The Koala and the Kangaroo effects: from Melbourne to Algarve

This communication is the result of several discussions between five researchers about consumers and consumer behavior. In fact, we only stated an analogy between consumers and two animals (koalas and kangaroos). We propose an original way to classify participants in a survey (or experiment) as one of these two animals. With this, we hope to rise up some minds about the need to become more realistic and less theoretical when we try to explain our decisions and behaviors.

"Going outside": discussing the connection between pedagogical practices with digital tools and outdoor learning in early childhood and primary education

Technology has an important role in children's lives and education. Based on several projects developed with ICT, both in Early Childhood Education (3-6 years old) and Primary Education (6-10 years old), since 1997, the authors argue that research and educational practices need to "go outside", addressing ways to connect technology with outdoor education. The experience with the projects and initiatives developed supported a conceptual framework, developed and discussed with several partners throughout the years and theoretically informed. Three main principles or axis have emerged: strengthening Children's Participation, promoting Critical Citizenship and establishing strong Connections to Pedagogy and Curriculum. In this paper, those axis will be presented and discussed in relation to the challenge posed by Outdoor Education to the way ICT in Early Childhood and Primary Education is understood, promoted and researched. The paper is exploratory, attempting to connect theoretical and conceptual contributions from Early Childhood Pedagogy with contributions from ICT in Education. The research-based knowledge available is still scarce, mostly based on studies developed with other purposes. The paper, therefore, focus the connections and interpellations between concepts established through the theoretical framework and draws on the almost 20 years of experience with large and small scale action-research projects of ICT in schools. The more recent one is already testing the conceptual framework by supporting children in non-formal contexts to explore vineyards and the cycle of wine production with several ICT tools. Approaching Outdoor Education as an arena where pedagogical and cultural dimensions influence decisions and practices, the paper tries to argue that the three axis are relevant in supporting a stronger connection between technology and the outdoor.

Desistência da sala de aula : fatores determinantes no município de Girau do Ponciano

Enquadramento: As características do ensino contribuíram para o desenvolvimento de sintomas que desencadeiam a desistência do professor da sala de aula, não sendo Girau do Ponciano exceção. Eles são um problema de gestão pública que requer esforços conjuntos para aliviar esta situação. As causas que aumentam esse fato tem as suas repercussões sobre a saúde dos professores e dizem também respeito às condições de trabalho. Objetivos: Determinar a existência de fatores que mostram a desistência e o afastamento da sala de aula dos professores das escolas municipais da cidade de Girau do Ponciano. Métodos: O perfil sociodemográfico revelou tratar-se de indivíduos maioritariamente do sexo feminino 88,8%, com cerca de 40 anos e possuindo o ensino superior 75,9%,sendo que 68,5% são os mais velhos em tempo de serviço. O instrumento de colheita de dados sob a forma de Questionários permitiu colher informações relativas à caracterização sociodemográfica, ao trabalho e à saúde dos professores. Resultados: Constatou-se que os participantes tinham problemas de saúde psicoemocionais (50,0%); Osteoarticulares (16,6%); relacionados à voz (7,4%); auditivos (1,8%); respiratórios (1,8%) e circulatórios (3,7%). A presença de problemas relacionados com a saúde foi identificada em (77,7%) como fator determinante para a desistência da sala de aula, sendo que (85,1%) revelaram que não possuíam motivação para o trabalho da docência. Não praticam atividade física (48,8%) e a maioria detinha experiência de sala de aula de 10 a 13 anos, totalizando (68,5%). Conclusão: As evidências encontradas sustentam a necessidade de investimento na prevenção de doenças e cuidados especiais com a saúde do docente que deve ser orientado numa abordagem global dos fatores de risco irrompidos na profissão, encarando a prevenção como uma tarefa de todos; governo, sociedades científicas, profissionais de saúde. A investigação e a análise dos dados empíricos é essencial, contribuindo para dar suporte às decisões da gestão e administração escolar e política da escola contemporânea. Measuring attachment to life in old age: the Portuguese version of the Positive Valuation of Life Scale (Positive VOL)

Purpose This study aims to present the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Positive Valuation of Life Scale (Lawton et al. in J Aging Ment Healt 13:3–31, 2001). Method Sample included 207 community-dwelling elders (129 women; MAge = 77.2 years, SD = 7.5). The data collection included the translated and adapted Portuguese version of Positive Valuation of Life Scale, Life Satisfac- tion Index Z, Meaning in Life Questionnaire and Geriatric Depression Scale. Results From exploratory factor analysis, two factors emerged, existential beliefs and perceived control, ex- plaining 49 % of the total variance. Both factors were positively related with meaning in life and life satisfaction and negatively related with depression (p\0.05). The values obtained for internal consistency for the total scale and for each subscale were good (a [ 0.75). Conclusion The Portuguese version of Positive VOL Scale represents a reliable and valid measure to capture the subjective experience of attachment to one’s life. The two-factor structure is an update to Lawton’s previous work and in line with findings obtained in the USA (Dennis et al. in What is valuation of life for frail community-dwelling older adults: factor structure and criterion validity of the VOL, Thomas Jefferson University, Center for Applied Research on Aging and Health Research, 2005) and Japan (Nakagawa et al. in Shinrigaku Kenkyu 84:37–46, 2013). Future research is required to investigate VOL predictors and the potential changes toward the end of the life span.
