3000. Heating Plant

In 1879 a campus heating plant and coal sheds were built on central campus just east of University Hall. In 1894, a new heating plant was built at the southeast corner of central campus. The University Hall heating plant was used by Buildings and Grounds from 1894-1915. From 1915-1923 the building was used as a fire station. On verso: Photographed in 1887 by A.L. Conton of '89

Rackham Educational Memorial Building, Detroit, erected 1941

Harley & Ellington, architects. W.E. Wood Co., contractor. Built from July 1940 to January 1942. Built jointly for the Engineering Society of Detroit and the University as an Extension Service facility in Detroit. Funded by the Horace H. and Mary A. Rackham Fund. Sculptures on exterior by Marshall Fredericks.

Law School

York and Sawyer, architects. The Wiliam W. Cook Legal Research Building was completed in 1931, the third of the four buildings William W. Cook gave to form the Law Quadrangle, 1924-1933. In 1955, the original six level stackroom was increased to ten levels. The underground addition designed by Gunnar Birkerts Associates was completed in 1981.
