THE LANGUAGE PATHS: A HISTORICAL REVIEW

This article aims to address the history of language from Antiquity to the structuralism of Saussure (2003) relating the concepts of language and sign language with the assumptions of Sociolinguistics, the science of language use in society. It is a succinct and objective approach of the various currents of thought about language throughout history, on the relationship between linguistic structure and social aspects and the close relationship between language, identity and society. This approach could also serve as a foundation more uniform for any student of language in their first steps on the road studies and research on this topic.

 Este artigo tem como objetivo abordar a história da linguagem desde a Antiguidade até o Estruturalismo de Saussure (2003), relacionando os conceitos de signo linguístico e língua/linguagem com os pressupostos da Sociolinguística, ciência que estuda a linguagem em seu uso na sociedade. Trata-se de uma abordagem objetiva e sucinta das diversas correntes do pensamento sobre a língua ao longo da história, sobre as relações entre estrutura linguística e aspectos sociais e a estreita relação entre linguagem, identidade e sociedade. A presente abordagem poderá servir também como um embasamento mais uniformizador para qualquer estudioso da língua/linguagem em seus primeiros passos na caminhada de estudos e pesquisas sobre esse tema.
