A precise and rapid method for the volumetric assay of uranium metal has been developed. The method consists of dissolving a weighed sample in an aqueous mixture of hydrochloric, sulfuric, and fluosilicic acids. The resulting uranium solution is titrated without a subsequent reduction step.

Numerous salts were considered for uranium metal annealing baths. Tests on melting point, solubility, corrosion stability, and hydrogen concentration were conducted on the salts which appeared to be the most feasible for this operation under existing conditions.

A reconnaissance for uranium was conducted in the Black Mountain-Yale Point area of Black Mesa, Arizona, from February to November 1954. Numerous uranium deposits were examined, which appear to be situated in areas of greater tectonic deformation and confined to a single stratigraphic zone in the Toreva formation of the Upper Cretaceous Mesaverde group. Locally the uranium appears to occur in the vicinity of carbonized plant material in quartzose sand lenses, within paleostream channel deposits.
