GEO-SOCIOLINGUISTIC INVESTIGATIONS: CONSIDERATIONS FOR A DESCRIPTION OF VARIATION PHENOMENA

This paper presents some discussions on the theoretical and methodological principles of the studies on language variation. The reflections take the socio-historical context as an element that affects the performance of speech time and space. Language, more specifically its realization in speech, is taken as belonging to the social order, i.e., as an element that relates to the way of life of individuals, groups and societies, which, through social networks and their entanglements, depict the dynamic and complex set of social relations. Registered in its most alive realization, speech is the axis to which converge multiple connections and different levels of society. This dynamic relationship between language and society, according to the studies of Sociolinguistics and Dialectology, provides the elements for examining the phenomena manifested in speech. The theoretical and methodological approach delineated in this paper does not exhaust the principles that underpin the studies on variation, but it congregates some reflections on the conditions in which the language description can provide elements for a review of the behavior of speakers given the history and culture of the community.

Apresentamos neste trabalho algumas discussões sobre os princípios teóricos e metodológicos dos estudos da variação linguística. As reflexões tomam o contexto sócio-histórico como elemento que condiciona a realização da fala no tempo e no espaço. A língua, mais especificamente a sua realização na fala, é tomada como pertencendo à ordem do social, ou seja, como elemento que reporta ao modo de viver das pessoas, dos grupos e das sociedades, que, por meio de redes sociais e de seus entrelaçamentos retratam o dinâmico e complexo jogo das relações sociais. Registrada na sua realização mais viva, a fala é o eixo ao qual se unem e estabelecem diversas conexões, diferentes instâncias da sociedade. Essa dinâmica relação entre língua e sociedade, segundo os estudos sociolinguísticos e dialetológicos, fornece os elementos para a avaliação dos fenômenos que se manifestam na fala. O percurso teórico e metodológico traçado neste trabalho não esgota os princípios que sustentam os estudos variacionistas, mas reúne algumas reflexões sobre as condições pelas quais a descrição da língua pode fornecer elementos para uma avaliação sobre o comportamento dos falantes diante da história e da cultura da comunidade.
