Deafness like a communicative difference

Thinking from a theoretical perspective, this paper discusses the deafness as communicative difference, starting from the notion of culture articulated by Cultural Studies and Foucault’s conception of discourse as social practice. The study shows that the difference between deaf and non-deaf is in language, communication plan and the means of exchanging dialogue, marked by oral-auditive and visual-space communicative channels, contrasting majority deafness representations that appoint arguments based on nature, biological and linguistic terms. Such representations have the effect of the search for the erasure and correction the other, regarded as deviant and abnormal.

O presente artigo tem como objetivo de discutir, em uma perspectiva teórica, a surdez enquanto diferença comunicativa, a partir da noção de cultura articulada pelos Estudos Culturais e da concepção foucaultiana de discurso enquanto prática social. O estudo evidencia que a diferença entre surdos e não-surdos está na língua, no plano comunicativo e na forma de trocar diálogos, marcados pelos canais oral-auditivo e espaço-visual, contrastando representações sociais majoritárias que nomeiam o campo da surdez a partir de argumentos naturais, biológicos e linguísticos. Tais representações têm como efeito a busca pelo apagamento e correção do outro sujeito, considerado como desviante e anormal.
