Introduction The strong expansion of the world production of plastics caused a severe accumulation of plastic debris in the environment, which makes them one of the most important contaminants, growing as a global environmental problem. Although the production in Europe has been relatively constant in the last 10 years, world plastic production continues to increase, affecting soil biota and their functions. Objectives Thus, in order to evaluate the effects of MP in soil-dwelling organisms, earthworms (Eisenia andrei Bouché), were exposed to standard artificial soil mixed with MPs and the authors documented, using microscopic figures, the pathological lesions found in this biological model. Material and Methods Eight adult earthworms extracted from soils contaminated with different concentrations of MP (mg/kgdw) with sizes ranging between 250-1000 m, were fixed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin and processed for routine histopathological diagnosis. Results and discussion Contrary to what would be expected, MP were not found throughout the GI tube of earthworms but several lesions were found in the individuals extracted from the soils with high MP concentrations, when compared with control group, namely epithelial intestinal atrophy and evidences of inflammatory responses to this stress agent. Conclusion Earthworms have probably avoided the consumption of the biggest MPs. However, evidences point for lesions that were likely caused by the smallest MPs that were likely egested during the depuration phase.

O baço tem importantes funções hematopoiéticas e imunológicas, desempenhando um papel crucial na reposição da hipovolemia e de volume sanguíneo, em situações de hemorragia aguda. A administração de soluções fisiológicas tem grande importância na correção do volume circulante, evitando as complicações de hipovolemia. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar as alterações provocadas no baço, após grave hemorragia dos suínos e reperfusão, utilizando duas soluções fisiológicas distintas, um cristaloide - solução de ringer lactato e um coloide - solução de hidroxietilamido. As lesões histopatológicas encontradas no baço foram congestão, hiperplasia da polpa branca, a notoriedade dos elipsoides e o infiltrado inflamatório, razão pela qual, se procedeu à sua avaliação semi-quantitativa. Relativamente à hiperplasia da polpa branca, foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre o grupo Ringer Lactato e o grupo Hidroxietilamido, verificando-se o aumento da hiperplasia da polpa branca no grupo Ringer Lactato. Quanto à área dos elipsoides, apenas um suíno em cada grupo registava grau 1. Houve uma preponderância do grau 2 no grupo de controlo (n = 5) e no grupo Ringer Lactato (n = 11), enquanto que no grupo Hidroxietilamido se registaram valores idênticos para os graus 2 e 3 (n = 5). A congestão ocorreu em todos os grupos, com predomínio do grau 2 (n = 7) nos grupos Ringer Lactato e Hidroxietilmido. Relativamente ao infiltrado inflamatório, no grupo de controlo predominou o grau 1 (n = 5) e registou-se a prevalência do grau 2 no grupo Ringer Lactato (n = 8) e no grupo Hidroxietilamido (n = 9). A área dos elipsoides variou nos diferentes grupos, não tendo revelado diferenças significativas entre os grupos. Foi observada congestão nos três grupos do estudo, não tendo sido, contudo, registadas diferenças significativas entre os grupos. Quanto ao infiltrado inflamatório, verificou-se que no grupo de controlo predominou o grau 1, enquanto que nos grupos Ringer Lactato e Hidroxietilamido prevaleceu o grau 2, o que se justifica pelo facto dos grupos Ringer Lactato e Hidroxietilamido terem sido submetidos a uma hemorragia. Foi assim possível concluir que a reperfusão volémica com Hidroxietilamido 130/0.4 pode reduzir a hiperreatividade esplénica, quando comparado com o Ringer Lactato, após hemorragia aguda. Verificamos que os elipsoides não sofrem qualquer afetação em situações de alterações hemodinâmicos. Atualizamos um sistema de classificação para avaliação de congestão esplénica, usando o modelo suíno. Aferimos que as situações causadoras de alterações hemodinâmicas ou da perfusão tecidual provocam aumento do infiltrado inflamatório.

The positive benefits of DF associated with the regulation of the intestinal transit, and the prevention or treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and regulate colon cancer and obesity. The aim of this research was to collect information on knowledge about dietary fibre on citizens’ of Latvia. The questionnaire consists 22 questions, which aim was to evaluate knowledge on three distinct areas: six for knowledge about food fibres; six for the relation between fibres and variety of foods and 12 for the relations between fibres and diseases. The methodological study was conducted with 231 participants, from which 64.9% were female and 35.1% male, aged between 17 and 80 years. The respondents were selected by convenience, although of age, literacy, gender, geographical area of residence, including people from different cities and smaller villages. 67% of respondents consider that the consumption of sufficient amounts of fibres can prevent or treat different diseases. 85% of respondents have noted that legumes (peas, beans) are source of fibres, but more possible take up the fibre with a combination of vegetables and animal products. Dietary fiber was classified according to its solubility in an attempt to relate physiological effects to chemical types of fiber. Soluble fibers (B-glucans, gums, wheat dextrin, psyllium, pectin, inulin) were considered to have benefits on serum lipids, while insoluble fibers (cellulose, lignin, pectins, hemicelluloses) were linked with laxation benefits. More important characteristics of fiber in terms of physiological benefits are viscosity and fermentability. Viscous fibers (pectins, B-glucans, gums, psyllium) are those that have gel-forming properties in the intestinal tract, and fermentable fibers (wheat dextrin, pectins, B-glucans, gum, inulin) are those that can be metabolized by colonic bacteria. Objective: To summarize the beneficial effects of dietary fiber, as nutraceuticals, in order to maintain a healthy gastrointestinal system. Methods: Our study is a systematic review. Electronic databases, including PubMed, Medline, with supplement of relevant websites, were searched. We included randomized and non-randomized clinical trials, epidemiological studies (cohort and case-control). We excluded case series, case reports, in vitro and animal studies. Results: The WHO, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Heart Foundation and the Romanian Dietary Guidelines recommends that adults should aim to consume approximately 25–30 g fiber daily. Dietary fiber is found in the indigestible parts of cereals, fruits and vegetables. There are countries where people don’t eat enough food fibers, these people need to take some kind of fiber supplement. Evidence has been found that dietary fiber from whole foods or supplements may (1) reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by improving serum lipids and reducing serum total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentrations, (2) decreases the glycaemic index of foods, which leads to an improvement in glycemic response, positive impact on diabetes, (3) protect against development of obesity by increasing satiety hormone leptin concentrations, (4) reduced risk of developing colorectal cancer by normalizes bowel movements, improve the integrity of the epithelial layer of the intestines, increase the resistance against pathogenic colonization, have favorable effects on the gut microbiome, wich is the second genomes of the microorganisms, (5) have a positive impact on the endocrine system by gastrointestinal polypeptide hormonal regulation of digestion, (6) have prebiotic effect by short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) production; butyrate acid is the preferred energy source for colonic epithelial cells, promotes normal cell differentiation and proliferation, and also help regulate sodium and water absorption, and can enhance absorption of calcium and other minerals. Although all prebiotics are fiber, not all fiber is prebiotic. This generally refers to the ability of a fiber to increase the growth of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, which are beneficial to human health, and (7) play a role in improving immune function via production of SCFAs by increases T helper cells, macrophages, neutrophils, and increased cytotoxic activity of natural killer cells. Conclusion: Fiber consumption is associated with high nutritional value and antioxidant status of the diet, enhancing the effects on human health. Fibers with prebiotic properties can also be recommended as part of fiber intake. Due to the variability of fiber’s effects in the body, it is important to consume fiber from a variety of sources. Increasing fiber consumption for health promotion and disease prevention is a critical public health goal.
