The annual report on agriculture began in 1837 with a 2-page statement in the Report of the Commissioner of Patents, and formed part of his report (making a separate volume after 1849) until 1862, when the Department of Agriculture was established. The head of the department became a cabinet officer in 1889. No report on agriculture was issued for 1846.
