Objective: to determine physical activity (PA) levels of children and adolescents (10-17 years old) during school recess periods from a public school in Bogotá. Methods: cross – sectional study in a public school from Puente Aranda in Bogotá. Children and adolescents PA levels and type of activities performed were observed using direct observation using the system for observing play and leisure activity in youth (SOPLAY) at school recess during 3 weeks, using three different observation conditions on each week. Additionally, contextual conditions of playground areas at recess were evaluated. Results: prevalence of students in sedentary activities was 52.4%, 77.3% and 64.9% during weeks 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Female were more sedentary (57%, 82% y 73%) compared with males (45%, 70% y 54%) for each observed week. Significant differences (p<0,05) in PA levels were found between female and male groups of students. Conclusion: children and adolescents showed a high prevalence of sedentary behaviors being the most frequent activities sitting, standing or lying down during school recess periods. Males had higher percentages of participation in moderate-vigorous PA compared to females. Contextual conditions of playground areas related to the access of equipment for PA and organized activities were not found. Programs and effective interventions are necessary to promote PA among children and adolescents at recess period during the school day. |
