Resumo

The thesis focuses on political and institutional aspects of financial crises. The first two chapters study the impact of political regime type and government popularity on the probability of experiencing financial crises. The third chapter evaluates the effectiveness of fiscal stimulus at times of economic recessions and crises. Overall, the thesis concludes that political and institutional factors are as important in explaining crises, as the economic variables.
