WOMEN'S RESISTANCE IN ANNE HÉBERT’S LES FOUS DE BASSAN

The aim of this paper is to analyze the relations of power and women’s resistance in Les fous Bassan (1982) by Quebecker writer Anne Hébert (1916-2000). To this end, we will resort to texts of Michel Foucault (1926-1984) where he discusses power and resistance. More precisely, we examine how the woman opposes herself to the situations that condemn her to obedience and silence, characteristics of a patriarchal society. We will emphasize the ways in which the hebertian woman expresses her discontent with the prevailing rules of patriarchy in Griffin Creek, a small fictional village in the province of Quebec where the narrative unfolds. We will show that in the novel in question, the woman does not accept, as some critics point out, submission and control applied to her body and spirit. She resists, from the place she occupies and without major clashes.

O objetivo deste trabalho é o de analisar as relações de poder e resistência feminina na obra Les fous de Bassan (1982), da escritora quebequense Anne Hébert (1916-2000). Para tanto, recorreremos a textos de Michel Foucault (1926-1984) em que ele discute sobre poder e resistência. Trata-se, mais precisamente, de examinar como a mulher se posiciona frente às situações que a condenam à obediência e ao silêncio, características de uma sociedade do tipo patriarcal. Destacaremos os meios utilizados pela mulher hebertiana para expressar o seu descontentamento face às regras do patriarcalismo vigente em Griffin Creek, pequeno vilarejo fictício da província do Quebec em que a narrativa se desenvolve. Esperamos mostrar que a mulher, no romance em pauta, não aceita, como alguns críticos assinalam, a submissão e o controle aplicados sobre o seu corpo e sobre o seu espírito.  Ela resiste, a partir do lugar que ela ocupa e sem grandes embates.
