A Novel Short-Step Synthesis of New Xanthenedione Derivatives from the Cyclization of 3-Cinnamoyl-2-styrylchromones

Novel (E)-3-aryl-4-benzylidene-8-hydroxy-3,4-dihydro-1 H-xanthene-1,9(2H)-diones are prepared by the cyclization of (E,E)-3-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-2-styrylchromones efficiently catalyzed with boron tribromide. The (E,E)-3-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-2-styrylchromones are obtained from the Baker���Venkataraman rearrangement of (E,E)-2-acetyl-1,3-phenylene bis(3-phenylacrylate), which is greatly improved under microwave irradiation.

Predators and Tourism Increase Intolerance? A. Treves and J. Bruskotter Perspective in Ecology "Tolerance for Predatory Wildlife" (2 May, 344: 476) suggest that intolerance for predators do not fit into the conventional view of perceived threats for livelihoods but instead by complex social factors. Although the above perspective focuses in jaguars, wolves, lions and bears, the same reasoning is perfectly applied to other economical contexts and different human-wildlife interactions. Nature tourism is a growing industry attracting a significant number of people to exotic places to see wildlife and, of course, many predators are on the main "menu". [...].

Cryptotermes brevis (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) in the Azores : Lessons After 2 yr of Monitoring in the Archipelago

The dispersal flights of West Indian drywood termite, Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) were surveyed in the major cities of Azores. The sampling device used to estimate termite density consisted of a yellow adhesive trap (size 45 by 24 cm), placed with an artificial or natural light source in a dark attic environment. In addition, data from two other projects were used to improve the knowledge about the geographical distribution of the species. The level of infestation in the two main Azorean towns differed, with high levels in the houses of Angra do Hero��smo, whereas in Ponta Delgada, there are fewer houses with high levels of infestation. The infestation in Ponta Delgada shows a pattern of spreading from the center outward to the city's periphery, whereas in Angra do Hero��smo, there was a pattern of spreading outward from several foci. The heavy infestation observed in Angra do Hero��smo and the clear increase of infestation levels observed from 2010 to 2011 is a reason for concern and calls for an urgent application of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) control strategy.

A survey about experiments on notions of time in children k-1 and k-2

In this paper we explore the importance of analyzing the exercises that the manuals have in Mathematics study, because the difficulty of identifying some errors on them can interfere with the capabilities of children. We work with some exercises related to the theme of temporal notions, based on a survey of textbooks from the 1st and 2nd grade (K-1 and K-2). Our concern is to alert about the importance of reflecting on the content of the books, in order to promote a teaching-learning process tailored to the needs of children. The activities present in the manuals should allow children to develop their logical- mathematical reasoning, for later be able to understand and apply Mathematics. To this end, we present some reflection about the exercises of manuals, and we give our opinion about what is the correct and incorrect. Also, some activities are suggested, among which were implemented with children of the 2nd grade, K- 2, along the experiments that support our work.
